Jaguars vs. Bengals recap: Everything goes wrong for Jacksonville

It was a nightmarish night for the Jaguars on Monday Night Football.

It was supposed to be an easy night against a double-digit underdog, but the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals proved to be a nightmare.

After a strong start to the game for the Jaguars with an opening drive touchdown and two defensive stops, the Bengals offense caught fire. In his second career start, Jake Browning had a terrific night, throwing only five incompletions on 37 pass attempts.

The Jaguars clawed back from an early second half deficit, but a bad night turned into a nightmare one due to injuries. Jacksonville lost Christian Kirk to a groin injury on the first offensive snap, but even worse, the team lost Trevor Lawrence to an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

While Jacksonville managed to drive into field goal range for a game-tying kick in the final 30 seconds of regulation, the offense couldn’t do it again in overtime. Instead it was Cincinnati that got the yards it needed to set up a 48-yarder for Evan McPherson that ended the game.

Here’s how Jacksonville’s costly Week 13 loss went down:

Travis Etienne, Tyson Campbell active vs. Bengals in Week 13

The Jaguars listed three of their four questionable players as active.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed four players as questionable Saturday, but three of them, including running back Travis Etienne Jr., are officially active for Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The only player missing the Week 13 game due to injury is tight end Brenton Strange, who suffered a foot injury in practice.

The team elevated tight end Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, from the practice squad Monday.

Another notable player absent from the list of inactives is defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton. After missing the first couple months of the season due to a bacterial infection, Hamilton returned in Week 8. However, he played just two games before he was a healthy scratch in the last two weeks.

Now Hamilton is set to make his return to the lineup and the team sat down Angelo Blackson, making room for plenty of snaps.

For the Bengals, there were no big surprises.

On Monday, the Bengals placed starting cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt.

NFL picks: Experts predict Jaguars vs. Bengals in Week 13

Not many experts think the Jake Browning-led Bengals have much of a chance against the Jaguars.

The majority of experts picked the Houston Texans to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. They were proven wrong by a Jaguars team that scraped out a 24-21 road win to take solid control of the AFC South.

This week, the doubters are few and far between.

That’s largely because the Jaguars have won nine of their last 10 to surge through the AFC standings. With a win Monday, they’d take control of the No. 1 seed in the conference.

It’s also because the Cincinnati Bengals will hit the field at EverBank Stadium without Joe Burrow under center. The team’s star quarterback suffered a season-ending wrist injury, forcing the Bengals to turn to Jake Browning the rest of the year.

Cincinnati has lost three straight and not many experts think the team bounces back Monday. Here’s what experts predict will happen in the Jaguars’ primetime matchup:

How to watch Jaguars vs. Bengals: TV channel, kickoff time, stream

Here’s how to tune in when the Jaguars play on Monday Night Football for the first time in 12 years.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to be on Monday Night Football for the first time in 12 years when they host the Cincinnati Bengals in a Week 13 contest.

When the NFL’s 2023 schedule was released in May, the early December battle of the big cats looked to be one of the toughest tests of the year for the Jaguars. But now that it has arrived, Jacksonville is a significant favorite against the Bengals.

That’s mostly due to a season-ending injury suffered by Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow that has left the team with no option but to hand the reins to Jake Browning. Last week, the fifth-year pro made his first career start, but couldn’t lead the Bengals to many points in a 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Here’s how to tune in from home Monday when the Jaguars attempt to make life tough for Browning and the Bengals:

Jaguars list 4 players as questionable for Monday vs Bengals

Travis Etienne Jr and Tyson Campbell are questionable for Monday night, although both are expected to play.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed Tyson Campbell, Travis Etienne Jr., Luke Farrell, and Brenton Strange as questionable for a Week 13 game on Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals.

While the official status is up in the air for all four players, it appears unlikely that Etienne or Campbell will sit out Monday.

Earlier in the day Saturday, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson told reporters that Etienne will play Monday, despite a ribs injury that limited him in all three practices this week. Later, Campbell said in the locker room that he expects to return from a hamstring injury that kept him out four of the last games.

For the Bengals, the significant injury news is that starting cornerback, Cam Taylor-Britt, suffered an ankle injury in practice that will keep him out Monday.

Not listed on the report for the Bengals is wide receiver Tee Higgins, who missed the last three weeks with hamstring and ankle injuries. While he was limited in practice Thursday, Higgins practiced fully Friday and Saturday ahead of his return to action.

Tyson Campbell ‘glad to be back,’ expects to play Monday vs. Bengals

Tyson Campbell says his hamstring injury is behind him and he’s excited to play Monday against the Bengals.

Head coach Doug Pederson said the Jacksonville Jaguars will wait a little longer to decide if Tyson Campbell plays Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. The third-year cornerback doesn’t have much doubt, though.

“I’m feeling good, glad to be back and help my team get a win,” Campbell said Saturday. “First Monday Night Football game, it’s going to be a fun atmosphere to play in, so I’m pretty excited.”

Campbell, 23, missed two games with a hamstring injury, and then sat out another two games after re-injuring his hamstring in his first game back. On Saturday, he said that he didn’t feel like he rushed back too early for the Jaguars’ Week 10 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“I felt good coming into that game and God put me back, sat me down for a couple more weeks,” Campbell said. “I’m feeling good, that’s behind me, I’m feeling stronger.”

Fortunately for Jacksonville and Campbell, he was afforded the luxury of patiently getting back to 100 percent because Montaric “Buster” Brown played well as the starter in Campbell’s place.

“Buster’s an amazing corner,” Campbell said. “The team didn’t miss a beat. He stepped up to the stage and made plays like we know he’s capable of doing, so I wasn’t surprised.”

Campbell faces a tough challenge Monday when he’ll line up across from the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Cincinnati will be without starting quarterback Joe Burrow, though, and has been forced to turn to Jake Browning to lead the way.

5 keys to a Jaguars win vs. the Bengals in Week 13

What do the Jaguars need to do to get a win in their long overdue return to Monday Night Football?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won seven of their last eight to surge into the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC after starting the year with a disappointing 1-2 September.

Similarly, the Cincinnati Bengals turned around a 1-3 start to the year with four straight wins. The two teams’ paths diverged after that streak, though. While Jacksonville kept winning, the Bengals have now lost three straight and lost quarterback Joe Burrow to a season-ending injury.

Instead of a clash of AFC powerhouses on Monday Night Football, the Jaguars will be a heavy favorite against the Jake Browning-led Bengals.

What does Jacksonville need to do to take care of business and get another tally in the win column. These five keys are a good place to start:

Jaguars add Brenton Strange to injury report Friday

Brenton Strange was one of four Jaguars players limited in practice Friday.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie tight end Brenton Strange was a new addition to the injury report Friday with a foot issue.

Strange was one of four players limited, along with running back Travis Etienne Jr., Tyson Campbell, and Luke Farrell.

While starting tight end Evan Engram is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL at the position, the addition of Strange to the injury report raises eyebrows because Farrell is also dealing with an injury. Strange and Farrell primarily see the field as blockers, so the team could be limited in that regard if one or both players are unable to play Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, is the only tight end on the practice squad who could be elevated to the active roster if the team is in need of another player at the position.

For the Bengals, all eyes are on Tee Higgins who is working to come back from injuries that kept him out the last three weeks.

Higgins told reporters Thursday that he plans to play Monday and his full practice Friday seems to indicate he’s on track.

5 Bengals players who could cause the Jaguars problems in Week 13

Will the Jaguars be able to shut down the Bengals’ talented receiving corps?

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals have been headed in opposite directions, as of late.

The Jaguars have moved past early hiccups and are establishing themselves as a top team in the AFC. The Bengals, however, looked like one of the best teams for a stretch, but are now spiraling.

Without Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow, Cincinnati has turned to backup Jake Browning to turn the season back around. While the Bengals seem unlikely to make the playoffs, they’re still a team with difference makers on both sides of the field.

Here are five Bengals players who could cause problems for the Jaguars in Week 13:

Travis Etienne Jr., 2 other Jaguars limited in Thursday practice

Travis Etienne Jr. was one of three Jaguars players limited Thursday.

Running back Travis Etienne Jr. was one of three Jacksonville Jaguars players limited in practice Thursday due to a ribs injury he suffered in the team’s Week 12 win against the Houston Texans.

“I’m feeling better, I’m just working day in and day out to get better so I can get back Monday and be my best self,” Etienne said after practice. “If I can go, I’m gonna go. If I can’t, we got great backs behind me that are gonna do their jobs. That’s what I love about this team: everyone’s a great professional and we’re all in this together to win the game and they’ll be ready to go if I’m not.”

Along with Etienne, cornerback Tyson Campbell and tight end Luke Farrell were limited Thursday.

Campbell has missed four of the last five games due to his nagging hamstring injury. On Thursday, he worked to the side with trainers at the beginning of practice before joining his position group.

The Cincinnati Bengals listed a dozen players on their Thursday injury report, although four were due to rest and four practiced fully.

Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins missed the last three weeks due to his injuries.
