The New York Giants rested the majority of their starters on Sunday afternoon against the Cleveland Browns, giving way to reserves and back-end of the depth guys.

The result was a mixed bag — as it usually is — but there were more positives than negatives this week. Several players showed up in big ways and displayed impressively unique versatility.

Pro Football Focus didn’t necessarily see it that way, however.

PFF gave wide receiver Matt Cole, who got thrust into action at cornerback, a grade of just 54.9 on offense and 47.5 on defense despite not allowing a reception (two targets) and making one stop to force a field goal.

Cole did fare better on special teams, earning the team’s second-highest unit grade at 76.2. Unsurprisingly, linebacker Cam Brown topped that list (82.3).

Offensively, backup center Brett Heggie led the way with a grade of 82.8. He was followed by running back Devontae Booker (77.1) and fullback Eli Penny (75.6).

Other noteworthy offensive grades include offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison (70.7), wide receiver David Sills (68.6) and tight end Kaden Smith (67.2).

On the defensive side of the ball, safety Quincy Wilson led the way with a grade of 81.7. Just behind him were linebacker Oshane Ximines (80.2) and safety Julian Love (73.1).

Rookie cornerback Rodarius Williams also took a step in the right direction with a 64.4.

The lowest-graded players on the Giants were defensive lineman Willie Henry (27.1), linebacker Trent Harris (35.3) and linebacker Cam Brown (37.3). Wide receiver Alex Bachman earned the team’s lowest offensive grade at 43.8.

The New York Giants officially announced the signing of three 2021 NFL draft picks on Thursday evening, including that of second-round pick Azeez Ojulari.

In addition to Ojulari, the Giants also signed running back Gary Brightwell and cornerback Rodarius Williams, both of whom were sixth-round picks.

The Giants also announced the signings of three undrafted rookie free agents — Florida offensive lineman Brett Heggie, Baylor offensive lineman Jake Burton and Georgia Southern defensive end Raymond Johnson III.

Three of New York’s six draft picks remain unsigned. They are first-round wide receiver Kadrious Toney, third-round cornerback Aaron Robinson and fourth-round edge rusher Elerson Smith.

The team’s three-day rookie minicamp will begin on Friday and run through Sunday, and full attendance is expected (22 total players).

Here’s where every former Gator lands in CBS Sports’ updated seven-round mock draft

Nine former Florida players are projected to be selected in this CBS Sports seven-round mock draft. Here’s where they each end up.

The 2020 season may have been the worst of the Dan Mullen era on paper, as the Gators went 8-4 in the shortened season. But that’s a bit deceiving; the team played an entirely SEC schedule, and Florida won the SEC East for the first time since 2016.

It was six points away from a potential College Football Playoff berth in the SEC Championship against Alabama, and the team that came closest to knocking off the national champion Crimson Tide is projected to put a good number of players into the NFL at the draft later this month.

At the top of the draft, tight end Kyle Pitts and receiver Kadarius Toney are projected as first-round picks and expected to end UF’s 10-year drought of offensive skill position players taken in the first round. But beyond that, projections are much more fluid.

This mock draft from CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards is favorable toward a number of Florida players considered fringe draft prospects. Here’s where each of them end up in this projection.

Brett Heggie heads to NFL after accomplished Florida career

Florida football loses its starting center in 2021 as Brett Heggie moves on to the NFL after 31 starts in four years.

Name: Brett Heggie

Number: 61

Position: Offensive Line

Class: Redshirt Senior

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 321 pounds

Hometown: Mount Dora, Fla.

High School: Mount Dora

Twitter: @HeggieBrett74

Overview:

One of the few remaining holdovers from the previous regime, Heggie joined the Gators in former coach Jim McElwain’s second recruiting class in 2016. A three-star prospect from central Florida, Heggie was the sixth-best center in the class per the 247Sports Composite. Already at nearly 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds coming out of high school, Heggie had good size right away. Still, he sat out his first season in 2016, taking a redshirt.

As a redshirt freshman, though, he was one of the Gators’ best offensive linemen. He appeared in eight games (starting seven of them) and earned an SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week award before an injury against Missouri cut his 2017 season short.

He returned in 2018, but his season was again limited by injuries. Still, he appeared in nine games, earning another SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week award. He saw action at both guard spots as a redshirt sophomore, and he was a part of an offensive line that allowed just 18 sacks all season, the third-least in the SEC.

Heggie played in 12 of UF’s 13 games the following year, starting all of them. He once again saw starts at both left and right guard, and the Gators’ passing offense took a major leap forward, becoming the 16th-best in the country.

During his final season in 2020, Heggie moved to center, where he started for all 12 games. He was one of the team’s most dependable offensive linemen, which allowed quarterback Kyle Trask to have a record-setting season through the air. Florida led the nation in passing yards per game and were eighth in yards per play, and in the process, Heggie took home the third SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week award of his career in the season opener against Ole Miss.

With his eligibility expired, Heggie will move on to the NFL while the Gators are left to try to fill a major void along the interior of their offensive line.

Florida Gators center Brett Heggie named to Rimington Trophy Watch List

Florida’s redshirt senior isn’t just the top o-lineman on the team but among the best centers in the nation, as evidenced by his inclusion.

[jwplayer 9tjU7C84]

The Florida Gators football team has been humming along on offense so far this season, and despite a letdown in College Station last weekend in addition to a COVID-19 outbreak this week, there is still some good news for the Gator Nation.

Every snap starts in the hands of redshirt senior Brett Heggie, who was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List on Friday for his exemplary play at the center position through the first three weeks of Southeastern Conference play.

Heggie was one of our players to watch for the Gators’ SEC Week 3 game against the Texas A&M Aggies after earning the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week award for this performance in Week 1 against the Ole Miss Rebels. If he continues his superlative performance through the rest of the schedule, he could earn himself a place among the Gators greats at his position — perhaps the best since Maurkice Pouncey a decade ago.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the player considered to be the best center in college football. The Rimington Trophy is presented to the premiere centers in each of the following divisions: FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
