Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler leads way too early 2022 NFL draft big board

Oklahoma Sooner quarterback Spencer Rattler leading the way on way too early NFL draft big board.

On Friday, eight members of the Oklahoma football program will take part in the annual pro day. These Sooners are giving scouts their first looks in workouts similar to what would have been conducted at the NFL combine. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was canceled and more emphasis was placed on the individual pro day workouts.

Despite the fact the 2021 NFL draft is weeks away, that hasn’t prevented some way-too-early big boards to be published for the next draft class. Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler will be among the top names mentioned all season long. In fact, he was listed as the No. 1 overall prospect on this particular big board for next year.

No. 1: Spencer Rattler, Quarterback

When you play the position of quarterback, your chances of being selected No. 1 overall increase dramatically. In 2018 it was Baker Mayfield, 2019 it was Kyler Murray and last year it was Joe Burrow. Current Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler could be next. That is if he decides to forgo his college eligibility and declare for the NFL draft after just two full seasons in Norman, Oklahoma. It wouldn’t be a shock to anyone.

Two of Lincoln Riley’s last three QBs went No. 1 overall, and Rattler has the same talent ceiling of a Baker Mayfield or a Kyler Murray. In fact, I could argue he’s the most natural thrower of the football among that group. Rattler is slight of frame at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, but he makes up for that with a penchant for the spectacular as an out-of-structure performer and deadly accuracy when allowed to play on time.

Rattler threw for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 67% of his passes and averaging 9.6 yards per attempt in his first season as a starter. Expect those numbers to only improve next season as he guides what will assuredly be a healthier and more talented Sooner offense.  – 247Sports

Rattler was the only Oklahoma Sooner to show up in the top 10 on this way-too-early big board from 247Sports.

Other Sooners in first-round consideration:

  • Austin Stogner, Tight End
  • Nik Bonitto, Edge Rusher
  • Perrion Winfrey, Interior Defensive Line

Big 12 players in first-round consideration:

  • Breece Hall, Running Back (Iowa State)
  • Charlie Kolar, Tight End (Iowa State)

There is still nearly a year before the NFL draft in 2022 will occupy our minds, but these are likely the players to keep an eye on during the next season.

Top 10 returning Oklahoma Sooners on offense according to PFF

The Oklahoma Sooners top returning offensive players according to their PFF grade.

The Oklahoma Sooners are expecting to be a top offense in college football once again. They will be led by their quarterback Spencer Rattler, a frontrunner for the Heisman Memorial Trophy. He has one of the highest returning grades in the country, not just the Big 12 Conference according to Pro Football Focus.

Other key returners include standout freshman wide receiver Marvin Mims, who led Oklahoma in receiving. Austin Stogner returns to reprise his role as the mismatch across the middle of the field at tight end. The Sooners also return three starters on the offensive line who will be keys to protecting the quarterback.

Kennedy Brooks had the top grade in 2019 according to PFF. However, on this list of top returning offensive players, it focuses only on those who played in at least five games in 2020.

The top 10 returning offensive players based on their PFF grade:

Who is the Sooners under the radar impact player in 2021?

Oklahoma tight end, Austin Stogner took advantage of opportunities in 2020 and emerged as one of the team’s best pass-catchers.

In reflecting back on the Sooners’ 2020 season, one player continuously made an impact. Tight end/H-back Austin Stogner emerged as a skilled pass-catcher and Spencer Rattler’s go-to target on third down. The connection between the two is reminiscent of the relationship former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield had with tight end, Mark Andrews between the hash marks.

In eight games played (four starts), Stogner was third on the team accumulating 26 receptions, 422 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and a 16.2 yards per catch- second only to Marvin Mims. More impressive considering the shocking events that unfolded for No.18.

Stogner missed 4 1/2 games including the Big 12 Championship vs. Iowa State due to a knee injury suffered in the second half vs. Kansas that turned into something much worse. The injury was followed by a staph infection on his quad muscle that required surgery and rounds of medication.  Stogner lost 35 pounds as a result of the infection and the journey back was more challenging than anticipated.

He returned for the Cotton Bowl but played few snaps recording one reception for 12 yards. The setback will no doubt lead to a comeback for the talented hybrid player and like Stogner vocalized on Twitter, “trust the process.”

Stogner earned second-team All-Big 12 selection by AP and Academic All-Big 12 first-team honoree for his accomplishments following the 2020 season. The former four-star recruit took advantage of his increased role on the field in 2020 as OU’s starting tight end.

Stogner’s relationship with Rattler began before both were listed on Oklahoma’s roster. The duo was paired together at Nike The Opening Finals All-Star Camp in 2018 and their bond has continued to develop and translate onto the field for the Sooners.

Stogner is smooth at transitioning into turns on routes to create separation and make himself an available open target for Rattler. He is known for his stellar receiving skillset and one-on-one mismatches created, but he also made strides as an in-line blocker in 2020. Several of his run blocks provided open seams for rushers by sealing off the boundary, out leveraging defenders.

Stogner will be a player to watch for in 2021! He flew under the radar in 2020 but now the Big 12 will have to take into account where No.18 is in Lincoln Riley’s formations.

Oklahoma starting TE Austin Stogner back for Cotton Bowl against Florida, been out since Kansas game

Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner is making his return to action Wednesday night when the Sooners take on Florida in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma is getting a big piece of their offense back.

Tight end Austin Stogner has been out since suffering an injury in the Kansas game all the way back on Nov. 7th. He will now make his return to the Sooners lineup this evening in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Florida.

On the year Stogner has caught 25 passes for 410 yards and three touchdowns, becoming a really nice safety blanket for quarterback Spencer Rattler. His return to the lineup is understandably huge for the offense and it will be interesting to see how much of a role he will have in this first game back.

This news comes on the heels of the Gators being reportedly without several key defensive players including their leading tackler in linebacker Ventrell Miller. So while Florida’s defense has gotten thinner, Oklahoma’s offense has gotten stronger.

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl is set to get underway later this evening at 7:00 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler, Creed Humphrey, Isaiah Thomas and Gabe Brkic named AP All-Big 12 First Team

Four Oklahoma players were named to the AP All-Big 12 first team on Thursday with another five getting placed on the second team.

The end of the season accolades keep coming in for Oklahoma.

On Thursday the AP All-Big 12 teams were announced with nine players receiving honors including four on the first team. Those four are quarterback Spencer Rattler, center Creed Humphrey, defensive tackle Isaiah Thomas and kicker Gabe Brkic.

Rattler was not included on either of the conference’s All-Big 12 teams that were announced last week, which he expressed his displeasure about, and Thomas was on second team as no Sooners defensive players received first team honors. Head coach Lincoln Riley made it clear the team was displeased by those lack of selections. Those frustrations are certainly receiving some validation given the honors that have come their way since including Rattler being deemed the Big 12 Player of the Year by Pro Football Focus.

The five players who were named to the AP All-Big 12 second team are offensive tackle Adrian Ealy, tight end Austin Stogner, wide receiver Marvin Mims, linebacker Nik Bonitto and cornerback Tre Brown.

Similar to Rattler, Bonitto was not named to the first or second team All-Big 12 either, but was named an All-American by Pro Football Focus.

Oklahoma will conclude their season in less than a week next Wednesday night against the Florida Gators in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

Big 12 Championship: Oklahoma without starting TE Austin Stogner, again, for Iowa State

Oklahoma will be without starting tight end Austin Stogner for Saturday’s Big 12 Championship Game against Iowa State.

No. 10 Oklahoma is preparing to play for a sixth consecutive conference title when they do battle with No. 6 Iowa State in Arlington Saturday for the Big 12 crown. When they do so, they will once again be without starting tight end Austin Stogner.

Stogner suffered an injury in the Sooners win over Kansas back on Nov. 7th and has not been active since missing both Bedlam as well as the matchup with Baylor two weeks ago.

Obviously this is a big blow to the Oklahoma offense as Stogner had really developed into quarterback Spencer Rattler’s safety blanket earlier in the season. Luckily for Lincoln Riley and the offense, the h-back/tight end group is one of the deeper positions on the team.

The attention will now turn to Brayden Willis, Jeremiah Hall and Mikey Henderson to help pick up the production that Stogner was able to provide in his action. They have done well so far this season, and they’ll need to again against the Cyclones.

The Sooners and Iowa State are set to do battle for the Big 12 title at 11:00 a.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on ABC.

Oklahoma will be missing WR Jadon Haselwood among other players for Oklahoma State

Oklahoma will be without WR Jadon Haselwood among others tonight in Bedlam as they host Oklahoma State.

As Oklahoma prepares to host Bedlam rival Oklahoma State within the hour, the Sooners will be missing multiple key players tonight.

As Sooners Wire reported earlier today, TE Austin Stogner is out today due to injury. It also was clear in warmups that starting CB Jaden Davis was going to be a no-go this evening as well as backup safeties Bryson Washington and Justin Broiles.

We can now add some more players to that list – including WR Jadon Haselwood who had just made his return from injury two weeks ago against Kansas.

LaRon Stokes and Jon Michael-Terry are the other names that will catch people’s eye as inactives this evening.

There are some players here that Oklahoma will sorely miss, especially Jaden Davis, but given the gloom and doom reported earlier today about the state of the Sooners’ roster – it probably could have been a lot worse.

Bedlam kicks off here soon at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ABC.

Source: Oklahoma starting TE Austin Stogner will not play against Oklahoma State

Oklahoma had been hoping all week that one of its more talented pass-catchers would be ready for Bedlam, but he is not.

Oklahoma had been hoping all week that one of its more talented pass-catchers would be ready for Bedlam, but he is not.

Austin Stogner went down in the Kansas game two weeks ago, went to the locker room and then missed the rest of the game. The bye week came at a good time for players like him, and Lincoln Riley voiced some confidence that things were progressing well there on Monday

“Doing better,” Riley said on the Big 12 teleconference. “Sore. I imagine the off week, there was some benefit to him there having some time. So, haven’t had ‘em back on the field yet this week, so we’ll get him back out there, see how he’s doing. Sore last week, but making improvements.”

Things, though, have not progressed in the way Oklahoma and Stogner wanted this week. He has been a game-time decision and there was even hope of him playing on Thursday night.

That won’t be the case, a source close to the situation told Sooners Wire. Stogner will not be playing against Oklahoma State as he still recovers from a deep thigh bruise and a lingering knee issue suffered in the Kansas game. It is unclear if he will be ready for the West Virginia game a week from now.

Stogner is the Sooners’ second-leading receiver and Spencer Rattler’s safety blanket on third down. He has 410 receiving yards and three touchdowns in seven games this year.

At the same time, a source told Sooners Wire that experienced H-Back Brayden Willis will in fact make his return to the field on Saturday. That will give Oklahoma a big boost alongside starter Jeremiah Hall and budding freshman Mikey Henderson.

Riley said Spencer Rattler is 100 percent and Sooners Wire can’t confirm whether more people than Austin Stogner will be out for Bedlam.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are scheduled to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Lincoln Riley says Spencer Rattler, Austin Stogner are ‘fine’ after injuries in Kansas game

What could’ve been disaster to Oklahoma’s chances at its sixth-straight Big 12 Championship has been avoided. Two injured players are fine.

What could’ve been disaster to Oklahoma’s chances at its sixth-straight Big 12 Championship has been avoided.

Spencer Rattler went down with a hip injury and was removed from the game against Kansas before returning for the next three drives, two of which coming after halftime. It was clear at the time he wasn’t near 100 percent and was laboring through the game.

“It was just a little sore,” said Lincoln Riley after the game about Rattler. “I think just trying to get through and finish on his throws, you could tell it was affecting him just a little bit. He was able at the end of his game to start getting it loosened back up and started throwing the ball fine again there at the end. He was fine. Had he not been, had the game not been out of hand, we certainly would have left him in.”

“Yeah, I got hit pretty good on my hip,” Rattler said after the game. “So, my hip pointer, just under my rib cage. It just kinda feels like a bad bruise. I couldn’t really finish … you could tell, I didn’t have any of my power the whole second half, and after that on some of the completions as well. I was probably playing at 50 percent, but sometimes you gotta toughen it out and go out there and just help the team in whatever way you can, but luckily, nothing serious. Just a bruise.”

Austin Stogner also went down in the game and was actually removed from the game and went to the locker room. It appeared his injury was a lower body injury.

Riley alleviated any concern about the two’s health for the game against Oklahoma State in two weeks.

“Oh, I mean, they’re both fine,” he said. “If we played this week, they’d both be fine. So we’ll use it to our advantage, but it wouldn’t be a determining factor on them playing or not.”

Oklahoma is on a bye week before playing Oklahoma State on Nov. 21 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Austin Stogner leaves Oklahoma’s game against Kansas with apparent injury

Oklahoma TE Austin Stogner has left the game after suffering an injury on his long reception in the second quarter.

Perhaps the single biggest focus of Oklahoma’s game against Kansas today was to survive the afternoon without being bit by the injury bug. That has not been the case today.

After Spencer Rattler already had some hip issues earlier in the game, Austin Stogner is now dealing with an injury of his own that has removed him from action.

The injury occurred on a long reception in the second quarter that ended with him taking a big hit that created a bit of an awkward fall.

Stogner tried to stay in the game for a bit, but it was clear he wasn’t right and was removed from the game and headed to the locker room. The expectation is that he will be done for the day with the game well in hand.

The Sooners currently lead the Jayhawks 41-3 in the early stages of the third quarter.
