Donovan Mitchell had an honest explanation for Dillon Brooks’ low blow: ‘I’ve been busting his [expletive] for years’

Well, now this all makes perfect sense

The Memphis Grizzlies, man. Drama is just following them all over the place so far this season. Well, to be honest, it’s following Dillon Brooks, in particular.

First, it was the near dust-up with Shannon Sharpe a few weeks ago. They got into a spat that felt like it could’ve spilled onto the court at any minute, which was pretty ridiculous.

Now, Brooks is in the middle of a beef with Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell has good reason to be mad, too — it was Brooks that started things this time.

He delivered a punch to Mitchell’s groin during the Grizzlies’ matchup with the Cavs. It was completely out of nowhere and for no reason. Brooks should almost certainly be suspended for this.

So why’d he do it? We don’t have a concrete answer, really. Donovan Mitchell had a pretty good one himself, though.

“Him and I have had our personal battles for years. Quite frankly, I’ve been busting his ass for years…The one game he does an alright job on me, he decides to do something like that. There’s no place for that in the game. You’ve got to protect yourself at the end of the day.”

WHEW that is spicy. “Quite frankly?” Nah, man. Mitchell didn’t hold anything back there. As the Grizzlies say, he wanted all the smoke.

Fans absolutely loved this.

Stephen A. Smith said his feud with Skip Bayless is ‘nothing more than a misunderstanding’

Stephen A. Smith said he didn’t “lie about a damn thing” with Skip Bayless and First Take.

Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless beefing all these years later after making magic on First Take was certainly not on my 2022 bingo card.

But, alas. It happened. There was some animosity between the two former co-hosts that seemingly came out of nowhere.

It all started with Smith jumping on JJ Reddick’s The Old Man and the Three podcast and explaining how his career took off on First Take and how the show’s ratings skyrocketed through the roof when he began making permanent appearances along with Skip Bayless.

Bayless clearly took that as Smith saying he carried the show himself to the success it has today without acknowledging the role he played in it.

But that wasn’t really what happened at all. Smith was only explaining the fact that the show continued its success after he jumped on to partner with Bayless. It wasn’t meant to be a slight.

A few hours after Bayless dropped a response video on his podcast, Stephen A. came back with a statement on Twitter to properly explain what he meant.

He made clear that he did not lie about “a damn thing” but also said the whole situation is a big misunderstanding.

“Skip Bayless is my brother. I will always love this man and I will always be grateful. No matter how far I continue to clime, I have him to thank. My comments about the state of First Take at that time is what I was told. It certainly wasn’t meant to slight my brother.”

What’s more, though, is he seems to be disappointed Bayless doesn’t know that there are no hard feelings here from Smith already.

“The sad part about that portion of this is that he appears to not know that…despite my consistent commentary over the yeras regarding how much he means to me.”

You absolutely hate to see it. Clearly, this is Smith making an overture to try and squash this thing before it becomes something bigger than it is.

Hopefully, it works. If not, we’ll just get more Kevin Durant tweets. Which, ya know, honestly? That’s not so bad, either.

The Wizards can’t make the playoffs but it feels like they won the NBA Finals after beating Spencer Dinwiddie and the Mavericks

This is one of the greatest nights in Wizards history

Yo, man. Being a Wizards fan is absolutely miserable more often than not. This team can take you down to the lowest of lows. Trust me, I know.

But sometimes there are highs! Sometimes. And when they come? Boy, do they hit hard.

That’s why Wizards Twitter is collectively on cloud 9 right now after the team absolutely smashed Spencer Dinwiddie and the Dallas Mavericks by 32 points on Friday night.

Now, look. For most of y’all? This game is meaningless But for Wizards fans? Nah, this was the most important game of the season. Is that sad? Sure. But it’s true!

Let me give y’all the skinny. The Wizards signed Spencer Dinwiddie to a 3-year, $54 million deal last offseason. He came to D.C. and it looked like the Monstars stole buddy’s talent. Like, he wasn’t good! At all! It was baffling, honestly.

Get this: In his last 10 games with the Wizards, he averaged 8.3 points, 6 assists and 5.1 rebounds on 26% shooting from the floor. TWENTY. SIX. Like, how? In what world is this possible?

At this point that just is what it is. It’s water under the bridge. He wasn’t good, the team traded him because he wasn’t good and now everyone can just collectively move on. Sweet.

But then, after the trade, he just looked like a completely new version of himself! How do you go from shooting 26% from the floor to hitting game-winners, dog? Somebody make it make sense?

Y’all know that meme where the wrestler Kevin Nash is in the wheelchair and then he just gets up and starts whooping everybody? Yeah, that’s the vibe here.

That wasn’t all, though. Then he started taking shots at the Wizards. As a matter of fact, he’s STILL taking shots at the Wizards — even after the Mavericks’ loss where he had a Wizards-esque performance with just 8 points.

“I said what I said about the organization. I know that they’ve since made comments about their own locker room that kind of validated what I’ve said about the situation.”

Yeah, buddy. Hold that L. He continues to talk about the Wizards’ locker room situation — which was admittedly terrible, by the way. But he’s not taking accountability for his own role in this and that’s the problem.

Buddy disappeared quicker than some Good Hope carryout wings with Mumbo sauce on the side. That’s a D.C. reference most of y’all won’t get but just know they go fast

And this, folks, is exactly why Wizards fans were so thrilled that the Mavericks lost.

So what if they can’t make the playoffs? Who cares if another win made their draft position a little worse? This was the best win of the season and it wasn’t because the score was so lopsided. This was a classic revenge game. They just packed Dinwiddie up and shipped him out.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope knows the vibes.

That’s what I’m talkin’ bout, dog. That’s what type of time Wizards Twitter was on. Fans were thrilled with this.

Drake just leaked Kanye West’s ‘Life of the Party’ diss track and people are so confused

This is hip hop in 2021.

The beef between Kanye West and Drake just begins to get more and more confusing by the day.

These two hip-hop powerhouses have been throwing shots at each other over the last few years since Pusha T first reignited his beef with Drake back in 2018.

Naturally, with the two of them releasing albums within the same week of one another, there were almost certainly more shots between the two of them coming.

Drake threw plenty of them at West on Certified Lover Boy with tracks like “7 AM on Bridle Path” and “No Friends in the Industry.”

But it seems Kanye actually left his biggest shot at Drake off of his album, Donda.

On a track called “Life of the Party” featuring Andre 3000, West absolutely takes it to Drake and a few other folks he, apparently, has a little problem with.

The best part? We only know this track exists because, well, Drake leaked it himself.

WHEW BOY, y’all. We got a whole mess here.

Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300: The best or worst NASCAR race name?

Yes, that’s really the name of the NASCAR Xfinity Series season opener.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Both. The answer to that question has to be both, right?

Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series season-opener is officially named the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300. Negative environmental impacts of beef aside, the race name is hilarious, goofy and overly punctuated, but, of course, that’s presumably what the race sponsor wanted it to be named.

But try saying that out loud with a straight face. “The Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300.” It’s comical.

However, it’s challenging to gauge exactly where it would fall on a list of similarly absurd NASCAR race names.

It’s not quite as painfully awkward as some race names, like the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen or the My Bariatric Solutions 300. Anything with with a URL in it — such as the 1000Bulbs.com 500 or the Visitmyrtlebeach.com 300 — is a hard pass.

Names with “presented by” tacked on at the end are just annoying, like the American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen. Even if it’s for a good cause — like the Active Pest Control 200 benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta — it’s a mouthful, and it seems like people will automatically opt not to say anything after the numeral noting the race length.

To be fair, the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300 only has two periods in it, when other race names are more punctuated, like the Axalta Faster. Tougher. Brighter. 200.

And of course, perhaps nothing will top the 2018 Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was called the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard Powered by Florida Georgia Line. Come on. People still called it the Brickyard 400 anyway.

As for the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300, we’ll put this one in the so-bad-it’s-actually-good category.

And, Daytona weather permitting, the Xfinity season opener is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. ET on FS1.

Davante Adams had to be escorted from the Rams’ sideline after jawing pregame with Jalen Ramsey

Adams and Ramsey have been getting into it all week ahead of the big playoff matchup.

All week in the lead up to the Packers – Rams divisional round game, people were fired up for the matchup between arguably the best wide receiver in the game and the best cornerback in the game — the Packers’ Davante Adams and the Rams’ Jalen Ramsey, respectively.

That showdown got a head start in the game when the two of them immediately started chirping at each other when they ran out on the field … well before the game started. During warmups, it got to the point where Adams actually followed Ramsey over to the Rams’ sideline and continued to chirp at him, until someone actually came over and walked him away.

My favorite part of all of this is the Rams #6, the punter Johnny Hekker, who stood there watching this all go down, like, “huh.”

At the start of the game at least, Adams has had by far the better of this matchup. By midway through the second quarter, Adams had already scored a touchdown and caught four passes.

Charles Barkley’s ongoing feud with Draymond Green finally appears to be over

This is good.

Draymond Green and Charles Barkley’s beef appears to be squashed. Or, at the very least, they set it aside for television. Either way, over the last few days the two have really been getting along.

It’s no secret that before this, Barkley and Green didn’t appear to like each other very much at all. They’ve taken some subtle and some non-so-subtle shots at each other over the last few months.

The two have been feuding for years now, since Chuck said he wanted to punch Green in the face in 2018.  They squashed everything at one point, but it just kept coming back up over the years.

Now, though, things seem to be cordial between the two — at least for now, anyway. Green was a guest on NBA on TNT on Friday night and the two got along just fine.

They spoke about the feud and even made jokes.

There was a moment where things got a bit shaky, but it ended up being fine.

It wasn’t just on NBA on TNT, either. Before that, on The Steamroom with Ernie Johnson and Barkley, the two got along extremely well.

The two have been working together on various shows for a couple of weeks now, and it was hard to tell how it’d go given their past. But everything seems to be going swell so far.

Their beef was entertaining, but it’s great to see these two finally getting along — even if it’s just for the sake of content.

Paul Pierce says LeBron James and the Miami Heat underachieved

Paul Pierce’s LeBron James hate tour continues.

Paul Pierce’s LeBron James hate tour is just the gift that keeps on giving, y’all.

Earlier this week, Pierce said that James wasn’t a top five player ever in NBA history which, uh, alright. I guess? I’m not sure how one doesn’t consider eight straight trips to the NBA Finals and three championships including one against a 73-9 team a top 5 resume, but whatever.

He wasn’t done, though. Nope. In fact, he’s doubling down in discounting James’ last decade in the NBA. In his latest appearance on ESPN’s NBA Countdown show, Pierce said that James and the Miami Heat underachieved during his stint with the team after going .500 in the Finals over four years.

“Let’s be honest. When we saw that LeBron was going to Miami with D Wade and Chris Bosh, did you not think they would run the table? It was like, that team, nobody can beat them. They should’ve been 1-4, they skated with 2-4 but they probably should’ve won 3 out of 4.”

At this point, you kind of just have to tip your cap to his willingness to stick to the bit. He’s leaning into it.

Of course, it makes more sense when you realize that Pierce doesn’t actually like James and that it stems from him actually spitting at the Cavs bench.

Pierce admitted to that incident, too, by the way.

Ah, the 2008 Celtics, y’all. May they continue to troll us forever and ever.

Charles Barkley and Draymond Green’s beef is getting old

They really need to squash this.

The Charles Barkley and Draymond Green’s beef is getting a bit stale at this point.

These two have feuded for years since Barkley said he wanted to punch Green in the face. Of course, Green has fired back on a few occasions. They even squashed the beef at one point. But this season? It’s come back with a vengeance. Especially since, you know, the Warriors suck.

On the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Green was asked about the feud between the two and where it stems from. He responded by saying Barkley was jealous of the success that he’s had as a basketball player.

How did Barkley respond? In the pettiest way possible, of course. He called him the “worst member of the boyband who doesn’t realize he’s standing next to Timberlake.” Word, Chuck. Word.

A good beef makes for amazing content and pretty funny moments. And, for a while, this beef was good. Extremely good.

But it’s getting pretty childish now. Barkley is just lobbing personal insults at Green at this point and Green is responding by ridiculously trying to diminish Barkley’s Hall of Fame NBA career.

We have to be real about this one, y’all. It’s kind of jumped the shark. They need to be adults about this, squash it and never speak again. That’s the only sensible way to end this.

XFL’s DC Defenders franchise says goodbye with delicious burn of Darren Rovell

If this is how the DC Defenders say goodbye, it will be a beautiful goodbye, dunking on Darren Rovell.

The XFL is gone, with the league suspending its operations this week and laying off most staff. According to reports, the league has no plans to resume operations in 2021. For all intents and purposes, this is the end of the XFL.

While a second pro football league was always going to have a tough fight to survive in this country, it’s impossible to talk about the end of the XFL without talking about the global coronavirus pandemic. The league was forced to shut down just as it was getting off the ground, which essentially doomed it.

Context isn’t exactly the specialty of Darren Rovell, however. The media personality sent out a tweet comparing the run of the AAF to the run of the XFL, noting that the AAF had more games.

The fact that the AAF collapsed due to gross financial mismanagement and a failure to secure sponsoring, and the XFL failed mostly due to a global medical pandemic, is not interesting to Darren, who just wanted to score easy points with a tweet.

The XFL’s DC Defenders, who have had one of the more entertaining Twitter feeds during the team’s short run, could have pointed out all that to Rovell. Instead, in a much better move, they dunked on him.

Part of me hopes this is their last tweet. One beautiful posterization to say goodbye.
