Buffaloes TE Austin Smith hits the transfer portal

Colorado lost TE Austin Smith to the transfer portal

On Saturday, tight end Austin Smith became one of the latest Colorado Buffaloes football players to announce his intentions to enter the transfer portal. Smith will have three years of eligibility remaining after playing in Boulder for two seasons.

The athletic TE came to Colorado as an oversized wideout and took a redshirt year to learn his new position. Smith was able to hit the field last season after earning some preseason praise from former head coach Karl Dorrell. In last season’s Minnesota game, Smith was able to score a touchdown on his first career catch on a nifty one-handed snag.

We wish the best to Smith at his next school.

Behind starter Brady Russell, CU Buffs tasked with brining along young tight ends

Karl Dorrell talked about the Buffs’ tight ends not named Brady Russell

Head coach Karl Dorrell represented the Colorado Buffaloes at the Front Range Huddle on Wednesday and talked with the media about his football team. I took the opportunity to ask him about his tight end group.

As I’ve noted in previous posts, I’m really high on CU’s tight ends. They are a young, talented bunch and each player brings a unique set of skills to the table.

The group is led by senior Brady Russell, but a really young group waits behind him. So, I asked Dorrell how he plans on keeping the younger tight ends ready to play if need be.

“That’s a challenge because they have to accelerate their learning, whether they’re ready or not,” Dorrell said. “But we do feel the guys, the freshmen that are here, there’s only one that’s a true freshman that came back. Caleb Fauria is healthy now and he’s been here for a while. He’s technically a freshman (and) he should be okay. Eric Olsen’s the one that hasn’t had much time. He’s been on some special teams, but he’s made a lot of progres.”

There was one other name that has started to get some attention and that is redshirt freshman Austin Smith. Dorrell expanded on how Smith could become a dynamic weapon for CU

“He’s (Smith) the one guy to me that I think has a unique skill set in terms of he can really be a dominant player,” Dorrell said. “He just can’t see that in himself yet. He’s the one in all of the three, he’s probably the youngest in terms of maturity.”

Previewing Colorado football’s 2022 offense

After going position-by-position last month, we broke down CU’s entire offense and looked at the best and worst-case scenarios

Last month, we broke down the offense position-by-position to see where the Colorado Buffaloes stood before fall camp starts. You can find each of those breakdowns listed below:

The Buffaloes’ offense will be going through quite the transition this year as they only have four to five solid starters back. Numerous players will be battling for those other starting spots while an influx of new coaches brings a few new philosophies and plays to Boulder.

Let’s now tie a bow on the offensive outlook for the 2022 season:
