Ranking Big Ten football recruiting classes after national siging day

Here’s how the Big Ten recruiting rankings stack up after another national signing day.

Another recruiting cycle is in the books for Ohio State and its Big ten brethren as the 2022 national signing day has more or less come and gone.

There will probably be some additional pieces added to this class, and some attrition we don’t know about right now, but what we’ve got right now is pretty solid. The bulk of the classes were corraled during the early signing period back in mid-December, and now we’ve got a few more to see where things land across the landscape of the conference.

Ohio State has routinely been at the top of the recruiting rankings in the Big Ten when you look at the national recruiting services, but how did the Buckeyes fare for the 2022 class? Is it still tops in the Big Ten? If not, who took the crown? What other teams finished among the upper crust of the league?

Here is how the Big Ten football recruiting rankings shook out according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, along with some metrics for each program’s 2022 class.

Ranking 2022 Big Ten teams by average talent rating after the early signing period

How did Big Ten football programs rank in average talent rating per 2022 early signing period commit? Is Ohio State on top?

There are a few ways to look at which college football teams did the best in any given recruiting class, and that’s the same for the Ohio State football program. You can go by overall score, which is what most use. You can try to determine which programs fit the needs the best based on the current roster, or you can take a look at the average talent of each recruit.

It’s that last one that is often overlooked because of the size of a signing class. Take Ryan Day’s first class for instance. In 2019, Day only signed 17 total commitments for that recruiting cycle because it was never going to be a big one with what the Buckeyes had coming back. As result, it wasn’t a top class for OSU’s historical standards, just No. 14 overall in the country, and third in the Big Ten behind Michigan and Penn State. Those two programs signed 26 and 23 prospects respectively.

However, when looking at average star rating according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Ohio State was still one of the tops in the country, and THE top team in the Big Ten. That year, the Buckeyes had an average prospect rating of 91.87, ahead of Michigan (90.78), and Penn State (91.01), and were third in the country behind Alabama (94.38) and Georgia (93.32).

This year, Ohio State signed just 18 players through the early signing period, still tops in the Big Ten in total score, and No. 4 overall in the country, but where does that stack up in average talent rating per commitment in the Big Ten?

We’re here to rank each program from worst to first when it goes to looking solely at the average 247Sports talent rating for the 2022 recruiting class after all the early signing period shenanigans are pretty much done.

Top 10 Big Ten 247Sports composite recruiting classes over last 20 years

How dominant has Ohio State been when comparing its Big Ten counterparts in recruiting? Here are the top ten 247Sports Composite classes over the last 20 years.

Big Ten football has had ups and downs over the last couple of decades, but there has been no inconsistency at Ohio State. The Buckeyes are the only squad to win a national title twice in that time frame. No other team has really come close.

And it all starts with getting the players. Sure, there has to be a high level of development as well, but when you have more to work with at the beginning, it makes winning games and molding a championship team much easier.

To illustrate how dominant Ohio State has been over the last couple of decades in recruiting within the conference, we went back over the last 20 years to see which programs have brought in the top recruiting classes. We must keep in mind things are a lot different in 2021 versus measuring the classes back in 2001, but there’s still a very, very distinct divide between OSU and every other program in the conference.

Here is a look at the top 10 recruiting classes in the Big Ten over the last 20 years according to the 247Sports team composite rankings.

The Wisconsin Badgers added to their class of 2022 offer sheet yesterday by extending one to 6’4″ point guard Rowan Brumbaugh.

The Northfield, Massachusetts native is currently unranked in the 247Sports composite and is now the No. 7 player to be offered by the Badgers in the class, joining four-star PG Tre Holloman, four-star SG Jaden Schutt, four-star SF Camden Heide, four-star PF Isaac Traudt, unranked PF Braden Huff and four-star C Joe Hurlburt.

Greg Gard and his staff are looking to up their game on the recruiting trail by landing a four-star or few with the hope of improving upon their No. 32-ranked 2021 class that contains four three-star recruits.

Mel Tucker and the Michigan State football staff are dealing with some inclement conditions when it comes to recruiting the 2021 class. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic has really hurt the ability to recruit in person. Nonetheless, the Spartans have pulled in two impressive recruits this past weekend: three-star safety Jah’Von Grigsby and four-star running back Audric Estime.

The Spartans 2021 football class now ranks No. 54 in the nation according to 247Sports updated recruiting rankings. Also, MSU’s 2021 football recruiting class is the 12th-ranked class in the Big Ten.

Again, Tucker has brought in some solid 2021 recruits despite being hired late while facing a pandemic. I can’t wait to see what he does with even more time at his disposal.

Andrel Anthony is a 6-2, 175 pound receiver from Lansing, Michigan and has included Notre Dame in his most recent top four schools, which he released exactly a month ago.

Notre Dame currently has one wide receiver commitment in their 2021 recruiting class, four-star Lorenzo Styles of Pickerington, Ohio.

They’ll know if a second receiver joins that class in just over a week as the top ranked receiver in Michigan has announced when his commitment will be announced.

Andrel Anthony is a 6-2, 175 pound receiver from Lansing, Michigan and has included Notre Dame in his most recent top four schools, which he released exactly a month ago.

Now Anthony is nearing his decision as he today announced that he’ll be making his announcement on what is usually the MLB trade deadline, July 31.

An announcement about a future announcement.  Does anything scream “college football” nearly as much?

As for the kind of player Anthony is and what Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State or Penn State will be getting – he’s a roughly top-100 receiver in the class who is said to be a great route-runner and possesses great ball tracking skills.

He could also use to add more than a couple pounds of muscle and a little more speed as well.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire as we’ll have all of the information in regards to Anthony’s decision next week!
