Catcher Easton Carmichael named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week

Sophomore catcher Easton Carmichael named Big 12 Co-Player of the Week after an incredible four game performance.

It was an electric week for sophomore catcher Easton Carmichael. His production at the plate earned Carmichael Big 12 Co-Player of the Week honors.

Oklahoma went undefeated last week, and Carmichael was pivotal in the Sooners efforts. He hit .615 with four extra-base hits, including two home runs and eight RBIs.

The sophomore went 8-for-13, scoring eight runs, drawing three walks, and even stealing a base for good measure. He also struck out only one time during that impressive run.

On Sunday, he went yard to put the run rule into effect and end the Sooners’ sweep of new Big 12 foe UCF early in the seventh inning.

He’ll split this award with Texas designated hitter Max Belyeu.

Carmichael is the first Oklahoma Sooner to win a Player of the Week award since his brother, Braden, did it last season as Pitcher of the Week.

Carmichael has recorded a multi-hit game for the Sooners in four of the last six games. He’s now batting .472, good for second in the Big 12, while slugging .755, good for fifth. Carmichael is fifth in OPS, fourth in doubles, and tenth in runs batted in.

Carmichael will look to continue his hot campaign this week as Oklahoma plays Oklahoma State and Texas-Arlington and has a weekend series in Fort Worth against a ranked TCU squad.

Oklahoma Baseball rides 7-run 6th inning to 9-5 win over Wichita State

The Sooners exploded for a seven-run 6th inning for a 9-5 victory against Wichita State before returning to Big 12 play.

The Oklahoma Sooners overcame an early deficit against the Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday night to improve to 22-13. The Sooners’ bats really came alive in the bottom of the sixth, with seven runs on four hits to come away with the 9-5 win.

The Sooners were living dangerously on the basepaths, stealing five bases in the bottom of the sixth.

Braden Carmichael had a rough start, allowing two runs through two innings. Carmichael had thrown only 36 pitches before being pulled. The Sooners would end up using nine pitchers against the Shockers in Tuesday night’s win.

The offense for the Sooners has been there all season, but with conference series on the horizon, the pitching staff needs to be better.

No home runs for the Sooners in this affair, but the lineup made up for it by capitalizing on Wichita State’s errors.

The Shockers had four errors in the game. The Sooners would make them pay for it all night with baserunners moving forward and tacking on one unearned run on the night. They would also add a run off a wild pitch in the big sixth inning.

Diego Muniz led the way with three RBIs and Tanner Tredaway had two hits from the top of the order.

This was OU’s final tune-up before returning to Big 12 play with a series in Lawrence against the Kansas Jayhawks. Oklahoma is currently sixth in the Big 12 and Kansas is dead last. A good series here could get OU back in business in the Big 12 conference.

The Sooners’ series against the Jayhawks begins Friday night at 6 p.m.

Oklahoma Baseball slugs past no. Texas Tech 14-9 in Amarillo

The Sooners are back in the win column after a 14-9 victory against the no. 4 Red Raiders in Amarillo.

The Oklahoma Sooners lived by the longball on Tuesday night, going yard five times in a 14-9 victory against the no. 4 Texas Tech Red Raiders at the home of MiLB’s Amarillo Sod Poodles.

This is a huge win for a Sooners team that had dropped its back-to-back series against Texas and Oklahoma State. While tonight’s game was considered non-conference, beating the no. 4 team in the nation has to be good for the team going into four games against smaller schools.

The Sooners peppered the Red Raiders with 18 hits in the contest with Peyton Graham, Blake Robertson, Jimmy Crooks and Brett Squires hitting home runs. Squires had two homers on the evening.

Yes, you read that right. Peyton Graham hit another one.

Braden Carmichael picked up his third win of the season in Tuesday night’s victory, pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs in the process. Carmichael struck out three and walked three before being pulled for Colton Sundloff.

The Freshman had a tough night, giving up four runs through 1.1 innings of work. Sundloff also had an issue with limiting baserunners as he walked three batters while only striking out one.

After stranding seven baserunners through the first three innings, OU finally got on the board in the fourth when Brett Squires hit his first homer of the night. The Sooners had 11 of their total hits and runs in the game in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

After beating Texas Tech in Amarillo, OU will be home by morning to play the Pacific Tigers on Thursday. OU won’t have another conference opponent until they play Kansas on April 22.
