Bill Barnwell floats idea of Rams trading two 1st-rounders for CB Pat Surtain II

In Bill Barnwell’s trade-filled mock draft, he floats the idea of the Rams trading two first-rounders for Broncos CB Pat Surtain II

If there’s a team that could swing a big trade for a proven veteran before or during the NFL draft this year, it’s the Los Angeles Rams. They’ve done it before, landing players such as Brandin Cooks, Jalen Ramsey and Matthew Stafford for first-round picks during Sean McVay’s tenure.

There are no indications they’ll make such a blockbuster move in the next week, but nothing can ever be ruled out with Les Snead and McVay.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has one potential target for the Rams to consider, however. That player is Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II. In Barnwell’s annual mock draft where he comes up with a trade for each team in Round 1, he pitched the idea of the Rams acquiring Surtain in a massive deal with the Broncos.

Broncos get: 1-19, 2025 first-round pick, 3-99
Rams get: CB Pat Surtain, 2026 fifth-round pick

Barnwell isn’t suggesting the Rams will make such a move and he has no inside information, but he’s simply sharing a trade that “might make sense,” as he put it.

There aren’t many players who are simultaneously playing at that level and for a team that’s rebuilding.

The Broncos might be the lone exception, which is why a Surtain deal would be plausible. The Rams already showed they were willing to spend this much for a complete cornerback when they acquired Ramsey in 2019, and Surtain might be the former Jags star’s successor as the league’s best player at the position. Surtain is excellent in coverage on the outside and in the slot, capable of shadowing the opposing team’s top wide receiver, and is physical enough to hold his own as a tackler. He just turned 24 on Sunday and will make a combined $23.3 million over the next two years with his fifth-year option, giving L.A. plenty of runway as it negotiates a new extension with him.

If the Rams were going to make such a significant move at cornerback this offseason, it likely would’ve come before they signed both Darious Williams and Tre’Davious White. While neither cornerback should prevent the Rams from acquiring a young cornerback, particularly one of Surtain’s caliber, those signings do make it less likely for a trade like this one to happen.

There are no indications the Broncos want to trade Surtain, who’s their best player on the roster, but as Barnwell notes, they’re rebuilding and could use as many assets as they can get – especially if they want to move up for a quarterback in this year’s draft.

As unlikely as this trade is to happen, it’s fun to think about the Rams acquiring yet another young star, even if it rids fans of seeing them make a first-round pick for another two years.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain ranked 32nd on PFF’s Top 101 Players list

PFF has released its list of the top 101 players in the NFL and Broncos CB Pat Surtain is ranked No. 32.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain has made the Pro Football Focus list of their 101 best players from the 2022 NFL season. Pro Football Focus uses its cutting-edge data to track a player’s impact, and Surtain’s play landed him at No. 32 on the list. PFF’s Sam Monson spoke on Surtain’s placement on the list, highlighting Surtain’s ability to lock down his opponents.

“Surtain is one of the game’s smoothest and most in-control cornerbacks, Monson wrote. “With Denver’s offense struggling, pressure was always on the defense to lock down opponents, and Surtain consistently excelled at that task. Only Sauce Gardner had a higher PFF coverage grade this season.”

Surtain’s play landed him above other star cornerbacks, such as Jalen Ramsey, Stephon Gilmore, and Patrick Peterson. He would finish the season with ten passes defended and two interceptions, allowing just over 58% of completions thrown his way. Congrats to Surtain on this tremendous honor for the 2022 season.

Trevon Diggs uses facts to defend ‘Alabama is DBU’

Though many other programs try to claim it, there can only be one DBU.

Former Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs is known for interceptions and making headlines for his play on the field. Now, he’s in the news for supporting the Crimson Tide.

Diggs, who played at Alabama from 2016-2020, was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He joined a handful of other standout Crimson Tide defensive backs in the NFL, and has welcomed in several others since then.

Though other programs like LSU or Georgia may try to claim the title of ‘DBU,’ Diggs argues that Alabama is the premier program in developing NFL-ready defensive backs.

Diggs responded to a Tweet by Pro Football Focus, which asked fans which cornerback listed was CB1 in the NFL. Three of the seven on the list are former members of the Crimson Tide.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and former players now in the NFL.

Patrick Surtain wishes he had gotten opportunity to intercept Tom Brady

Tom Brady’s career ended before he got to play a game against Pat Surtain.

The events that occurred this week have made it one to remember for NFL fans. The Denver Broncos landed the most coveted coach on the coaching carousel in Sean Payton, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady called it quits for good.

Brady played quarterback in the NFL for 20 years, winning seven Super Bowls and three NFL MVP awards. Due to his age, younger players have revered playing and competing against Brady. Denver’s very own Patrick Surtain is one of those players, congratulating Brady on retirement but also stating how he wished he could have intercepted a pass for keeps.

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson also congratulated Brady on an accomplished career via Twitter.

Denver didn’t get to play Tampa Bay during Surtain’s two seasons with the franchise. Still, if the scheduling allowed this year, a matchup between the young cornerback and the veteran quarterback would have been entertaining. However, Brady has elected to ride off into the sunset. Congratulations to Brady on a successful career.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain named to PFWA’s All-NFL team

Pat Surtain was named a first-team All-Pro by three different sources, and he was elected a Pro Bowl starter by players, coaches and fans.

Denver Broncos CB Pat Surtain was recently named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-NFL team for the 2022 NFL season.

It’s yet another recognition for Surtain, who was also named a first-team All-Pro both by the Associated Press and in a first-ever Players vote. Surtain was also elected as a Pro Bowl starter by players, coaches and fans.

Surtain is steadily gaining a reputation for being one of the NFL’s best young defensive players, living up to his first-round billing from the 2021 NFL draft. For the 2022 NFL season, Surtain started every game and finished with 60 tackles, two interceptions, and ten pass deflections.

Surtain’s play parlayed the Broncos into a top-five pass defense and scoring defense in 2022. It’s safe to say Denver will view Surtain as a cornerstone for the franchise moving forward.

At one point, Surtain was ranked as the highest-graded cornerback in the league, according to Pro Football Focus. Surtain would finish the season second behind New York Jets rookie Sauce Gardner, but it will not diminish the season he put together. Congratulations to Surtain on the tremendous honor, as more awards will come.

Former Alabama CB Pat Surtain II named as Demaryius Thomas MVP Award recipient

Former Alabama cornerback Pat Surtain II is set to receive the Demaryius Thomas MVP Award from the Denver Broncos.

The Denver Broncos announced via Twitter that former Alabama cornerback Pat Surtain II was the recipient of the Demaryius Thomas MVP Award. This award is given annually to the player that best exhibits Thomas’ impact both on and off the field.

Thomas played wide receiver for the Broncos from 2010 to 2018. He was instrumental in the community as well as on the field. On Dec. 9, 2021, Thomas was discovered as being unconscious inside his Roswell, Georgia residence. He was later pronounced deceased at the age of 33.

His memory is commemorated by the organization through this award. It is merely an honor for any player to receive this particular award. This prestigious award honors Surtain II and the type of teammate he is. His impact shows in a multitude of ways within the Broncos’ organization.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Surtain II’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Broncos G Dalton Risner and CB Pat Surtain II named recipients of team awards

Well-deserved recognition for Pat Surtain and Dalton Risner.

Broncos guard Dalton Risner and cornerback Pat Surtain II were recently named recipients of the 16th annual Darrent Williams Good Guy Award and the Demaryius Thomas Team MVP Award, respectively. Team media presented the awards this past Thursday.

The Darrent Williams Good Guy Award is named after former Broncos cornerback Darren Williams, who passed away at age 24 on January 1st, 2007. The media votes to give the award to the Bronco who best showcases Williams’ character.

“Like many of the state’s natives who have played for the Broncos before him, Dalton is often sought out by media outlets from across the state on a variety of topics in addition to the usual requests from those around the team each day,” said ESPN senior writer and former national president of the PFWA Jeff Legwold.

The Demaryius Thomas Team MVP Award is named after Broncos’ former wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who passed away on December 9th, 2021. The Broncos player who showcases excellence on and off the field will get awarded moving forward.

“Pat Surtain is a fitting winner of an award named for Demaryius,” Legwold said. “Surtain’s quiet professionalism and consistent on-field excellence each week in a difficult year made him a landslide winner.”

Congrats to both Risner and Surtain on their team awards.

WATCH: Top plays from Pat Surtain II’s rookie season

Check out all the best highlights from cornerback Pat Surtain II’s impressive rookie campaign for the Denver Broncos

Heading into the 2021 NFL draft, many expected the Denver Broncos to target a quarterback at the No. 9 overall pick. Detractors sent plenty of criticism their way when they passed on Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, but after watching Pat Surtain II’s rookie season, it’s safe to say they nailed the pick.

The son of a Pro Bowl corner by the same name, Surtain made an immediate impact for the Broncos, proving himself to be every bit the playmaker he was at Alabama. Surtain picked off four passes, returning one 70 yards for a touchdown, and registered 14 pass breakups.

Relive Surtain’s impressive rookie season with all of his best plays from 2021:

Patrick Surtain Sr. joins Dolphins’ coaching staff

Patrick Surtain’s son plays cornerback for the Broncos. Denver will face the Dolphins in Miami in 2023.

Patrick Surtain Sr., the father of Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, will join the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff as an assistant coach, according to a report from Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 (via Dolphins Wire).

Surtain, 45, will presumably be the team’s assistant defensive backs coach. He spent the first seven years of his career in Miami after being selected by the Dolphins in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft out of Southern Miss.

The elder Surtain was a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro during his 11-year career, totaling 37 interceptions and 105 pass breakups. Surtain has been a head football coach at the high school level since 2016.

Surtain’s son was selected by the Broncos in the first round of last year’s NFL draft out of Alabama. The younger Surtain earned Pro Bowl first-alternate honors as a rookie in 2021 after breaking up 14 passes and totaling four interceptions, including a 70-yard pick-six.

Miami is not on Denver’s list of opponents in 2022, but the Broncos are scheduled to face the Dolphins on the road in 2023.

Pat Surtain II gets picks on back-to-back drives, including 70-yard TD

Denver Broncos first-round pick Pat Surtain II picked off Justin Herbert twice in a row, including a 70-yard pick-six

When the Denver Broncos spent the No. 9 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft on Alabama cornerback Pat Surtain II, instead of a quarterback, there were many who thought they would eventually regret their decision.

If that regret is ever to come, it won’t be anytime soon, after the performance Surtain had in Sunday’s big win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Surtain picked off Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on back-to-back drives, finishing each possession in an end zone.

The first pick ended a potential scoring drive for the Chargers in the end zone, while the second turned into a 70-yard touchdown the other way.

Surtain is making his Pro Bowler dad proud, for sure.
