2020 NFL Draft: Giants could target these Day 3 prospects

With the 2020 NFL Draft just around the corner, here’s a look at several Day 3 prospects the New York Giants could target.

There’s not much to do these days except analyze the upcoming NFL Draft and what we’ve done here is line up some possible Day 3 candidates for the New York Giants.

In both of the scenarios below, the Giants did not land Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons. In the first scenario, we passed on him at No. 4. In the second, he was gone before the Giants were on the clock.

Using The Draft Network’s mock draft simulator, here’s how the 2020 NFL Draft played out for the Giants.

Day 1

  • Round 1, Pick 4: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa

Analysis: Wirfs is a versatile, athletic lineman the Giants sorely need. They have a lot invested in Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley and they need some talent up front to help stabilize the trenches.

Day 2

  • Round 2, Pick 36: Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
  • Round 3, Pick 99: Nick Harris, C, Washington

Analysis: Queen would be a steal here and more than make up for passing on Simmons in the first round. Queen next to Blake Martinez in a 3-4 would be a nice tandem. Harris is a down-and dirty interior lineman cut from the Richie Seubert cloth. Giant fans will love him.

Day 3

  • Round 4, Pick 110: Julian Blackmon, S, Utah
  • Round 5, Pick 150: Isaiah Hodgins, WR, Oregon State
  • Round 6, Pick 183: Antoine Brooks Jr., S, Maryland
  • Round 7, Pick 218: Calvin Throckmorton, OT, Oregon
  • Round 7, Pick 238: Carter Coughlin, LB, Minnesota
  • Round 7, Pick 247: Levonta Taylor, CB, Florida State
  • Round 7, Pick 255: Mitchell Wilcox, TE, South Florida

Analysis: Blackmon is a pretty good fourth round find. I feel he’d start for the Giants right away. Hodgins was a sleeper, but his name has been rising. Not sure he’ll be around at No. 150. Brooks is a physical safety the Giants will find many uses for. Throckmorton would have to excel in camp to make the roster, but he’s got some ability. The final three players are all boom or bust types, but are all good athletes with solid football acumen.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft 4.0

A full mock draft three weeks out.

The Indianapolis Colts are just a few weeks away from the 2020 NFL draft, which is still scheduled to begin on April 23. As those weeks approach quickly, we will be looking at which prospects might be targets for Indy.

As we enter the month of April, we are getting somewhat of a clearer picture on how the Colts might go about their draft. It’s still a crapshoot, especially this year with everything going on, but it is still fun to take a look at some mock drafts and see what type of hauls the Colts might wind up with.

Here’s a look at another full mock draft for the Colts with the big event just under three weeks away using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator:

No. 34 | Laviska Shenault Jr. | WR | Colorado

With free agency mostly over and the Colts coming out of what was their busiest time on the open market since Chris Ballard took over, one thing became clear: the Colts are looking to invest heavily into the wide receiver position during the draft.

How that will fall remains to be seen but in this simulation, the Colts got a tried and true X-receiver. Shenault Jr. might have some concern with the injury that caused him to run a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash at the combine but if he’s available at No. 34, the Colts are going to have to think about choosing him over most other prospects.

Shenault is perfect for the West Coast offense of the Colts. He has the size, strength and explosiveness to work on the outside and his ability to beat the press makes him an ideal pick. He’s extremely savvy after the catch and makes defenders miss with ease.

If Shenault is added to the wide receiver room, the group just got a whole lot more interesting for 2020.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft: Late QB edition

What would a draft look like with a late-round QB?

The Indianapolis Colts made some big moves during the first week of free agency. From trading for a stud defensive tackle to signing a veteran quarterback to a one-year deal, those moves are likely to shake up the draft approach.

Though it is impossible to know for sure what the Colts will be thinking if and when the draft starts on April 23, we can run through some scenarios as to what those options might look like if they decide to use a certain process. For this, we will be taking the approach of a late-round quarterback after signing Philip Rivers in free agency.

Using The Draft Network’s mock draft simulator, here’s a look at a full seven-round projection with the idea of taking a quarterback late:

No. 34 | Cameron Dantzler | CB | Mississippi State

Following the release of veteran cornerback Pierre Desir, the position has become a massive need. The Colts have to find a viable starter on the boundary to replace Desir, especially considering the rest of the room isn’t ready to be starters yet.

Dantzler is a sticky coverage corner who has length and height to go along with physicality that should intrigue general manager Chris Ballard. There is still plenty of work to be done in Dantzler’s game, but he’s a solid fit for a zone defense. He had five interceptions and 20 passes defended over the last three seasons at Mississippi State.
