USC vs Arizona: Stream, injury reports, and broadcast info for Oct. 7, 2023

USC hosts Arizona in Week 6. The big question is which Arizona quarterback will start.

We noted the following earlier in the week:

“On our weekly USC YouTube show with Mark Rogers and Tim Prangley at The Voice of College Football, Steve Rivera opened the broadcast with a 13-minute segment. He offered his insights into the state of the Wildcats as they prepare to face USC on Saturday evening. He fielded questions and provided a more detailed look into the Xs and Os of this matchup. One note of particular importance is that Arizona is likely to attack USC’s defense in different ways, depending on whether Jayden de Laura or (backup) Noah Fifita starts at quarterback for the Wildcats.”

If de Laura starts, Arizona is more likely to attack down the field in the passing game. If Fifita starts, Arizona is more likely to use a ball-control offense with more of an emphasis on the ground game.

Here is the broadcast information you need for USC-Arizona below:

Trojans Wire previews Arizona game with Arizona Desert Swarm

We talked to @AZDesertSwarm about Trojans-Wildcats this coming Saturday in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

We talked to Arizona Wildcat sports website AZ Desert Swarm this week. We discussed this Saturday’s game between USC and Arizona in the Los Angeles Coliseum. We touched on several different points of interest heading into the game against the Wildcats.

One point of note is that Caleb Williams has thrown some ill-advised passes in recent weeks:

“You would know—having watched the ASU-USC game—that Caleb threw two passes in that game which should have been picked. He threw an interception against Colorado. He still gets a little reckless and careless at times.

“He is better than a year ago. We haven’t seen a true clunker from him the way we did at Oregon State in 2022. We don’t expect USC to score fewer than 30 points in any game it plays this year. USC scored only 17 versus Oregon State last season. It’s all about capitalizing on those occasional moments of recklessness. Arizona has to catch an interception if Caleb puts the ball on a plate.”

USC needs Caleb to not put the ball on a plate against Arizona.

USC faces Arizona with several former Wildcats on its 2023 roster

The upcoming Arizona game will involve several Trojans who used to play for the Wildcats. This should be fascinating.

We talked to Arizona Wildcat website AZ Desert Swarm about the upcoming USC-Arizona game. The Trojans host the Wildcats this coming Saturday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time on ESPN.

As you probably know, USC has gained a lot of players from Arizona in recent years via the transfer portal. We discussed the progress of those players in our conversation with AZ Desert Swarm:

“(Dorian) Singer made tremendous catches against USC last year, as you know, prompting Caleb Williams to ask Lincoln Riley if USC could grab Singer in the portal. However, while Singer is great at making contested catches, he is not getting open regularly. He is not separating from defenders. He has been a relative disappointment thus far.

“USC fans want to see a lot more of Kyon Barrs. He needs to be more of a presence on the defensive line and get more reps. Bear Alexander, Solomon Byrd and De’Jon Benton have been really good, but other D-linemen haven’t been as productive, Barrs being one. USC needs all, not some, of its defensive linemen to play well in the same game at the same time. That’s how the Trojans will win the Pac-12. They’re far short of that standard.

“(Christian) Roland-Wallace came up with an interception against Colorado, but he remains part of a secondary which got shredded in the second half. Is he ready to ball out against Oregon and Washington in November? We don’t know.”

USC-Arizona game on October 7 is a late-night kickoff

The big games later this season will not be late-night kickoffs. That’s why USC has to eat one more late start vs Arizona.

This is not surprising at all. USC will play one more late-night kickoff this season on October 7 when the Trojans host the Arizona Wildcats. The Pac-12 released the October 7 kickoff times and network assignments on Monday.

USC-Notre Dame, USC-Utah, USC-Washington, and USC-Oregon will be played in prime time. One of those four games might be played in the middle of the day, but the likely bet is that they will all air from 4 to 5 p.m. Pacific time.

The Arizona game on October 7? You will have to stay up a little later with the Trojans, much as you had to do this past Saturday versus Arizona State.

USC-Arizona is a 7:30 p.m. Pacific time kickoff in the Los Angeles Coliseum. The game will be shown on ESPN.

This will be USC’s last game before the nasty second half of the schedule begins on October 14 at Notre Dame.

Pac-12 football overview: Arizona’s Jayden de Laura injured as Wildcats brace for brutal schedule

The good news for Arizona: The Wildcats are 3-1. The bad news: Look at their next four opponents. Their starting QB is also hurt.

The Pac-12’s big games last weekend overshadowed a notable set of developments in Palo Alto. Arizona beat Stanford, 21-20, but Wildcat quarterback Jayden de Laura got injured. We don’t know much about de Laura’s long-term prognosis, but backup quarterback Noah Fifita guided the team to the go-ahead score against Stanford and might have become a solid go-to option for coach Jedd Fisch.

Regardless of whether de Laura plays, and regardless of how good Fifita actually is, the next four games for Arizona are brutal: Washington, USC, Washington State, and Oregon State. Most people will pick the Wildcats to lose all four games. If they do, they will be 3-5 through eight games, with contests against UCLA, Colorado, and Utah still on the docket.

It will be very hard for this team to make a bowl game in 2023, even though it is 3-1 right now.

ACC Presidents meet to discuss the addition of Pac-12 teams and conference realignment, per reports

According to reports, the ACC Presidents met on Friday to discuss conference realignment and possibly adding Pac-12 teams.

The landscape of college football will never be the same as conference realignment has completely changed the game.

This past Friday was a crazy day that saw the Pac-12 lose five more conference members as they face the possibility of a full collapse. It started early in the day with Oregon and Washington being announced to join the Big Ten and later with Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State announcing they would join the Big 12.

According to multiple reports, the ACC Presidents met Friday to discuss conference realignment and possibly adding teams from the Pac-12. Per Ross Dellenger, the ACC “seriously explored” adding 5-7 Pac-12 schools as the Pac-12’s future is in question. It appears this will not happen, as the most attractive teams from the conference have already announced departures to the Big Ten, SEC, and Big 12.

News & Observer reporter Andrew Carter believes that a merger is now unlikely, as an ACC/Pac-12 merger would’ve cost ACC schools between $1-3 million per year in TV revenue, stating that “no remaining P12 school brought value to the league.” The remaining schools are Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford, and Cal.

There are rumors that the Pac-12 will now explore a merger with the Mountain West. Despite each ACC school’s entry into a Grant of Rights agreement with the ACC through 2036, Florida State brought up the ACC’s potential conference realignment issues on Wednesday. Even with the grant of rights, FSU has been working with JPMorgan to look for a possible way out.

Things are heating up in college football, and the ACC may be the next to be hit with realignment if things don’t play in their favor.

Big 12 welcomes three more schools, Pac-12 losses continue

The Big 12 welcomed three teams from the Pac-12 as conference realignment continues.

College football’s realignment continues as more news was released yesterday that the Pac-12 will lose three more teams.
The Big 12 Board of Directors has voted unanimously to admit Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and the University of Utah to join the Big 12 Conference. Another massive shakeup, the Big 12 will consist of 16 teams, Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah, and West Virginia. This will all begin in the 2024-25 academic year.

“We are thrilled to welcome Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark. “The Conference is gaining three premier institutions both academically and athletically, and the entire Big 12 looks forward to working alongside their presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and administrators.”

The Pac-12 is in a tough spot and will now have to consider a merger with the Mount West conference. With all of this going on, rumors around the ACC will continue to build.

Commanders season opener in 46 days: Washington’s best No. 46

Two pretty good running backs wore No. 46 for Washington.

Commanders Wire continues a countdown to the Commanders season opener for 2023 in 46 days. Who was Washington’s best player wearing number 46?

Frank Grant (1973-78) was drafted 332nd overall by Washington in the 1972 NFL draft. Grant (WR) started 44 of his 75 games in six seasons for Washington. He had 141 receptions for 2,374 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 16.8 yards per reception. Grant averaged 31.7 receiving yards per game, and in 1975 he made the longest touchdown reception that season of 96 yards.

Rickie Harris (1965-70) came to Washington having been undrafted out of Arizona. In his six Washington seasons, Harris started at all four defensive back positions, starting 61 games, intercepting 12 passes (1 TD) and recovering 8 fumbles. Harris was a good returner, leading the NFL in punt returns averaging 12.2 on each return in 1965. In 1969 Harris had the longest punt return in the NFL of 86 yards.

Ladell Betts (2002-09) was drafted 56th overall by Washington in the 2002 NFL draft. Betts, out of Iowa, was for all of his years a reserve running back who also returned kickoffs. Betts backed up Clinton Portis for the 2004-2009 seasons. But in 2006, with Portis injured, Betts started 9 games, rushing for 1,154 yards averaging a very impressive 4.7 yards per carry with four rushing touchdowns. He also had 53 receptions for 445 yards (8.4 per reception). In his eight Washington seasons, he rushed 776 times for 3,176 yards (4.1 per carry) 13 touchdowns and 164 first downs. He also collected 165 receptions for 1,505 yards (9.1 per reception) and three touchdowns. In 2005 Betts returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

Alfred Morris (2012-15) was drafted 173rd overall by Washington in the 2012 draft. Washington realizing Donovan McNabb was finished, traded him to the Vikings for this draft choice, which they wisely used to select Morris. Morris was a workhorse running back who mostly is forgotten to have rushed for 1,613 yards in the 2012 season. Morris also gained 1,275, 1,074 and 751 yards in his other three seasons in Washington. A Pro Bowler in 2013 and 2014, Morris, in his four Washington seasons, gained 4,713 yards (4.4 per carry), scoring 29 rushing touchdowns and 235 first downs.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Wildcats keep all of the same teams on the slate from what was the Pac-12 South, They catch a bad break missing Cal, but not having to play Oregon obviously matters. The divisions are gone, but getting Washington and Oregon State to come to Tucson is a plus.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Arizona Football Schedule What Really Matters

Last year the Wildcats had to deal with San Diego State and North Dakota State – both very, very dangerous – along with Mississippi State.

They came through just fine with good wins over the Aztecs and Bison, but they lost at home in a good battle with the Bulldogs. Expect 2-1 again with Northern Arizona and UTEP to go along with the trip to Mississippi State.

There’s a rough stretch of three road games in four weeks, but that’s followed by a week off. The team only leaves Arizona once – for Colorado – from October 14th on.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a bad schedule for a program looking to take a big step forward.

Of the five Pac-12 road games, going to Stanford, Colorado, and Arizona State are all more than manageable. If the Cats can improve a bit, beating Washington State is a possibility, too.

The schedule is decent enough to get to at least six wins and a bowl game. It’s going to take an upset somewhere, but Washington, UCLA, Utah, and Oregon State all have to make the trip to the desert.

If all goes well, this shouldn’t come down to the date with Arizona State to get bowl eligible.

Georgia DL Bill Norton announces transfer destination

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Bill Norton is transferring to the Arizona Wildcats

Former Georgia defensive lineman Bill Norton became the first Bulldog to enter the NCAA transfer portal earlier this offseason. Now, Norton is transferring to the Arizona Wildcats.

Arizona has had a lot of recent success in the transfer portal. The Wildcats added a commitment from Oregon linebacker Justin Flowe, a former five-star recruit.

Arizona finished the 2022 college football season with a 5-7 record. The Wildcats’ defense struggled at times and should be able to offer a lot of playing time to transfers.

Norton, a junior from Memphis, Tennessee, has 12 total tackles in his for season career for Georgia.

Bill Norton played high school football at Christian Brothers High School. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive lineman additionally played four years of basketball during his high school career.

Norton came to the University of Georgia as a talented four-star recruit. Norton had three tackles in 2022 and played in the SEC championship game.

The Bulldogs still have some solid depth at the defensive line position. Georgia has players like Nazir Stackhouse, Warren Brinson, Bear Alexander, Zion Logue, and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, who all have eligibility remaining and could return for the 2023 college football season.

Jalen Carter is expected to enter the 2023 NFL draft, but has not made an official announcement.

Bill Norton announced his commitment to Arizona via Twitter:
