Jets don’t extend tenders to 3 RFAs, including James Burgess

The Jets elected to extend tenders to restricted free agents LB James Burgess, CB Arthur Maulet and DB Bennett Jackson.

The Jets did not extend tenders to restricted free agents James Burgess, Arthur Maulet and Bennett Jackson, according to the New York Post’s Brian Costello.

All three defenders become unrestricted free agents and are free to sign with anyone. Burgess and Maulet were two players who stepped up amid team injuries and excelled in starting roles in 2019, while Jackson was primarily a depth piece.

After Avery Williamson tore his ACL, Burgess was brought in as a camp body who knew Gregg Williams’ defensive scheme from their days in Cleveland. Burgess forced to step-up after injuries to C.J. Mosley, Albert McClellan, Blake Cashman and Neville Hewitt decimated New York’s middle linebacker depth.

Burgess was dominant in the second half, recording 69 tackles and an interception in New York’s final eight games. He finished the season with 80 tackles, making a big contribution in the middle for Gang Green.

On Monday, ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that Maulet would not be tendered, but added that the Jets have interest in bringing him back at the right price.

Starting in six games, the corner played a significant role down the stretch in the Jets secondary. Maulet saw 331 defensive snaps in lieu of Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts, who both battled injuries throughout the season.

As for Jackson, the defensive back split his 2019 season between the Ravens and Jets. He didn’t make a major contribution but served as a depth piece when Jamal Adams went down with an ankle injury and played sparingly on special teams.

All three players can still be in the Jets’ future roster plans. Each is eligible to be signed by Gang Green as unrestricted free agents.

Jets S Jamal Adams won’t rush back from ankle injury

Jest safety Jamal Davis will likely be out on Sunday against the Dolphins with an ankle sprain.

Jets safety Jamal Adams will likely miss his first NFL game on Sunday against the Dolphins.

Adams suffered an ankle sprain last week early in the game against the Bengals but played through it. He was in a walking boot after the game. On Monday, an MRI revealed that Adams sprained his ankle and he is now week-to-week.

Now, Adams won’t put himself on the field until he feels he is fully ready.

“I’m not going to get out there until I’m myself,” Adams told reporters. “I don’t know when that is. We’re not going to put a timetable on it.”

Adam Gase said on Tuesday that it is not a high-ankle sprain, so it’s not as bad as it could’ve been. Given how much Adams moves around the line of scrimmage, though, he can’t afford to play on a bum ankle. The burst that Adams gets is one of the reasons why he is so explosive around the football.

Keep in mind that Adams is also eligible for a massive payday this offseason, so there’s no sense in him rushing back.

It’s been another amazing year for the third-year safety, as he leads the team in most defensive statistics. Adams is the team leader in tackles (64), sacks (6.5), tackles for loss (11.5), pass defenses (6) and forced fumbles (2).

With Adams likely down for Sunday, the Jets will turn to backup safety Blake Countess. They also claimed Bennett Jackson off waivers this week, so he could see some playing time as well.

Jets place C.J. Mosley on IR, add DB Bennett Jackson

The Jets effectively ended C.J. Mosley’s disappointing first season in green and white. He will undergo season-ending groin surgery.

After not being able to finish out the only two games he started this season, the Jets have placed linebacker C.J. Mosley on season-ending injured reserve.

Mosley injured his groin in the Jets’ season opener against the Bills and returned prematurely in Week 7 against the Patriots. He reaggravated his injury in the Jets’ 33-0 loss and did not see any the field again despite inclinations that he may return.

Mosley attempted to hold off surgery but was unable to avoid it. He will undergo season-ending surgery, as the Jets are no longer in the playoff picture following their loss in Cincinnati.

The Jets gave the former Ravens star a five-year, $85 million deal that included $51 million guaranteed in free agency.

He finished th eyear with just nine tackles, one fumble recovery, one quarterback hit, two passes defended and a pick-six in 108 snaps over two games.

To replace Mosley on the active roster, the Jets brought back DB Bennett Jackon, claiming him from the Ravens. The Jets need depth in the secondary with Jamal Adams (ankle), Brian Poole (concussion protocol) and Arthur Maulet (calf) all banged up.

Jackson was claimed by the Jets on Sept. 1 and was waived two weeks later. He then joined the team’s practice squad but was signed to the Ravens’ active roster on Oct. 15.

Irish in the NFL: Make A Bennett Jackson Movie Already

Bennett was back for camp with the Giants in 2015 but tore his ACL in their second pre-season game, missing the entire year.  The Giants would end up releasing him at the end of pre-season the following year.

You ever have a player in any sport you take a special fandom to for an odd reason?  We all do, that’s a silly question.

Here’s the tale of one of mine, a Notre Dame grad who is pretty much the NFL example of Rudy.

Do you remember Bennett Jackson, the former Notre Dame cornerback?

Jackson was a member of the Notre Dame football team from 2010-2013 and a starting cornerback on the 2012 team that wound up playing for the national championship game.  After an entirely random encounter and high-five with him after the Michigan game in 2012, I took a special-liking to the young man.

After his eligibility was up in 2013 he was drafted by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft and was signed to their practice squad that fall.

Bennett was back for camp with the Giants in 2015 but tore his ACL in their second pre-season game, missing the entire year.  The Giants would end up releasing him at the end of pre-season the following year.

Fast forward to 2018 and Jackson still hadn’t let that dream of playing in a regular season NFL game go and in January of ’18, he signed a reserve/future contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

Unfortunately injury again hit Jackson who was put on Injured Reserve on August 31 before being released a week later.

Yet he didn’t quit, instead fought to get back and re-signed with the Ravens practice squad that November.  Shortly after their season concluded the Ravens and Jackson then agreed to another reserve/future contract.

However again at the end of this past pre-season Jackson was waived by the Ravens before being claimed by the New York Jets a day later.  He was waived by the Jets on September 16 before having played in a regular season for the Jets, but did sign with their practice squad.

Finally on October 15 the Ravens signed Jackson to their active roster, the only way they could get him off the Jets practice squad.

Jackson played in his first NFL game five days later, playing 14 special teams plays and one defensive snap when the Ravens won at Seattle, 30-16.

He’d play three more games for the Ravens, getting a career-high 22 defensive snaps played in their November 11 rout of Cincinnati.

Jackson was however waived Monday by Baltimore but not out of work long as Tuesday he again was signed by the Jets.

Props to him for never giving up on his dream regardless of how many times he was hit with injuries or cut.  Whether he takes another snap in an NFL regular season game or not his story is already Hollywood-worthy.

Irish in the NFL: Bennett Jackson waived by Ravens

Former Notre Dame Irish safety Bennett Jackson was waived by the Baltimore Ravens after the 28-year-old made his NFL debut this year.

The Baltimore Ravens waived former Notre Dame safety Bennett Jackson on Monday. He is now a free agent.

An immediate roster move was not announced, but the Ravens are expected to activate safety Brynden Trawick from the injured reserve to take his place.

Jackson has primarily been a special teamer in his time with the Ravens, which began in Week 7. He was active in four of the team’s six games since then, recording two combined tackles.

It was Jackson’s first NFL action, despite being drafted in the sixth round way back in 2014 by the New York Giants. A plethora of time on the practice squad and on the injured reserve prevented Jackson from actually playing until this year, at age 28.

Jackson starred at Notre Dame from 2010-2013, recording six interceptions and 158 combined tackles in the secondary for the Irish.

Now, he’ll have to work hard to find another team willing to take on a 28-year-old journeyman – but at least he was able to realize his goal of playing in an NFL game with Baltimore.

Ravens waive S Bennett Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens freed up a roster spot by waiving safety Bennett Jackson, potentially making room for Brynden Trawick to return from IR

The Baltimore Ravens sit at 10-2 and atop the AFC playoff picture. But they’re not satisfied with their roster as it stands right now. So as they enter Week 14 and prepare to take on the Buffalo Bills, they’re altering their 53-man roster a bit.

According to the team’s Twitter account, Baltimore waived safety Bennett Jackson.

While there’s no fellow roster decision to immediately fill Jackson’s spot, it’s likely to make room for safety Brynden Trawick, who is eligible to return from injured reserve this week.

Jackson has primarily been used as depth this season after the Ravens saw injuries to safeties Tony Jefferson and DeShon Elliott as well as injuries to cornerbacks Tavon Young and Jimmy Smith. Jackson was signed to the roster for Week 7 but has been active for just four of the six games he’s been with the team, playing mostly on special teams.

Trawick suffered an elbow injury in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. While Baltimore kept him on the 53-man roster, subsequent defensive lapses saw the Ravens need the roster space to make some additions in Week 5, sending Trawick to injured reserve after two weeks.

Irish in the NFL: Boykin Shines Again in LA Coliseum

Boykin caught 77 passes and 11 touchdowns at Notre Dame but I’ll always remember this block before anything else he did in blue and gold.

With the Baltimore Ravens playing on and owning Monday Night Football this week it meant for a chance for the nation to get a closeup of MVP-frontrunner, Lamar Jackson.  Before we get to the Notre Dame connection to this game let me just say that his meteoric rise to super-stardom makes me incredibly happy to be wrong about what he might be able to do in the NFL.

He’s not only the most exciting player going this season but he’s also got to be the favorite to win the MVP award after doing what he did to the Patriots a couple weeks ago on Sunday Night Football and again for his five touchdown passes and complete domination of the Rams on Monday Night Football.

Now to the Notre Dame side of this game:

Miles Boykin must have a thing for the Los Angeles Coliseum.  In last year’s regular season finale you may remember what he did to spring Tony Jones, Jr. to the end zone to clinch a 12-0 regular season.

Well, Boykin was at it again Monday night as the Ravens embarrassed the reigning NFC Champs on their home field, 45-6.

It may have been out of hand at this point but its remarkable to me how Boykin’s highlight catch tonight occurs in almost the exact same spot as his block, nearly exactly a year to the day, that sent the Fighting Irish to their first College Football Playoff appearance. (Shoutout to Austin Hough of The Goshen News for pointing that out to me on Twitter).

I also wouldn’t be doing my proper work if I didn’t send mad-praise the way of Ronnie Stanley who has been an absolute monster for the Ravens and is a huge reason their downright nasty rushing attack works as well as it does.

The Ravens now sit at 9-2 on the season and atop the AFC North standings.  Along with Boykin and Stanley, former Notre Dame corner back Bennett Jackson, Jr. is also currently on the Ravens roster.
