Three hurdles for Texas to be back per ESPN Analyst

According to ESPN writer Bill Connelly, there are three obstacles ahead of the Longhorns in order to get back to elite status.

It has been a long-time joke in the eyes of many for the better part of the last decade. “Is Texas back?”

It has been asked after every big win by the Longhorns over the last several years. When they took down Notre Dame in Austin where it took double overtime to come out on top, the question was asked. When the Longhorns outlasted Oklahoma in a thrilling 2018 Red River Shootout, many begin to wonder if they’re finally back. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger even proclaimed it after defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the All-State Sugar Bowl.

ESPN staff writer Bill Connelly put together his list of three obstacles that the Longhorns need to overcome to in fact be back.

The coordinators must … coordinate, somehow

Well that is quite the bold strategy for the coordinators to in fact coordinate. One could understand the sentiment but that is an odd way of putting it. The Longhorns are in rarified air with having two new coordinators coming to town for the 2020 season and with the current climate of COVID-19, it will be increasingly difficult.

It was the right move for Tom Herman given the tremendous amount of pressure to win big and he needed to shake things up. Whenever football is once again back on, both Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash need to get their perspective units rolling and hopefully it will come quick because the clock is ticking.

Big 12 Commissioner concerned about upcoming season

The Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby is concerned about the upcoming season and when the magical start date is going to come.

In a very fluid situation as is the current climate regarding life, financials and yes sports it has been unprecedented territory. There isn’t much clarity as far as when we can return to some sense of normal life with the concerns surrounding COVID-19. Even the Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby is voicing his concern in his latest conference call.

“Virtually every program is highly reliant on football revenue,” he told ESPN. “We’re making lots of contingency plans, but if you don’t get the anticipated number of games in, you lose the donations, you lose the sponsorships, you lose the gate receipts and you lose the TV. It’s potentially very impactful.”

Bowlsby went on to comment more about the impact on the athletes and sports.

“We don’t know when somebody is going to tell us it’s going to be OK to go back to close contact,” he said. “I suspect that medical experts and scientists are going to be slow to give the green light on that. The magic start date is probably a mirage.

“It may be different in some high-density populations and areas than it is in more remote areas,” he said. “It could be certain parts of the country and not other parts of the country. I don’t think there’s just going to be a day when we turn it all on again. There has to be a reacclimation period because athletes aren’t training at the same level they had been accustomed to.”

Not to sound insensitive to the situation facing every American and everywhere around the globe, this does have a huge financial impact for everyone and especially universities. Bowlsby is right that they need to make contingency plans to try and withstand these times of zero movement. It isn’t just the sports that are having this hit, but the university themselves.

The conference has drastically reduced salaries, schools are closing their campuses, refunding room and board and going to online classes. It is fair to have concerns over the long-term impact during the pandemic and Bowlsby isn’t alone with his thoughts.

Texas Football: Denzel Okafor to remain in Austin

Texas Longhorns soon to be senior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor has pulled his name from the transfer portal.

Just two weeks ago Longhorns’ right tackle Denzel Okafor had placed his name in the transfer portal. With Okafor likely leaving, that meant that Texas and head coach Tom Herman would have some work to do in order to replace him. Okafor was likely to be in the mix for a starting spot going into his redshirt senior season in 2020.

With the recent news that Okafor had pulled his name, he hasn’t been the first to do so this offseason. Linebacker Juwan Mitchell also briefly put his name in the portal before pulling out. For Okafor, he has an opportunity to become a full-time starter. He has played in 36 games over his Longhorns career.

With the departures of both Zach Shackleford and Parker Braun, Okafor has an opportunity. Mostly viewed as an offensive tackle, he is likely getting a shot at both the inside and outside positions. With the current restrictions that don’t allow practices, it definitely does not help his chances at this point in time at getting a leg up on the competition.

The Lewisville, Texas native was a four-star prospect coming out of high school according to 247 composite rankings as the 12th best offensive guard in the country.
