Instant analysis of Bears’ 17-9 loss vs. Packers in Week 18

The Bears went out with a whimper against the Packers. We recap Chicago’s final game of the 2023 season:

Justin Fields may have worn a Chicago Bears jersey for the last time.

In a lackluster showdown in Week 18, the Bears (7-10) were defeated by the Green Bay Packers (9-8), 17-9, marking a 10-game losing streak against their rivals.

While Fields showed flashes of brilliance, the Packers quickly dimmed his light. As the 2023 season concludes, questions will be asked, not just about Fields’ future but about the future of the coaching staff and the Bears’ first overall pick.

On offense, Chicago moved the ball efficiently on the opening drive, taking a quick 3-0 lead. But Green Bay quickly turned up the heat. The Bears’ offensive line couldn’t stand up against the Packers, and Fields was sacked five times. The most critical sack came in the fourth quarter, forcing a tough third-and-22 situation, effectively ending any chance of a Bears comeback.

Chicago’s defense played well, limiting the Packers to 17 points, which generally would’ve kept the Bears in the game. In previous wins this season, holding teams to 14 points was a winning formula. This game could have been within Chicago’s grasp with a more aggressive offense.

But oddly, the Bears played it safe, limiting Fields to only 16 pass attempts — a season low — against a defense that most teams attack through the air. Chicago took the road less traveled, and it was a dead end.

With the 2023 season over, the attention turns towards the 2024 NFL draft. The fate of the coaching staff and quarterback and the future ownership of the first overall pick are all up for debate. Fans seem mixed on all topics.

Whatever the outcome this offseason, it’ll inspire hope in the fanbase. However, people will only know if the Bears are poised for a turnaround or if fans are in for more heartache once the 2024 regular season begins.

Bears vs. Jaguars game recap: Everything we know

The Bears overcame an uneven first half to rout the Jaguars 41-17, moving into the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoff picture.

With the Chicago Bears in firm control of their playoff destiny, two wins to close out the season would lock up the seventh seed in the NFC. So even against a Jacksonville Jaguars team that had lost 13 straight games, there was a lot on the line.

The Bears overcame an uneven first half to rout the Jaguars 41-17 on Sunday in Jacksonville, moving into the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoff picture. Now, Chicago needs just one more win — or an Arizona Cardinals loss — to clinch a postseason berth for the first time since 2018.

Despite the victory — which included two takeaways — Chicago’s defense once again struggled, this time against a bad offense early on in the game. The rapid decline of this once-dominant Bears defense is especially concerning considering Chicago is heading into Green Bay in need of a win in Week 17.

While the Bears offense only managed 10 points in the first half against one of the worst defenses in the league, they came to life in the third quarter — of all times — to take firm control of the game. Chicago scored 21 points in the third quarter to jump out to a commanding 34-10 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Bears have now scored 30-plus points in four straight games for the first time since 1965, a clear indication that it’s likely head coach Matt Nagy and his coaching staff, and possibly quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, will return to Chicago in 2021.

Before we recap the game, we want to give a special thanks to the San Francisco 49ers for beating the Arizona Cardinals. With the Cardinals’ loss, all the Bears have to do is win out as they control their destiny. They got one of their wins in a 41-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

It was a tale of two halves for the Bears and Jaguars. The Jaguars were able to get on the board first with a 26-yard field goal, but the Bears were able to answer with a Mitchell Trubisky passing touchdown to tight end Jimmy Graham.

Then it seemed like the Bears were going to get off to that comfortable lead as they took a touchdown lead with a Cairo Santos 20-yard field goal, but the Jaguars would end up tying the game. Former Bears quarterback Mike Glennon was able to find DJ Chark Jr. for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 10-10.

The Bears were able to drive down the field, but Trubisky returned to old habits. After extending the play by running around in the backfield, Trubisky threw an interception in end zone where his target was covered by four Jaguars. Instead of taking the game into halftime, the Jaguars got aggressive and it costed them as Roquan Smith picked off Glennon and the Bears were able to get a quick field goal to take a 13-10 lead.

In the second half, it was all Chicago. On the first possession, the Bears drove down the field and capped it off with a rushing touchdown from Trubisky. Then the Bears scored with a rushing touchdown from David Montgomery. After the touchdown, Smith was able to get another interception and set the Bears up another touchdown from Trubisky to Graham.

At this point, it was a 34-10 game and the Bears were very well on their way to a win. However, they weren’t done yet. Undrafted rookie free agent running back Artavis Pierce scored the first rushing touchdown of his career from three yards out to extend the Bears 41-10 lead.

The Jaguars were able to get on the board in the second half as Glennon found rookie Laviska Shenault Jr. for a 34-yard touchdown. The Bears were able to run the clock out and the defense was able to keep the Jaguars from putting up more points.

The Bears have scored 30-plus points in four straight games for the first time since 1965, which has helped them gain the seventh seed in the NFC playoff picture.

Chicago hasn’t clinched a playoff spot yet. The Bears will have to beat the Green Bay Packers or hope for the Cardinals to lose to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17. Not many will like this, but the ideal situation is to root for the Packers to beat the Tennessee Titans.

A Packers win will secure them with the No. 1 seed and will most likely have their starters sit out in the contest with the Bears. If the Packers were to lose to the Titans, Green Bay will have something to play for and will be at full strength.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 41-25 loss to the Packers in Week 12

The Bears had no answer for the Packers as they suffered an embarrassing 41-25 loss and fell to 5-6 on the season.

At this point, there’s not much you can say about the Chicago Bears as they suffered an embarrassing 41-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Bears offense and defense had no answer for the Packers as they fall to 5-6.

The Packers got off to a nice start as quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense got the ball first. They marched down the field and were able to score first as Rodgers found receiver Davante Adams for a touchdown. The Bears were able to answer back with a field goal from Cairo Santos, but after that, things went bad.

After the Bears field goal, the Packers offense were able to respond with another touchdown from Rodgers to Marcedes Lewis to take a 13-3 lead. Mitchell Trubisky was able to get the start at quarterback for the Bears, but he still didn’t look comfortable.

On the second possession, Trubisky threw an interception, which gave the Packers an opportunity to extend their lead. Rodgers was able to find Allen Lazard to extend their lead to 20-3. Well, on the Bears next possession, Trubisky fumbled the ball and Packers linebacker Preston Smith recovered the football and returned it for a touchdown.

Before halftime, the Bears were able to score as Trubisky connected with receiver Allen Robinson to cut into the Packers lead. The Bears were able to get the ball to start the second half as they trailed 27-10, but the offense couldn’t get anything going.

After a couple of disappointing plays on offense and defense, the Bears saw themselves trailing 41-10 into the fourth quarter. The Bears were able to score two garbage time touchdowns as Trubisky found Robinson for his second touchdown, then running back David Montgomery for his first of the day.

It was Trubisky’s first game back after starting 3-0 and he finished 29-for-46 with three touchdowns, two interceptions and three fumbles (one lost fumble). The Bears started 5-1, but have now lost five straight games.

The Bears still have a chance to make the playoffs, but they don’t look like a playoff team. The NFC isn’t mathematically locked up, but now the Packers hold a three game lead over the Minnesota Vikings and the Bears.

Hopefully, the Bears can bounce back next week against the Detroit Lions, who will be without head coach Matt Patricia.

Bears vs. Vikings game recap: Everything we know

It’s the same old song for the Bears, who lost their fourth straight game, a 19-13 loss to the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

It’s getting exhausting watching the same game every week with this Chicago Bears team. Once again, the Bears relied on their defense — and this time special teams — to help keep them in the game long enough to blow it themselves, as Chicago lost their fourth straight game — a 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.

Facing one of the NFL’s worst defenses, the Bears offense managed a lowly 149 total yards, including four three-and-outs in the second half. They were once again outscored by another unit — this time their special teams, as Cordarrelle Patterson returned a kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Bears third quarter points for just the second time this season.

The Bears fell to 5-5 on the season, and the playoffs are all but a wash at this point. Luckily, they’re headed into a bye week, where they have a lot of self-reflection to do on offense, as well as get healthy heading into a primetime showdown against the Green Bay Packers when they return in Week 12.

The only question is — who will be under center? It sounds more and more like it’ll be Mitchell Trubisky’s second chance with Nick Foles suffering a leg or hip injury that had him carted off the field in the final minutes.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 19-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 10

The Bears dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 5-5 on the season with a 19-13 loss to the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

We are starting to run out of ideas on how to describe football games for the Chicago Bears. Nonetheless, it wasn’t a good game for the Bears as they were defeated 19-13 by the Minnesota Vikings.

On the opening drive for the Vikings, they got things going. The Vikings were marching down the field, but the Bears defense was able to force their first turnover of the game. However, the Bears couldn’t capitalize on the Vikings mistake. On the second play of the Bears opening drive, Nick Foles threw a pass right through Anthony Miller’s hand and it was intercepted by Harrison Smith.

The Vikings were able to capitalize on the Bears turnover. Kirk Cousins connected with Adam Thielen for a 17-yard touchdown to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bears were able to respond after the Vikings scored. The offense got within the 10 yard line, but settled for the 23-yard field goal.

After the Bears cut into the Vikings lead, punts were exchanged between both teams. The Vikings were beginning to drive down the field with under two minutes left in the second quarter, but Khalil Mack was able to intercept Cousins and return it for 33-yards. Being set up in Vikings territory, the Bears couldn’t score a touchdown as they settled for a 42-yard field goal to trail 7-6 heading into halftime.

The beginning of the second half was the highlight of the game and seemed to be the game changer. Cordarrelle Patterson opened up the second half with a 104-yard kick return touchdown and gave the Bears a 13-7 lead. The Vikings were able to comeback to tie the game with a pair of field goals by Dan Bailey.

The Vikings were able to pull through for the lead as the Cousins connected with rookie Justin Jefferson to get into Bears territory. To finish the drive Cousins found Thielen for the second time today in the endzone to extend the lead. The Vikings did muff the point after attempt, so the Bears trailed by 6.

Heading into the fourth quarter the Bears have totaled -2 yards in the second half. The offense found a way to get positive yards, but fell short in Vikings territory as they turned it over on downs. The Vikings were able to run the clock out with Dalvin Cook and were able to extend the Bears losing streak to four games.

Luckily for the Bears and the fans, the team will heading into their bye week as the get ready to take on the Green Bay Packers. Foles finished 16-for-28 for 106 yards and one interception. But he was carted off the field after being slammed to the ground on an incomplete pass in the final minutes of the game.

Now, it appears that Mitchell Trubisky — assuming he’s healthy after the bye week — will make his grand return to the starting line-up in a Week 12 primetime game against the Green Bay Packers.

Bears vs. Titans game recap: Everything we know

The Titans handed the Bears their third straight loss this season, a 24-17 beating that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicated.

The Chicago Bears continue to find new ways to lose in embarrassing fashion. The Tennessee Titans handed the Bears their third straight loss this season, a 24-17 beating that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicated.

And it all comes back to their offense, which is easily the worst in the NFL. Mind you, this is Year 3 of Matt Nagy, where we were promised noticeable improvement only to get the worst product in that three-year span.

The Titans tried to give this game to the Bears, and they couldn’t take advantage. Chicago’s defense was able to contain the game’s best running back — holding Derrick Henry to just 68 yards on 21 carries — and frustrate Tennessee’s offense into some inconsistency.

After starting 5-1 this season, the Bears have dropped to 5-4, where it feels like the bottom is falling out of this team.

Bears vs. Saints game recap: Everything we know

The Bears lost an absolutely winnable game to the Saints in overtime, and Chicago fell to 5-3 on the season.

For six weeks, the Chicago Bears appeared to be in firm control of their 2020 destiny. They posted a 5-1 record, which included some ugly wins, but they positioned themselves well for a more difficult stretch.

Things have since fallen apart following that Week 6 win against the Carolina Panthers, where the Bears have dropped two straight losses en route to a 5-3 record that currently has them on the outside-looking-in with the playoff race.

Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints was a winnable one that got away from the Bears. After leading 13-3 in the final minute of the first half, the Saints scored 20 unanswered points to build a substantial lead.

The Bears battled back to force overtime, but they couldn’t get it done when they needed to in order to secure the win, losing 26-23 and dropping to 5-3.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 23-16 win vs. the Panthers in Week 6

The Bears got off to a strong start and never looked back, improving to 5-1 after defeating the Panthers 23-16.

It was a strong start for the Chicago Bears as they were able to capitalize on a disastrous first possession by the Carolina Panthers. The Bears never looked back from that first possession and improved to 5-1 after defeating the Panthers 23-16.

The Bears defense did what they did best and kept the opponents offense in check. On that first possession of the game, the Bears were able to secure an interception to help the offense inside the 10-yard line. Nick Foles was able to find rookie tight end Cole Kmet to get the Bears on the board.

The Bears were able to force another turnover as Eddie Jackson knocked the ball out from former Bears running back Mike Davis then the game-winning interception by DeAndrew Houston-Carson. The Bears had other chances to get some takeaways, but those were neglected by penalties. For the second time this season, Jackson had a pick-six negated by penalty.

Another thing that hasn’t changed for the Bears is that the offense remains inconsistent. Foles started the game 11-for-12 and it seemed the Bears offense finally has found their stride, but after that start, the offense just ran out of gas.

The Bears were able to score another touchdown with a Foles quarterback sneak. The touchdown came in the third quarter, which means the Bears have finally scored in all four quarters this season.

Heading into the fourth quarter the Bears had a 20-6 lead, but the Panthers rallied a late comeback. Davis was able to score a touchdown, then a 48-yard field goal brought the Panthers within a touchdown to tie the game.

The Panthers were able to get the ball back with 5:12 remaining but the defense was able to force a turnover on downs. The Bears got the ball inside the two-minute warning but questionable play-calling gave the ball back to the Panthers.

With one timeout left the Panthers got the ball back, but on the first play on the drive, Bridgewater threw an interception to Houston-Carson to seal the 23-16 win.

The Bears continue to win close games and now sit comfortably with a 5-1 record as they are set to face the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night a football.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 30-26 victory over the Falcons in Week 3

The Chicago Bears scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 30-26 and remain undefeated at 3-0.

Well, once again, it was a roller coaster game for the Chicago Bears as nothing was going right. Throughout most of the game, the offense struggled and the defense couldn’t stop the Falcons offense. But the Falcons did what they did best: they blew another lead.

Even though the Bears couldn’t get anything going, the big news coming from the game was Nick Foles entered the game in the third quarter to replace Mitchell Trubisky. The replacement came after a Trubisky interception in Falcons territory. Then the game changed.

Trubisky finished 13-for-21 for 128 yards, but when Foles entered the game he drove the Bears down the field and threw an interception in the endzone. But, believe it not, the Bears would flip the script.

Foles would lead the Bears offense to 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and the Bears defense shut down the Falcons as they go onto stay undefeated. Foles would finish the game 16-of-29 with 188 yards and three touchdowns.

This likely will end the Trubisky era in Chicago as Foles has full control of the starting quarterback job. Foles and the Bears will now have to get ready for an AFC matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
