Mack Brown happy with turnout at UNC pro day

It was a successful pro day at UNC as Mack Brown details what stood out.

The North Carolina Tar Heels held their annual Pro Day, allowing NFL scouts to see the program’s talent up close.

All 32 NFL teams sent a representative to get a good look at the talent, which included Josh Downs, Antoine Green, Asim Richards, and Ray Vohasek. Scouts even got a chance to see quarterback Drake Maye, who many believe will be a top candidate for a chance at being the first overall pick.

Maye threw for both Downs and Green, putting it in the basket as the two wideouts showcased their abilities. Richards and Vohasek underwent numerous drills for scouts, including vertical jump, broad jump, and shuttle run.

As Richards’ performance brought applause echoing approval, Downs’ quick feet confirmed how much of a real deal he truly is.

It was a win for the program as draft stock raised for some and was confirmed for others. However, the biggest winner for Pro Day was Green. During a zoom call with media, Mack Brown spoke about Greens’ performance and what helped.

“They are all after Antoine Green, who ran 4.47,” Brown said. “That really got their attention at his height. So, he is in a better mix right now than he was before he went to combine.”

Brown continued to speak about the success of the Pro Day and what spoke volumes to him.

“We had all 32 teams representatives and 45 people there for five guys, and Noah was not working out because of his injury. So, that is pretty amazing that you have that many people from an NFL Pro Day show up for five guys, four of them working out.

The NFL draft will occur on April 27th and conclude on April 29th.

Ray Vohasek suffers season-ending injury

UNC football defensive lineman Ray Vohasek has suffered a season-ending injury that will also end his career at North Carolina.

The UNC football program has lost a big-time contributor and leader on its defense for the rest of the season as defensive lineman [autotag]Ray Vohasek[/autotag]’s season and now career is over.

Vohasek had been dealing with an upper body injury the past few weeks. UNC head coach Mack Brown addressed the news this week.

“Very disappointed for Ray, he’s one of our best players and a great young guy. He’s such a great player and a tremendous leader,” Brown told reporters. “That’s a tough one for a senior that came back to help his team and have a chance to play in the NFL.”

Vohasek, a graduate student this season, transferred into North Carolina from College of DuPage ahead of the 2019 season. Ahead of his commitment to UNC, he was ranked a three-star recruit and the No. 1 junior college player in the state of Illinois by the 247Sports Composite JUCO ratings.

In his UNC career, he totaled 96 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He appeared in 41 games with 29 starts and was a two-time All-ACC Honorable Mention selection.

Before his injury, he had totaled 14 tackles and one tackle for loss.

Going into the second bye of the year, North Carolina’s defensive unit was starting to play its most consistent football of the season. Of that unit, Desmond Evans leads with 25 tackles and one tackle for loss. Kevin Hester Jr is second with 24 tackles.

Josh Downs headlines Athlon Sports’ All-ACC Preseason team

UNC football wide receiver Josh Downs headlines one of ten selections to the Athlon Sports All-ACC preseason team.

The UNC football program has landed ten players on Athlon Sports’ All-ACC preseason team for the 2022 season.

The publication released their annual preseason team for the conference, and headlining it for the Tar Heels is junior [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag]. The wide receiver was one of four UNC players on the list but the only to make the first team in the selections.

Downs had a breakout year in 2021, catching 101 passes for 1,335 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 13.2 yards per catch. He was Sam Howell’s go-to guy in UNC’s offense and that should be the case going into this season but with a different quarterback at the helm.

Joining Downs on the team are DL [autotag]Myles Murphy[/autotag] (second team), RB [autotag]British Brooks[/autotag] (fourth team), OL [autotag]Asim Richards[/autotag] (fourth team), DL [autotag]Ray Vohasek[/autotag] (fourth team), LB [autotag]Noah Taylor[/autotag] (fourth team), LB [autotag]Cedric Gray[/autotag] (fourth team), DB [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] (fourth team), S [autotag]Cam’Ron Kelly[/autotag] (fourth team), punt returner Josh Downs (fourth team).

Let’s hope there are more on this list at season’s end and they appear on the first team.
