Report: 49ers to re-sign OL Ben Garland

Ben Garland’s return stays in line with 49ers’ continuity theme in free agency.

The 49ers have made continuity a key component of their offseason moves, and they took another step toward that Wednesday when they agreed to a one-year deal with reserve offensive lineman Ben Garland. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported the signing first.

Garland wound up playing a key role on the offensive line last year after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. He can play multiple spots on the offensive line and stepped in at center when Weston Richburg went down with a knee injury in Week 14. Garland started the final 3 games and all three playoff games.

Center depth is vital considering Garland played through a bad injury in 2018, and then got hurt again last season. Teams will be required to suit up eight offensive linemen this year under the new CBA, so having multiple options up front will be essential.

Garland joins Shon Coleman among versatile offensive linemen the 49ers have re-signed in the offseason. They’ll also have Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill going into the season as the favorites to land reserve offensive line spots on the 53-man roster,  though that could change depending on how the team operates in the draft in April.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: NFC West Edition

Chargers Wire lists one pending free agent on each team in the NFC West that the Los Angeles Chargers could target.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to enter free agency with the most salary cap available since Tom Telesco took over as general manager in 2013.

Even though the franchise has some in-house players that will need to get paid, there’s a great chance that Telesco and company will be aggressive in signing other soon-to-be free agents to bolster an already talented roster, with the hopes of making a quick turnaround after finishing 5-11 in 2019.

With that being said, we are going to list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A. Next up is the NFC West.

Arizona Cardinals – G Max Garcia

The Chargers need to find starters along the offensive line, but they could benefit from adding quality depth in case of injuries, which has been the case in recent seasons.

Garcia was a fourth-round selection by the Broncos in 2015, where he spent the first four seasons of his career before finding a new home in the Cardinals last offseason.

2016 and 2017 marked Garcia’s best campaigns, starting every single game at left guard. He’s had some injuries throughout his career, but at 28, he still has plenty of juice in him and he would be able to supply depth with starting experience, which shouldn’t cost much to acquire him.

San Francisco 49ers – IOL Ben Garland

Garland was San Francisco’s starting center, but he has experience at both guard spots, offering some versatility. This season, Garland logged 227 of his 235 snaps at center. He allowed only one sack, four pressures and committed one lone penalty.

Seattle Seahawks – OT George Fant

Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky in 2016, Fant has started 24 of 46 career games. This past season, Fant was Seattle’s top backup offensive lineman, while also playing multiple positions and serving as a hybrid tight end. Fant has voiced that he believes he’s capable of being a starter rather than playing a reserve role. With that Chargers desperately needing to find a plug-and-play right tackle, Fant would be able to fill that void.

Los Angeles Rams – LB Corey Littleton

It’s not a glaring need to address, but the Chargers need to continue to get younger at the linebacker position. The future with Thomas Davis and Denzel Perryman also remains to be seen as the two could be cap casualties this offseason. Littleton finished last season as Pro Football Focus’ eighth-highest graded linebacker out of 119 players, racking up 45 stops and missing only one tackle all season. Littlelon is only going to be turning 27, so there’s plenty of good years ahead of him. Drue Tranquill, Kyzir White and Littleton would make out to be a nice trio for years to come.

4 centers the Jets should target in free agency

Jets Wire takes a look at four centers the Jets should target in free agency this offseason.

To say the Jets got next to nothing out of their centers in 2019 would be an understatement.

Ryan Kalil was a massive disappointment after coming out of retirement to join the team in August. Once he landed on season-ending injured reserve, Jonotthan Harrison took over and things did not get much better.

New York missed out on two top-notch free agent centers last offseason in Matt Paradis and Mitch Morse. Don’t expect Gang Green to miss on a top free agent center again this offseason, as first-year general manager Joe Douglas is placing a heavy emphasis on improving the offensive line.

Which centers could the Jets potentially target in free agency? Let’s take a look.

Connor McGovern

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

McGovern did an excellent job taking over for Paradis in 2019, giving the Broncos another reliable player at the position following the veteran’s departure in free agency.

A former fifth-round pick in 2016, McGovern is only 26 and has a lot of good football ahead of him. He also has plenty of experience and positional versatility, as he was Denver’s starting right guard before shifting over to center. He should be at the top of New York’s wish list at the position come March.

6 Bills storylines to watch for during Super Bowl LIV

Six Buffalo Bills related Super Bowl topics to follow during Super Bowl LIV.

There’s always a  Buffalo connection, right?

When the Chiefs and 49ers square off on Sunday evening in Super Bowl LIV, there’s a couple of Bills-related things to keep in mind.

Here are six Bills storylines to follow during the Big Game:

Kansas City Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy. Credit: Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Will LeSean McCoy play?

The Bills cut running back LeSean McCoy at the end of training camp. Most were surprised because the Bills backed him and his playing abilities until the very end. McCoy sings the praises of Bills Mafia, loving the fans that once rooted him on, but because of that backing only to be dumped, McCoy said this week that he wished the Bills’ front office were more honest with him.

But once things were all said and done with Buffalo, McCoy, a free agent, quickly signed with the Chiefs. Many pegged McCoy as a guy who would be a difference maker. Instead, he’s been anything but for KC. McCoy was healthy all season, but only played in 13 games, rushing for 465 yards with four rushing scores.

McCoy’s been inactive in several games this year, including down the stretch. He hasn’t had a carry since Week 15. In the Chiefs’ first playoff game, he was active, but didn’t see a touch. In the AFC title game vs. the Titans, he was inactive. So the question is simple. Does Shady suit up?

7 players in the Super Bowl the Bills could target in free agency

7 players from the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV that Buffalo Bills could target in free agency.

Super Bowl LIV could be the crowning achievement for the careers of many players on the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

But it also could be the final game some players suit up for their respective teams. In the modern day NFL with free agency spending going up and up, players move often.

Could any of them make their way to the Bills during free agency?

Here are seven pending free agents suiting up in Super Bowl LIV that the Bills could have interest in:

Kansas City Chiefs

CB Bashaud Breeland

Bashaud Breeland has had an interesting NFL career. He had a strong first four seasons with the Redskins and inked a three-year contract with the Panthers in free agency. However, he cut his foot during a trip to the Dominican Republic, causing his contract with Carolina to be voided.

With that in mind, the Bills run a similar defense to Carolina’s from that year with Sean McDermott having come from there. So could Breeland be a fit in Buffalo? He did have two interceptions and eight passes defended last year, but his Pro Football Focus marks… aren’t grade. The football analytics outlet graded him the 99th best cornerback in the NFL this past season.

In addition, he’s a vet, and the Bills have had a thing for signing vets (EJ Gaines, Kevin Johnson, Vontae Davis) to suit up in their No.2 corner role.

4 pending free agents in Super Bowl LIV the Chargers could consider signing

There are four pending free agents in Super Bowl LIV that the Los Angeles Chargers could consider signing.

The biggest game of the year is just days away, as the San Francisco 49ers are set to clash with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

While many around the world are gathering around to watch the contest for entertainment purposes, teams across the league are using this as a part of their evaluation process for the offseason.

Each team will have a slew of soon-to-be free agents that could draw their attention. With that, here are four players that the Los Angeles Chargers should have their eyes on:

WR Demarcus Robinson, Chiefs

Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams held the positional group down this past season, but there was hardly any production outside of those two, which means that adding a third wideout is an absolute must this offseason.

Robinson would be the perfect addition because he can stretch the field to open things up. He flourishes as a deep ball and after the catch threat, winning with his straight-line speed and creating slivers of separation with his athleticism and route rhythm to give his quarterback a manageable window.

Overshadowed by Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and rookie Mecole Hardman, Robinson still managed to rack up a career-high 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns during the 2019 regular season.

6 players in the Super Bowl the Jets should target in free agency

Emmanuel Sanders and Demarcus Robinson are among players the Jets should target that will be playing in Super Bowl 54 down in Miami, Fla.

All eyes will be on the Super Bowl on Sunday, and that should include those belonging to members of the Jets front office.

Team officials should be glued to the game, as there are several players playing in Miami that are set to hit the open market in March. The best two teams in the NFL are strapped with talent and it would be foolish for the Jets to not want to model their franchise like the Chiefs and 49ers have.

With that said, let’s take a look at six Super Bowl participants that the Jets should have their eyes on come free agency.

49ers: WR Emmanuel Sanders

(Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports)

While Emmanuel Sanders will be 33 years old this March, he proved his worth in San Francisco, making a significant impact down the stretch for the 49ers passing attack.

The Jets are lacking a true threat on the outside and Sanders has shown no indication that his production is going to slow down. While New York would like to have Robby Anderson back, Sanders would be the complement that would continually allow Gang Green’s true homerun threat to take the top off of defenses.

New York will have to get creative in its search for Sam Darnold’s No. 1 wide receiver. The 49ers not only gave Sanders a lifeline after his best days were behind him in Denver, but he also recorded 36 receptions for 502 yards and three touchdowns in 10 regular-season games.

Although the Jets may not have the cap flexibility to extend Anderson and ink Sanders to a lucrative deal, Sanders provides some veteran experience that the position group would be lacking with Demaryius Thomas and Quincy Enunwa unlikely to return.

Several ex-Broncos are Super Bowl-bound with 49ers

49ers general manager John Lynch, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and center Ben Garland all played for the Broncos.

The 49ers advanced to Super Bowl LIV after defeating the Packers in the NFC title game on Sunday. They wouldn’t have gotten there without the help of several former Broncos.

San Francisco’s general manager, John Lynch, played safety in Denver from 2004-2007, earning Pro Bowl nods all four years he played with the Broncos. Lynch is now a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The 49ers’ head coach, Kyle Shanahan, grew up on Denver’s sideline as a ball boy. The son of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, Kyle will always be connected to Denver.

San Francisco wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders played five and a half years with the Broncos before being traded to the 49ers last October. He earned two Pro Bowl nods during his time in Denver and won Super Bowl 50. The trade that sent Sanders from the Broncos to the 49ers worked out well for all parties involved.

San Francisco center Ben Garland spent the first four years of his career with the Broncos, though only one year was spent on Denver’s active roster. After playing for the Air Force Falcons, Garland spent two years on the Broncos’ reserve/military list while he fulfilled his two-year military commitment.

Those aren’t the only 49ers coaches and players with connections to the Broncos. The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala posted a graphic showing San Francisco’s connections to Colorado:

The 49ers will face Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 on Fox.

NFL’s conference title games will feature several former Broncos

Broncos fans will recognize several former Denver players and coaches during the AFC and NFC championship games this weekend.

The Broncos did not reach the playoffs this year but the team will be well-represented by former coaches and players in the NFL’s conference championship games this weekend.

49ers center Ben Garland and Emmanuel Sanders both played in Denver before landing in San Francisco. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is the son of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. Defensive backs/passing game coordinator Joe Woods coached in Denver from 2015-2018.

Wes Welker, who was a key member of the Broncos’ record-breaking offense in 2013, now serves as San Francisco’s wide receivers coach.

In Green Bay, the Packers have three offensive linemen who spent time in Denver: Billy Turner, Jared Veldheer and John Leglue.

The Titans have four former Broncos on their roster: punter Brett Kern, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, linebacker Wesley Woodyard and cornerback Tramaine Brock. Kern earned first-team All-Pro honors and the third Pro Bowl selection of his career this season.

The Titans will take on the Chiefs in the AFC title game on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1:05 p.m. MT on CBS. The 49ers will face the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at 4:40 p.m. MT on Fox.

These 6 49ers can help lead offensive turnaround vs. Rams

The 49ers need a big showing from these 6 players if they’re going to bounce back on offense vs. the Rams.

The 49ers in Week 15 sputtered badly on offense in a 29-22 loss to the Falcons. Now they’re looking to bounce back in a tough divisional game that’ll play a huge role in San Francisco’s bid for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Chances are they won’t win Saturday, or any game, if they don’t play better when they have the football. Here are six 49ers who’ll have to shine if they’re going to get back in the win column:

RB Tevin Coleman

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers are going to need Coleman playing at a high level if they’re going to get their rushing attack rolling again. Coleman’s inability to get anything going on the ground the last half of the season dramatically impacts San Francisco’s offense. He’s a good dual-threat back who becomes much less effective when he’s not a threat to run. He had 45 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown against the Rams the last time they played, and while he won’t get 18 carries again, getting some consistently positive runs would be a good sign from the veteran RB.
