Three other injured players who were sidelined on Sunday — cornerback Art Green (concussion) and offensive linemen Nick Gargiulo (undisclosed) and Ben Powers (ribs) — were also back on the field.

Throckmorton was the only active-roster player to not participate. Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) also remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Broncos injuries: 3 players return to practice

There’s good news on the injury front for the Broncos this week as three players returned to practice.

There’s mixed news on the injury front for the Denver Broncos going into the second week of preseason.

Broncos guard Ben Powers (ribs) had X-rays come back negative on Monday, but he did not practice Wednesday. Tight end Lucas Krull (toe) was also held out of practice.

Cornerback Art Green (head) has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol and did not practice, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Meanwhile, Denver pass rusher Nik Bonitto (back) returned to practice after sitting out the team’s preseason opener. Safety Brandon Jones (hamstring) and linebacker Justin Strnad (groin) also returned to practice.

Cornerback Levi Wallace (hamstring) remains sidelined. Meanwhile, linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Broncos injuries: MRI and X-ray updates after preseason opener

X-rays came back negative for Ben Powers’ ribs. Broncos TE Lucas Krull (toe) and CB Art Green (head) got MRIs. We’ll know more tomorrow.

Three Denver Broncos players who were banged up in the team’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday underwent testing on Monday.

Broncos guard Ben Powers had an X-ray on his ribs after he collided with Samaje Perine while attempting to tackle a Colts player on an interception return on Sunday. That MRI came back negative, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Even bruised ribs can be a big hindrance, though, so we’ll be tracking Powers’ status this week.

Denver tight end Lucas Krull had an MRI on his toe that was injured on the Indianapolis turf. “There’s hope he will be no more than day to day,” according to Klis. It’s unclear what exactly the injury is, but coach Sean Payton did not seem to think it was serious after Sunday’s game.

Broncos cornerback Art Green left Sunday’s game after being evaluated for a possible concussion. Green had an MRI on his “head area” on Monday, according to Klis. The team has not confirmed if Green suffered a concussion.

We’ll have a better idea of the statuses of those three players when Denver returns to the practice field and Payton meets the media on Wednesday.

Broncos roster series: No. 74, OL Ben Powers

Entering his second season with the Broncos, Ben Powers will look to improve after allowing four sacks last fall.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year guard Ben Powers, No. 74.

Before the Broncos: Powers (6-4, 310 pounds) entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. He spent his rookie season as a reserve player before emerging as a fill-in starter for seven games in 2020. Powers started 12 games in 2021 and then emerged as a full-time starter in 2022. He was penalized once in 2022 and did not allow any sacks, according to Pro Football Focus.

Broncos tenure: Following the best season of his career, Powers hit free agency and signed a four-year, $52 million contract with Denver. He allowed four sacks and was penalized three times in 2023, according to PFF.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Powers is set to start at left guard for the Broncos again this fall. Barring injury, Powers is in no danger of losing his starting role ahead of the 2024 season.

Broncos restructure contracts of Zach Allen, Ben Powers to create cap space

After restructuring the contracts of Ben Powers and Zach Allen, the Broncos have about $46.35 million in available salary cap space.

Entering Day 2 of the NFL’s free agency negotiating window, the Denver Broncos continue to create salary cap space through simple restructures.

The latest moves: Denver restructured the contracts of defensive lineman Zach Allen and guard Ben Powers, ESPN’s Field Yates first reported Tuesday. The two transactions will save just shy of $20 million in salary cap space this season.

Allen and Powers both had their base salaries ($14.25 million) converted into signing bonuses. Their salaries are lowered to $1.125 million and the signing bonuses will be prorated over the remainder of their contracts, lowering their 2024 cap numbers.

Allen now has three void years at the end of his deal (2026-2028) and Powers has two void years (2027-2028). The Broncos get instant relief now, but the team is kicking the cap hits down the road. Allen is now scheduled to have a cap hit of $12.225 million in 2026 when his contract voids and Powers will have a cap charge of $4.35 million when his deal voids in 2027.

The NFL’s salary cap is expected to increase every year, so those void years shouldn’t be too difficult for Denver to handle, but it’s worth mentioning that the Broncos are saving cap space in 2024 at the expensive of future years.

At the time of publication, OverTheCap.com estimates that Denver now has about $46.35 million worth of cap space in 2024.
