Ohio State kicker Blake Hauebeil to miss national championship game against Alabama because of COVID-19

According to an Instagram post, Ohio State kicker Blake Haubeil will not play in the national championship because of COVID-19 protocols.

We have yet to receive the official availability list from Ohio State, but some of the players that didn’t travel with the team and won’t be available are starting to leak out. We’ve already heard about running back Miyan Williams and offensive lineman Dawand Jones, and now, we’ve got a very important and key member that has announced he won’t be playing.

Kicker Blake Haubeil let everyone know through an Instagram post that he tested positive for COVID-19, is in isolation protocols, and did not travel with the team. In a game of this magnitude where special teams could come into play, that’s could turn out to be a pretty big deal.

With Haubeil’s absence, the kicking duties will fall to either Jake Seibert or Dominic DiMaccio. We wish Haubeil nothing but a speedy recovery and hopefully, it’ll be a bittersweet pill to swallow with OSU bringing home a national championship to make him feel a wee bit better.

With Ohio State kicker Blake Haubeil out, who boots it for the Buckeyes?

The Buckeyes will have to turn to either walk-on Dominic DiMaccio or freshman Jake Seibert for kicking duties.

It may not seem like that big of a deal, but any football coach in America will tell you that having a reliable kicker makes life a lot less stressful. Things are no different at Ohio State. Sure, the Buckeyes are scoring touchdowns in droves, but extra points and field goals can make a big difference should OSU find themselves in a close game.

Senior kicker Blake Haubeil is out at least this Saturday night after leaving last week’s game at Penn State with a groin injury. Haubeil had been pretty much automatic before the injury making 24 of 29 FGs over the course of two-plus years and a perfect 131 for 131 on extra points.

The Buckeyes now find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Walk on Dominic DiMaccio came on for the injured Haubeil and made 1 of 2 field-goal tries in Happy Valley. Not horrible, but can he be counted on in high-pressure situations?

Enter freshman, Jake Seibert. We told you Seibert lost his black stripe earlier this week and is now an official member of the football team. Seibert wasn’t originally part of the plan for this year, but it looks like he may be thrust into the spotlight.

Coming from Cincinnati La Salle High School, Seibert was ranked the No. 2 kicker in the nation. Groin injuries can be tricky and with the extent of Haubeil’s injury unknown, it looks like Seibert may get a crack at taking over the reins in the interim.

We shall see.

Blake Haubeil named to Lou Groza preseason 2020 watch list

Ohio State placekicker Blake Haubeil has been named to the Lou Groza 2020 preseason watch list as announced on Wednesday.

There have been a litany of college football preseason award watch lists come out over the last week or so, and many of them have a Scarlet and Gray hue to them. So too does the Lou Groza Award that goes to the best college placekicker annually.

According to an announcement Wednesday, Ohio State placekicker Blake Haubeil is among the names appearing on the Groza’s preseason watch list for 2020.

The Award has was first handed out in 1992 and is awarded by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. It is named after Lou Groza (of course) who was on the Ohio State freshman football team before enlisting in the U.S. Army as World War II raged on.  He played in just three games on the freshman team but became Hall of Famer in the NFL after playing 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

Mike Nugent is the only Ohio State player to win the award. He was a runaway winner after an unbelievable 2004 campaign.

Six Ohio State players listed in Mel Kiper’s top five by position for 2021 NFL Draft

Six Ohio State players appear in Mel Kiper’s way-too-early top five by position group for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Mel Kiper is at it again. Or should we say he never really stopped? He took over your television or streaming device almost daily leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, and now, he’s already prepping you for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Ohio State had the second-most players selected in the draft just a couple of weeks ago, and based on Kiper’s projections almost a year out from all of next year’s fun, it should be another good one — virtually or not.

That’s because according to Kiper, Ohio State has six players listed on his big board that are five of the best at their position groups. We’ve got the rundown of them all for you here.

Next … The quarterback position

Ohio State Football: Blake Haubeil named All-Big Ten Special Teams

Ohio State Football’s Blake Haubeil, who didn’t miss a PAT during the regular season, has been named to the All-Big Ten Special Teams.

Ohio State’s Blake Haubeil has been named to All-Big Ten Special Teams. The three-star kicker coming out of high school, Haubeil has cemented himself as one of the conference’s best.

Throughout the season, Haubeil went 79-for-79 on extra points, which, in modern-day football, isn’t something taken for granted. He’s also was 8-for-10 on field goals, including a 55-yarder against Northwestern.

He was the only Buckeye named to the All-Big Ten Special Teams although punter Drue Chrisman has been named All-Big Ten third team the last two seasons.

The fourth-best kicker in the Class of 2017, Haubeil has been one of many Buckeyes that have been nominated to All-Big Ten teams. He was named third-team special teams.

This is another high honor for another terrific Buckeye.
