Arkansas baseball season over after TCU eliminates Hogs from NCAA Tournament

Arkansas’ season came to unceremonious end Monday afternoon.

Arkansas spent nearly the entire year ranked inside the Top 10 and were the best teams in the country at home.

The year is now over.

Arkansas was eliminated from the Fayetteville Regional at the NCAA Tournament by Texas Christian on Monday afternoon, 12-4. The Diamond Hogs season ended with a record of 43-18 and regular-season SEC title.

But limited pitching depth hurt badly when Arkansas needed it most.

TCU, a day after scoring 20 against Razorbacks pitching, clubbed eight extra-base hits, including four home runs. All four round-trippers came in the sixth or later as the Horned Frogs rallied from a 4-3 deficit entering the frame.

Kurtis Byrne hit two of the homers and finished 4 for 5 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Cole Fontenelle and Tre Richardson each had three RBI.

Arkansas took the lead via a two-run home run by Jace Bohrofen and a solo shot immediately after from Jared Wegner. But on the whole, the Hogs had just three base hits.

The Horned Frogs will travel to Indiana State for the Super Regional.

Arkansas vs. TCU: How to watch NCAA regional final

For the third time this season, Arkansas will take on TCU.

When the selection committee announced TCU would be in the Fayetteville Regional, it presented an opportunity for the Diamond Hogs to avenge the loss they suffered against the Horned Frogs in their second game of the season.

Then Sunday happened.

TCU dominated the Diamond Hogs 20-5 Sunday afternoon, sending them to the elimination game against Santa Clara. The Hogs knocked off Santa Clara for the second time this weekend, but now they must beat the Horned Frogs twice to advance to a Super REgional.

TCU has outscored Arkansas 38-11 with 40 hits in two games. The Hogs will have to figure out how to slow the bats down, especially Tre Richardson, who I think just hit another home run.

Twitter reacts to TCU’s rout of Arkansas in Fayetteville Regional

Here’s what they’re saying about TCU’s 20-5 blowout win over Arkansas baseball on Sunday.

Arkansas fans had really high hopes entering Sunday’s matchup with TCU. Those hopes quickly diminished in front a packed Baum-Walker Stadium after the first pitch.

Hagen Smith gave up six runs in the first inning as the top of TCU’s lineup was an absolute buzz saw. The Arkansas bullpen didn’t stand a chance as the Horned Frogs had compiled a 14-1 lead by the time action was stopped in the third inning for a lightning delay.

The 58-minute break in the action did nothing to slow down TCU, who was able to cruise to a 20-5 win over the Diamond Hogs. Despite Arkansas being able to bounce back and win over Santa Clara later in the evening, TCU is now in the driver’s seat of the regional.

Here’s what fans were saying on social media about Sunday’s rough performance.

Frogs hammer Hogs to send Arkansas to loser’s bracket

Tre Richardson had a legendary day with three homers, including two grand slams as TCU beat the Razorbacks.

Tre Richardson hit three home runs and had 11 RBI as TCU blasted Arkansas on Sunday afternoon in the Fayetteville Regional, 20-5.

The Razorbacks will play Santa Clara in a win-or-go-home game at 8 p.m. TCU will then get the winner on Monday and will need just one victory to reach the Super Regionals, whereas the other team would need to beat the Horned Frogs twice.

Things started badly and only became worse for the host team Razorbacks. TCU scored six runs in the first, five in the second and then three in the third to take a 14-1 lead early.

Richardson, the TCU second baseman, went 5 for 6 at the plate with two grand slams. Braden Taylor went 4 fo6 6 with four RBI and a home run with four runs.

Hagen Smith, the All-SEC starter who was Arkansas’ ace all year long, pitched just one inning. He allowed the eight runs on six hits and two walks.

Tavian Josenberger and Hudson Polk are the only Arkansas players who had more than a single base knock.

Arkansas baseball vs. TCU: How to watch NCAA Tournament

Arkansas and TCU will go at 2 p.m. Sunday from Baum-Walker Stadium.

The good news for Arkansas and TCU is the weather forecast doesn’t call for rain Sunday.

The top-seeded Razorbacks and No. 2 Horned Frogs will get their game in the Fayetteville Regional at 2 p.m. from Baum-Walker Stadium after their scheduled game Saturday night was postponed because of weather.

Arizona and Santa Clara was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but it didn’t start until after 8 p.m. because of near-constant rain that afternoon. The NCAA rules don’t allow for first pitches after 11 p.m., so tournament organizers postponed Arkansas and TCU about 7 p.m. when it became clear it wouldn’t be able to make that deadline.

The Horned Frogs beat Arkansas in the teams’ only meeting earlier this season, though that was the second game of the year and back in February. The winner will advance to the championship game while the loser will get Santa Clara on Sunday night after the Broncos eliminated Arizona Sunday.

Arkansas and TCU postponed Saturday because of weather

Arkansas and TCU will play Sunday instead because of rain and lightning in Fayetteville.

There will be no replay of 2017, at least.

The originally scheduled game between and Arkansas and TCU in the Fayetteville Regional on Saturday was postponed about 7 p.m. in the evening to Sunday. Constant rains and lightning strikes forced organizers’ hands.

By that point of the night, the day’s first game – Arizona and Santa Clara – had yet to even begin. As it likely wouldn’t start until after 7:30 p.m. at the earliest, Arkansas and TCU, which was scheduled to played at 8 p.m., was pushed to another day.

The events brought back memories of Arkansas’ 2017 regional against Missouri State. Arkansas knocked off the Bears, 11-10, at 3:10 a.m. because of multiple weather delays throughout the day.

Later Saturday, the game time was announced as 2 p.m. Sunday. The lower will play shortly after against Santa Clara, which beat Arizona on Saturday nights.

Arkansas vs. Texas Christian: How to watch NCAA Tournament

First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Arkansas and TCU will play Saturday night with the winner just one game short of a Super Regional appearance.

TCU beat third-seeded Arizona on Friday night to set up the game. Arkansas, the top seed in the Fayetteville Regional of the NCAA Tournament, had knocked off fourth-seeded Santa Clara earlier in the day.

Saturday’s meeting won’t be the first this year between the two schools. The Horned Frogs demolished Arkansas, 18-6, back in February in the College Baseball Showdown in Arlington. But that was only the second game of the season. Since then, the Diamond Hogs spent most of the year inside the Top 5 in the country while TCU largely hovered down around 20th.

The winner isn’t guaranteed a spot in the next round. They’d still have to win a championship Sunday. But it’s easier to do so from the top-half of the bracket instead of the elimination side.

First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
