Sean McDermott: ‘Hard to win’ with Bills’ turnover issues

Sean McDermott: ‘Hard to win’ with #Bills’ turnover issues:

Buffalo’s head coach was to the point in what obstacles prevented the Bills from winning their matchup against the Jets in New Jersey on Sunday.

“We didn’t play well enough to win,” Sean McDermott said.

The coach was also very direct in his assessment of the team’s play, particularly when it came to lost possessions.

“It’s hard to win the game when you turn the ball over,” he added. “We had opportunities and we shot ourselves in the foot.”

During the contest, the Bills experienced some offensive woes for the second week in a row.

QB Josh Allen scored Buffalo’s only two touchdowns, but he did so on the ground without tossing any in a season-low 205-yard passing game. He would lead the team in rushing going 86 yards on nine carries that included a career-long 36-yard designed run for a score in the first half.

He also fumbled twice and threw two interceptions, however, which led to the Jets scoring points. This after he threw two picks last week in the Bills win over the Packers.

It marks the third straight game in which the Bills have committed a red zone turnover.

“I’ll look at the tape, but I felt like we got a little bit too one-dimensional, at times, and they’ve got a good defense and a good defensive front,” head coach Sean McDermott said after the game.

The Jets’ defense added five total sacks of Allen to the day, finishing with a 20-17 win.

Nonetheless, the coach remains confident in his quarterback.

“I have ultimate trust in Josh,” McDermott said. “He’s a heck of a football player, it’s important to him, so he knows that those are non-negotiables, those plays right there. It’s gonna happen from time to time just by percentages and times you throw, (but) overall it’s gotta improve.”

Allen sees the opportunity to improve as well.

“Made some bad decisions tonight, really cost our team,” Allen said to the press. “A lot to learn from, a lot to grow from.”

Von Miller, Sean McDermott voice belief and trust in Bills

Von Miller, Sean McDermott voice belief and trust in #Bills:

The Bills lost to the Jets in New Jersey on Sunday, as a defense that was missing stars like LB Matt Milano and S Jordan Poyer also saw starters leave the game with injuries as well, such as DE Greg Rousseau and CB Kaiir Elam.

But that didn’t stop Von Miller.

In the third quarter, he sacked Jets QB Zach Wilson in the red zone, stripping the ball and giving Buffalo possession and good field position.

Buffalo’s offense would struggle with turnovers of their own which, ultimately, proved costly in a loss to a divisional foe.

Even still, the OLB’s belief in his team remains unwavering.

“It’s tough, losses like this are tough,” Miller said to the press. “I still feel like it’s good medicine, still believe in this team.”

Head coach Sean McDermott also echoed the sentiment in his postgame media session, throwing his support behind QB Josh Allen amidst a day that saw him commit two interceptions and two fumbles.

“I trust Josh, I have ultimate trust in Josh,” McDermott said during his postgame press conference. “He’s a heck of a football player so he knows that those are non-negotiable moves. It’s gonna happen from time to time but overall it has to improve.”

Despite the outcome of the game, like his coach Miller sees a silver lining, the value that can be extracted, and things that can be learned from to build on going into a matchup next Sunday with the 7-1 Minnesota Vikings.

“We had chances to win it tonight, it wasn’t like we just, you know the whole game was just trash,” Miller added. “We did some good things but we didn’t do enough good.”

Bills’ Josh Allen made NFL history again in regular season finale

#Bills’ Josh Allen made NFL history again in regular season finale:

On a chilly Sunday night in Western New York, the Bills got a warmup for next Saturday’s first-round playoff game.

They clinched the AFC East beating a division rival in the Jets, and QB Josh Allen made some more NFL history in the process.

The Bills QB became the first player in NFL history to have over 4,000 passing yards and 750 rushing yards in a single season.

Allen finished the regular season with 4,407 passing yards and 763 rushing yards.

In Sunday’s win over the Jets, he also broke his own previous single-season franchise record for completions (401).

Making history has become a regular part of the fourth-year QB’s repertoire.

He even had his game jersey and cleats from his Week 16 win over New England exhibited in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he became the first player in NFL history with at least 100 touchdown passes and at least 20 rushing touchdowns in his first four seasons.

He’d add to both numbers in the games that followed.

In Sunday’s game alone he threw for 239 passing yards and two TDs along with 63 yards rushing on five carries.

What drives Allen to play at the level he does, and to rack up these numbers and historic achievements along the way is his focus on getting to and winning the Super Bowl.

“Nobody at the end of careers looks back and really figures out how many times you won your division,” Allen said to the media after the game.

“I think the main goal is the Super Bowl and winning the division just gives you an opportunity to do that. So that’s really our focus. It’s great, it’s fine, hats and shirts are cool, but at the end of the day, we got a lot more work to do.”

Bills’ Stefon Diggs makes NFL history vs. the Jets

#Bills’ Stefon Diggs makes NFL history vs. the #Jets:

The Bills clinched their second consecutive division crown, winning the AFC East in a 27-10 victory at home against the Jets.

WR Stefon Diggs played a big part in the win as well. He had nine receptions on fourteen targets for 81 yards and an impressive toe-tap touchdown catch on the sideline of the endzone

But that’s not all.

During the contest, the wideout caught his 224th catch since joining Buffalo in a 2020 trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

That was the most catches by any player in their first two seasons with a team in NFL history.

Diggs would finish the day and the regular season with 230 total catches as Bill, setting the new league mark in the newly extended 17 game season.

The previous record was 223 catches, set by WR Wes Welker while with New England in 2007-08.

Diggs had some more career numbers on the day, hauling in eight receptions in the first half alone which was a new career-high. In his seven years in the league, the Maryland product has had three previous occasions in which he finished the first half with seven catches.

He also finished the day with 103 catches on the year to become the first player in franchise history with 100-plus receptions in consecutive seasons.

Diggs had his QB’s full support both on and off the field as well.

“Throughout the year, he didn’t have as many targets and receptions as he did last year,” Josh Allen said while addressing the media after the game. “And maybe that was a little bit by design just to try to keep him fresh in the hopes that we have an opportunity to be in the playoffs. But he looks really good. And I want to try to throw it to him as much as possible because again with the ball in his hands, you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Bills and their pro bowl receiver will now turn his focus towards their first-round playoff game against the Patriots on Saturday in Orchard Park.

Bills reflect on 9 sacks vs. Jets: ‘Everybody eats’

#Bills reflect on 9 sacks vs. #Jets: ‘Everybody eats’

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]
Rookie QB and second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Zach Wilson faced a Buffalo defense on Sunday that he’ll deal with twice a season every year as a Jet.
It was a trial-by-fire, and Wilson got cooked.
The Bills had nine sacks for a total of 82 yards lost, and they held the Jets to a franchise-record low for net passing yards in a game (5). They also allowed only four fourth downs which were the fewest in franchise history.

The nine sacks against the Jets were Buffalo’s most in a game under Sean McDermott, and their most in a game since 2011 (10 against WFT Oct. 30, 2011). They now have 19 sacks in their last four games.

The first sack of the day came on Jets WR Jamison Crowder in a failed trick play while the other eight came on Wilson. It was the most he’s been wrapped up in a game this season.

Bills sack leader DE Mario Addison (7) and S Jordan Poyer had two sacks apiece. Poyer’s two takedowns were good for a single-game career-high, and his sack season total (3) is also a career-high.

DT Ed Oliver had a sack and a half in the game along with three quarterback hits, and LB Matt Milano, DE Boogie Basham, and DE A.J. Epenesa each had a sack as well while DE Jerry Hughes also added a half-sack

“Everybody eats,” Oliver said to the press after the game. “Everybody was just on it. It just seemed like everybody was flying around. He wanted to run around and just our overlap and everybody just rushing. So that was a good sight to see especially in the game like this with so much on the line.”

“We won a lot on first down,” fellow DT Harrison Phillips said during his media session. “Our coverage did some great things to make him hold the ball and then our offense scoring early being up kind of the whole game lets us get after the quarterback.”

Buffalo finished the regular season with the top-scoring defense for the first time in franchise history and as the number one total defense in the NFL.

“I just think overall they’re playing faster,” HC Sean McDermott said while addressing the media. “We had some young players mixed in there and then you’ve got some older guys with Jerry and Mario and that blend has come together at the right time.”

And McDermott wasn’t the only head coach in the game to compliment the defense’s level of play.

Jets HC Robert Saleh called the Bills defense a “buzzsaw” after the contest.

“Obviously they are one of the best defenses in football,” Saleh said during his postgame press conference. “We just could not run the ball very well. Obviously, it was tough sledding. And any time we got something going, their front was dominant.”

The Bills clinched the AFC East with the win and are now the No. 3 seed on the back of their four-game winning streak. They’ll host the Patriots for a third matchup this season on Saturday evening for the first-round Wild Card game.

Bills vs. Jets: 3 keys to a Buffalo win

#Bills vs. #Jets: 3 keys to a Buffalo win:

The Bills punched their ticket to the playoffs last week, clinching a spot with a 29-15 victory over Atlanta at home.

Buffalo can secure the division crown this Sunday for a second straight year. They’ll have a chance to do just that as they host the Jets in the final game of the regular season.

Per ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Bills have a 95.6% chance to win the AFC East and the second-best chances in the NFL to both make the Super Bowl (27.6%) and to win it (15.4%).

With the division on the line, here are three keys to a win for the Bills (10-6) against the Jets (4-12):

Bills QB Josh Allen has achievement enshrined in Hall of Fame

#Bills QB Josh Allen has achievement enshrined in Hall of Fame”

Josh Allen is officially in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The fourth year pro hasn’t been given a bust or yellow jacket, but one of his latest historic achievements is now being exhibited in Canton, OH.

Allen recently became the first and only player in NFL history with at least 100 touchdown passes and 20 rushing touchdowns in his first four seasons.

He accomplished the milestone during the Bills 33-21 Week 16 victory over the New England Patriots, in which he threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 64 yards rushing.

His shoes and jersey that he wore in the game is now on display in the Hall of Fame’s Pro Football Today Gallery.

For the past two seasons, breaking NFL and Bills franchise records has become a part of the Josh Allen experience.

Becoming the first player in history to set new ones altogether is just the latest in a growing list of accolades for the Bills QB.

And while it’s too far too soon to tell if he will be inducted into the HOF after his playing days are over, if he continues his trend of making NFL history then we may just see him permanently enshrined in Canton someday as well.

Jets defenders, Robert Saleh react to latest porous performance

The Jets have allowed 145 points in their last four games. What is it going to take for New York’s defense to right the ship?

The Jets have not been able to stop a nosebleed for the past month.

New York has allowed 175 points in its last four games and at least 45 points in three of its last four games. That’s after a Bills offense that mustered just nine points against the Jaguars in Week 9 came to MetLife Stadium and scored 45 points to go along with 489 yards of offense on Sunday. Josh Allen threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns, while the Jets’ secondary had no answer for Stefon Diggs, who finished with eight catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

“We’re trying to do things the right way and see where we can help our guys out,” Robert Saleh said after New York’s seventh loss. “Obviously, it’s not good enough. It always starts with me. We got eight games left. We have to figure it out.”

The Bills got it done through the air and on the ground, with Allen connecting with eight different pass-catchers. Explosive plays were the name of the game for Buffalo through the air, as Diggs averaged 20.3 yards per catch, while Gabriel Davis caught three passes for 105 yards. Emmanuel Sanders averaged 13.5 yards per catch on his two receptions for 27 yards, while Dawson Knox caught a 17-yard pass.

Devin Singletary, Matt Brieda and Zach Moss proved to be an effective trio out of the backfield. Singletary rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown and Moss chipped in 27 yards and a score, but it was Brieda who had the best game of them all with 28 rushing yards and a touchdown. He added three catches for 22 yards and a touchdown.

“In the simplest of terms, lack of execution,” Sheldon Rankins said. “Whether it be guys not understanding assignments or just not getting to a place when they need to a second too late or whatever. At the end of the day, lack of execution. It showed up over and over and we’re continuing to work to fix it.”

The Jets benefit from a softer matchup when the Dolphins come to MetLife Stadium next weekend. Miami just upset the Ravens on Thursday Night Football, but its offense has been among the worst in football this season. That could serve as a reprieve for Jeff Ulbrich’s unit after weeks of playing high-powered offenses that it simply does not have the talent to keep up with.

“When things aren’t going right, people start looking for the easy way out or an out,” C.J. Mosley said. “As long as I’m here and I have the C on my chest, I can’t let that happen. If players start to see that or we start to see that, we gotta make sure we call each other out, ’cause we all have a job here. We all came here for a certain reason and when you start talking about wins and losses, the big picture can kind of get lost.”

Mike White reacts to first NFL struggles: ‘You just gotta get better’

Mike White played poorly against the Bills, throwing four interceptions. Here’s what the Jets QB had to say about his first NFL struggles:

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=l7iiajjUTg-1615586-7498&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

Mike White’s first start for the Jets at MetLife Stadium was a scintillating experience that featured over 400 yards passing, three touchdowns and a thrilling upset of the Bengals.

His second start in East Rutherford wasn’t nearly as good.

The Bills got the best of White on Sunday, picking him off four times and limiting him to 251 yards. White led just one drive that resulted in a touchdown in the Jets’ 45-17 loss to the Bills, struggling to emulate his success against Cincinnati while taking on a Buffalo defense that entered Week 10 ranked first against the pass with just 177 yards allowed per game.

“They’re a really good defense,” White said. “They had a lot of pre and post-snap rotation and gave us a lot of different looks. We just didn’t execute at the end of the day. That’s going to happen and you gotta be able to adjust to those things. This is the NFL. Guys are good. You have to be able to make adjustments.”

White’s afternoon got off to a fortuitous start, as he almost threw an interception on New York’s first drive of the game before firing one on the following possession. White had some temporary success moving the ball down the field in the second quarter, but the Jets did not get into the end zone.

The Bills ruled the second half, as White tossed three interceptions before departing with an injury with 4:53 left in the fourth quarter. Buffalo turned all of its second-half picks into eventual points, helping it extend its already commanding lead into blowout territory.

“It’s very tough,” White said. “Not just for me personally, but for the team as a teammate. Guys are fighting their tails off for four quarters and you turn the ball over four times, it’s tough. The only thing we can do is get better from it and not let this beat us twice.”

Is White’s tenure as the Jets’ starting quarterback over after his disastrous performance against the Bills? Robert Saleh left that open-ended, saying that Zach Wilson is “still dealing with some things” in his recovery from a sprained PCL. That might give White one more week to get back on track.

Either way, White’s first NFL struggles cast serious doubt over his ability to consistently produce. It’s one thing to sneak up on a team and win for one weekend. It’s another to face the best of the best and get the job done.

“You just gotta get better and learn from it and how teams are going to attack you and just turn the page and get better,” White said.

Mike White among Studs & Duds from Jets’ Week 10 loss to Bills

Mike White and the Jets’ entire defense headline our studs and duds from New York’s embarrassing 38-3 loss to the Bills.

The Jets have played the Bills well — albeit in defeat — recently, but that was not the case on Sunday afternoon. Buffalo marched into MetLife Stadium and dominated New York for all four quarters in a 45-17 win.

Mike White struggled to the tune of multiple interceptions, while the Jets couldn’t stop a nosebleed defensively for the fourth straight game.

Here are the studs and duds — mostly duds — from New York’s embarrassing loss to the Bills.
