Chiefs rookies learned a lesson from their first regular season loss: ‘You have to dig in’

Kansas City #Chiefs rookies learned a lesson from their first regular season loss: ‘You have to dig in’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas Chiefs won’t go undefeated this season, and for many in the organization, that was never the goal. Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills highlighted some things to work on and served as a teachable moment for the rookies.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid held his weekly Zoom press conference with reporters on Monday. He opened up about the lesson his rookie class will learn from the loss to the Bills.

“You have to dig in, man. These things – these should hurt. You spend a lot of time and preparation for these games and effort and so you have to reach inside as coaches and players, not just players here. You have to figure out the problems and then work to solve them.” said Reid. “I know I have that kind of locker room, so I know the guys will do that. I know the coaches will do that, too, but you can’t just say everything’s going to be okay. That’s not how this works. You have to dig in, and it has to be – there has to be some – you have to check the ego at the door and do some self-evaluation there.”

Sunday’s game marked rookie receiver Xavier Worthy’s first score since Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It marked the fourth receiving touchdown and sixth total touchdown of the season. Worthy tallied four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, with his four receptions tied for a single-game career-high and his 61 yards as his second-highest single-game output this season.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid comments on no longer being undefeated this season: ‘I go forward’

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid comments on no longer being undefeated this season: ‘I go forward’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters on Monday for his weekly Zoom press conference. He addressed the team’s recent loss to the Buffalo Bills, which ended its chances at an undefeated record.

“I go forward and try to exhaust what team we’re playing, and I present that to the players that way and expect them to do the same. So I don’t really hear a lot of that talk from them or think they care too much about that, other than exhausting yourself the best you can to prepare yourself for that team there that week.” Reid said. “Then you get to a point where you say, Listen, I’ve done everything I possibly can. Here’s a product. And you go play.”

The Chiefs have maintained the mindset that the goal is another Super Bowl, not perfection, as they prepare for this Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Kansas City holds a half-game lead over the Bills for the top spot in the AFC, with Buffalo on a bye in Week 12.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals the reason Kingsley Suamataia was Inactive in Week 11

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals the reason Kingsley Suamataia was Inactive in Week 11 | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday for his weekly Zoom press conference. He revealed his reason for keeping rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia inactive for Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills.

“Yeah, Kingsley (Suamataia) is gonna be okay. It’s just sometimes you take a step back, take a step forward,” said Reid. “That’s what we felt we needed to do there. So we’ll go from there and see how things work out here as he continues to work forward.”

Suamataia’s struggles as the starter are noted throughout the early parts of the season, as Wanya Morris has taken the reigns back in recent weeks. Reid addressed his performance and the potential of adding a veteran in free agency.

“So I actually thought Wanya (Morris) got a little bit better. This week, he’s been doing that for the most part every week, but the injury stepped on it last week for a while,” said Reid. “But I felt like he did some good things for a young guy; he improved and will continue to improve with reps there, and then, as far as the veteran player goes, (Brett) Veach is always keeping his eyes so he would be the one that heads that up and, he bird dogs, all that.”

The Chiefs will look to start a new winning streak this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. With a few games left before the postseason, they need victories to remain atop the AFC.

Chiefs TE Noah Gray isn’t celebrating career game after Week 11 loss: ‘Doesn’t really matter’

Kansas City #Chiefs tight end Noah Gray isn’t celebrating career game after Week 11 loss: ‘Doesn’t really matter’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Noah Gray was a prime target for Patrick Mahomes in Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. In his postgame press conference, Gray explained to reporters that his accolades were second to the team’s success.

“I mean, it doesn’t really matter because the only thing I think that does matter is the win, but that was a great Buffalo team out there. Played us extremely hard.” said Gray. “All the guys on our side played extremely hard and grind it out from the O-Line receivers to Pat (Patrick Mahomes). Yeah, and, unfortunately, we lost, but you know, that was a really good Buffalo team, and unfortunate that we lost, but we’re looking forward to next week.”

In the first half, on a third-and-two, Patrick Mahomes found Gray for a two-yard touchdown reception to give the Chiefs the lead, 14-13. Gray caught a one-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to pull the Chiefs within two of the Bills, 23-21.

The scores marked Gray’s first touchdowns this season, registering his first-career multi-touchdown performance. His two touchdown receptions on the season match his single-season career high from the 2023 season. He ended the night by tying a single-game career-high with four receptions for 23 yards and two touchdowns.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reacts to first loss of the season: ‘You can use it as fuel’

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reacts to first loss of the season: ‘You can use it as fuel’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs are no longer undefeated, but that wasn’t the goal, says quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who addresses reporters during Sunday’s postgame press conference.

“You can use it as fuel. I mean, like I said, it’s a good football team, so nothing to hang your head out head on losing to them, but we feel like we can play better,” said Mahomes. “So we’ll get back to work and try to use this as a spark so that we can be a better football team in the end. The undefeated thing was cool, but that’s not our ultimate goal. So we’ll keep building towards that.”

Mahomes began the game with an interception but settled down to throw three consecutive touchdown passes. He threw his second on fourth down of the Chief’s last drive as he faced constant defensive coverage downfield. The loss was crushing but not nearly as bad as their last defeat on Christmas the previous season, according to the reigning Super Bowl MVP.

“No, not in a sense,” said Mahomes. “I mean, you hope you have the same result to end it, I’ll say that, but at the end of the day, that’s a really good football team. It’s gonna take your best football to beat great football teams. And we didn’t play our best football today, and they went out there and beat us. That’s how it rolls in the NFL, so I give them all the respect. That’s gonna be a good football team that we’ll probably see again.”

The Bills are only a half-game behind the Chiefs for the top seed in the AFC, adding more fuel to their reasons to finish the year strong and hold on to the coveted first-round bye in the postseason.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals lesson learned from loss to Bills: ‘We’ve got to take care of business’

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals lesson learned from loss to the Buffalo #Bills: ‘We’ve got to take care of business’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs won’t go undefeated this year as they suffered their first loss on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters after the game, describing the first loss as a learning experience.

“Things you can learn, the main thing is that they’re a good team and, if you have a few mistakes in there, they can capitalize on them, but you keep battling, and normally good things will happen,” said Reid. “They did a nice job on that last drive, so we’ve got to take care of business on those.”

Reid pointed out another miscue on the sidelines from Xavier Worthy, which eliminated a big play from the stat sheet.

“Yeah, he’ll (Worthy) get better at those,” said Reid. “Then we’ll give the ball a little quicker as we go, so I’ve got to see it and look at it on tape and see exactly if, if he was able to drag his foot, if that was possible, if that’s the case, then he can learn from.”

Worthy was the team’s leading receiver on Sunday, so there were positives; however, Reid believes he still should have called more running plays.

“I probably could call some more runs; when it was all said and done, we had opportunities,” said Reid. “We did a pretty nice job with it, with the exception of the short yardage.”

Leading rusher Kareem Hunt had 60 yards on 14 carries, a far less workload than he’s become used to since signing with the team.

Chiefs DE George Karlaftis discusses matchup with the Bills: ‘We’ve got to bring our A-Game’

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis discusses matchup with the Buffalo #Bills: ‘We’ve got to bring our A-Game’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs defense had a late-game scare against the Denver Broncos last week but is using the experience to sharpen up for Week 11. Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis explained to reporters on Friday that he is very familiar with this Sunday’s opponent.

“They got great guys all over the board, starting with their quarterback, running back, offensive line, receivers, and great defense, too. It’s a tough environment to play,” said Karlaftis. “We obviously played a lot of close games with them, having won once at least since I’ve been here in the regular season. Beat them in the playoffs, obviously. We got to bring our A-Game this week.”

The defense will focus on Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl quarterback Josh Allen, who has played almost error-free football this season. Karlaftis acknowledged Allen’s talent and the need to slow him down to secure the victory.

“What’s unique about him is he could run. First of all, he’s like one of the best quarterbacks in the league, right? That goes without saying.” said Karlaftis. “He can move as well as he does, and he’s my size, if not a little bigger. You respect that even a little more. So he’s, like I said, one of those elite guys who can make all the throws with his dangerous feet. So, you got to have stuff, and you got to prepare all week for a guy like that.”

The Bills are one of the top teams in the conference and are well aware of the potential impact a victory over the league-leading Chiefs could have on their postseason seeding.

Chiefs OL Trey Smith describes playing in Buffalo: ‘It’s crazy out there’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith describes playing in Buffalo surrounded by #Bills Mafia: ‘It’s crazy out there’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round last postseason on their way to Super Bowl LVIII. The Buffalo victory surprised many critics but firmly eliminated the notion that they couldn’t win away from Arrowhead Stadium.

Starting offensive right guard, Trey Smith spoke to reporters on Thursday about the atmosphere in Buffalo during their last matchup in January.

“Yeah, Buffalo, the fans definitely brought it. It’s a great environment. I have a lot of respect for that team and that organization, and you can sense their fans’ passion. I mean, I remember pulling up on the bus, throwing snowballs and stuff at us, jumping on the tables. It’s crazy out there.” said Smith. “It’s a great fan base. It’s going to be a good challenge. Like I said, have a great game day environment and some great fans.”

Smith and the Chiefs greatly respect the Bills and understand the importance of this Sunday’s game. Before their postseason matchup, the two teams met during the regular season in Kansas City, with the Bills prevailing following the infamous offensive offsides call on Kadarius Toney in the fourth quarter.
