5 takeaways from the Bills’ 13-6 loss to the Jets

Five takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ Week 17 loss to the New York Jets.

This one didn’t mean a whole lot to the Bills, but in the one thing they had to do against the New York Jets in Week 17, they failed miserably.

And it had nothing to do with the final 10-3 score in favor of the Jets, either.

With that, here’s five takeaways from the Bills’ loss to the Jets:

Injury bug bites Bills

The Bills lost, who cares? The game had no meaning for Buffalo. The main goal was to not get injured. Well, the Bills did that.

Throughout the course of the game, the Bills lost cornerback Levi Wallace and offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe. Both plays suffered ankle injuries. Wallace was injured as he intercepted Jets quarterback Sam Darnold while Nsekhe went down on a running play.

Losing Wallace is a big loss. The Bills will want their No. 2 cornerback in the Wild Card round. The Bills will play either the Chiefs or Texans in that game. Both teams sport good passing offenses. In Nsekhe, he’s provided better offensive line play than rookie Cody Ford at tackle. He looked to have re-injured his ankle injury that kept him out for five games. If that’s the case, he’s likely done for the playoffs.

Sure, Josh Allen wasn’t injured in this one, but these could still be big losses for the Bills, who’ve remained relatively healthy all season.

WATCH: Bills give Lorenzo Alexander send off

Buffalo Bills give LB Lorenzo Alexander send off in Week 17 vs. New York Jets.

While the Bills had nothing on the line against the Jets in Week 17, it could be a special day for linebacker Lorenzo Alexander.

The veteran could see his NFL career come to an end after the team’s playoff run this year. He didn’t want to talk to reporters about that this week. As a Wild Card team, the Bills won’t be playing at home again.

With that in mind, the Bills and head coach Sean McDermott gave a special moment to Alexander.

As the team’s second-string players started to enter the game, McDermott called a timeout and substituted out Alexander so fans and teammates could honor him with a clap.

Check out the cool moment here:

Levi Wallace injures ankle on interception vs. Jets

Buffalo Bills CB Levi Wallace interceptions Jets QB Sam Darnold and suffers ankle injury.

Bills cornerback Levi Wallace caught a pass from Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.

Then things went bad from there.

Buffalo’s No. 2 cornerback behind Tre’Davious White injured his ankle upon landing.

Here’s the play:

Wallace eventually made it to the Bills sideline but was not putting weight on his injured leg as trainers were helping him. A medical cart came out of the tunnel and helped bring Wallace to the locker room, too. A bad sign.

If Wallace misses Buffalo’s postseason, Kevin Johnson would fill in for him. Wallace and Johnson have rotated in and out across from White for most of the season, but Wallace has played slightly more snaps each game.

Thanks to John Brown, Tre White could set PFF record

Buffalo Bills CB Tre’Davious White could set a Pro Football Focus benchmark.

Folks typically either love or hate Pro Football Focus’ analysis, but when it comes down to hard numbers, those stats are undisputed.

Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White has a massive one in his favor heading into his team’s season finale against the Jets.

According to PFF, White could become the only cornerback since the outlet’s start (2006) to have played 500-plus coverage snaps and not allow a single touchdown while leading the NFL in interceptions.

So what does wide receiver John Brown have to do with that? Here’s where NFL research comes in.

In Buffalo’s 24-17 loss to the Patriots in Week 16, Brown scored a 53-yard touchdown with cornerback Stephon Gilmore in coverage. It was the first time this season Gilmore was scored on, and Gilmore has played well-above 500 snaps this season as well.

Combining these stats means and looking back to PFF’s numbers, White can likely set this feat against the Jets in Week 17. White may be a candidate to be inactive for the game, even. Therefore, his numbers will remain the same, but that might not be good.

White is currently in a three-way tie for the most interceptions in the NFL with Gilmore and the Vikings’ Anthony Harris. If either of those two gets to seven, then White’s PFF record is voided based on him no longer leading the league in picks.

Having said that, both Gilmore and Harris, like White, are on playoff-bound teams and could also see limited playing time in Week 17, maybe.

If the cards fall in the right places, White could set an awfully high benchmark for a guy not even getting considerations for Defensive Player of the Year.

5 storylines to watch for during Bills vs. Jets

Five Buffalo Bills storylines to watch for during their Week 17 meeting with the New York Jets.

The Bills are hosting the New York Jets to roundout their 2019 regular season.

Things are set for both sides standings-wise heading into this one, and we’ll start with the most obviously overlying storyline for the Bills.

Here are five storylines to watch for as the Bills host the Jets in Week 17:

How much will starters play?

Naturally, this.

Only Sean McDermott’s coaching staff knows the true answer to this one, but all we know is the Bills’ starting players will see playing time, or at least a “majority” of them will, including quarterback Josh Allen. It’s not the worst plan, but the Bills have to be extremely careful for the obvious.

If an injury occurs to any starter, let alone a guy like Allen, McDermott is going to be heavily criticized. Also making things a bit more nerve-wrecking is the Jets. Their defensive coordinator is Gregg Williams, who has a history of wanting to put some heat on opposing players, quarterbacks specifically. It doesn’t feel comfortable that Jets safety Jamal Adams said he wants to put a “hunting” on the Bills this weekend, too.

Having said all that, playing the starters for a very, very brief time is a fair move. But don’t get too cute.

Bills vs. Jets: Wednesday injury reports

Buffalo Bills (10-5)

Did not practice

  • DE Shaq Lawson (hamstring)
  • OL Ty Nsekhe (ankle)

Notes:

The injury reports for the Bills are based on estimation as the Bills did not actually practice due to the holiday. … OL Mitch Morse (ankle) was listed as a full participant. … Per The Athletic, Shaq Lawson was injured last game but did play after first showing signs of injury.

New York Jets (6-9)

Did not practice

  • OL Tom Compton (calf)
  • CB Nate Hairston (illness)
  • OL Alex Lewis (ankile)
  • WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/ knee)

Limited

  • S Jamal Adams (ankle)
  • WR Robby Anderson (calf)
  • OL Kelvin Beachum (back/ ankle)

‘Majority’ of Bills starters to play vs. Jets

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott says starters will see playing time vs. New York Jets.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott made an interesting decision on Wednesday ahead of his team’s season finale against the New York Jets.

McDermott announced that his team’s starting players, or at least a “majority” of them, will play in Week 17.

The decision is an interesting one because the Bills (10-5) are heading to the playoffs and are also locked into their seeding. The Bills have nothing to gain in the game via standings as Buffalo will be the fifth-seed in the AFC playoffs, regardless of outcome.

Still, starters, including quarterback Josh Allen, will play.

“We talked to the team and we’re going to play a majority of the guys and they’re going to practice this week and they’re going to play,” said McDermott. “To go into detail will take some time, but the majority of guys will play, not all of them. Josh (Allen) will play.”

But McDermott added that it might not be as cut-and-dry as that. Amount of playing time for starters is still up in the air.

“They’re not all going to play the same amount in the game. We’re going to be smart with that, but it’s important that we get work in fundamentally and in terms of execution and we stay as sharp as can be,” McDermott said.

In this scenario, playing the Bills’ first-string players, particularly on offense, could be a good move in terms of the “rust” factor. It’s hard for teams to simulate actual game time and with how healthy the Bills have been this season, playing the starting offense a few series might be a safe play.

But playing them past the first quarter would be an outrageous move by McDermott & Co. at this point of the year. Don’t get overly cute.

Speaking of which, McDermott was asked if backup quarterback Matt Barkley could see playing time in the contest. Sounded reassuring.

“Yeah, he could,” said McDermott. “Yes.”

6 things to know about the Bills’ Week 17 opponent, the Jets

Six things to know about the Buffalo Bills’ Week 17 opponent, the New York Jets.

Like the Patriots of Week 16, the Jets of Week 17 are another team you just love to hate.

But this week, the hate is a little less. That’s because the Bills are heading to the postseason while the Jets… are not.

Here’s are six of the latest things to know about the Bills’ Week 17 opponent, the Jets:

New York Jets head coach Adam Gase. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

Adam Gase under fire, but staying

The Jets are heading into this one at 6-9 overall and out of the playoff picture. Quarterback Sam Darnold once upon a time predicted that the Jets could run the table and stay in the playoff picture since their schedule down the stretch was much easier. Well, that didn’t happen.

Because of this underwhelming success, head coach Adam Gase has taken heavy heat in only his first year with the team. But team CEO Christopher Johnson said Gase will return in 2020 already, so there’s that. Maybe that’ll be some good news for the Bills.

But with all that in mind, a nice bombshell was dropped on Christmas Eve by the New York Daily News. The outlet reports that Gase does not care about fan criticism and responds to it by saying, “I’m rich as [expletive]” to various folks. A source also reportedly told the NYDN that Gase is “an insecure guy” that might also have a burner account on social media

Sounds fun.
