Causes for concern as the Bills take on the Patriots in Week 16

The Buffalo Bills will host the New England Patriots in Week 16 at Highmark Stadium.

The Bills (11-3) and Patriots (3-11) have trended in different directions this season. The Bills have won eight of their last nine games while the Patriots have lost five of their last six.

Even though Buffalo is favored to win the game, there are always a few things that make winning difficult each week. The Bills will need to be wary of them.

Here are three causes for concern for the Bills against the Patriots in Week 16:

Question marks in the secondary

Getty Images

What would make Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s day a bit easier on Sunday would be if the Bills are down members of their secondary. Safeties Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp, along with cornerback Rasul Douglas, all missed Week 15’s win over the Detroit Lions.

Although the Bills won last week, they allowed almost 494 passing yards from Lions QB Jared Goff to go along with five touchdowns.

Douglas, Hamlin, and Rapp all are listed as questionable heading into Week 16. Buffalo’s linebackers are banged up a bit, too. Matt Milano, Dorian Williams, and Baylon Spector all are carrying the same designation.

Containing QB Drake Maye

USA Today Sports

The Bills have yet to face the rookie quarterback out of the University of North Carolina. Maye has been a bright spot on an otherwise dim Patriots season. He has shown poise and instincts as a young signal caller and he can beat you with both his arm and legs.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott has had success going against rookie quarterbacks in his career with an 8-3 record. Maye is one of the more challenging ones. We’ll see how the Bills game plan for him.

Overlooking an opponent

The Bills are coming off a win over the Lions, whom many consider to be the best team in the NFL. Combine that with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year and the Bills have proven they can beat anyone.

What’s difficult is bringing the same intensity for a Week 16 matchup with the Patriots as you did in a “Super Bowl preview” type of game. The Bills’ discipline and execution will be tested by a division rival looking to play spoiler.

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Patriots in Week 16

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Patriots in Week 16

The Buffalo Bills will play the New England Patriots at home at Highmark Stadium in Week 16.

The Bills (11-3) are looking to stay hot after beating the Detroit Lions last week, the NFC’s No. 1 seed. The Bills have won eight of their previous nine games. The Patriots (3-11) enter the game on a four-game losing streak.

The Bills are favored by 14 points. It will be the first meeting between the Bills and Patriots this season. The Bills won the last matchup 27-21 in Week 18 of last year.

Even though the Patriots have three wins this year, nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. Buffalo will need to execute its game plan to pick up its 12th win of the year.

With that, here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 16:

Keep Drake Maye in the pocket

Imagn Images

Given that the Patriots offensive line has struggled constantly this year, rookie quarterback Drake Maye has had to be in scramble more than he’d like. Without a consistent push in the running game or protection to get the ball out in the passing game, Maye has done what Josh Allen did at the beginning of his career. He’s putting the offense into his own hands and trying to make something positive happen with his legs.

The off-script playing style that Maye provides works at times, too. From Weeks 6 to 13, Maye has averaged 41.6 rushing yards per game. The Bills would be wise to keep an eye on him leaving the pocket.

Dominate the line of scrimmage

Imagn Images

The Bills’ defensive line has struggled at times against the run. If the Patriots are able to get a running game going, it would make things a lot easier for their rookie QB in a hostile road environment. But even with the Bills’ inconsistencies on their defensive line, that is a tall task for New England.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Patriots have the worst starting offensive line in the NFL heading into Week 16.

If the Bills’ defensive line plays up to its potential, stopping the run and pressuring Maye in the passing game, then the Bills should take care of business in Week 16 by attacking the worst offensive line in the league.

Win the turnover battle

USA Today Sports

In lopsided matchups like the one we’ll see in Week 16 (Bills favored by 14), the thing that can hurt you the most is if you don’t take care of the ball. No matter how much better a team is than another, if you give the lesser team a few extra opportunities it can cause issues. One way the Bills can make sure they walk out of Week 16 with a win is by not turning it over.

For the Bills, that means continuing to do what they have all season. They are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the best turnover differential in the NFL (+18).

The Buffalo Bills held off a dangerous Detroit Lions team in Week 15 to win, 48-42, in what many considered a “Super Bowl preview”.

Quarterback Josh Allen and the offense continued their red-hot streak by scoring 48 points, their second straight 40-point game and eighth straight 30-point game. Meanwhile, the defense made a few game-altering plays to hold off a Lions offense that ranks first in the NFL.

The Bills improved to 11-3 on the year and currently sit in second place in the AFC.

Bills secondary with massive concerns ahead of Lions clash

Bills secondary with massive concerns ahead of Lions clash

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced on Friday that starting cornerback Rasul Douglas will miss the Week 15 game at the Detroit Lions due to his knee injury suffered in the loss to the LA Rams last week.

This will be Douglas’ first game missed this season. He and Christian Benford have proven to be a reliable duo of outside corners since Douglas was brought over in a trade at last year’s deadline.

Without Douglas, the Bills could look to former first-round draft pick Kaiir Elam to take over the starting position. Ja’Marcus Ingram, a University at Buffalo product, is also in the mix for playing time.

Not only will Buffalo be down a starter at corner, but their safeties are banged up as well. Both starters Taylor Rapp (neck/shoulder) and Damar Hamlin (back/ribs) were limited in practice on Friday.

Rapp didn’t practice until Friday this week, and is officially questionable for the Detroit game.

The good news for the Bills is that he was able to play in last week’s game after dealing with similar circumstances leading up to that game.

As for Hamlin, he popped up on the injury report Thursday after practicing in full on Wednesday. Like Rapp, Hamlin is questionable for Week 15.

Bills’ Dalton Kincaid has positive injury sign ahead of Lions matchup

There was positive news regarding Buffalo Bills’ second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid ahead of Week 15’s matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Kincaid was able to practice without a red non-contact jersey at Friday’s workout. His full participation at practice did come with a sleeve on his left leg, but he looked comfortable moving around:

Kincaid has missed the last three games after hurting his knee in a win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 10.

The Bills went 2-1 in his absence as Dawson Knox became more involved in the offense.

So far this year, Kincaid has reeled in 34 catches for 356 yards and 2 touchdowns. Although he is officially listed as questionable for Week 15, it looks like he will be able to see the field and continue to build on his sophomore campaign.

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Lions in Week 15

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Lions in Week 15

The Buffalo Bills will play the Detroit Lions on the road at Ford Field in Week 15.

The Bills (10-3) are looking to bounce back from a loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week, while the Lions (12-1) are riding an 11-game win streak.

The Lions are favored by 2.5 points in Week 15. The two teams haven’t met since Thanksgiving Day in 2022 when the Bills won in dramatic fashion, 28-25.

The Lions are at the top of most power rankings ahead of Sunday. Buffalo will need to execute its game plan to pick up its eleventh win of the year.

With that, here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 15:

Attack the Lions’ man coverage

Getty Images

The Lions are a defense that stays true to who they are. According to Pro Football Focus, they currently rank first in the NFL in man coverage rate (42.4%) and dead last in zone coverage rate (53.2%). And, they rank in the top three in defensive success rate while in man coverage. They will line up man-to-man and make opposing receivers win their matchups.

Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady has provided quarterback Josh Allen with simple looks to beat man coverage this year. If Allen can take advantage of the one-on-one matchups, it will be a long day for the Lions’ secondary. Look for Allen to lean on Amari Cooper against man, and if Keon Coleman (wrist) can play, he is usually a mismatch one-on-one with his athletic ability.

Better performance from the D-line

Getty Images

The Bills’ defensive line had a rough outing against the Rams They couldn’t generate a pass rush and they were getting pushed around against the run. They will need to step up considering their opponent. The Lions have arguably the best offensive line in football when healthy. Penei Sewell is their best player, as his 88.5 overall PFF grade leads all tackles this year.

Buffalo defensive coordinator Bobby Babich called out the defense following their lackluster performance in Week 14, saying it was a “conglomeration of people not doing their jobs at a high level.”

Babich did note that he has to be better, but it will be interesting to see how the defense responds in a tough environment at Ford Field.

Get out to a fast start

Getty Images

The Bills are 6-0 in home games this year, but just 4-3 on the road. And, it mostly boils down to the fact that they have put themselves in a hole early in away games. In five of the seven road games, the Bills fell behind early and had to claw back into the game. The only road games where they started fast were blowouts at the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks.

If the Bills can set the tone with some early stops on defense and scores on offense, it would be a huge momentum boost. Ford Field is a difficult environment to play in, and it would become much more difficult to play from behind.

Why Bills-Lions promises to be offense explosion in Week 15

Why Bills-Lions promises to be offense explosion in Week 15

When the Buffalo Bills travel to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions in Week 15 they will face the only team in the NFL that scores more points than them.

The Lions (12-1) average 32.1 points per game, leading the NFL. The Bills (10-3) average 30.5 points per game, second in the NFL. They are the only two teams in the league that average over 30 per game.

Though both teams are well-rounded in all phases, their explosive offenses are the reason they are both among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

But, they haven’t always produced these types of numbers. Both Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady made drastic differences recently for their franchises.

Johnson took over the reigns as OC in Detroit in 2022 and immediately enhanced the offensive output. The Lions improved from the 25th-most ppg in 2021 (19.1) to the 5th-most in 2022 (26.6). And in return, the team improved from a 3-13-1 record in 2021 to 9-8 in 2022.

In 2021, quarterback Jared Goff posted the 17-highest passer rating in the NFL (91.5) and with Johnson in 2022, he shot up to 7th-best in the NFL (99.3). It was his best passer rating since the 2018 season in which he went to the Super Bowl under the offensive-minded Sean McVay with the Rams.

Goff earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2022 and posted a career-low interception percentage (1.2%). Fast forward a couple of years and the combination of Goff and Johnson continues to get better. He is currently second in the league in passer rating (109.1).

Brady had had a similar effect on Josh Allen. From 2021 through 2023, Allen averaged a passer rating of 93.7, and so far in 2024, Allen has a rating of 101.9.

In 2024 (Brady’s first full year as OC), the Bills are averaging the second-most points per game in a season in Bills history. Their 30.5 ppg trails only the 2020 team (31.3 ppg).

Since Brady took over as the interim OC in Week 11 of 2023, the Bills are 16-4. But, both Johnson and Brady would tell you that they wouldn’t be as effective as coordinators if they didn’t have the special talent that they do on offense. And it’s not just the talent of the players they have but rather the versatility of their guys that can allow their offenses to win in many different ways.

In the 2024 offseason, Brady coined the phrase “everybody eats” as he was sharing his vision for the Bills offense. In July, he said, “We’re kind of in the process of trying to see what all of our guys can do, their different skill sets. I’m so excited about the group that we have, the tight ends and the receivers, because it’s so many different skill sets. You hope that the versatility allows it to play a little harder for defenses to defend.”

His vision has come true. The Bills have multiple weapons at running back, tight end, and receiver that can all hurt a defense in different ways. As for Johnson and the Lions, they are taking a similar approach due to their plethora of playmakers at the skill positions.

Following a Week 5 win over the Cowboys in which they scored 47 points, Johnson talked about the ways he can get creative as a playcaller and give a defense different looks due to the variety of talent he has to work with. Not only can he spread the ball around, but he can mix in trick plays, too.

“The well is deep,” Johnson said regarding his playbook. “We can run a million different types of plays. With that, I don’t like to run the same one twice.”

Over their last four games, the Lions have four pass-catchers averaging at least 35 receiving yards per game: Amon-Ra St. Brown (84.8 ypg); Jameson Williams (74 ypg); Tim Patrick (43 ypg); Sam LaPorta (36.3 ypg). And, they have two running backs averaging at least 60 rushing yards per game over that time: Jahmyr Gibbs (72.3 ypg); David Montgomery (62.8 ypg). Add in the fact that both Gibbs and Montgomery can hurt you in the passing game, and that St. Brown and Williams can take a jet sweep, and you can see why defenses have been in a bind all year against them.

As for the Bills, they have a strong possibility to get WR Keon Coleman and TE Dalton Kincaid back into the lineup after they have both missed time. They would join an offense that just scored 42 points last week without them, scoring six touchdowns and committing zero turnovers.

The Bills are looking to get the sour taste of last week’s loss to the Rams (44-42) out of their mouth. With Week 15 being another game in cozy dome between two high-powered offenses, this one may be a second-straight shootout for Bills.

Both teams still have a lot to play for, with the Bills chasing the one-seed in the AFC and the Lions trying to fend off an 11-2 Vikings team in the NFC North.

Causes for concern as the Bills face the Rams in Week 14

Causes for concern as the Bills face the Rams in Week 14

The Buffalo Bills will travel across the country to take on the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Week 14.

The Bills (10-2) and Rams (6-6) are both playing good football as of late. The Bills are riding a seven-game win streak while the Rams have won five of their last seven.

Even though Buffalo is favored to win the game, there are always a few things that make winning difficult each week. The Bills will need to be wary of them.

Here are three causes for concern for the Bills against the Rams in Week 14:

Matt Stafford is on a heater

Imagn Images

The Rams have recovered from their 1-4 start to the season in large part because quarterback Matt Stafford has been playing better as of late. The offense has bounced back in a big way.

Over the last six games, Stafford has thrown for 14 touchdowns while throwing just three interceptions. He’s averaging over 265 pass yards per game over that stretch.

Now, the Rams are back in the mix for the NFC West title and they are playing at home with a ton to prove. This is a team better than its 6-6 record.

Elite skill players to keep tabs on

USA TODAY Sports

Another major reason for the Los Angeles offense’s turnaround this year is that Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are now both healthy after missing a large portion of time at the beginning of the year.

Stafford now has one of the league’s best wide receiver tandems ready to roll and they have provided a big boost. Since Week 8, Stafford has the third-most completions of 10+ yards in the NFL.

It’s not just the elite weapons in the passing game that the Bills have to watch out for. Kyren Williams can get cooking in the running game as well. They don’t run it a whole lot, but he is more than capable of impacting a game. Over the past four outings, he has averaged over 5.3 yards per carry.

Sean McVay and Matt Stafford have a trio of high-level skill players that can hurt the Bills in a blink if they’re not careful.

Rams have their backs against the wall

Imagn Images

The Rams are remarkably still in the mix to win the NFC West after starting the year 1-4. Still, they have an uphill climb to make the playoffs. They currently have a 23% chance of making the postseason.

They still have three divisional games remaining, including a trip to San Francisco next week. If they want to make a run this year, stacking a win before their end-of-the-season NFC West gauntlet would be huge to have in their back pocket.

This is one of just three remaining home games for the Rams, and coach McVay will be trying to pull all the levers to give his team a chance at the postseason. The Bills are in a race of their own trying to reach the one-seed in the AFC, but they are nowhere near as desperate as the Rams to get a win at this point.

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Rams in Week 14

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Rams in Week 14

The Buffalo Bills will play the Los Angeles Rams on the road at SoFi Stadium in Week 14.

The Bills (10-2) are looking to build on a seven-game win streak, while the Rams (6-6) have won five of their last seven after starting 1-4.

Buffalo opened as 4.5-point favorites on the road. The two teams haven’t met since the season opener in 2022 when the Bills beat the Super Bowl-defending Rams, 31-10.

Even though the Bills are favored, the Rams are one of the hotter teams in the NFL and are in a competitive race for the NFC West crown.

Buffalo  will need to execute their game plan to pick up their eleventh win of the year.

With that, here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 14:

Make them stop the run

Getty Images

Last week, the Bills spammed the running game against the 49ers and it resulted in 220 rushing yards and 35 points on the board. It will be difficult to repeat that success again this week, but the Rams have shown they can be hurt on the ground.

Two weeks ago, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley did whatever he pleased against them. He ran for 255 yards and two scores on 26 carries. And last week, the Saints’ Alvin Kamara put up 112 rushing yards on 23 carries.

The Bills are at their best when they are a threat both on the ground and through the air. With this game being played in a dome (SoFi Stadium), many will be looking for Josh Allen to put up numbers in the passing game after only 148 pass yards in last week’s snow game. But if the Bills are wise, they won’t abandon the run and they’ll make the Rams have to defend in the trenches on defense.

Contain Rams pass rush

Imagn Images

Despite the loss of Aaron Donald, the young defenders on the defensive line for the Rams have done a solid job in keeping their pass rush competitive. They have four d-linemen with at least 4.5 sacks: Jared Verse (4.5), Kobie Turner (5), Byron Young (6), Braden Fiske (6).

More specifically, Verse has shown improvement this year. According to Pro Football Focus, he is the 12th-most productive pass-rushing edge defender with a pass-rush grade of 82.4.

The Bills haven’t allowed a sack in either of their last two games against the Chiefs and 49ers. That was a big reason they were able to put up 30+ points against both Super Bowl representatives from last year. If the Bills offensive line continues its high level of play, Allen could be in for a big day.

Limit explosives from McVay’s offense

Imagn Images

It’s no secret that the Rams offense has the potential to go toe-to-toe with anyone on any given Sunday. Led by offensive-minded head coach Sean McVay, quarterback Matt Stafford has a few premiere weapons to spread the ball around to.

Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp are one of the league’s best wide receiver duos, so the Bills’ secondary will have their hands full. The duo both found the field healthy together for the first time in Week 8 after missing much of the season.

Stafford has thrown for eight touchdowns on downfield passes (10+ yards) since Week 8, which is the third-most in the NFL in the span, and he has averaged 11.3 yards per attempt on those throws. The entire team has been lifted since Kupp and Nacua became healthy.

The running game was also effective for them last week as Kyren Williams ran for 104 yards and a touchdown on 6.9 yards per carry. The offense can beat you in many ways much like the Bills’ offense. It will be another test for Sean McDermott, Bobby Babich, and the Bills defense to limit their explosive plays and keep them in check.

Bills at Rams: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 14

Bills at Rams: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 14

The Buffalo Bills will travel across the country to face the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Week 14.

For this cross-conference battle between Sean McDermott’s Bills (10-2) and Sean McVay’s Rams (6-6), it will be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Rams contest:

CB Taron Johnson vs. WR Cooper Kupp

USA TODAY Sports

The battle in the slot will feature All-Pro caliber players who have been around the NFL for a while. Taron Johnson is in his eighth year and is coming off of his first-career All-Pro selection last year (second-team). Cooper Kupp is in his ninth year and has an All-Pro selection under his belt as well (first-team in 2021).

Kupp continues to see the majority of his snaps in the slot. According to Pro Football Focus, Kupp has seen 278 slot snaps and 151 wide snaps this year.

Johnson will have his hands full. Not only is Kupp still a reliable route runner and pass catcher, but he has the ultimate trust and chemistry with quarterback Matt Stafford. The two won a Super Bowl together in 2022 and connected for the go-ahead touchdown in that game. A few wins from either side of this matchup could make a big difference.

Bills offensive line vs. Rams defensive line

USA TODAY Sports

Both the Bills offensive line and the Rams defensive line have had outstanding seasons to this point. Both have outperformed their expectations this year.

Heading into Week 14, both the Bills O-line and Rams D-line rank as the sixth-best unit on their respective side of the ball according to PFF.

Los Angeles has posted the league’s best quarterback pressure rate (39.8%) according to Next Gen Stats. Buffalo, on the other hand, has allowed the league’s fewest sacks this year (13), including zero over their last two games.

Something has to give. The battle in the trenches when the Bills have the ball will be one of the better matchups around the NFL and will play a big role in the outcome of the game.

RB James Cook vs. Rams front-seven

USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images

If the Bills can get running back James Cook rolling on the ground like they did last week (107 yards on 7.6 yards per carry), then it will keep the Rams’ impressive pass rush honest. And, although the Rams can get after the quarterback, they have their holes in the run game.

They rank 21st in the NFL in defense rushing DVOA, while ranking 22nd in EPA/rush. On top of that, they allow the fifth-most yards after contact per rush (3.25), according to Next Gen Stats.

Buffalo and offensive coordinator Joe Brady have found a lot of success on the ground this year (4th in rush DVOA). If they can get going once again, it will be worrisome for Los Angeles.
