Prized Notre Dame football recruit set to visit reigning champs

Are you worried about how this will play out?

Four-star cornerback Justyn Rhett had scholarship offers from some of the biggest and baddest programs in the land when he announced his commitment to Notre Dame in December.  Among those were Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, and USC just to name a few.

Another is a rather successful program of late and one that Rhett has decided is worth his time to take a visit to next month as the Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) star tweeted Tuesday that he’ll make a visit to Athens, Georgia and see the reigning national champions on April 16.  This is the date of the Bulldogs spring game.

News of Rhett taking a visit to see the team and coach that just won a national championship certainly isn’t what Notre Dame fans would like to hear but if you want to climb the ladder and make it into the truly elite level of recruiting then things like this are going to continue to come with the territory.

Meet Notre Dame’s star 2023 recruiting class

Four-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch has LSU among his top choices

Another Bishop Gorman product looking at LSU.

If there is one thing that the LSU Tigers have, it is a lot of young wide receivers. However, can you ever really have too many playmakers? Over the next four weeks, we will find out a lot about the talent on the outside with Kayshon Boutte down for the year.

Looking towards 2023, LSU recently was named among the top schools for yet another Bishop Gorman product. Zachariah Branch named LSU among his choices with the usual suspects in the SEC. Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, and Tennessee are all jockeying for position in his recruitment.

Branch is a smaller wide receiver but he can be elusive in space. In the current age of college football, those players typically thrive on offense.

Hamilton’s QB vomited during the final TD pass of the wild comeback over Bishop Gorman

You thought the Hamilton comeback over Bishop Gorman couldn’t get any crazier? On the final TD pass, the Huskies QB vomited on the ball while it was being snapped.

As if the Hamilton High School (Chandler, Ariz.) comeback victory over Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) couldn’t get any crazier, Huskies quarterback Nicco Marchiol led the comeback while sick. Sick enough that he threw up during game play.

Sick enough that he vomited as the football was being snapped to him on the final touchdown throw of the night, the one that would end up putting the Huskies in position to complete a two-point conversion and complete the 25-24 comeback victory in which they scored 18 points in less than 70 seconds.

And of course they went for the two-point conversion. After all, with your quarterback sick and all the momentum after recovering two onside kicks and scoring two touchdowns, you’re not going to allow overtime to take place.

There’s even video of the incident.

Arizona Republic reporter Scott Obert wrote that Marchiol didn’t celebrate on the field with teammates but instead went directly to the locker room. He was “playing beat up” against a national powerhouse, sacked six times, and fully padded up in Chandler, Ariz., where the temperature remains over 90 degrees well after the sun sets at this time of year.

A postgame photo shows Marchiol laying on the ground, exhausted, with his dad kneeling over him.

A truly gutsy performance. A sick pass for the nasty comeback. All the other jokes you want to make.

No matter how upset his stomach felt, it was nothing like the upset of a 17-point comeback in the final minute of a game.

Watch: High school team wins after trailing 24-7 with 1:05 to play

What’s the most insane comeback you’ve ever watched in any sport?

Notre Dame fans may be familiar with Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas as the traditional Nevada football powerhouse has produced former Irish players Ronnie Stanley, Alize Mack, and Nico Fertitta.

Bishop Gorman was featured on ESPN Friday night as they took on Hamilton of Arizona in a matchup between a pair of programs rated in the USA TODAY’s national high school top-25.  Bishop Gorman had things seemingly on cruise control as they led 24-7 with just 1:05 to play.

It took a late field goal, the fortune of recovering multiple onside kicks, and timely offense, but Hamilton pulled the miracle comeback as they came back to win in regulation, 25-24.  See the insane comeback below:

Clearly one of the craziest comebacks you’ll see in any sport, ever.

No. 24 Hamilton scores 15 points in final minute to beat No. 7 Bishop Gorman

Two onside kick recoveries. A two-point conversion. Eighteen points in 65 seconds. Hamilton announced it is back with an improbable comeback win over Bishop Gorman.

For years, Hamilton High School (Chandler, Ariz.) was the powerhouse of Arizona. To win a championship, one had to beat the Huskies. More often than not, Hamilton took the trophy.

But over the past half-dozen years, their stature fell. Only in the last few seasons have they started rising again to place themselves among the best schools in Arizona.

Over 65 seconds on Friday night, against one of the prolific powerhouses of the country in Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Hamilton proved they have reached that echelon.

The Huskies scored 15 points in the final minute to snatch victory out of the hands of the No. 7 Gaels, taking home the 25-24 win.

With 1:05 to play, Hamilton made a 46-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 24-10. They recovered an onside kick and, about 30 seconds later, scored a touchdown.

The Huskies lined up for another onside kick. Once again, they recovered.

Nineteen seconds of game time later, Hamilton scored another touchdown to cut the deficit to one.

The Huskies elected to go for a two-point conversion. They had recovered two onside kicks in less than a minute; who was to say they couldn’t convert this?

They did. West Virginia quarterback commit Nicco Marchiol rolled to his left with his eyes on the end zone, took it himself, and dove for the conversion. Here are the full highlights from that final minute of play:

In taking down No. 7 Bishop Gorman, Hamilton has its signature moment of the season. But the Huskies won’t be able to rest with their 3-0 record. On deck is Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.), another dynamic Arizona team.

Bishop Gorman, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season. The Gaels will now return to Nevada to play its first game in their home state this season. Arbor View (Las Vegas) is on deck, and the Gaels will have in-state opponents the rest of the year.

Bishop Gorman offensive tackle sets official visit to Oklahoma

2022 offensive tackle from Bishop Gorman (NV) sets official visit in June.

Another day, another player announcing a visit to Norman, Oklahoma. Top 20 offensive tackle and No. 7 ranked player in the state, Jake Taylor announced two visits with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Oklahoma Sooners being first up.

Taylor currently plays at a school that Oklahoma is familiar with, Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nevada. Taylor has the size and frame of a starting offensive tackle at the collegiate level. As a junior, Taylor played on the right side and plays with tenacity. He can get to the second level easily and will play through the whistle with physicality.

Notre Dame football hosted Bishop Gorman star for virtual visit

The Notre Dame coaching staff hosted Bishop Gorman offensive lineman Jake Taylor for a virtual visit last night.

[jwplayer rT852d1s-er0jUifI]

The Notre Dame staff offered Las Vegas’ star offensive tackle Jake Taylor back in early October of last year. With the NCAA mandated dead period still in effect the only way recruits are able to “visit” schools is virtually. That’s exactly what happened last night with Taylor.

Although it is nothing like actually stepping foot on campus, virtual South Bend and the football facilities are really the only options for Brian Kelly and his staff at the moment. The Irish followed up a virtual visit that Taylor took to Alabama, but it seems like Notre Dame made a very positive impression on the six-foot-six-inch and 280-pound lineman.

Taylor does seem to want to physically visit programs, he made a trip out to Oklahoma during the season. The star tackle has yet to visit South Bend, so expect him to make a trip when the NCAA lifts the dead period.

Texas Football Recruiting: Four-star safety Zion Branch lists top 11 schools

Texas is still in the running for four-star safety Zion Branch out of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Texas is still in the running for four-star safety Zion Branch. The Las Vegas, Nevada, native plays for Bishop Gorman High School — one of the premier football programs in the entire country.

Four Pac-12 programs are included among his top 11 schools, as well as traditional powerhouses such as Alabama, LSU, and Ohio State. It’s worth noting that Jeff Banks is listed as Branch’s main recruiter for the Crimson Tide. Banks is expected to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff in Austin.

Texas already has one defensive back in the 2022 class in four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. If the Longhorns end up being the destination for Branch, it would be another great defensive back added to their rich history.

Notre Dames offers Bishop Gorman ‘22 athlete Ross

The Irish offer high school powerhouse athlete prospect Fabian Ross from Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman.

The Notre Dame coaching staff has gone back to Las Vegas’ premier football high school, Bishop Gorman, and offered athlete Fabian Ross late last night.

The Irish have had some very good luck with Bishop Gorman prospects, as they have signed 4 total players from the private Catholic high school. Ronnie Stanley and Alize Mack are the biggest standouts, as Gorman typically has multiple Division I players on their team each year.

Ross is a great prospect, one that most likely start on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback. He shows great closing speed, is comfortable playing out on an island and has a great frame at 6-feet tall and 180-pounds. Ross has a very solid collection of offers at the moment, as the Irish joined Michigan, USC, Oregon, Penn State and others. He is rated at the 176th overall prospect and the 22nd corner in the country by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Brian Kelly and cornerback coach Mike Mickens would love to get another Gael on his roster and Ross would look great in the Blue and Gold. He is the 13th true cornerback that Notre Dame is recruiting in the 2022 class, but there are no commits at his position. Michigan’s Nolan Ziegler is a secondary commit, but he will play safety for the Irish. With three total commit in the ‘22 class, Notre Dame is off to a great start, as they have the 4th best class so far.
