Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire ready to learn from new teammate Le’Veon Bell

Edwards-Helaire is going to milk Le’Veon Bell for every bit of knowledge that he has.

The Kansas City Chiefs added RB Le’Veon Bell to the mix last week. Many questioned the decision given the presence of rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. For Chiefs HC Andy Reid, the bottom line was that this was a move that made his football team better.

“Listen, we don’t turn away good players, and he’s a good one,” Reid told reporters following the game. “So, it’s exciting to have him around, and we’ll see how he does. He’s got to get in and get in the playbook and learn everything, but he’s a pretty smart kid and been doing it a long time. So, I don’t think he’ll have a problem with that. I think if you talk to Clyde, Clyde will sleep well tonight, as I think the other backs will. To add one more guy, I don’t think any of them will complain there.”

Bell was unable to participate in the Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills due to COVID-19 screening. Now with Week 6 in the rearview, on the eve of Bell’s debut in Kansas City, many are wondering what the dynamic will be in the Chiefs’ backfield. Reid is confident that Bell will fit in just fine. He’s also happy with the way Edwards-Helaire handled himself in light of the news.

“I thought he did a nice job, a real nice job, and I thought he handled the news well,” Reid said. “I think they actually talked before anything actually happened, so there was a little communication that I think took place, so I think that’s healthy. But anyways, he took it fine. I mean, obviously, he came out and played pretty good, so that was a good thing.”

As for the rookie running back, he is excited about the opportunity to learn from a veteran who has been playing at a high level in the NFL for a long time. Remember the original plan was for Edwards-Helaire to work alongside Damien Williams this season. Since Williams made the decision to opt-out, Edwards-Helaire has been learning from mostly unproven depth players.

The addition of Bell creates a chance for him to learn from and work alongside someone who has been a true bell-cow running back in the NFL. It’s an opportunity to borrow some elements from Bell’s game and add them to his own repertoire.

“Talking to Le’Veon (Bell), another guy coming in, another piece to the puzzle,” Edwards-Helaire said. “From here I just feel like we can only go up. Le’Veon’s a guy that is older than me, I’m still in my rookie year. So anything I can do to pick his brain and gain any knowledge from him, I’m there for it. It was a quick conversation, but he’ll be in the building next week so I’ll be able to talk to him more in person.”

Bell, without having met Edwards-Helaire face-to-face, already appears to be one of his biggest fans. Bell spent Monday night cheering for the team on social media and even tweeted out in support of his new running mate, Edwards-Helaire during a near-fumble.

At face value, this appears to be the beginning of a beautiful collaboration in the Kansas City backfield.

PODCAST: Despite second loss, Bills do have big chance for rebound

Buffalo Bills podcast following Week 6 loss vs. Chiefs, chance for rebound vs. New York Jets.

The Buffalo Bills lost their second-straight game on Monday, falling to the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, 26-17. While the game wasn’t as one sided as last week, the Bills didn’t look to be there regular early-season standard.

The first half was brighter, with much better play calling on the part of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. With a decent mix of run and pass plays, the Bills kept it relatively close with Kansas City. Devin Singletary ripped off some big runs, and the Bills were acting like a balanced team, operating unpredictably, but the second half was a big regression.

On both offense and defense, there were lapses and the Chiefs had full control. They never looked back. It certainly brings into question Daboll’s “offensive genius” and whetherd defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has a future in Buffalo. Daboll, who was being looked at and discussed as a head coach candidate against sub par teams, isn’t proving to be effective against the best of the NFL. Frazier looks to potentially be the deserved scapegoat if this Bills team underperforms.

Buffalo can get back on track against the inferior Jets next week, as they return to their normally scheduled game days. It’s been a rough few weeks, but a game against the Jets could be what the doctor ordered.

Chiefs snap counts, Week 6: Nick Allegretti, Daniel Kilgore unleashed

What can we learn from the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 6 snap counts?

The Kansas City Chiefs bounced back with an impressive win over the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 6. They got the job done mostly on the ground, with a total of 245 rushing yards outweighing the passing yards on the day. Can the snaps tell us anything about this marked improvement on the ground?

Here’s how the snaps shook out in Week 6:

*Snap counts via NFL Game Statistics and Information System

Observations

  • Mitchell Schwartz only played in eight snaps during the game before exiting with a back injury. Nick Allegretti played in 65 snaps on the day and had a great day moving folks in the ground game along with Daniel Kilgore who notched the start in place of Austin Reiter.
  • Reiter, who Andy Reid said is dealing with a tender knee, played five snaps on special teams. That suggests this change could have more to do with performance as opposed to injury.
  • Demarcus Robinson saw the most snaps of any wide receiver on the day with 69. That’s significant because in the past it had been Mecole Hardman who benefited from the snaps with Sammy Watkins out. Hardman barely out-snapped Byron Pringle, who had 28 snaps on the day.
  • Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a monster day on just 67% of the offensive snaps. It just goes to show you there are built-in snaps for Le’Veon Bell once he is ready to play.
  • Ricky Seals-Jones played in just two forgettable snaps during his Chiefs debut.
  • Five players in the secondary played in 100% of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps. They just so happen to be the starters in the secondary from the 2019 season. It just shows you how trusted and reliable Mathieu, Sorensen, Thornhill, Breeland and Ward are.
  • Alex Okafor played in just 15 defensive snaps before suffering a hamstring injury. Surprisingly Taco Charlton played just 13 snaps in relief of Frank Clark and Tanoh Kpassagnon.
  • Willie Gay Jr. played in just two defensive snaps on the day. I’ll be curious to find out if that was just a personnel package thing or if the Chiefs are moving away from playing the rookie as much.
  • Armani Watts, Dorian O’Daniel and Antonio Hamilton all tied for the most special teams snaps on the day with 20.

Chiefs injury updates following Week 6 vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a pair of injuries during their win over the Buffalo Bills.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a pair of players to injury during the course of the Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills.

First, Mitchell Schwartz was removed from the game with a back injury, one that had been reported for the first time on the final injury report on Saturday. Next, Alex Okafor suffered another hamstring injury after having suffered one in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.

While you never want to see players injured, the good news is that these two seem to be of the mild variety. Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided some updates following the game.

“So Alex Okafor strained his hamstring— the other hamstring,” Reid said. “I know it’s frustrating for him, but he’ll get that worked on.”

It’s not the same hamstring that Okafor pulled in Week 1 that kept him out until Week 4. Hopefully, this one causes him to miss little time. Okafor has played in just 13 of 25 possible games with the Chiefs since joining the team in 2019. His tenure in Kansas City has earned him the label of injury-prone unfortunately.

As for Schwartz, Reid said that his back was bothering him and they took him out because of it. He elaborated later in his press conference about the extent of the injury and whether Schwartz was close to sitting out tonight from the get-go.

“Yeah, he thought that maybe he could get through it and roll,” Reid said. “[His back] just started tightening up on him and so we made the switch there.”

It doesn’t sound like this should be a long-term type of injury for Schwartz, it just popped up late in the week and he tried to tough it out. It’s possible that with a few days of rest during practice this week, Schwartz could be ready to start in the Week 7 road game against the Denver Broncos.

Sean McDermott makes it clear: Time for ‘moral victories’ is over

McDermott promises the Bills will take their loss to the Chiefs hard.

Another week, another tough loss to a top-tier team on primetime for the Buffalo Bills.

Following last week’s loss to the Titans, the Bills dropped their second game of the season to the Kansas City Chiefs, 26-17. Granted, both were against good teams, one of which being the defending champs. But despite the talent across from his team over the course of their last two outings, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott said after the game that a loss is a loss, period.

“The minute losing gets easy, it’s not a good deal,” McDermott said. “We take it hard. There are no moral victories. We have to be truthful with ourselves at what needs to be corrected.”

One of the more glaring issues this season has been the Bills defense. Something we are not use to under McDermott-led teams. Against the Chiefs, the run defense was gashed for 245-yards despite KC missing two of their starters along the offensive line. But was that by design?

“You have to pick your poison,” McDermott said.

He went on to explain how when you have an explosive offense and a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes, you have to decide if you’re going to focus on shutting down the pass, or the run, because doing both is not realistic.

In focusing on thwarting the pass, McDermott explained that the Bills, at least, were in the game at the end as compared to other teams who were getting blown out after getting thrown all over.

Mahomes was asked about this very philosophy after the game.

“If teams are going to play us like this, you’re going to see us running the football, and we have the guys to do it,” Mahomes said.

McDermott made clear that despite back-to-back losses, beating the best is still what this team strives to do.

“I think the competition out there is elite,” McDermott said. “This is high standard, high quality football. We’ve come up short in these last two games and we’ll go back to the drawing board.”

While the Bills get a break from playing a top-ranked opponent when they head to New Jersey to face the 0-6 Jets next Sunday, their schedule still has its fair share of tough matchups remaining with games vs. the likes of the Seahawks and Steelers, just to name a few.

At the end of the day though, the Bills are 4-2 and in first place in the AFC East. While there is plenty that needs to be corrected on both sides of the ball, the season is far from over… even if after the last two games, it feels like it is.

Bills Wire’s Week 6 Player of the Game: WR Stefon Diggs

Buffalo Bills Week 6 Player of the Game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs: Wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

The Bills dropped their second-straight game to the Kansas City Chiefs, and while it may seem dismal, we have Player of the Week awards to hand out.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs continues to be a consistent bright spot in this offense, and despite low yards, he gets our nod for Player of the Week. Diggs caught six passes for 46 yards and had an excellent touchdown for the Bills. After drawing a defensive pass interference penalty on the goal line, Diggs caught the eventual touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen with a tip-toe catch on the edge of the end zone.

Diggs is actually a two-time recipient of Bills Wire’s Player of the Game after earning it in Buffalo’s Week 2 win over the Dolphins. The Bills have a chance to rebound in a big way against the winless Jets next week at MetLife Stadium.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes quickest in NFL history to 90 career passing touchdowns

Mahomes continues to stack up the NFL records.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has continued adding to his ever-growing list of broken NFL records. Earlier this season he became the quickest player to 10,000 career passing yards. This time the record is all about passing touchdowns for Mahomes.

With a touchdown pass to TE Travis Kelce in the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills, Mahomes has reached 90 career touchdown passes in just 37 career games played. According to the NFL’s research department, that number breaks the record in the Super Bowl era for the fewest games to hit 90 career passing touchdowns. It took Hall of Famer Dan Marino 40 games to reach that mark.

Mahomes has since added another touchdown pass to Kelce, bringing the total to 91 for the young gunslinger. He’s approaching the 100 career touchdown mark and could also become the fastest player to do so. Marino also holds that record, with 100 passing touchdowns in 44 career games. If Mahomes can notch just nine touchdown passes in the next six games, he’ll hold that record too.

Keep in mind that this game isn’t over yet and the Chiefs are seemingly moving the ball at will on the Bills. It’s likely that we could see Mahomes get a whole lot closer to that record by the end of this game.

Weather forecast: Rain showers expected for Chiefs vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills could get a little wet during Week 6 at Bills Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills could get a little wet on Monday afternoon at Bills Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.

Forecasts for the game from Weather.com, AccuWeather, and the National Weather Service all call for some chance of rain at kickoff and throughout the game. The chance ranges from 20% to 49% and only increases as the game goes on. Temperatures are expected to stay right around 50 degrees for the game, making it a chilly afternoon and evening in Buffalo.

One thing of note that could become problematic is the footing at Bills Stadium. Apparently, the grounds crew at Buffalo added more fill to the artificial turf ahead of this Week 6 game. That already produces difficulty when it comes to players getting their footing. Add in the wet conditions and we’re going to see a lot of players on the ground. That’s something that will likely impact the game for both teams.

This is not the first time the Chiefs and Bills have faced off in cool temperatures and rain at Orchard Park. Local Buffalo Meteorologist for WGRZ, Patrick Hammer, stumbled on this neat factoid.

Buffalo beat the Chiefs 23-14 during that “Monday Night Football” game. The good news is that the wet weather shouldn’t impact the Chiefs all that much in this one. Their Week 1 opener against the Houston Texans was a little wet. The team also practiced in rain showers at Arrowhead Stadium during their final practice of training camp.

As for wind, don’t expect it to play a big factor in the game. There will be northeast and east-facing winds with speeds up to 5-6 miles per hour. Kicker Harrison Butker seems to be back on track after struggling with missed PATs for a stretch. He also added some range this offseason and has made a season-long 58-yard field goal twice this year.
