Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Dylan Raiola went 19-of-27 passing for 238 yards and two touchdowns in Nebraska’s 40-7 victory over UTEP.

The Big Ten Conference named Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola the Freshman of the Week on Monday. Raiola went 19-of-27 last Saturday, throwing for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Nebraska was able to roll to a 40-7 victory over the UTEP Miners at Memorial Stadium. The win marked the program’s first opening-day victory since the 2019 season. The quarterback completed passes to 11 different targets, showing off his strong arm and playmaking ability.

Raiola is the first Nebraska football player to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Malcolm Hartzog Jr. in 2022. He is also the first offensive player to win the award since Wan’Dale Robinson in 2019.

The signal-caller will face a tough test against the Colorado Buffaloes this coming Saturday. Nebraska is looking for their first win over Colorado since 2010.

Raiola undoubtedly still has room to grow as a college quarterback. Nevertheless, this award is certainly a strong start to his collegiate career.

Brice Sensabaugh named to Big Ten award for fourth time this season

Another one for Brice Sensabaugh! #GoBucks

At this point, the Big Ten might as well name the award after him. For the fourth time this season, Ohio State freshman forward Brice Sensabaugh has been named the conference’s Freshman of the Week.

It was a week that saw the Buckeyes drop a close game at Nebraska, but follow that up it up with a bounce-back win over Iowa at home. Sensabaugh was especially impressive against the Hawkeyes, pouring in a career-high 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in a 93-77 victory.

For the week, the 6-foot, 6-inch, 23-pounder averaged 22.5 points while shooting 57 percent from the floor and 58 percent from long range. He recorded a double-double against the Cornhuskers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

According to a release from Ohio State, Sensabaugh becomes the first Buckeye freshman to lead the team in scoring in 10 consecutive games. His 17.5 points per game is second-best nationally among freshmen this season.

And while earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week four times in one season is impressive, it’s not the best we’ve seen from an OSU newcomer. D’Angelo Russel was recognized seven times during the 2014-2015 season.

Sensabaugh will lead Ohio State when it hits the court next at Illinois on Tuesday.

Malaki Branham once again named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Back-to-back weeks for Malaki Branham! #GoBucks

Someone is starting to figure things out.

For the second-straight week, Ohio State guard Malaki Branham has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. It comes on the tails of scoring 24-points in a very offensive 95-87 win over Northwestern at home on Sunday.

For Brahnam, the output and recognition come just as the freshman is starting to emerge as the team’s second-best and most consistent scoring option. In fact, with his recent run of success, Branham is now officially the second-leading scorer for OSU with 10.4 points per contest, behind E.J. Liddell who is averaging 20.1 points per game.

Over the last three games, Branham has poured in 35-points (at Nebraska), 13-points (at Indiana), and 24-points (vs. Northwestern).

If Ohio State has designs of making a run at a Big Ten title and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, it’ll need improved guard play and that seems to be exactly what it is getting from the Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary graduate.

Malaki Branham named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Malaki Branham is your Big Ten Freshman of the Week after an amazing performance on the road vs. Nebraska. #GoBucks

The potential was realized, at least for one game when freshman Malaki Branham helped lead Ohio State to an overtime win at Nebraska Sunday by dropping 35-points. The performance was notable because it allowed OSU to come back from a three-game layoff because of COVID-19 concerns with a victory. For his efforts, Branham was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week Monday.

Branham was 13-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. He also tied a season-high with six rebounds. The reigning Mr. Basketball of Ohio’s efforts were not only becoming of a freshman but sit up there as one of the best performances by an Ohio State basketball player in recent memory.

Consider the following thanks to a release from the OSU Department of Athletics.

  • The 35 points are the most by an OSU freshman in a Big Ten game and second only to Jared Sullinger who scored 40 vs. IUPUI as a freshman in 2010.
  • The 35 points also tie Keita Bates-Diop for the most by any OSU player in a Big Ten game since 2000.
  • Branham’s six three-pointers tie an OSU freshman record for the most in a single game. He entered the night just 5-of-15 combined from long range on the season.
  • His 13 field goals are tied for the second-most by an OSU freshman in a game in program history.
  • The 35 points are also tied for the second-most in a game by any freshman in the country this season.

With the victory, the Buckeyes improved their record to 9-2 and remained unbeaten in Big Ten play at 3-0. Ohio State next takes on Indiana in Bloomington on Thursday.

C.J. Stroud named Big Ten football Freshman of the Week again

Stroud does it again. Will any other team besides Ohio State take home the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week Award this season?

This is becoming a habit. After taking home the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in two of the first four weeks of the college football season (notwithstanding Week 0), Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has been recognized as the recipient of the honor again after his performance against Rutgers.

After sitting a week to rest an ailing shoulder, Stroud came out looking like a more confident, deliberate, and accurate quarterback with more zip on his passes. He finished the game early against Rutgers because of how out of hand the score was, but went 17-of-23 for 330 yards and five touchdowns in a little over two-quarters of play. He did not throw a pick for the first time this season as Ohio State went on to beat the Scarlet Knights 52-13.

A Buckeye has taken home the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award every week they have played in 2021. Stroud won it in Weeks 1 (Minnesota), 2 (Oregon), and now 5, TreVeyon Henderson was recognized in Week 3 (Tulsa), and true freshman quarterback Kyle McCord was honored in Week 4 after the game against Akron.

It just goes to show you how talented the youth are on this football team and how bright the future still is.

Kyle McCord named Big Ten football Freshman of the Week

The fourth-straight Big Ten football Freshman of the Week honor for Ohio State.

Let’s just go ahead and name the Big Ten football Freshman of the Week honor after Ohio State. For the fourth-straight week (every game OSU has played if you’re counting), a Buckeye was named honored with the award.

True Freshman Kyle McCord got the start in place of C.J. Stroud, who was resting a sore shoulder, and delivered more than well enough to be recognized by the league. The former five-star prospect out of St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia finished the game with 319 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13-of-18 completions vs. Akron.

On Saturday night, McCord became just the fourth true freshman quarterback ever to start at Ohio State. The 319 yards is the most for any OSU quarterback’s first start, eclipsing Dwayne Haskins’ 313 yards vs. Oregon State in 2018.

Ohio State and McCord now turn their eyes towards the game against Rutgers in Piscataway, NJ on Saturday. The Big Ten Network will televise the game at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Michigan State G Rocket Watts named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

MSU’s star freshman Rocket Watts has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after the Spartans 2-0 week.

[jwplayer sexTRsqJ]

In a week in which Michigan State knocked off Ohio State and Penn State on their way to securing a share of the Big Ten Regular Season Title, two Spartans were honored by the conference for their elite play. First, Cassius Winston was named the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Then, freshman phenom Rocket Watts was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his efforts.

Watts averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on the week and dazzled fans with his signature stepback threes. Watts has found a new level of consistency in his play over this run for the Spartans and he has been a huge part of their ability to jump back into the top 10 in the country.

Not only has Watts been an elite scorer and a great second-ball handler, but his superb defense has been a huge boost for a team that is missing Joshua Langford.
