Packers DE Arron Mosby not traveling to Brazil, out vs. Eagles

Packers DE Arron Mosby isn’t traveling to Brazil with the team due to a personal matter. He is out vs. the Eagles.

The Green Bay Packers will be without backup defensive end Arron Mosby during the season opener on Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mosby, who made the 53-man roster after a strong summer, is not traveling with the team to Brazil on Wednesday due to a personal matter and is out for Week 1.

Mosby delivered a pass breakup, a strip-sack and an interception during the preseason, earning a spot on the roster. He converted from off-ball linebacker to 4-3 defensive end in Jeff Hafley’s new scheme and was impressive throughout the summer.

As the fifth or maybe sixth defensive end on the roster, Mosby had a chance to be inactive in Week 1. However, the Packers see him as a potential core special teamer for Rich Bisaccia.

It’s possible Brenton Cox Jr. will have a chance to be active as the fifth defensive end, but the Packers will likely give most of the edge rushing snaps to Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare vs. the Eagles, so Cox could be among the inactives if he doesn’t have a strong special teams role.

The Packers won’t practice while flying over 10 hours to Brazil on Wednesday, but the team estimated six players as limited participations on the updated injury report: receiver Romeo Doubs (hand), linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hip), cornerback Carrington Valentine (hamstring), tight end Tucker Kraft (back), running back MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) and running back Emanuel Wilson (hip). A final injury report with playing status designations arrives Thursday.

Scheme change, special teams and preseason production propel Arron Mosby to Packers’ 53-man roster

A combination of scheme change, hard work, special teams ability and preseason production combined to push Green Bay Packers defensive end Arron Mosby from long shot to the 53-man roster to start the 2024 season.

A combination of scheme change, hard work, special teams ability and preseason production combined to push Green Bay Packers defensive end Arron Mosby from long shot to the 53-man roster to start the 2024 season.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said Mosby — who was claimed last August and switched between inside and outside linebacker for the Packers last season — worked diligently to play defensive end in the new 4-3 base defense, and it all paid off this summer.

“Really proud of the way he’s progressed,” Gutekunst said. “When we first got him, he’s a little bit of a tweener, is he an inside backer, is he an outside backer in our old scheme? As we moved into this 4-3, we put his hand down and he really took off. You have to give him a lot of credit, he’s put a lot of work into it.”

Mosby made a flash play almost every day at training camp and was productive in all three preseason games. He had a quarterback hit and deflected a pass on fourth down in the opener, produced a pair of hurries in Denver and then really broke out in the finale, tallying a strip-sack and an interception. At Pro Football Focus, Mosby graded out as the defense’s third-best player.

He also played snaps on four different special teams groups: kick return, punt return, punt coverage and field goal block.

“Really, not only as an edge rusher and his ability to rush the passer and do all the things we’re asking him to do on the defensive line, but on special teams as well, his ability to play multiple spots there and play it well,” Gutekunst said. “And then he produced. He did a really nice job producing. Kept getting better each week. It was showing up in practice, it showed up in games. Excited for what he was able to accomplish this camp.”

Mosby spent the entire 2023 season on the Packers’ practice squad. A year later, he’s on the 53.

The Packers ended up keeping six defensive ends. Mosby’s ability to play special teams will be vital considering he’s behind Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare at edge rusher and unlikely to see much of the field on defense barring injuries to the top four.

“Try my best to make that impact on special teams, that’s the No. 1 thing how you make a team,” Mosby said.

Still only 25, Mosby said he cut some weight — almost 10 pounds — and added speed this offseason to help transition to the 4-3. He went from high school receiver to college defensive back and linebacker and now to NFL defensive end.

22 former Panthers on this year’s Divisional Round rosters

Here are 22 names from this weekend’s Divisional Round action that Panthers fans may recognize

While the Carolina Panthers are busy trying to find a new power duo, quite a few of their former players are right in the middle of playoff action.

Here are 22 ex-Panthers who are gearing up for this year’s Divisional Round games:

Former Panthers LB Arron Mosby claimed by Packers

The Packers have claimed former Panthers LB Arron Mosby.

Another one of the Carolina Panthers’ training camp casualties is headed to the NFC North.

A day after the team’s former sixth-round pick Bravvion Roy found a new home with the Chicago Bears, departed linebacker Aaron Mosby has been claimed by the Green Bay Packers. The Panthers waived Mosby, as well as defensive lineman John Penisini, on Tuesday to make room for the additions of Deion Jones and Nick Thurman.

Mosby played his college ball at Fresno State from 2017 to 2021—picking up looks as a backer, defensive back and edge rusher. Over his five seasons, he totaled 156 tackles (26.5 for a loss), 6.0 sacks, nine forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions.

He cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Carolina in 2022. Mosby spent much of his rookie campaign on the team’s practice squad, appearing in three games with 33 of his 35 snaps coming on special teams coverage.

Packers claim OLB Arron Mosby off waivers from Panthers

The Packers claimed edge rusher Arron Mosby off of waivers from the Panthers on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers released outside linebacker La’Darius Hamilton on Wednesday, opening a roster spot to claim outside linebacker Arron Mosby off of waivers from the Carolina Panthers, per the league’s transaction wire.

Mosby went undrafted out of Fresno State in 2022. He signed with the Carolina Panthers and appeared in three regular-season games as a rookie. He played 35 total snaps: 33 on special teams and two on defense.

The Panthers elevated him once from the practice squad for a game and twice signed him to the active roster.

Coming out of Fresno State, Mosby ran the 40-yard dash in 4.71 seconds but posted an otherwise low Relative Athletic Score at 3.96 out of 10.0. He is light (250) an edge rusher and produced poor agility and jumping numbers.

Mosby played defensive back, off-ball linebacker and edge rusher at Fresno State. Hie was an All-Mountain West pick after producing 15.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and six forced fumbles as a senior edge rusher.

The Packers may see Mosby as a versatile defender who could be developed at edge rusher or off-ball linebacker. He’s also an experienced special teamer.

Mosby was waived by the Panthers on Tuesday. He will need to pass a physical in Green Bay before he’s signed to the 90-man roster.

Panthers waive 2 players to make room for Deion Jones, Nick Thurman

To clear out roster spots for Deion Jones and Nick Thurman, the Panthers waived John Penisini and Aaron Mosby ahead of Tuesday’s practice.

The Carolina Panthers officially announced three additions on Monday, but only had room for one. So, they had to make room before heading out for practice this morning.

To clear way for linebacker Deion Jones and defensive lineman Nick Thurman on the 90-man roster, the Panthers waived linebacker Aaron Mosby and defensive lineman John Penisini.

Penisini, who started training camp on the physically unable to perform list after not being able to hit the field for organized team activities earlier this offseason, was waived with a failed physical designation. The 25-year-old returned to the NFL this spring, on a one-year deal with Carolina, following his retirement in June of 2022.

The 6-foot-2, 335-pounder played the 2021 season under Panthers defensive line coach Todd Wash in Detroit. Penisini logged a total of two seasons for the Lions, recording 49 combined tackles and 12 starts over 32 games.

Mosby initially joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He appeared in three games this past season.

Panthers make adjustment to practice squad on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the Panthers released QB D’Eriq King and brought LB Arron Mosby back to their practice squad.

With Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore now behind the Carolina Panthers, D’Eriq King’s duty is complete.

On Tuesday, the team released the former University of Houston and University of Miami standout from their practice squad. King, a dual-threat quarterback, was brought in last week ahead of Carolina’s Week 11 contest—likely to help imitate Jackson’s style as a member of the scout team.

King’s release now leaves the Panthers’ practice squad without a quarterback—as Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and PJ Walker fill out the position on the active roster.

Taking King’s spot is linebacker Arron Mosby, who has been signed to the group for the third time this season.

Mosby began the 2022 campaign on the practice squad and would later be inked to the 53-man roster on Sept. 21. He’s appeared in three games, primarily on special teams, and recorded one tackle in the team’s Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Panthers add LB Arron Mosby back to practice squad

After signing DT Daviyon Nixon to their active roster, the Panthers brought rookie LB Arron Mosby back to their practice squad on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, the Carolina Panthers successfully completed a little exchange between their active roster and practice squad.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has brought back linebacker Arron Mosby—who was waived late Monday afternoon—to the latter group. The rookie defender now accounts as the 16th member of the practice squad.

Mosby began the 2022 slate as one of those 16 reserves, and was called up as a standard elevation in both of Carolina’s first two games. He, in his only action thus far, recorded 16 snaps on special teams in Week 2 against the New York Giants.

That spot was temporarily left open due to Tuesday’s move, one which returned defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon to the 53-man roster. The 2021 fifth-round selection was also waived earlier this season in a somewhat surprising decision following the addition of fellow defensive lineman Henry Anderson on Sept. 5.

Nixon played nine defensive snaps in Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints.

Panthers waive LB Arron Mosby

Less than a week after signing him to the active roster, the Panthers waived LB Arron Mosby on Monday.

The Carolina Panthers have Arron Mosby on the move again. But this time, it’ll be a move off their roster.

As announced by the team on Monday afternoon, the rookie linebacker has now been waived. This news comes less than a week after the Panthers signed Mosby to their active roster from the practice squad.

Mosby has been in uniform for each of Carolina’s three games this season. He was a standard elevation off the practice squad in the first two outings, with his only action coming in 16 snaps on special teams against the New York Giants in Week 2.

The 6-foot-4, 248-pound backer signed on with Carolina as an undrafted free agent in the spring. He spent five collegiate campaigns at Fresno State, where he amassed 156 tackles, 6.0 sacks, two interceptions and nine forced fumbles between 2017 and 2021.

With Mosby now off the active roster, the Panthers have an open spot to fill.

Panthers sign LB Arron Mosby to active roster

After being elevated off the practice squad for the first two games of 2022, LB Arron Mosby has now been signed to the Panthers’ active roster.

With wide receiver Andre Roberts and defensive tackle Bravvion Roy both hitting injured reserve over the past week, the Carolina Panthers entered Wednesday two players short of a 53-man roster. Well, they’ve now cut that void in half.

As announced by the team early this afternoon, linebacker Arron Mosby has been signed to the active roster. The 23-year-old rookie had been elevated off the practice squad for both of the Panthers’ two games this season.

Mosby initially signed on with Carolina as an undrafted free agent back in the spring. He spent five collegiate campaigns at Fresno State—where he amassed 156 tackles, 6.0 sacks, two interceptions and nine forced fumbles between 2017 and 2021.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound backer now joins a relatively light position group—one that also features Shaq Thompson, Frankie Luvu, Damien Wilson, Cory Littleton and fellow rookie Brandon Smith. Expect Mosby, as he did in 16 snaps in Week 2 against the New York Giants, to work primarily—if not, exclusively—on special teams.

To replace Mosby’s spot on the practice squad, the Panthers will be bringing back defensive tackle Frank Herron.
