Vols move up three spots in USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

Tennessee moves up in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll after a 2-0 start to the 2024-25 season.

Tennessee (2-0) tipped off its 2024-25 men’s college basketball season with two wins during the first week of play.

The Vols defeated Gardner-Webb, 80-64, on Nov. 4 at Food City Center. Tennessee was also victorious, 77-55, at Louisville on Nov. 9.

Tennessee will return to action on Wednesday versus Montana. Tipoff between the Vols and Grizzlies is slated for 7 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Following the first week of the 2024-25 college basketball season, the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll was released. Tennessee was ranked No. 12 during the preseason and are up three spots to No. 9 after two games.

No. 12 Tennessee wins by 22 points at Louisville

No. 12 Tennessee (2-0) defeated Louisville (1-1), 77-55, Saturday at KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The Vols scored the first 10 points of the contest and led, 40-26, at halftime. Tennessee led by as many as 26 points and never trailed against the Cardinals.

Zakai Zeigler and Chaz Lanier scored 19 points each for Tennessee. Zeigler also recorded seven assists, three steals and one block. He also committed 11 turnovers. Lanier scored 11 points during the first-half.

Felix Okpara totaled 10 points, six rebounds and one block, while Jordan Gainey recorded nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Tennessee held the Cardinals to a .267 field goal percentage.

Reyne Smith led Louisville with 18 points. He also recorded five rebounds and one assist.

No. 19 Texas Tops Houston Christian, 90-59, in Dominant Home Opener

No. 19 Texas Longhorns Men’s Basketball defeated Houston Christian, 90-59. Freshman Tre Johnson paces six Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a game-high 28 points in Friday’s win.

Freshman guard Tre Johnson led No. 19 Texas to a decisive 90-59 victory over Houston Christian on Friday night at Moody Center. The crowd of 10,993 witnessed the Longhorns secure their 1,900th all-time victory and 23rd straight home-opening win. Historically the Horn’s are 104-15 in home-openers and have yet to lose in one since a 2001 loss to Arizona, 88-74.

Johnson paced six Longhorns in double figures with a game-high 28 points, converting 11-of-18 shots, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Texas coach Rodney Terry praised freshman guard Tre Johnson for his dedication, noting that Johnson has already embraced a veteran’s mentality of working hard every day, whether it’s in a game, practice, or during conditioning drills.

“I think the biggest thing with freshmen a lot of times is just learning to be consistent,” he said. “Guys are going to follow guys that are about the right things in terms of how hard they work and if they really care about about winning and care about their teammates. I think his guys really know in that locker room that he cares about them and he cares about winning.”

Texas (1-1) jumped to an 18-0 all-time non-conference record at Moody Center. Senior forward Arthur Kaluma recorded his ninth collegiate double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Chendall Weaver added 12 points, five boards, and a game-high three steals.

After a competitive first half, Texas led 42-35 at the break. They opened the second half with a 12-0 run and surged ahead, outscoring HCU 48-24 in the final 20 minutes. Texas shot 54.3% from the field in the second half while limiting HCU to just 25.9%.

The Longhorns continue their homestand Tuesday, Nov. 12, hosting Chicago State at 7 p.m. CT.

Tennessee’s all time basketball results against Louisville

No. 12 Tennessee (1-0) will play Louisville (1-0) on Saturday at KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tipoff between the Vols and Cardinals is slated for noon EST and will be televised by ACC Network.

Saturday will mark the 21st meeting between Tennessee and Louisville. The Cardinals lead the all time series, dating to 1913, 12-8.

The Vols won the last meeting between the two teams, 92-81, during the 2018-19 season at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Tennessee and the Cardinals have played three times in the postseason, including two games in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2008, Louisville defeated the Vols, 79-60, in the NCAA Tournament.  In 1983, the Cardinals defeated the Vols, 70-57, in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1985, the two teams played in a third-place game of the NIT at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. The Vols won, 100-84.

Lady Vols force 31 turnovers in 40-point win over UT Martin

Tennessee defeats UT Martin by 40 points in Kim Caldwell’s second game as head coach.

Tennessee (2-0) defeated UT Martin (0-2), 90-50, on Thursday at Food City Center. Thursday’s win is the second for the Lady Vols under first-year head coach Kim Caldwell.

Ruby Whitehorn led Tennessee in scoring with 18 points. She also led the Lady Vols in rebounds with 14 (eight offensive, six defensive).

Sara Puckett and Samara Spencer led Tennessee in assists (4).

Tennessee forced 31 UT Martin turnovers and scored 48 points off turnovers. The Lady Vols also totaled 50 bench points, 42 points in the paint, 32 second chance points and 29 fast break points.

Tennessee will next play Middle Tennessee State on Nov. 12 at Food City Center. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Bob Kesling set to retire

Bob Kesling, the Voice of the Vols, is set to retire.

The Voice of the Vols, Bob Kesling, is set to retire in April 2025.

Kesling has served as Tennessee’s lead announcer on the Vol Radio Network since 1999. He has served as the play-by-play voice for Tennessee football and men’s basketball, while also hosting “Vol Calls” and “Big Orange Hotline.” Kesling also hosts “The Josh Heupel Show” and “The Rick Barnes Show” on the Vol Television Network.

“Bob’s influence has been remarkable, touching so many lives as the Voice of the Vols and through his heartfelt dedication as a mentor and leader in our Knoxville community for over 50 years,” Tennessee vice chancellor and director of athletics Danny White said. “He embodies the true spirit of someone who has given his all for Tennessee. As an icon in the broadcasting industry, we are deeply appreciative of the professionalism he brings to Tennessee Athletics each time he takes the microphone. His contributions resonate with all of us here on Rocky Top and we cannot thank him enough for everything he has done.”

Dalton Knecht returns to Tennessee and makes first start

Dalton Knecht makes first professional start in return to Tennessee.

In his return to Tennessee, former Vol Dalton Knecht made his first NBA start for the Lakers.

He totaled three points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in the Lakers,’ 131-114, loss to Memphis at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee.

Knecht played 27 minutes against the Grizzlies. He converted 1-of-7 three-point attempts.

He was selected in the first-round of the 2024 NBA draft (No. 17 overall) by Los Angeles.

Knecht, a transfer from Northern Colorado, played for the Vols during the 2023-24 season under head coach Rick Barnes. During his one season at Tennessee, he averaged 21.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

He led the Vols to a SEC regular-season championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

Knecht was the 2024 SEC Player and SEC Newcomer of the Year. He was a consensus All-America standout and earned the Julius Erving Award.

Kim Caldwell recaps Lady Vols’ win versus Samford

Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell recaps the Lady Vols’ season opening win versus Samford.

Tennessee (1-0) defeated Samford (0-1), 101-53, on Tuesday at Food City Center. Tuesday’s contest was the first for Tennessee under head coach Kim Caldwell.

Caldwell was hired as Tennessee’s head coach in April. She met with media following the Lady Vols’ win against Samford.

“Happy to get game one done,” Caldwell said. “Wasn’t the prettiest. I thought we had some really good spots where we looked great, exactly how we should look for most of the game, and then I think we had some moments where we looked like a brand new team.

“So just going forward, trying to work those things out. We have another tough opponent and a quick turnaround, so we have a big day tomorrow.”

Tennessee will next play UT Martin on Thursday at Food City Center. Tipoff for the in-state matchup is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Lady Vols open Kim Caldwell era with win against Samford

Kim Caldwell wins first game as Tennessee’s basketball head coach.

Tennessee (1-0) opened its 2024-25 women’s basketball season on Tuesday at Food City Center. The Lady Vols defeated Samford, 101-53.

Tuesday’s contest also marked the beginning of the Kim Caldwell era at Tennessee. She is the fourth Tennessee women’s basketball head coach during the NCAA era, joining Pat Summitt, Holly Warlick and Kellie Harper.

Junior forward Zee Spearman led Tennessee with 25 points against Samford. Jewel Spear, Ruby Whitehorn, Samara Spencer and Talaysia Cooper also scored 10-plus points for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee totaled 40 bench points, 54 points in the paint, 50 points off turnovers, 31 second chance points and 36 fast break points.

9,515 were in attendance at Food City Center.

Tennessee will next play on Thursday versus UT Martin. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST (SEC Network+).
