With Cowboys in 2023, player retires due to ‘terrifying’ blood clot

Billy Price is retiring from the NFL after a scary medical emergency. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys are an organization that tends to support their own through thick and thin, so surely thoughts are with a player who spent just a single season with them. Billy Price, originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals out of Ohio State, announced his retirement this past weekend after a scary medical situation.

Price announced his retirement via Instagram, due to needing to be on blood thinners following blood clot surgery in late April.

In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away. On April 24th I had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of my lungs. As a healthy 29 year old, an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no further medical explanation is terrifying. I am truly thankful to be alive today. Unfortunately, I will be retiring from the NFL as the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners creates tremendous risk.

I am truly thankful for the opportunity to have played in some of the greatest atmospheres around the world. I am thankful to have trained and played alongside men who will continue to make Pro Bowls, All Pro Rosters and Hall of Fame recognitions.

To my wife: this career would not have been possible without your continued love and support. The sacrifices you have made over the course of my career do not go unnoticed. I cannot wait to navigate the next chapter in life with you as we continue to grow our family.

In 2023, Dallas had trouble with depth along the interior of the offensive line, and signed the former 2018 first-round pick to provide some veteran presence with the unit. Price spent the year with the practice squad after signing in late September following a hamstring injury to then starter Tyler Biadasz. He spent the rest of the year with the squad, but never appeared in a single game.

Following his first three seasons in Cincinnati, Price spent a year with the New York Giants and the 2022 season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Former Bengals 1st-round pick Billy Price retires

A former first-rounder says goodbye.

Former Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Billy Price has stepped away from the game at the age of 29.

On social media, Price revealed his retirement stems from risks caused by a blood clot.

“In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away,” Price wrote. “On April 24th I had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of my lungs. As a healthy 29 year old, an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no further medical explanation is terrifying. I am truly thankful to be alive today. Unfortunately, I will be retiring from the NFL as the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners creates tremendous risk.”

Price was the 21st pick by the Bengals in 2018 and played five seasons there, recording 19 starts. The Bengals traded him to the New York Giants in 2021, and he started 11 games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022.

Former Giants OL Billy Price announced his retirement from football on Saturday, revealing he had recently undergone life-saving surgery.

Former New York Giants offensive lineman Billy Price abruptly announced his retirement from football on Saturday, revealing he had recently undergone life-saving surgery.

Potential complications from the medical emergency are what led to his decision to step away.

“In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away,” Price wrote on Instagram. “On April 24th I had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of my lungs. As a healthy 29-year-old, an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no further medical explanation is terrifying. I am truly thankful to be alive today.

“Unfortunately, I will be retiring from the NFL as the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners creates tremendous risk.”

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Price was originally a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL draft. After three seasons in the Jungle, he bounced around the league, making stops with the Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Dallas Cowboys.

In 2021 with the Giants, Price appeared in 16 games with 15 starts at center.

Over the course of his six-year career, Price appeared in 69 games with 45 starts, most coming at center. He also took snaps at left guard in his second season with the Bengals.

Price was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2018 and last played for the Cardinals in 2022. He spent the 2023 season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

Once a Giant, Always a Giant.

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Billy Price announces retirement

Well wishes to Price! #GoBucks

Former Ohio State offensive lineman, Billy Price, announced his retirement this weekend after a six-year NFL career. The announcement was paired with news that he is recovering from a pulmonary embolism he experienced in April and that the risk is simply too great to continue on with the game that he loves.

The breaking news was posted on his Instagram account Saturday morning:

“In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away.

“I am truly thankful for the opportunity to have played in some of the greatest atmospheres around the world. I am thankful to have trained and played alongside men who will continue to make Pro Bowls, All Pro Rosters and Hall of Fame recognitions.

“To my wife: this career would not have been possible without your continued love and support. The sacrifices you have made over the course of my career do not go unnoticed. I cannot wait to navigate the next chapter in life with you as we continue to grow our family.”

In addition to being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL draft and spending three seasons there, Price also had stints with the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Dallas Cowboys.

Before that, he was a part of the 2014 Ohio State national championship team. We obviously wish the best for Price and whatever comes next for him, including good health.

Cowboys add former first-rounder to practice squad; team currently has 4 centers

From @ToddBrock24f7: The signing of award-winner Billy Price could speak to the severity of Tyler Biadasz’s injury; Brock Hoffman is out of gameday elevations.

The Cowboys are welcoming yet another former first-round draft pick to the locker room.

Dallas has signed center Billy Price to the practice squad. Price’s addition fills the spot left open when C.J. Goodwin was promoted to the active roster prior to Week 3’s game in Arizona.

Price, who turns 29 in October, was the 21st overall pick in the 2018 draft, selected out of Ohio State by the Bengals. After 42 game appearances in three seasons with Cincinnati, the 6-foot-4-inch former Rimington Award winner was traded to the Giants in 2021 and then bounced from Las Vegas to Arizona last season, and finally New Orleans this past summer.

His signing by Dallas comes after a 28-16 loss in which the offensive line saw major substitutions, including at center. Starter Tyler Biadasz was out with a hamstring injury; Brock Hoffman took his place in the lineup, but Sunday marked his third and final gameday elevation from the practice squad. He must be signed to the active roster in order to be active again this season.

Price joins Sean Harlow as the team’s practice squad centers. Harlow has two gameday elevations remaining in 2023.

The Cowboys listed just one center on Aug. 29’s initial 53-man roster. Less than one month later, the club suddenly has four of them.

This development could speak to the severity of Biadasz’s injury and/or the long-term expectations of Hoffman and/or Harlow. But it’s a situation that bears watching.

Saints release backup center Billy Price with non-football injury designation

The New Orleans Saints released backup center Billy Price before training camp, with a non-football injury designation:

This was a bit of a surprise: the New Orleans Saints announce Thursday that they released backup center Billy Price with a non-football injury designation, having signed him after a tryout during minicamp practices in June. They’ll need to look for a different option to compete for the job of backing up Erik McCoy, who has missed nine games with injuries over the last two years.

Price, the Cincinnati Bengals’ former first-round pick, was an experienced starter in the NFL, so it’s disappointing to see the Saints part ways with him. Whether Price suffered an injury while training in the offseason or in some other accident is unclear but he’ll be recovering away from the team while exploring his next opportunities. Good luck to him.

Undrafted rookie Alex Pihlstrom (Illinois) is the only other center on the roster behind McCoy, so look for the Saints to bring in another veteran to push him over the summer. New Orleans has shown interest in another former Ohio State Buckeye, Pat Elflein, though he’s looking for an opportunity to compete for a starting job. Price’s departure leaves the Saints with an open roster spot.

Saints sign multiple free agents after minicamp tryouts

The Saints added three offensive players Thursday in a wave of roster moves after tryouts at their minicamp practices this week: | @crissy_froyd

The New Orleans Saints announced a series of roster moves on Thursday evening, noting that the team had added three new offensive players after tryouts at minicamp. They’ll have opportunities to compete for roster spots during training camp and this summer’s preseason games, but each of these players is very much on the bubble going deeper into the offseason. Get to know the newest members of the black and gold:

Saints host former Bengals first-round pick Billy Price on free agent visit

The Saints hosted free agent Billy Price on a free agent visit. The ex-Bengals first-round pick was a three-time All-Big Ten center and team captain at Ohio State:

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

This is interesting: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that the New Orleans Saints met with former Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Billy Price, selected at No. 21 overall in the 2018 draft. He was traded top the New York Giants in 2021 and started 15 games for them, but he spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals last season.

A three-time All-Big Ten center and two-time team captain at Ohio State, Price was college teammates with Saints stars like Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore but he hasn’t experienced as much success at the pro level. Price has short arms for someone his height (with a wingspan of just 75.25 inches; for perspective, there wasn’t a single offensive lineman at this year’s Senior Bowl with a wingspan under 77 inches) and it’s led to him grasping at opponents as they pass him by, too often resulting in penalties.  He’s also simply dealt with the yips: Price has been fouled 31 times on 3,091 career snaps across 69 games and 16 of those penalties were false start infractions.

But the Saints like to keep a strong backup plan at center in light of recent injuries to Erik McCoy, who missed five games in 2021 and four in 2022; Cesar Ruiz has been his principle replacement, but that opens another hole at right guard. Guys like Will Clapp and Josh Andrews have filled in, too, and New Orleans has also stashed veterans such as Nick Martin and Austin Reiter on their practice squad, though they’ve left for other opportunities before their services were needed. Right now the only other player with much of a resume at center is undrafted rookie Alex Pihlstrom (Illinois). Maybe they see Price as someone similar with extensive pro experience who could be brought in later.

Cardinals announce signing of pair of CBs

They add cornerbacks Dylan Mabin and Bobby Price to the offseason roster.

The Arizona Cardinals began their final week of voluntary OTAs and added a pair of cornerbacks to the roster.

They announced Monday afternoon the signing of cornerbacks Dylan Mabin and Bobby Price.

Mabin is 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds and played collegiately at Fordham. He was an undrafted rookie in 2019 and signed originally with the Raiders. Since then, he has also spent time with the Vikings, Saints and Falcons.

His four career games came in 2020, three with the Vikings and one with the Raiders.

He has two career tackles.

Price is 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds. He spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions after he signed with them as an undrafted rookie in 2020 out of Norfolk State.

He has played 22 games, 15 of them in 2021, with 23 total tackles and three pass breakups. Eight of his tackles have been on special teams and he also had a 17-yard reception in 2021 on a fake punt.

The signings give Arizona 91 players on the roster, so there will be need to be a corresponding player cut on Tuesday.
