24 former Saints players getting another shot in the XFL spring league

7 of the 8 XFL teams have rostered former Saints. Some were only here long enough to pour a cup of coffee, but we’re rooting for all of them in their next opportunity:

The XFL is returning for its 2023 season, with opening day rapidly approaching. And there will be a lot of former New Orleans Saints players crowding the sidelines in Saturday’s kickoff game between the Las Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades — it’ll be broadcast nationally on ABC, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.

Seven of the spring league’s eight teams have at least one former Saints player on their roster. Some of these players were only in New Orleans for a few weeks, just long enough to learn the playbook and pour a cup of coffee. Others were draft picks, free agent signings, and fan-favorites.

But at some point they all walked onto the practice field on Airline Drive in a helmet with a fleur-de-lis on it, and we’re rooting for them as they chase their second shot at playing pro football. Here’s the full list:

Ravens sign former Saints scout team QB Brett Hundley

The Ravens signed free agent QB Brett Hundley after an injury to Lamar Jackson. Hundley recently saw work as Jackson’s proxy on the Saints scout team:

Here’s a new opportunity for a former New Orleans Saints quarterback. The  Baltimore Ravens re-signed free agent Brett Hundley after an injury to Lamar Jackson left them with just Tyler Huntley on their 53-man roster; Hundley will join the practice squad. He spent time with Baltimore over the summer, giving him some familiarity with their playbook.

Hundley recently saw work as Jackson’s proxy on the Saints scout team; while they may have had the right idea, New Orleans didn’t achieve the desired results. Jackson went 12-of-22 for 133 passing yards and a touchdown while gaining 82 rushing yards on 11 attempts, though the Saints defense did come away with 3 sacks. Speaking of Jackson, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Sunday that this isn’t a season-ending knee injury, and they’re optimistic he can return in a matter of days or weeks.

Baltimore has a narrow lead on the AFC North title race at 8-4, so this is a big opportunity for Tyler Huntley to lead them down the stretch. Four of the Raven’s five remaining games will be against division rivals, including a regular season finale with the Cincinnati Bengals on the road (who are also 8-4 right now). Huntley will be a restricted free agent in 2023, meaning Baltimore will have some options in retaining him, but this is a real audition for him with quarterback-needy teams like the Saints watching. If Jackson misses extensive time, it’ll be Huntley filling in for him and Hundley backing him up.

Saints cut scout team QB Brett Hundley amid practice squad shakeups

Saints waive backup guard Wyatt Davis, cut Brett Hundley amid practice squad shakeups

It’s shaping up for a busy week for the New Orleans Saints after their 3-6 skid to start the season, capped by a recent loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. Beyond everything happening in film study and in the trainer’s room, the Saints are busying themselves with tweaking their depth chart to make sure they’re working with the best roster possible for addressing their immediate needs.

That means a couple of players will be coming and going through the facility this week, with most of the shakeups happening to the practice squad. Several players were let go on Tuesday. Let’s break down each roster move:

Saints add QB Brett Hundley to the practice squad

Just a day after moving on from signal caller Jake Luton, the New Orleans Saints have added quarterback Brett Hundley to their practice squad, per ESPN’s Field Yates. The Saints have been carrying only two quarterbacks on their roster (when both are healthy) so far this season in Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton. But they have been keeping additional resources for the position on their practice squad, along with emergency quarterback Taysom Hill.

The Saints will be Hundley’s fifth NFL team as the 2016 fifth-round selection was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and has spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts and most recently the Baltimore Ravens. The Saints and Ravens will square off on Monday Night Football this week. Throughout his career, he has appeared in just 18 games. As a starter he went 3-6 in in those matchups. The Phoenix, Ari. native completed 199 of his 337 passes (59.1%) for 1,902 passing yards and a 9 to 13 touchdown pass to interception ratio.

He’s no stranger to the Saints, having attended the same high school as defensive end and team captain Cameron Jordan. 1 of his 9 starts was also against the Saints back in 2017 while Packers starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers was out with injury. He struggled in that game against a surging New Orleans defense going just 12/25 for 87 passing yards and an interception thrown. Hundley is unlikely to see the field for the Saints with three quarterback options ahead of him on the roster. But he does provide the requisite insurance strategy just in case. New Orleans still has another practice squad spot open, which may end up going to recently waived defensive back Bryce Thompson who was also a part of Tuesday’s transaction wire.

Ravens make two roster moves, officially trim roster to 85 players

The Ravens made two roster moves on Tuesday, officially trimming their roster to 85 players

The Baltimore Ravens have built up plenty of depth over the course of the 2022 offseason. They addressed many different positions, and put together a very solid roster from top to bottom. However, they had to say goodbye to a few players, as every NFL team had to trim their roster to 85 by Tuesday at 4pm EST.

Baltimore had already gotten their roster down to 87 players by the time Tuesday morning rolled around, moving on from running back Corey Clement, wide receiver Devon Williams as well as cornerbacks Denzel Williams and Robert Jackson. On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced that they released quarterback Brett Hundley while placing outside linebacker Trent Harris on injured reserve.

Hundley signed with the Ravens in May, and completed 2-of-2 passes for 42 yards in Baltimore’s Week 1 preseason game over the Tennessee Titans. Harris was signed by the Ravens less than a week ago, but lands on injured reserve after leaving practice on Monday.

Ravens sign QB Brett Hundley

The Ravens announced that they have signed quarterback Brett Hundley

The Baltimore Ravens have been able to see quarterback Lamar Jackson grow as a player on the football field and as a person off of it over the last four seasons. Entering year five, the former Louisville star has proven to be one of the best at his position in the NFL, but he’s not the only quarterback on the roster.

On Thursday, Baltimore announced that they signed Brett Hundley. The former UCLA signal caller will act as depth at quarterback, and could compete for a potential roster spot during training camp and the preseason.

Hundley was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2015 draft by the Green Bay Packers. He has completed 199 of 337 passes for 1,902 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions over the course of his career.

Colts protect 4 practice squad players in Week 17

The Colts protected 4 of their practice squad players in Week 17.

The Indianapolis Colts protected four practice squad players ahead of the Week 17 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, per the league’s transaction wire.

The four players include quarterback Brett Hundley, defensive tackle Chris Williams, cornerback Anthony Chesley and safety Will Redmond.

Given the new COVID-19 protocols, there is a chance the Colts see the return of several players who are currently on the reserve list. That includes quarterback Carson Wentz, who will be a close call when Sunday rolls around.

Making these protections at least gives the Colts a chance to call up some depth in the event a number of players can’t go against the Raiders as Indy tries to clinch a playoff berth.

What are the Colts’ QB options if Carson Wentz is out?

Here are the realistic QB options for the Colts, assuming Carson Wentz is out.

The Indianapolis Colts are likely going to be without starting quarterback Carson Wentz, who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday, for the Week 17 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Given that Wentz is unvaccinated, he will be out for 10 days under the current protocols, assuming he tested positive. If he’s a close contact to a positive test, it’s five days. The likely event is that it is a positive test, which we will find out by the end of Tuesday.

There is a chance that the protocols change to a five-day quarantine, in which case Wentz would be eligible to return for the game on Sunday if he tests negative and is asymptomatic.

If Wentz is out, the Colts are going to have to weigh their options. A large chunk of starters on both sides of the ball is currently on the COVID-19 list due to positive tests. Amid both injuries and positive COVID-19 tests, the Colts could be without their starting offensive line.

In a game that would clinch a playoff berth with a win, the Colts have to weigh all of their options, which includes reaching out to a familiar name.

Let’s dive into the realistic possibilities for the Colts at quarterback in Week 17 if Wentz is out:

Colts protect practice squad QB Brett Hundley in Week 12

The Colts protected practice squad QB Brett Hundley in Week 12.

The Indianapolis Colts protected practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley ahead of the Week 12 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per the league’s transaction wire.

As has been the case for the majority of the season, the Colts have been protecting Hundley as their third quarterback. After waiving 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason and promoting rookie Sam Ehlinger to the backup role, Hundley has been on the practice squad as insurance.

The Colts have gotten a healthy season from quarterback Carson Wentz, who has played under 100% of the snaps in just two games this season. Though Ehlinger is inexperienced, he has been the backup for roughly a month now.

Hundley is likely to remain on the practice squad for the rest of the season but if something were to happen to Wentz, it isn’t totally clear who would be the starter.

Because Hundley has already used his two gameday call-ups from the practice squad, he must be signed to the active roster if he’s going to see playing time.

Regardless, Hundley won’t be able to sign with another team after being protected for another week.

Colts protect two practice squad players in Week 11

Colts placed two players on the protected practice squad in Week 11.

The Indianapolis Colts protected safety Jahleel Addae and quarterback Brett Hundley on the practice squad ahead of the Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, per the league’s transaction wire.

With Khari Willis remaining on the injured reserve list with a calf injury and Julian Blackmon out for the season with a torn Achilles, the Colts have been elevating Addae to the active roster for game days. He’s done so twice already in Weeks 9 and 10.

If he’s to play on Sunday against the Bills, the Colts will have to make a roster move and sign him to the active roster.

Rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger has carved out a role as the backup behind starter Carson Wentz but the Colts still like Hundley as a “break glass” option so it should be no surprise he gets protected for another week.
