Redskins send Trey Quinn, Jimmy Moreland, Brandon Scherff to injured reserve

The Redskins have more injured players that will miss the rest of the season, as three starters have all been sent to the IR for the year.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Washington Redskins have placed three more players on the injured reserve this week, with just two more games on the 2019 schedule.

Cornerback Jimmy Moreland, WR Trey Quinn, and RG Brandon Scherff will all see their seasons come to an end with the roster move. In addition to moving those players to the IR, the Redskins also signed DB Kayvon Webster, and DB Coty Sensabaugh.

Moreland is a rookie CB who was having a solid season before suffering an injury in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles and leaving the contest early. Quinn missed the game entirely due to a concussion that he suffered the week prior, but his absence won’t be as rough on the roster due to the young core of talented receivers in Washington that have stepped up over the past month.

As for Scherff, he was held out of Sunday’s game as well, but his move to the IR poses some interesting questions, as he is set to hit free agency soon and has been working on a new deal with the Redskins. Expect rookie G Wes Martin to start again in Scherff’s place after performing well in relief on Sunday.

6 free agents Colts should consider signing this offseason

Colts should be active in free agency this offseason.

There may still be two games left to play for the Indianapolis Colts (6-8) before the season ends, but they were officially eliminated from playoff contention following the embarrassing 34-7 loss against the New Orleans Saints (11-3) on Monday night.

Now that the Colts are officially out of the playoffs, much of the focus will shift to the development of the younger players on the roster and the options available for the front office during the offseason.

While it remains to be seen if any of these players will be re-signed by their respective teams, we will be taking a look at six free agents the Colts should consider signing if they hit the market:

WR Amari Cooper
2019 stats: 14 games, 71 receptions, 1,073 yards, eight touchdowns, 15.1 yards per catch

The Colts desperately need to splurge at the wide receiver position. Given the injuries amounting in the room and T.Y. Hilton getting up there in age, it is time for general manager Chris Ballard to add some elite talent to the room. That’s where Cooper comes in.

Though it is no guarantee the 26-year-old will hit the market, Ballard should be all over him if he does. Cooper’s talent would be a perfect fit for the scheme because his talent transcends scheme. He could plug right into the X-receiver role while Hilton works as the Z.

The Colts need to find a future WR1 for their offense and if Cooper hits the market, they shouldn’t afraid to splurge.

Brandon Scherff is in New York meeting specialists about his injuries

The Redskins guard is in the final year of his contract.

The Washington Redskins missed starting guard Brandon Scherff on the field during Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Monday, Scherff was in New York meeting with a specialist over his shoulder and elbow injuries, according to ESPN’s John Keim.

This development comes at a critical time for both parties. Scherff, 27, is a free agent after the season and the Redskins haven’t been able to get him to sign an extension.

Scherff is one of the NFL’s better guards and somebody the Redskins would likely want to retain. But the fact he hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2016 is a flag that will surely continue to come up in negotiations.

From here, each Scherff update with have a big impact on the Redskins’ long-term outlook.

Ranking the top 25 potential free agents for 2020

Dak Prescott, Jadeveon Clowney, Cam Newton and Jameis Winston highlight the list of impending NFL free agents for the upcoming offseason.

First glance at the top 2020 free agents

Dak Prescott and Jadeveon Clowney highlight the list of potential free agents for 2020.

At the moment, the 2020 free-agent class looks stellar. It’s loaded with current, former and potential franchise quarterbacks and one big-time wide receiver

It also has some strong pass rushers. There are a few solid offensive linemen and a smattering of talented players at other positions. There could even be some big additions that could be added to the list if their current teams decide to let them go.

Hypothetically, this could rank as the best free-agent class ever. But let’s keep in mind that much can change between now and the official opening of free agency in March.

When it comes to the very top players on the list, their current teams are going to fight like heck to keep them with new contracts. That’s especially true with the quarterbacks.

Think about this for a second – who’s the last true franchise quarterback to switch teams in free agency? I say Drew Brees, who went from the Chargers to the Saints in 2006. Even then, the circumstances were unique. Brees had a severe shoulder injury and there was uncertainty if he would be able to play again. Plus the Chargers had Philip Rivers waiting in the wings. The Saints took a gamble on Brees and it paid off hugely.

But, again, that kind of thing is rare. The list of free agents will look much different in March than it does now.

Still, it’s fun to look at who is scheduled to be available in free agency. Here’s a list of the top 25 players, who, at the moment, are supposed to be available in March and it includes a couple of guys who are likely to be added to the list (Cam Newton, for example) who are likely to be released by their current teams and join the free-agent pool.

Interior linemen seldom get big money in free agency. But Scherff could be the exception. He’s a dominant run blocker and those are hard to come by.

Dolphins must address offensive guard position in 2020 free agency

The Miami Dolphins will have plenty of cash to spend in free agency. They’d be wise to target one of these two big fish free agents at OG.

The Miami Dolphins are going to be facing a significant roster overhaul this spring. And while the Dolphins have over a dozen selections in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft at their disposal, it would be irresponsible for the team to assume that many picks is going to yield 8+ starters for the Dolphins. Instead, Miami must exhaust all options to build out their roster — including free agency, which has been a sore spot for Miami in recent years.

Miami has spent aggressively and irresponsibly in past seasons, mistakes they’ll look to avoid. But the Dolphins should still be receptive to spending big money, provided they do it smart.

What does smart spending look like? The Dolphins have a lot of cap space at their disposal, they’d be wise to frontload their contracts and avoid the salary cap hell Mike Tannenbaum put them in by constantly signing free agents with deferred guaranteed cash and then restructuring the deals to kick the can further down the road.

Smart spending would also see an adjustment in the types of players Miami has attacked. The Dolphins are going to need at least three new starters on the offensive line next season and asking 3 rookies to step onto the line together is a risky proposition. Instead, Miami would be very wise to attack the offensive guard position in free agency, where an established veteran can serve as glue between a new center and a new tackle. There are two high end guards available in free agency this season — Washington’s Brandon Scherff and New Orleans’ Andrus Peat.

Scherff is 28 years old, Peat is 26. Both are former 1st-round draft selections who will be owed huge paydays if they hit the open market. The Dolphins can afford to pay big money for one or the other as a way to ensure their upgrades to the line aren’t just based on projection via the draft, but also by adding a final product. Peat brings a greater likelihood of hitting the open market and is currently recovering from a broken arm suffered in early November. Given New Orleans’ cap situation, the Saints may not be able to bring back Peat on a fair market price.

If that’s the case, Miami should strike firm and fast, with the guaranteed money and high cap commitments rolled into the first two years of a deal, while the team as excessive cap space at their disposal.

What is the Redskins’ biggest need in the 2020 NFL Draft?

With an eye already towards the 2020 NFL Draft, the Redskins need to look at filling several holes in the offensive line.

With an eye towards the 2020 NFL Draft already, the Washington Redskins should start looking at their roster and determining what some of their biggest needs are going forward.

With a projected pick that’s high on the board, it’s unlikely that the team will draft for need early in the first round when it makes more sense to take the best player available. That will likely be Chase Young, a dynamic and generational pass-rusher out of Ohio State. However, in the rounds after that, the Redskins need to do the best they can to fill out their roster and find guys that fit their needs.

According to Pro Football Focus, that means they need to draft offensive lineman above anything else.

With no more Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff hitting free agency, the Redskins offensive line went from strength to liability in the blink of an eye. Left tackle, left guard and right guard all need addressing.

You could argue whether or not the Redskins really have a hole to fill at left guard, as Ereck Flowers has been surprisingly good this season, but there are still several places in the front five that need improving. After a top-talent is taken in the first round, look for Washington to focus mainly on the big boys upfront.

The open-market price has been set for RG Brandon Scherff, thanks to the Eagles

Scherff will be looking for a new contract from the Redskins this offseason after his expires, and it will likely be an expensive one.

[jwplayer rzKgNnfu-ThvAeFxT]

Earlier this season, Washington Redskins offensive lineman Brandon Scherff expressed his desire to be a member of the Redskins for the rest of his career, which is convenient, as his contract is set to expire this coming offseason.

As one of the premier right guards in the NFL, it has been expected that Bruce Allen and Co. would do what they could to retain Scherff, who the Redskins drafted with the No. 5 overall pick in 2015. However, it was unknown how much Scherff would be looking to get in a new contract.

Thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles, the market has now been set for a premier right guard in the NFL.

On Tuesday, the Eagles signed Brandon Brooks to a four-year, $56 million extension to keep him in Philadelphia. You can be assured that Scherff made sure to take note of that number. If he is able to test the open market in a few months, he will undoubtedly be looking for an extension that rivals that $14M annually, and chances are that he could ask for a bit more, as he is a couple of years younger than Brooks and Dallas’ Zach Martin, the other top paid guard in the NFL.

Everything was sunshine and roses earlier this year when Scherff showed his HTTR pride and expressed his love for the team, and nothing has changed on that front. What’s different now is that Washington has become aware of what it will take to keep that relationship strong, and it’s going to cost a pretty penny.
