See it: Ex-Giant Brad Wing tosses 40-yard touchdown to lineman in UFL game

Former New York Giants punter Brad Wing uncorked a wild 40-yard touchdown pass to an offensive lineman in his UFL debut on Sunday.

The United Football League (UFL) kicked off its inaugural season over the weekend and several former members of the New York Giants took the field.

Among them was punter Brad Wing, who now plays for the San Antonio Brahmas.

Late in the second quarter of a game against the DC Defenders, Brahmas head coach Wade Phillips dipped into his bag of tricks and called for Wing to pass. What transpired was one of the wildest plays of the game and arguably, of the first week of UFL football.

Wing took the snap and went through multiple reads before firing a pass down the field to offensive lineman Alex Mollette, who shook off a tackle and plunged in for a 40-yard score.

“There’s supposed to be one, one route, and that was not the one,” Wing said after the game, via NBC Sports.

It was only the second pass attempt for Wing in his professional career. The first came in 2014 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers and it was intercepted.

The 33-year-old Wing was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. After a year with the Steelers, he was traded to the Giants for a seventh-round pick and spent the next three seasons in East Rutherford.

After being released by the Giants in March of 2018, Wing, a good friend of Odell Beckham Jr., made stops in the AAF and XFL before briefly returning to the NFL (Steelers) in 2023.

Punter Brad Wing throws TD pass to lineman Alex Mollette for THICC-Six in UFL

A wild trick play turns into a UFL TD for the San Antonio Brahmas

The UFL had a 64-yard field goal on Saturday. On Sunday, the San Antonio Brahmas used trickeration for a wild touchdown.

Punter Brad Wing threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to offensive lineman Alex Mollette as the first half of the San Antonio Brahmas-DC Defenders game was concluding.

Wing had thrown one pass in the NFL and it was intercepted. He said during the broadcast Mollette was not primary option on the play.

The Brahmas led 20-9 at the break.

2 former Steelers sign with San Antonio Brahmas of UFL

The San Antonio Brahmas have signed former Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr.

Two former members of the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed to play in the United Football League. Running back Anthony McFarland Jr. and punter Brad Wing have both signed with the San Antonio Brahmas franchise of the league, which is scheduled to begin play next month.

McFarland spent four seasons with the Steelers after playing his college ball at Maryland. Despite his game-breaking speed, McFarland never found a spot on the depth chart. The team finally released him during the 2023 season after firing offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

Wing was the Steelers’ primary punter in 2014. The Steelers also brought Wing back in 2023, when he appeared in two games and had 11 punts for an average of 45 yards. It was the first time Wing had played in the NFL since 2017.

Steelers sign Brad Wing to practice squad

The Steelers welcomed back P Brad Wing.

We’ve seen first-hand how poor punting can affect a game and the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be taking no chances with Pressley Harvin III.

The team announced this morning that they’ve signed veteran punter Brad Wing to their practice squad. It signals a lack of faith in Harvin and for good reason. He’s one of the worst punters in the league, averaging just 43.4 yards per attempt.

Wing was with Pittsburgh earlier this season when Harvin was dealing with a hamstring injury. Unfortunately, he wasn’t an adequate substitute. He had 11 punts in Weeks 4 and 5, averaging 45 yards per attempt. He has two touchbacks, three punts inside the 20-yard line and a long of 52 yards.

Wing played for Pittsburgh in 2014, punting 61 times for 2,668 yards. Per Steelers.com, he landed 20 attempts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

To make room for Wing, the Steelers released quarterback Trace McSorley on Tuesday.

Steelers sign their ex-punter in wake of Pressley Harvin injury

The Steelers were forced to make a roster move on Wednesday, signing their former punter Brad Wing after Pressley Harvin injury.

It appears the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the Houston Texans, possibly without the services of punter Pressley Harvin III. In his weekly press conference, Mike Tomlin noted that Harvin is dealing with a hamstring injury. The team announced on Wednesday that they’ve brought back a familiar face, signing Brad Wing to the practice squad.

Wing played for Pittsburgh in 2014, punting 61 times for 2,668 yards. Per Steelers.com, he landed 20 attempts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Should they need him, hopefully, punting is like riding a bike because he hasn’t performed professionally in five years when he was with the New York Giants.

The Steelers have punted the most in the NFL (19), so Harvin’s had his work cut out for him. He had a rough go of things in Week 1 but bounced back nicely the past couple of games and is averaging 47.2 yards per punt.

Hamstrings are tricky, and punters kinda need them. There’s no sense in sending a sub-100 percent Harvin out there with Brad waiting in the wings. It’s better to have him rest in preparation for the Baltimore Ravens, especially with the bye week around the corner.

Ex-Giants shined during 2023 XFL regular season

The 2023 XFL regular season has come to a close and several former members of the New York Giants shined bright.

The 2023 XFL season is now in the history books with the league moving forward with playoff football. But it’s never too early to look back and see which players dominated throughout the year.

More than 25 former members of the New York Giants suited up for the XFL’s third iteration and many of them were among those who shined.

Here’s a quick look at those Giants, how they fared, and where they stacked up against the XFL’s other competition (if the numbers are noteworthy enough).

XFL at the midway point: How are ex-Giants faring?

A look at how several former members of the New York Giants are faring in the XFL as the league hits the midway point of its season.

The XFL returned for its third iteration this year and is now being run by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The season is officially through five weeks — their midway point — and there has been some solid action and interesting moments, many of which have a distinct New York Giants flavor.

Nearly 25 former Giants are playing in the league (several others coaching) and they have made their presence felt. In fact, several of the current league leaders are ex-Giants.

Here’s a look at how some of those players are faring.

See which coaching and special teams legends made the cut in our all-time LSU football roster.

Special teams can be a bit of an afterthought at times, but that shouldn’t be the case. After all, special teams can be an equalizer for less talented teams and a thorn in the side of otherwise elite ones.

We’ve seen countless examples of special teams making — or breaking (see: kick-six) — teams’ title hopes over the years. When looking at LSU’s history, there’s no shortage of impact special teams contributors.

We’ll take a look at the best in this breakdown, as well as the top coaches who have come through the Tigers’ program over the years.

2017 Giants had one of worst special teams units of the decade

The 2017 New York Giants fielded one of the worst special teams units of the decade both statistically and analytically.

For years, fans of the New York Giants griped over their special teams units, which regularly appeared to be among the worst in football. And in 2017, that reached a head when the team fielded one of the worst units of the decade.

Under Tom Quinn, the 2017 Giants finished dead last in Pro Football Focus’ special teams rankings and were statistically among the worst in the NFL.

But the Giants weren’t just bad in 2017, they were dreadful. In fact, using Football Outsiders’ analytical formula, they were among the very worst of the decade.

5. 2017 Denver Broncos (-7.4%)
4. 2017 Los Angeles Chargers (-7.5%)
3. 2017 New York Giants (-7.5%)
2. 2010 San Diego Chargers (-10.2%)
1. 2013 Washington Redskins (-12.0%)

The Giants briefly parted way with Quinn following the 2017 season, but he returned shortly thereafter to serve as an assistant to Thomas McGaughey, who had been dealing with some health issues.

The Giants also parted ways with punter Brad Wing after that season, and he has yet to return to the NFL since. And while kicker Aldrick Rosas did hang on and had a Pro Bowl year in 2018, he fell back to earth last season and now faces a slew of issues after an alleged hit and run.

The good news is that the Giants have completely overhauled their special teams unit in a short amount of time and were among the league’s best a season ago. Now under first-year head coach Joe Judge, who cut his NFL teeth as a special teams coach, they are expected to be even better.

49ers worked out punter to simulate Chiefs’ Dustin Colquitt

The 49ers want to make sure they take advantage of punts in the Super Bowl, so they worked out a left-footed punter.

The 49ers aren’t taking any chances in the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a left-footed punter, Dustin Colquitt, which makes things a little awkward for the 49ers’ punt returners, who typically see the ball off a right-footed punter.

It doesn’t seem like a huge deal, but the different spin could make the ball more difficult to judge and catch. A muffed punt could be a game-changing swing, so the 49ers made sure their punt returners were ready by working out left-footed punter Brad Wing according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Richie James Jr., the 49ers’ primary return man, has done a nice job this year, but had a little trouble at times with his decision-making. It’s a huge win for the 49ers on Sunday if they force an explosive Kansas City offense to punt, so not turning it over on this kicks will be huge. Working out Wing is a good way to ensure James is ready for a new look from the punter.
