From the NFL’s press release,

The winner of the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award is determined by a vote of current NFL players. From the eight finalists, each team’s players will submit a consensus vote of their choice for the winner. As in Pro Bowl voting, a team cannot vote for its own player.

The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

The players will vote for the winner in December as part of the Pro Bowl balloting process.

Congrats to Chubb for setting such a strong example in just his second NFL season!

The field of 32 nominees – one player from each team around the league – will be reduced to eight finalists, who will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category.

LB Thomas Davis nominated by Chargers for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Thomas Davis is the nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

The Chargers signed linebacker Thomas Davis this past offseason not only for because of the contributions on the field, but for who the person he is to add spark to the locker room and on the field with his leadership skills.

It didn’t take long for Davis to deliver that type of energy to the team upon his arrival from Carolina.

On Thursday, Davis was honored by Los Angeles as their nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. The award recognizes players who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

Last season, the Chargers nominated tight end Antonio Gates. Gates was one of the eight finalists for the award, but quarterback Drew Brees went on to win the award.

The winner will be announced before the Super Bowl at the NFL Honors show and will be determined by a vote from current players. Eight finalists will be selected in December.

Broncos nominate Von Miller for 2019 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The Broncos have nominated outside linebacker Von Miller for the 2019 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

Each year, every NFL team nominates one of their players for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. A panel of four NFL legends then selects eight finalists from those 32 nominees and active players vote for the winner from the finalists on their Pro Bowl ballots.

The Denver Broncos have nominated outside linebacker Von Miller for this year’s award. Miller was also nominated in 2017.

The former players that will choose the finalists are running backs Warrick Dunn and Curtis Martin, safety Leonard Wheeler and linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, who was a key member of the Broncos’ famous “Orange Crush” defense in the 1980s and early ’90s.

“The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition,” the NFL said in a statement.

The winner will be announced during “NFL Honors” on Feb. 1, the evening before Super Bowl LIV. The league will represent $25,000 to the charity of the winner’s choice. Here is the complete list of nominees:

Texans QB Deshaun Watson nominated for 2019 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is a nominee for the 2019 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

The NFL announced their nominees for the 2019 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, and quarterback Deshaun Watson was the representative for the Houston Texans.

A panel of former NFL players including Warrick Dunn, Pro Football Hall of Famer Curtis Martin, Karl Mecklenburg and Leonard Wheeler will select four finalists per conference, and the finalists will be on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when players vote on Dec. 13.

A team cannot vote for its own player; therefore, if Watson were to win it, the votes would come from the other 31 NFL teams’ players.

The NFL created the award in 2014 in honor of Pittsburgh Steelers founding owner Art Rooney, who was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The award goes to the NFL player who, “best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition,” according to a league statement.

WR Larry Fitzgerald (2014), CB Charles Woodson (2015), RB Frank Gore (2016), LB Luke Kuechly (2017), and QB Drew Brees (2018) have been past recipients.

Other quarterbacks nominated for 2019 include Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, Patrick Mahomes, Derek Carr, and Carson Wentz.

The New Orleans Saints nominated left tackle Terron Armstead for this year’s Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, an award that gives recognition to NFL players who best demonstrate sportsmanship during games. All 32 teams initially select one of their own players for the award, which is then winnowed down to eight finalists. Players vote for the winner while submitting their Pro Bowl ballots later in the regular season. Here’s the list of previous winners, including Armstead’s teammate, Drew Brees:

  • 2018: New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees
  • 2017: Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly
  • 2016: Indianapolis Colts running back Frank Gore
  • 2015: Oakland Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson
  • 2014: Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald

It’s clear that this is a very exclusive group to be a part of, and even being nominated in the first place says a lot about the respect Armstead’s teammates share for him. Check out the full list of nominees, by team:

The award-winner will receive a $25,000 donation to a charity of their choice as well as a commemorative trophy. Despite playing at a high level throughout his Saints career, Armstead has often been overlooked for Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition. He first made the cut for those clubs in 2018 as a second-team All-Pro, but he had to back out of his Pro Bowl commitments while recovering from an injury suffered during the season. Here’s hoping Armstead gets the recognition he’s due from his peers for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
