Ubisoft’s scifi battle royale Hyper Scape is shutting down

No escape, it seems.

Hyper Scape, the neon-cyberpunk battle royale from Ubisoft, will shut down soon.

Over on Hyper Scape’s  website, a statement quietly let everyone know that the free-to-play first-person shooter is closing up shop on April 29, 2022.

“We have made the difficult decision to end development of Hyper Scape and shut the game down as of April 28,” Ubisoft said. “We set out to create a vertical, close-quarters, and fast-paced shooter experience and we are extremely grateful to our community for joining us on our journey.”

Ubisoft didn’t elaborate on why Hyper Scape is shutting down, but it’s likely due to the game never finding an audience. Between Apex LegendsCall of Duty: Warzone, and Fortnite,  the battle royale genre is overflowing with fierce competition.

There are also tons of  great free-to-play games  that make success difficult, even for a huge company like Ubisoft. There’s also the fact that Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline, another free-to-play FPS from Ubisoft, is coming later this year.

Recently, Ubisoft released Rainbow Six Extraction, which is  surprisingly good. The company is also bringing more than  100 games to Xbox  via its Ubisoft+ subscription separate from  Xbox Game Pass, despite being on the same platform.

‘Apex Legends’ squad gets hilariously taken out by downed opponent’s grenade

It’s not easy being in someone else’s highlight reel.

We’ve all been the poor sap in someone else’s highlight reel at some point, which is what happened to some Apex Legends  players when a downed opponent’s stray grenade sent them off to the big drop zone in the sky.

Over on Reddit, user ATDiplomat shared a clip of them taking out an enemy squad — while in a downed state. See, ATDiplomat tosses a grenade straight up in the air just before the attackers down them. When one goes in for a fancy assassination, ATDiplomat’s grenade returns from orbit and eliminates the whole lot of them. The best part is that ATDiplomat had a self-revive shield, so they could get back up and keep playing afterward. Incredible stuff, honestly.

Take a look at this giggle-fit-worthy play by ATDiplomat in Apex Legends for yourself below.

Sometimes a ‘nade is all you need. from apexlegends

It makes me wonder how ATDiplomat fared afterward. Even if they didn’t place first, that was the play of the game, for sure! Cooler than running over people with a tiny tank in Call of Duty: Vanguard, even.

Apex Legends  has been seeing a lot of wild clips like this  ever since Season 11 came out. Given it’s the beefiest update Respawn Entertainment  has ever released for the game, it’s not all that surprising. Even the  battle pass is positively overflowing with cool stuff.

‘Fortnite’ gets fashionable with wildly expensive Balenciaga clothing line

Who needs a savings account when there are plain white Fortnite hoodies?

So, developer Epic Games and luxury fashion house Balenciaga have come together for a $725 hoodie Fortnite hoodie. Yup, a hoodie. Well, there are $395 baseball caps and $495 t-shirts, too, if you’re on a tight budget. Plus a denim jacket for the ultra-low price of $1290!

This collaboration between Balenciaga and Fortnite features real-world clothing items and digital fits. The former is available via Balenciaga’s store, while the latter is on Fortnite’s  in-game item shop. So if you desperately want a white hoodie with the game’s logo on it for your characters, a few V-Bucks won’t dig into your life savings quite as bad as the physical counterpart.

Check out the Balenciaga x Fortnite collaboration event trailer for yourself below.

The Balenciaga x Fortnite character skins include:

  • Game Knight Outfit
  • Unchained Ramirez Outfit
  • Fashion Banshee Outfit
  • Shady Doggo Outfit

There’s also a pickaxe, back bling, gliders, wraps, pickaxes, sprays, and emotes from Balenciaga for the in-game event, which runs from now until Sept. 28.

Epic Games also encourage players to strut their stuff in the Strange Times Square, a virtual Balenciaga store created for the event.

“The Strange Times Featured Hub constructs a virtual Balenciaga store in line with real ones — but set in an unexpectedly strange city,” Epic Games said on Fortnite’s official website. “You can hang out with other fashionable friends, change your look with Changing Booths, and even pick up Balenciaga Fit Outfits straight from the Hub itself!”

Apparently, the best-dressed characters might get featured on billboards around Strange Times Square. It’s all a bit weird, but Fortnite is always bizarre these days.
