Notre Dame-Oregon State: Sun Bowl Video Preview

Go Irish, Beat Beavers!

Notre Dame closes the 2023 season on Friday against Oregon State in a Sun Bowl contest that will certainly be unique.

Opt-outs are plentiful on both sidelines as plenty of NFL talent won’t be participating in the affair.  However, there is still a 10-win season for Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame on the line as well as a stage to be set for a big 2024.

Will Notre Dame take care of business in the Sun Bowl?

Fighting Irish Wire staff writers Nick Shepkowski and Jeff Feyerer got together Thursday night to preview the game and discuss the state of the program, including the recent hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and plenty more.

Check it out in full below (and do so after the game as well as it features plenty of non-Sun Bowl discussion).

Notre Dame-Oregon State: Sun Bowl Staff Predictions

How do you predict a game with so many players opting out?

It seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago that Notre Dame was in Ireland kicking off the 2023 season.  It was a year full of promise but that also featured many frustrations.

Notre Dame started 4-0 before dropping an all-time heartbreaker to Ohio State.  They followed that up with a last second win at Duke before getting boat-raced at Louisville.  All in all the Irish would finish the regular season 9-3 with plenty of promise but also plenty of questions.

Now comes a dam fine Oregon State Beavers team that is going through a transition as a program.  Their days in the Pac 12 are done and their former quarterback turned head coach has left to lead Michigan State.

Both sides have more than a handful of key players from the regular season opting out.  Notre Dame can finish the year with 10 wins, something they’ve accomplished every year since 2017 besides last year.  Oregon State could finish 9-4 with a victory.

With so many key pieces on both sides this certainly isn’t the easiest game to handicap.  However, we will certainly try our best to tell you how it goes as the 2023 season sees a bow put on it.

College Football Week 13 Scoreboard: No. 2 gets routed, 4 top 10 teams fall!

Wild season just keeps getting wilder…

Rivalry weekend in college football again didn’t disappoint as the regular season is within hours of drawing to a close.  Huge games with major impacts on conference championship races, postseason bowl bids, and the College Football Playoff all took place Saturday.

The biggest game of the day happened between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan.  Will the loser of that one still be in good standing for the College Football Playoff?

Or would a USC win over Notre Dame unseat the losing team from a potential playoff spot?  That and so much more as the insane college football season that 2022 has been got even that much crazier over the weekend.

Here are all of your College  Football Playoff rankings, top 25 scores:

Watch: Stanford’s epic collapse against Oregon State

Any other Notre Dame fans think of Miles Boykin immediately upon seeing this?

Notre Dame will play host to annual rival Stanford next week and the two teams couldn’t be coming from more opposite places. The Irish knocked off No. 16 BYU in Las Vegas on Saturday night in the Shamrock Series game they dominated statistically although the scoreboard didn’t reflect it.

Notre Dame has won three in a row after dropping its first two of 2022 and has a reeling Stanford team up next.

We already knew Stanford wasn’t good, but its ability to snatch defeat from the hands of victory reached an unreal level Saturday night against Oregon State.

Stanford was in control of their late-night home affair with the Beavers for the majority of the contest. Even leading by five with just over 20 seconds left, the Cardinal giving up 56 yards and a go-ahead touchdown didn’t seem likely.

But this isn’t David Shaw’s Stanford squad from a decade ago. This is a Stanford team that has fallen on hard times and become a Pac-12 bottom feeder. A Pac-12 bottom feeder that found an incredible way to lose. Check it out below.

Notre Dame (3-2) hosts Stanford (1-4) under the lights at Notre Dame Stadium.

Oregon, Oregon State Advised to Play Without Large Crowds

One of college football’s biggest games of 2020 is now set to be played without a crowd as Oregon has banned large crowds through September.

Perhaps the biggest non-conference game this college football season is set to take place on September 12 when Ohio State travels west to take on Oregon at Autzen Stadium in what is a rematch of the 2014 College Football Playoff Championship Game.

You’d think it’d be one of, if not the toughest game on Ohio State’s schedule this season, playing in a tough place to play like Autzen.  A helping hand may have just been lent to the Buckeyes though as Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced Thursday that “The Oregon Health Authority is advising that any large gathering, at least through September, should be canceled or significantly modified.”

You can watch Governor Brown’s entire press briefing from Thursday.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play at Oregon on September 5, Ohio State comes to town on the 12th while Hawaii is slated to visit on the 19th.  If this is to get extended even a week beyond that it’d take away the crowd from the October 3 Oregon/Washington game as well.

This comes a week after University of Oregon president Michael Schill expressed doubt about having packed crowds at Autzen Stadium at any point in 2020.

“I doubt very much we’re going to have a packed stadium watching our Ducks play football,” Schill said on CNN. “We’re hoping our football games will be played, but we’re not going to take any chances with the health and safety of our student-athletes or the people who come to watch them.”

The same set of rules will obviously apply to Oregon State who is slated to host three games in September against Colorado State, Portland State and Washington State.

For what it’s worth, Notre Dame plays just one game west of South Bend, Indiana this year, that coming on Thanksgiving weekend for annual battle with USC.

This entire global pandemic tests you in various ways.  Some days I get up and think we’re about to turn a corner and that we’re about to approach our old sense of normal.  Then on others I’m convinced we’ll never see crowds of more than a couple thousand gathered in the same place ever again.

I may change my mind about this when I get out of bed Friday morning but I’m guessing Oregon just happens to be the first to announce this and that plenty of other states will soon be doing something similar.

Prediction

Arizona State 31, Oregon State 20

Moneyline (ML)

Oregon State is suddenly playing better but still is a 4-5 team, having lost four of five at home. They offer value at +120, but the SUN DEVILS are the smarter bet at -143.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Arizona State returns a profit of $7.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The SUN DEVILS have not been a good bet against the spread. They are favored by 2.5 (-121) on the road, but have covered the spread only three times all season.

Oregon State, on the other hand, is 6-3 against the spread. However, the Arizona State defense should hold up and RB Eno Benjamin should be able to be the workhorse, as the Beavers allow over 192 rushing yards per game.

Lay the points with ASU.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 57.5 points, which is high. Both teams have hit the under in five of their nine games this season. The two teams combine to average 53 points. That is right about where Saturday’s game will end.

Take the UNDER (-115).

4 takeaways from Oklahoma’s 77-69 win over Oregon State

After a slow start, a huge lead and a close finish, Oklahoma improves to 3-0 on the season with a win over Oregon State.

After a slow start, a huge lead and a close finish, Oklahoma improves to 3-0 on the season with a win over Oregon State.

The Sooners’ 77-69 victory over is the Beavers’ first loss of the season.

THIS TEAM IS FUN

When the Sooners are clicking, they are a really fun group to watch. Oklahoma showed off their athleticism, shooting abilities and defensive prowess against the Beavers. It did not matter who was out there, once the Sooners found their groove, they were going to score.

Four Sooners finished the game in double digits with Kristian Doolittle leading the way with 19 points.

austin reaves is a walking heat check

Austin Reaves is really going to hurt an opposing fan base one day. The transfer from Wichita State was 5-9  from three point range, finishing the game with 17 points and one rebound.

KRISITAN DOOLITTLE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE

In his second game back from suspension for playing in an unsanctioned summer league (a suspension in which ESPN commentator, Jay Bilas ripped the NCAA for), Doolittle looked like he does when he plays to his full ability.

Doolittle was the Sooners’ leading scorer and rebounder with 19 points and a career high, 16 boards. Six of those points came from deep as Doolittle tickled both times he shot behind the arc.

Aside from his 19 and 16 efforts, Doolittle also had three assists in his 32 minutes.

FULL TEAM WIN

Not just the starters got in on the action. Kur Kuath, Jalen Hill, Victor Iwuakor and Alondes Williams all posted stats against the Beavers. For what they lacked with their 18 combined points, they made up for in play that be kept with numbers. The Sooners kept Oregon State relatively quiet, forcing the Beavers on multiple minute-long scoreless streaks.

Oklahoma’s next game is Monday, November 18, against William & Mary at the Lloyd Noble Center. The game will be broadcasted on Fox Sports Southwest. Tip-off is set for 6pm CT.
