Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses teams denying Travis Kelce: ‘He’s going to get his catches’

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses teams denying Travis Kelce: ‘He’s going to get his catches’ | @EdEastonJr

The regular season is only two weeks old, and the Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated while getting contributions from various players on offense.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters following Sunday’s victory, addressing the lack of production from Travis Kelce due to defensive schemes in the first two games.

“They’re doing a great job of just kind of having two people for him pretty much the entire game,” said Mahomes. “That’s why you’ve seen guys like Rashee (Rice) and (Xavier) Worthy – I mean, if you look at the first touchdown, I’m actually looking at Trav (Travis Kelce), and the backside safety goes all the way across the field to help guard Travis, and then you throw the ball down the sideline to Rashee, and that’s kind of what

they’ve been doing.”

Kelce was held to one catch for five yards on Sunday and faced constant double teams and attention from several defenders. In the first half, Mahomes was intercepted, trying to target Kelce, who continues to be heavily game-planned against by defensive coordinators after two games.

“Obviously, we’ve played two opponents that we’ve played a lot, so they have a plan on how they’re going to account for Travis,” said Mahomes. “As the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards. The leader that he is – what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated, and that’s what you need out of your great players.”

Kelce has four receptions for 39 yards through two weeks, significantly below his usual production over the years. As the season progresses, head coach Andy Reid will likely draw up unique ways to give the Pro Bowler more opportunities.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals reason for benching rookie starter during game vs. Bengals

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals reason for benching rookie Kingsley Suamataia during game vs. Cincinnati #Bengals | @EdEastonJr

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs’ last-second victory over the Cincinnati Bengals kept the team undefeated in the young season. However, some question marks have emerged from the victory, specifically on the offensive line.

During his Sunday press conference, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed his decision to sit rookie starting left tackle Kingsley Suamataia late in the game.

“Kingsley, he’s going against arguably one of the best defensive ends in the league. It would be a great experience that he could put away and learn from, but I ended up taking him out of the game,” said Reid. “Sometimes you got to take a step back to take a step forward.“

Bengals veteran pass rusher Trey Hendrickson dominated the one-on-one matchup with Suamataia. Reid is optimistic that the experience will help the former BYU stand out in the long term.

“Listen, it’s a great learning experience; sometimes, if you get beat a couple of different times and you’re a young guy, you haven’t quite figured out the answers to the test there on how to fix it,” said Reid. “Your coach talks to you, and you’ve got to settle down. That happens, so you go back, and you learn from it. Wanya will do the same. He did a nice job jumping in there, with the exception of penalties.”

Morris committed a penalty trying to block Hendrickson on the last drive, so it’s not certain that either player will start against the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday night.

“We’ll see how it goes,” said Reid. “I’m gonna go back and look at the tape, and I’ll talk with Coach (Andy) Heck, and we’ll go from there.”

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy can earn a spot in the NFL record books vs. Bengals

Kansas City #Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy can earn a spot in the NFL record books vs. Cincinnati Bengals | @EdEastonJr

Although the Kansas City Chiefs are only entering the second week of the new season, players are already approaching career milestones.

Last week, Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy became the third wide receiver in league history to record both a rushing and a receiving touchdown in his first career game. He finished with a 21-yard rushing touchdown, two catches for 47 yards, and a receiving touchdown in Kansas City’s Week 1 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

The former Texas standout with multiple touchdowns in today’s game against the Chiefs’ longtime AFC rival Bengals can become the fifth player with multiple touchdowns in his first two career games since 1970. Worthy would be joining Billy Sims in 1980, Marion Butts in 1989, Jahvid Best in 2010, and Kareem Hunt in 2017.

Hunt, the most recent rookie to accomplish this rare achievement, did it as a member of the Chiefs. He finished that season as the NFL rushing leader at 1,327 yards and earned a Pro Bowl selection. After the unfortunate news of ‘Hollywood’ Brown needing surgery, Worthy will continue to see more targets in the offense.

Bengals defender comments on his dislike for Chiefs before Week 2 clash

One Bengals player didn’t hold back when talking about the rivalry with the Chiefs.

The Cincinnati Bengals are going to see some familiar faces in Week 2 in the Kansas City Chiefs when they head to Arrowhead for what has become somewhat of a rivalry over the past few seasons.

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, who is in his third season with the Bengals now, made his thoughts on Kansas City clear when he was asked on Wednesday about the upcoming matchup.

“I don’t like them,” Taylor-Britt said. “I don’t think I like a lot of teams, but we see them a lot. It didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to the last time. But playing those guys is always exciting.”

“I don’t shut up. I don’t shut up,” Taylor-Britt added when asked if he thinks there will be a lot of talking between the two teams during the game.

The Bengals are coming off of a bad loss to the New England Patriots in Cincinnati in Week 1, and to immediately have to come back against the back-to-back Super Bowl champions will certainly be a tough task, but the two teams have always found a way to make their games interesting.

Cincinnati took the first two of many matchups, beating the Chiefs late in the 2021-22 regular season by a field goal, and doing the same later that same month when Kansas City visited the Bengals for the AFC Championship game, which took the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1989.

Then the Bengals won again in the 2022-23 regular season, again by three points, but since then Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have got the better of them, winning the AFC Championship two years ago and beating the Jake Browning-led team last season by one possession.

But the game in Kansas City this weekend will certainly be one to pay attention to.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is on pace to break multiple records vs. Bengals

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is on pace to break multiple records vs. Cincinnati #Bengals | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is beginning to own the records and accomplishments. He became the franchise leader in passing yards during the Week 1 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, and that appears to be the first of many to fall this season.

The Chiefs reigning Super Bowl MVP will only be making his 98th career start on Sunday. With a win against Cincinnati, Mahomes will tie Tom Brady and Pro Football Hall of Famer Roger Staubach at 76 career wins. All three would be tied for most wins by a quarterback in his first 100 career starts.

Mahomes is also likely to surpass Matthew Stafford for the most completions by a quarterback in his first 100 career starts with five. Three touchdown passes will put Mahomes on target to overtake Aaron Rodgers’ 222 touchdown passes for the most by a quarterback in his first 100 career starts.

Mahomes’ destined Hall of Fame career could see many more records fall his way before he decides to hang up the cleats. He won’t personally dwell on these accolades without a victory over their long-time AFC rival Bengals this Sunday.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones analyzes upcoming matchup with Bengals QB Joe Burrow

Kansas City #Chiefs DT Chris Jones analyzes upcoming matchup with Cincinnati #Bengals QB Joe Burrow | @EdEastonJr

The rivalry between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals continues to be a must-see matchup regardless of when the game occurs during the season.

Chris Jones has faced off with Joe Burrow and the Bengals for several years, and he’s identified much about their offensive style. He spoke about it with the media after Thursday’s practice.

“Joe Burrow is Joe Burrow, man, (a) great quarterback,” said Jones. “(He) can make all the tough throws and is resilient, and he has a lot of special guys around him. So, it’s a tough team.”

The Bengals struggled in their stunning loss to the New England Patriots last week. Burrow’s first game back from injury was shaky, finishing with 164 yards without a touchdown pass and a 55.8 quarterback rating. Jones is still ready for a determined Burrow returning to Arrowhead Stadium.

“Joe Burrow’s a heck of a quarterback when throwing the ball and making all the tough throws, but I think his running ability isn’t as noticeable as everybody sees. He can run the ball exceptionally well. I think he’s a step-up guy.” said Jones. “It is different from Lamar (Jackson), where Lamar can run any A gap, B gap, or C gap and get a stay in a place like that. But I think Joe Burrow’s running doesn’t get as capitalized as this throwing does, but he’s an effective runner when he has the space. So we definitely got to be cognizant of our pass, rushing lanes.”

The Chiefs defeated the Bengals on New Year’s Eve last season without Burrow available due to injury.

Ja’Marr Chase’s contract standoff summed up well by Cowboys superstar

One Cowboys star has some words of advice on the whole Ja’Marr Chase contract situation with the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase ended up playing in Week 1 after there were doubts that he would since he held out of training camp.

Another receiver who held out this preseason, Dallas Cowboys CeeDee Lamb – who signed a four-year, $136 million extension before the season began – went on Kay Adams’ show, “Up & Adams,” where he revealed his thoughts on his counterpart’s situation.

“I feel like he’s playing it right. He’s doing it right. All it’s going to take is one big game for him to show his worth,” Lamb said. “Obviously, Week 1 is tough for us because we’ve been holding out, but once we get acclimated and our bodies start getting back into the grind of things, it’s going to pop off. I have no doubt that he’s going to have a great year this year.”

Though they were in different situations before the season, Chase with two years left on his deal, and Lamb headed into the final year of his before he signed the extension, Lamb still had some advice for the Bengals pass catcher.

“I know for him it’s a very difficult situation mentally,” Lamb said. “Obviously, physically, he’s been playing ball his whole life, so I’m not really worried about him being ready. But mentally, just be locked in. Stay true to yourself and always just stay true to what you believe in… Keep working, keep grinding bro. I can’t tell him anything that he doesn’t know already. You’re going to get what you’re worth.”

Chase’s contract situation rolls on, and likely will for a while now that he has officially decided to play without a new contract. But if it doesn’t get figured out before next season, it could be a completely different story for the Bengals.

Chase finished Week 1 with six catches for 62 yards in what was an underwhelming performance for the entire Bengals squad at home against the New England Patriots.

Bengals rookie punter might have ended roster battle with historic Week 1

Do the Bengals finally have their punter of the future?

While Week 1 didn’t go at all how the Cincinnati Bengals wanted it to, their poor offensive performance did allow one newcomer to show off.

Rookie punter Ryan Rehkow set a record in his NFL debut with an average of 64.5 yards per punt in the loss to the New England Patriots, beating the previous record of 63.6 yards that was set in November of last season by Las Vegas Raiders punter A.J. Cole. Rehkow punted four times for 258 yards.

Rehkow signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of BYU and soon after signed with the Bengals where he would win the starting job. On his very first try in the league when Cincinnati’s second drive came to a stall, he booted the football from where he was standing on his own 5-yard line and bounced it into the opposite end zone, an 80-yard punt that stands as a new franchise record.

Rehkow came into the season still in a battle with second-year punter Brad Robbins, who the Bengals spent a 2023 sixth-round draft pick on, but he injured his hip in training camp and remains on the IR.

With his record-setting Week 1 performance, Rehkow might have ended the battle for the starting punter job when Robbins is able to return.

The Bengals certainly hope he doesn’t need to punt as much as he had to in the first week of the season, but if he continues anywhere near the performance he started his career with, Cincinnati might have found its new punter.
