Ex-Giants shined during 2023 XFL regular season

The 2023 XFL regular season has come to a close and several former members of the New York Giants shined bright.

The 2023 XFL season is now in the history books with the league moving forward with playoff football. But it’s never too early to look back and see which players dominated throughout the year.

More than 25 former members of the New York Giants suited up for the XFL’s third iteration and many of them were among those who shined.

Here’s a quick look at those Giants, how they fared, and where they stacked up against the XFL’s other competition (if the numbers are noteworthy enough).

XFL at the midway point: How are ex-Giants faring?

A look at how several former members of the New York Giants are faring in the XFL as the league hits the midway point of its season.

The XFL returned for its third iteration this year and is now being run by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The season is officially through five weeks — their midway point — and there has been some solid action and interesting moments, many of which have a distinct New York Giants flavor.

Nearly 25 former Giants are playing in the league (several others coaching) and they have made their presence felt. In fact, several of the current league leaders are ex-Giants.

Here’s a look at how some of those players are faring.

Titans add Marcus Johnson to practice squad among 3 roster moves

The Titans made three roster moves on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans made a trio of roster moves ahead of their matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Wild-Card weekend.

After holding a visit with him on Tuesday, the Titans signed wide receiver Marcus Johnson to their practice squad. Johnson, who also had a tryout with Tennessee back in September, has spent the past three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and played in 11 games for them in 2020.

In a corresponding move, the Titans waived wide receiver Rashard Davis  and activated outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper from IR back to the practice squad.

The Titans now have five outside linebackers on their roster, including Skipper and Brooks Reed on the practice squad, and Wyatt Ray, Derick Roberson and Harold Landry on the active roster.

Johnson is one of three wide receivers the Titans have on the practice squad, along with Cody Hollister and Chester Rogers.

Tennessee and Baltimore will kickoff at 12:05 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Titans activate Kristian Fulton from IR among 3 roster moves

Fulton hasn’t played in a game since Week 7.

The Tennessee Titans will be getting some reinforcements to their secondary ahead of the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions, as the team announced it has activated Kristian Fulton from Injured Reserve.

The Titans’ 2020 second-round pick, Fulton hasn’t played in a game since Week 7. He’s totaled 15 tackles (13 solo, one for loss), one interception, one pass defensed and one sack in five games (two starts) this season.

Tennessee made two other roster moves on Tuesday, including activating defensive lineman Teair Tart from the suspended list back to the active roster and placing outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper on practice squad IR.

Tart was suspended for one game by the NFL for stepping on Cleveland Browns guard Wyatt Teller’s leg during the Titans’ Week 13 loss. Skipper suffered what appeared to be an elbow injury during the Week 14 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Titans and Lions will kickoff at noon CT on Sunday.

Titans’ Isaiah Wilson suspended by team for ‘violating club rules’

This is just the latest misstep for Wilson during his rookie campaign.

The Tennessee Titans have suspended offensive tackle and 2020 first-round pick, Isaiah Wilson, for Sunday’s contest versus the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Saturday evening.

Accordingly, the rookie out of the University of Georgia has been placed on the Reserve/Suspended list.

The franchise made a move based on Wilson’s violation of club rules, although it isn’t clear exactly what he did. Whatever the case may be, Wilson’s transgression will be added to a comedy of errors that outline his rookie season.

On July 28th, Wilson was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list for the first time. A couple of weeks later, Tennessee State University police issued Wilson a trespassing warning when he attended an off-campus party that was broken up.

The first few weeks of September weren’t pretty, either, as Wilson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list for a second time on September 6th, and then on the 11th was charged with a DUI after crashing his vehicle.

Wilson finally saw the field for the first time on November 29th, but he only played four snaps (one on special teams) towards the end of the Titans’ victory in Indianapolis.

Saturday evening, another strike, and Wilson has been suspended. Calling the beginning of his young career a roller-coaster ride would be putting it nicely. Wilson will have some work to do to gain the Titans organization’s confidence, and that of its fanbase moving forward.

The Titans also made a few roster moves Saturday and elevated offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse and linebacker Tuzar Skipper from the practice squad.

Titans OLBs coach talks potential Beasley replacements, Tuzar Skipper and Derick Roberson

Titans OLBs coach Shane Bowen raved about the work ethic of Tuzar Skipper.

With outside linebacker Vic Beasley now gone, the Tennessee Titans are going to need to decide who will pick up the snaps he leaves behind during the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears and beyond.

Two potential options for the Titans are outside linebackers Derick Roberson, who is currently on the 53-man roster, and Tuzar Skipper, who resides on the practice squad.

Titans fans know Roberson well. He was a 2019 UDFA signing by Tennessee and played in three regular-season games last season. Roberson flashed in his limited action with three sacks.

Roberson has only been able to play in one game this season thanks to injury, and an illness prevented him from seeing the field in Week 8. The hope is that he’ll be ready to go in Week 9.

Skipper is a new face in Nashville. He was added to the Titans’ practice squad back in September and has been protected this week. The Toledo product played in six games with the New York Giants last season.

Titans outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen was asked about both players on Thursday when speaking to the media. Here’s a look at what he had to say about them (quotes courtesy of John Glennon of Broadway Sports):

Titans waive Cody Hollister, make change to practice squad

The Titans made a few moves on Tuesday, and one of them could signal that another signing is coming.

The Tennessee Titans made a few moves on Tuesday, one of which included waiving wide receiver Cody Hollister, who made the team’s initial 53-man roster out of training camp.

Additionally, the Titans replaced outside linebacker Jamal Davis on the practice squad with fellow outside linebacker, Tuzar Skipper.

Skipper entered the league as an undrafted free agent signing of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, but was cut prior to the season. He then latched on with the New York Giants, where he played in six games last season.

The move to waive Hollister is an interesting one. The Titans now only have four wide receivers on their active roster, so it has to make you wonder if Tennessee is planning on adding another wideout at some point.

After winning their Week 1 contest over the Denver Broncos on Monday night, the Titans will take the field for their home-opener on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

REPORT: Steelers release LB Tuzar Skipper

The Pittsburgh Steelers released second-year linebacker Tuzar Skipper on Friday.

According to Brooke Pryor, Steelers beat writer for ESPN, the team released linebacker Tuzar Skipper on Friday.

Skipper is the first of what will be many players released as teams need to trim their rosters down from 80 to 53 by Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Steelers signed the Toledo product as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft.

Skipper was somewhat of a preseason hero for Pittsburgh after making 50 key plays, six tackles (two for loss) and five stops in four games. However, after initially making the Steelers 53-man roster, Skipper was waived before Week 1. He was claimed off waivers by the Giants and appeared in six games in which he recovered a fumble and contributed three tackles and a half sack.

In November, Pittsburgh re-signed him off New York’s practice squad and signed a two-year extension on Dec. 30. He did not see any regular-season action with the Steelers.

Steelers sign LB Tuzar Skipper off Giants’ practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed LB Tuzar Skipper off of the New York Giants’ practice squad.

Outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper, who began his NFL career in Pittsburgh after signing with the Steelers following the 2019 NFL Draft, is headed back to the Steel City.

Skipper announced on Tuesday that the Steelers had signed him to their 53-man roster off of the New York Giants’ practice squad, where he has resided since late October. Prior to that, he had spent some time on Big Blue’s 53-man roster after being claimed by the team off of waivers in September.

Skipper curiously deleted his announcement tweet, but the move was later confirmed by the Steelers themselves and he was back in action on social media.

In six games with the Giants this season, Skipper recorded three tackles, recovered a fumble and had a half a sack.

Despite the Giants’ problems at the linebacker position, Skipper never really factored in, so now he’s back in Pittsburgh where he has rapidly become a bit of a folk hero.

With an open spot on their practice squad, the Giants signed defensive back Derrick Baity.
