Auburn, Gus Malzahn has run its course and ‘Bama put nail in the coffin

The Gus Malzahn tenure at Auburn has run its course and it is time for the powers that are to get rid of him or more mediocrity awaits.

It all begins with the expectation. No one outside, maybe not even some of the Auburn players and coaching staff, realistically expected to win against Alabama. The Crimson Tide are too talented, at home and playing for revenge after last year’s game.

That’s fine if you are Vanderbilt or Arkansas, Ole Miss or Mississippi State.

Yet this is Auburn, one of the top-15 programs in the history of college football, and all we can hope for is to keep it close? Is that where we stand as a program?

Unfortunately it is under Gus Malzahn and yet another sign that his tenure has run its course at Auburn. Listen, going into Tuscaloosa to win a game is hard for anyone, but getting absolutely blown out while getting extremely conservative — settling for field goals against this ‘Bama offense isn’t going to get it done — is quite embarrassing.

Oh, and that 56-yard attempt after a good drive in the third quarter? That is just giving up.

It all starts with the offensive line. For quite some time that has been the weakness that has shown up for Auburn time and time again. Bo Nix wouldn’t have had time against Middle Tennessee, let alone Alabama. I don’t blame Nix for having happy feet. It is understandable considering how often he gets hit.

It is also about quarterback development. In no way has Nix thrived under Malzahn or Chad Morris. In fact, no quarterback has. Just look at the past. Jeremy Johnson became a joke. Sean White the same. Jarrett Stidham, a quarterback handed to Malzahn as a future first-round draft pick, became a shell of his former self.

Mac Jones was a 3-star recruit. Nix a 5-star. Who would you want right now?

The defense was at fault as well. As my friend Rett Moncrief texted me, “Malzahn and the Tigers had no answer against a washed-up Pac-12 head coach who calls plays like his playing Xbox with his granddad.”

Mostly, it is about the belief that everyone has in this program. It is hard to see Auburn progressing any more under Malzahn. Like many, he is better served as an assistant somewhere that they like to run the hurry-up, no-huddle (remember that?) and not someone who shrinks up in big moments against the biggest rivals.

If there is a popularity poll for Malzahn, I’m guessing it would likely be under 10 percent. Everyone sees what is happening and not even Kevin Steele, one of the best coordinators in the game, can save it. Not with an offense that is stale, boring and predictable. The Tigers defense got worn down by the end of the third quarter and you could see it. That is on Morris and company.

Listen, if you want mediocrity and four-loss season, we can stick with Malzahn. Yet I think our program deserves better than that. Our fan base deserves better. Our players deserve better.

It will take a lot of money for Malzahn to be ousted but, as many of us know, the money is there. It is about Allen Greene, who has seemingly become a silent participant in controlling the athletic department, to have the guts to fire him, even if it is the right move. Plenty of coaches better than Malzahn are out there.

It’s time to make a move or else there might be a mutiny on the Auburn football ship. People are fed up and I don’t blame them. Heck, I am one of them.

Thanks for the memories, Gus. It has been a highly mediocre experience.

3 reasons Auburn can upset Alabama in the Iron Bowl

Auburn will have to play a near-perfect game on Saturday to upset top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

In the year of 2020 anything is possible. No. 19 Auburn travels to Tuscaloosa this weekend to take on Alabama. Currently, Alabama is favored to win by 25.

The major storyline that developed this past week was that Alabama head coach Nick Saban tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and will not be coaching during the Iron Bowl. That’s not really going to matter as Auburn still has to face Heisman front-runner quarterback Mac Jones and Heisman hopeful running back Najee Harris. The Tigers are outmanned in personnel on both sides of the ball, but there are a few things we can cling to in hopes of securing the win. Here they are:

Instant Analysis: Auburn wins overtime thriller over St. Joe’s in season opener

Auburn led for most of the game but the Tigers couldn’t hold off a St. Joe’s comeback in the season opener.

The long wait for the start of basketball season finally came to an end on Thursday as Auburn took the court for the first time since March 7 and the Tigers won an overtime thriller over St. Joe’s, 96-91, in the Fort Myers Tip-Off Classic.

Here are some instant thoughts following the game:

  • Allen Flanigan looks much more mature than he did just 10 months ago. He is going to have to be a leader for the this team and he proved he is capable of it.
  • Well done, Justin Powell. That was a heckuva debut in an Auburn uniform. He handled the point well against a team that loves to pressure and took advantages of the times he was open, making three three-pointers. And those were two clutch free throws to seal the game.
  • It makes sense that a missed block out would almost cost the Tigers the lead and game. It has been a problem for quite some time now.
  • Where, exactly, was that foul on Akingbola that they called with less than two minutes left?

  • Stretch might be the most fun player to watch this season.
  • Jaylin Williams might be Auburns’ most complete player and he showed why against the Hawks. The sophomore recorded a double-double, his first as a Tiger.
  • The play call for the tying bucket at the end of regulation? Chef’s kiss.
  • I’m really hoping they mop the floor before the game tomorrow. The amount of slipping was dangerous. It reminded me of the court in Maui before that arena got air conditioning.
  • Speaking of, I went outside onto my balcony and yelled toward the arena for them to mop the floor. I’m not sure if they heard me or not.

  • As expected, the Tigers were a bit rusty it their half-court offense but that comes with all the youth and inexperience on the team. It will get better but has a long way to go to become a strength.
  • No surprise here either but this team is athletic as you can get. Offensive rebounding can definitely be a strength.
  • Dylan Cardwell had the ball under the rim a couple of times and … looked to pass it back out? He looks extremely uncomfortable with the ball in his hands.
  • Devan Cambridge tried to rush a few shots in the first half instead of letting his shot come to him. A couple of his three-point attempts were ill advised.
  • It’s the first part of the season but, wow, the refs called this game like it was the Final Four, especially on screens. There had to be at least five or six calls just in the second half on illegal screens. Some were obvious. Some, not so much.
  • Being able to play 10 or more players will help this team, especially this season. These guys are going to get a lot of experience and that continues tomorrow against top-ranked Gonzaga.
