Lions Wire gives draft grade for former UNC WR Antoine Green

Here is how Lions Wire graded the selection of former North Carolina wide receiver Antoine Green.

Former North Carolina wide receiver Antoine Green was the third Tar Heel taken in the 2023 NFL draft, going after Josh Downs and Asim Richards.

While Green had to wait until the seventh round to be selected, he landed with a Detroit team that gives him an early opportunity to impress and land a roster spot. Green will have to do his best to not only make the roster but earn some playing time as well.

As soon as the pick was made, our friends over at Lions Wire gave their analysis on the pick. And they seem to like the selection of Green.

Here is how Lions Wire graded the draft pick of Green:

If Green can expand his route tree, he can put his acceleration, explosiveness, and ball-tracking skills to better use, allowing him to be a formidable target in the Lions offense. Right now, the only way Green will make the roster is through special teams, replacing Quintez Cephus in that role. It will be interesting to see if he can progress and become either a WR3 or WR4 in Detroit.

Grade: B

Time will tell if Green works out or gets his chance in Detroit but at least he is getting that chance to make the most of it.

Draft grade for Detroit Lions selection of WR Antoine Green

The Detroit Lions finalized their draft class with the selection of WR Antoine Green, who can be a vertical threat for the Lions

Unless the Detroit Lions trade back up in the draft, the Lions final pick of the 2023 NFL Draft is North Carolina’s WR Antoine Green with the 219th overall selection. Also, it makes the Lions third consecutive pick from an East-West Shrine Bowl participant after Brodric Martin and Colby Sorsdal.

The Lions need receiver depth after the recent suspension of Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill, along with the release of Quintez Cephus. Also, the Lions only have Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown signed beyond next year, and he could provide the necessary depth behind them if he can crack the roster.

Green mainly lined up outside as the Tar Heels X-receiver, where he averaged 19.1 yards per catch, along with 15 touchdowns as he processes the true athleticism that could make him a deep threat in the Lions offense with the Williams out for six weeks. Even though he might not be the one making the play, he makes defenses stay honest, allowing for other routes to open up, giving way to a plethora of opportunities for his teammates. In addition, he can track the ball with precision and win one-on-one contested catches.

Unfortunately for Green, his production never took off in North Carolina with his lack of consistency and limited route tree. He relies too much on his speed to win the one-on-one matchups through his routes, and if that fails, he doesn’t recover to a point to make him a reliable target.

Grade: B

Detroit Lions take WR Antoine Green in seventh round

The Detroit Lions have drafted UNC football wide receiver Antoine Green.

Another former North Carolina Tar Heel football player has been drafted on Saturday. After Asim Richards was taken by the Dallas Cowboys earlier on Day 3, it was wide receiver Antoine Green’s turn to hear his name called.

The Detroit Lions wrapped up their draft by selecting the wide receiver in the seventh round at No. 219 overall. He becomes the third UNC player to be selected joining Richards and fellow wide receiver Josh Downs who was taken in the third round by Indianapolis.

Green spent five seasons at North Carolina, catching 90 passes for 1,710 yards and 15 touchdowns. In his first three years, he was buried on the depth chart as he had to play behind Dazz Newsome, Dyami Brown and Josh Downs.

But in 2021 he had a breakout year, catching 31 passes for 612 yards and 5 touchdowns. He followed that up with a 2022 season where he caught 43 passes for 798 yards and 3 touchdowns.

He joins a Lions team that appears to be the favorites to win the NFC North this year.

Lions select North Carolina WR Antoine Green in the 7th round

The Lions picked North Carolina wideout Antoine Green in the 7th round

With the 219th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions selected North Carolina wide receiver Antoine Green.

The Lions acquired the pick in an earlier trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for running back D’Andre Swift.

Here’s what I wrote about Green at the time of his meeting with the Lions,

The 6-foot-2, 201-pounder (measured at the Shrine Bowl) is coming off a senior season where he caught 43 passes for 798 yards in the Tar Heels’ high-octane passing attack, led by top 2024 NFL QB draft prospect Drake Maye. He missed four games with a leg injury but did more than enough to receive a Shrine Bowl invitation, where he excelled despite shaky QB play.

Mack Brown happy with turnout at UNC pro day

It was a successful pro day at UNC as Mack Brown details what stood out.

The North Carolina Tar Heels held their annual Pro Day, allowing NFL scouts to see the program’s talent up close.

All 32 NFL teams sent a representative to get a good look at the talent, which included Josh Downs, Antoine Green, Asim Richards, and Ray Vohasek. Scouts even got a chance to see quarterback Drake Maye, who many believe will be a top candidate for a chance at being the first overall pick.

Maye threw for both Downs and Green, putting it in the basket as the two wideouts showcased their abilities. Richards and Vohasek underwent numerous drills for scouts, including vertical jump, broad jump, and shuttle run.

As Richards’ performance brought applause echoing approval, Downs’ quick feet confirmed how much of a real deal he truly is.

It was a win for the program as draft stock raised for some and was confirmed for others. However, the biggest winner for Pro Day was Green. During a zoom call with media, Mack Brown spoke about Greens’ performance and what helped.

“They are all after Antoine Green, who ran 4.47,” Brown said. “That really got their attention at his height. So, he is in a better mix right now than he was before he went to combine.”

Brown continued to speak about the success of the Pro Day and what spoke volumes to him.

“We had all 32 teams representatives and 45 people there for five guys, and Noah was not working out because of his injury. So, that is pretty amazing that you have that many people from an NFL Pro Day show up for five guys, four of them working out.

The NFL draft will occur on April 27th and conclude on April 29th.

Lions meet with UNC wideout Antoine Green at the NFL Scouting Combine

Green is generally projected in the sixth or seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft

Antoine Green isn’t one of the bigger names at wide receiver in the 2023 NFL draft. The North Carolina Tarheel is hoping to raise that profile at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Green, a two-year starter at UNC, is one of the players who has been confirmed to have met with the Detroit Lions here at the combine.

I asked Green during his podium interview if he had met with the Lions. He confirmed he did during this week and stated he thought it went well.

Green said his favorite route is the post/corner option, but flattening it out to help create more space to run.

Green is generally projected in the sixth or seventh rounds of the draft.

2023 NFL draft: 6 potential Chargers targets who stood out at Shrine Bowl

Here are six players who should’ve drawn the attention of the Chargers at the East-West Shrine Bowl.

The all-star circuit began in Vegas for the East-West Shrine Bowl, where there were a handful of prospects making some of their final impressions to NFL evaluators.

The Chargers Wire staff was on hand throughout the week, catching all the action. So with that, here are six players who should’ve drawn the attention of the Chargers.

WR Antoine Green, North Carolina

Speed was plentiful at the Shrine Bowl, but no players showcased their jets better than Antoine Green over the course of the week. Green not only could cleanly separate in a footrace and stack his defender with ease during one-on-ones, but he also proved how friendly to the quarterback a receiver of his size (6-2, 201 pounds) could be. He routinely extended his long arms for catches away from his frame to high point balls above the rim and away from contention. Green was one of the better receivers at combatting press coverage from an aggressive group of cornerbacks, a testament to his experience as a fifth-year player. His current toolset has all the makings of a dependable field stretcher at the next level.

CB Kei’Trel Clark, Louisville

Clark, who played the slot this past season for the Cardinals, may have been overlooked by Shrine Bowl attendees. He has below-average size at 5-10 and 179 pounds, but Clark is able to compensate for that with his fine-tuned footwork, instincts, and ball skills. He completely jumped the gun on a couple of receiver screens during team period, an aspect that popped on his tape. Clark’s smooth ability to mirror receivers through their entire route pattern and time pass breakups was a feature across all three days of practice observed by the Chargers Wire staff. He was a top-five player in Vegas based off performance.

S Trey Dean III, Florida

Dean has the traits of a hard-hitting safety that you bet on: tall, fearless, and enough downhill speed to create some second thoughts. He capped off an impressive week in the back half of the secondary with a tip-drill interception in the Shrine Bowl game. Dean’s 6-3, 211-pound measurables were first utilized at cornerback before he swapped positions. Dean executed a variety of tasks and assignments at safety for the Gators, so competing one-on-one against the West team tight ends looked like a natural process for Dean. He is physical, oozes swagger, and teams will love the intensity he attacks the game with.

OL Atonio Mafi, UCLA

The Chargers need offensive line depth this offseason and Mafi’s presence could really boost the group. Just three years ago, Mafi was playing nose tackle for the Bruins. After making the position change to guard, Mafi still imposed his will, as he consistently moved people and held rushers at bay. That type of physicality was displayed throughout the week. The former rugby player was a bully with violent hands, great feet, and a strong anchor to limit every defensive lineman he went up against. In my interview with Mafi, he told me that the Chargers have been watching him closely since his first season in 2018 and really loved his tape.

DT Dante Stills, West Virginia

With Morgan Fox set to be a free agent, the Chargers could be in the market for an interior pass rusher, which Stills could serve as. Stills was one of the most energized players in the trenches. He raised eyebrows with his first-step quickness and twitchiness to penetrate, which blockers struggled to compromise for. He continuously fought with his hands and owned the leverage battle with great pop in his upper half. His motor ran nonstop and he was one of the most vocal players on the field.

EDGE B.J. Thompson, Stephen F. Austin

The Chargers don’t have a lot of valuable depth behind Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack and Thompson is a guy who I could see them targeting on Day 3 to help fulfill that. Thompson ran a 4.56 40, recorded an 11’3″ broad jump with a 40-inch vertical last offseason, and the freakish athleticism was evident. Thompson won with first-step explosiveness, speed, bend, and with his 82.5-inch wingspan.

2023 NFL draft: 10 potential Chargers targets to watch at East-West Shrine Bowl

The Chargers have used the East-West Shrine Bowl to find some of their players in recent years.

The annual East-West Shrine practices begin on Saturday ahead of the all-star game on Thursday, February 2nd, at 5:30 PM PT on NFL Network.

This showcase will feature several prospects the Chargers should have on their radar in the 2023 NFL draft.

In 2022, Tom Telesco selected two players that played in the game – Ja’Sir Taylor and Zander Horvath. Additional alumni include Trey Pipkins, Easton Stick, Cortez Broughton, and Justin Jackson.

With that, here are ten players the Bolts could be targeting:

UNC wide receiver Antoine Green back at practice this week

UNC football wide receiver Antoine Green is back at practice this week after missing last week with an upper-body injury.

Coming off of an uncharacteristic performance from the offense, UNC football could be getting one of its best playmakers back this week for the regular season finale.

Wide receiver [autotag]Antoine Green[/autotag] has been in and out of the lineup this year and missed the UNC loss last week to Georgia Tech due to an upper-body injury.

According to head coach Mack Brown on Monday, however, Green will be back at practice this week and should play this weekend against NC State.

Green’s injury occurred in UNC’s win over Wake Forest when he was hit late after the play resulting in a targeting penalty.

Green has dealt with an upper-body injury the entire season. The UNC deep threat injured his collarbone in a preseason scrimmage and missed the first three games of the season. He returned to the field against Notre Dame.

On the season, Green has totaled 30 catches for 678 yards and six touchdowns.  His 22.6 yards per reception this season ranks third in the NCAA. He has three 100+ yard games this season and four catches of at least 50 yards.

The senior wide receiver brings an entirely different dimension to the offense when he’s on the field so getting him back for the last few games of the season would be significant.

UNC has already clinched a spot in the ACC Championship game on Dec. 3 against Clemson.

Drake Maye, Antoine Green win win ACC player of week awards

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye and wide receiver Antoine Green were honored by the ACC after a big Week 9 game vs. PItt.

After a dominating performance on Saturday night against Pitt, a pair of UNC football players are earning Atlantic Coast Conference honors.

Quarterback Drake Maye and wide receiver Antoine Green were honored by the conference on Monday afternoon. Maye was named the Quarterback of the Week while Green was named the Wide Receiver of the Week.

Maye threw for 388 yards, completing 33 of his 44 attempts for five touchdowns in the game. He set new career highs in passing yards, completions, and attempts.

Meanwhile, Green caught 10 passes for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game, which were also career highs for the wide receiver. The duo helped UNC complete a comeback after trailing at halftime. They gained the lead in the third quarter and never looked back in the big win.
