Jeff Hafley provides insight into Packers new defensive position coaches

Packers DC Jeff Hafley provided some insight on new defensive assistants Vince Oghobaase, Anthony Campanile and Derrick Ansley.

Joining Jeff Hafley on the Green Bay Packers defensive coaching staff will be Vince Oghobaase as the assistant interior defensive line coach, Anthony Campanile as the linebackers coach, and Derrick Ansley as the pass game coordinator, along with Ryan Downard returning as the defensive backs coach and Jason Rebrovich now as the defensive line coach.

Beyond the Xs and Os, the energy that this new-look coaching staff brings along with their ability to connect and build relationships with the players will be important aspects to helping this Packers defense reach its full potential.

“Hafley was a big part of the process in terms of getting the right staff around him,” said Matt LaFleur on Thursday, “guys that he not necessarily knew but guys that he respected, that he trusts are going to be able to carry out the vision for the defense, and I’m excited for you guys to get to know these guys.

“I think you’ll see a lot of high-energy coaches, and I think that’ll help our players bring out that energy that we need to be able to go out and compete to the best of our ability on Sundays.”

Oghobaase coached under Hafley at Boston College as the defensive line coach and the two were also on the San Francisco defensive staff together for two seasons from 2016 to 2017. Oghobaase also spent two years at UCLA with Chip Kelly.

Oghobaase will be coaching under Rebrovich, and the two will help with the transition for the defensive front, especially the edge rushers, as the Packers move from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3.

The play of the defensive line and edge rusher groups in 2023 was very hot and cold—the Packers’ front was either wreaking havoc or quite quiet. Finding that consistency from a pass rush standpoint, along with being better against the run will be top priorities. Some of which is hopefully helped by Hafley’s ability to simplify things for his defenders.

“Highly intelligent,” said Hafley of Oghobaase, “played the position, Duke grad, really good relationships with the players; really good teacher of fundamentals, technique.

“His players love playing for him, and he gets on them hard. He coaches them hard. He’s demanding. He holds them to a standard, but he’s got such good relationships and he’s such a good teacher, and he’s so smart. From a picture-wise, I think he has the ability to see it all. So, he’s really sharp.”

Anthony Campanile

Campanile, the new linebackers coach, was called a “star” by Hafley during Thursday’s press conference. Campanile has been the Miami Dolphins linebackers coach since 2020 and interviewed for the New York Giants defensive coordinator opening this offseason.

Hafley and Campanile know each other quite well but have never had the opportunity to coach together. As Hafley joked, it wasn’t Campanile’s profanity laced rant on “Hard Knocks” where he was introduced to him.

When in their base defense, the Packers will go from having two linebackers on the field to three. Quay Walker possesses that playmaking ability but consistently unlocking that potential will be a must for the new coaching staff.

Isaiah McDuffie could slot into the middle linebacker role, although I don’t expect that to stop the Packers for looking for potential upgrades this offseason. De’Vondre Campbell could end up as a cut candidate, leaving the Packers without a strong-side linebacker for their 4-3 defense.

“He’s one of the best, most loyal people I’ve ever been around,” said Hafley of Campanile, “and he’s one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around.

“I’m glad, very glad that he’s here. I think you guys will enjoy him. More importantly, I think the players are gonna love him and that’s really important as we build this staff.”

Derrick Ansley

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Ansley comes to Green Bay after spending the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. In 2021 and 2022, Ansley was the defensive backs coach, and the non-play calling defensive coordinator in 2023.

Most of Ansley’s coaching career has been spent specifically working with defensive backs, which includes coaching under Nick Saban at Alabama, along with two other NFL stops. Like Campanille, Ansley also interviewed for the Giants’ defensive coordinator opening this offseason.

As the pass game coordinator, Ansley will work with entire defensive backfield. The safety position is in-flux right now for the Packers, and one that will have to be addressed this offseason. If the Packers play more Cover-1 under Hafley, there will be more stress on that position, specifically for the post safety, tasked with covering the deep middle portion of the field.

The Packers also have to add to the cornerback position, specifically depth and finding a nickel option. This is a position group that could flourish under Hafley, given his experience coaching defensive backs, along with his heavier use of man and press coverages aligning well with the skillsets of the current cornerback room.

“Derrick and I knew each other from when I was a DB coach the first go around,” said Hafley. “Being at combines, getting to know him. Working the combine drills together. He worked with one of my good friends out in Oakland at the time, so we kind of talked quite a bit.

“Followed his career and kept in touch with him, and he’s got coordinator experience. So as we piece this thing together, he knows what it’s like to sit in my chair and he brings a lot of value and some different things. He’s been part of some different scheme, which I think will help.”

As Hafley said on Thursday, he believes that the Packers already have several cornerstone players on the defensive side of the ball. The task for him and the rest of these defensive coaches will be having that group reach its full potential and do so consistently.

With the Packers offense performing at an elite level late last season, coupling that with a regularly solid to good defense – not even a great one by any means – will make this a very formidable team to face.

“You ask about style of defense,” said Hafley, “the one thing that’s probably most important to me, even more so than Xs and Ox, is the guys, the coaches, we’re in this thing together. When you turn on the film, these guys gotta all running to the ball because they respect one another. They gotta play together and you gotta see that on the tape. That’s one of the biggest things that I’m gonna stress with this group, with this staff, and the style of play we’re going to play on defense. These guys gotta love playing with each other and they gotta love each other.”

Former Rutgers assistant Anthony Campanile hired by the Green Bay Packers

Anthony Campanile, a former Rutgers linebacker and assistant, is joining the Green Bay Packers.

Anthony Campanile is joining the Green Bay Packers where the former Rutgers football assistant will be on the staff of Jeff Hafley.

Hafley, who spent the 2011 season at Rutgers football as a defensive back, did not overlap during Campanile’s time at Rutgers (who spent four years with the Scarlet Knights beginning in 2012). Campanile most recently was with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent four years as the linebackers coach.

With the Packers, Campanile will be their linebackers coach.

Hafley is in his first season as the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator. He was with Boston College before he returned back to the NFL.

Campanile is a former Rutgers football linebacker who was part of head coach Greg Schiano’s first rebuild of the program. His family is football royalty in New Jersey.

Dolphins LB coach Anthony Campanile not returning in 2024, joining Packers

Miami’s LB coach for the last four seasons is out.

The Miami Dolphins have made a number of changes to their coaching staff since the season ended in early January, including parting ways with Vic Fangio and hiring Anthony Weaver to take his place and defensive coordinator.

During the hiring process, Miami appears to have lost another coach, as linebackers coach Anthony Campanile will not return to the staff in 2024, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson and Daniel Oyefusi.

Campanile, 41, had been with the Dolphins in the same role since 2020, surviving multiple head coaches and defensive coordinators. He was a candidate for the defensive coordinator role last year and this year and was passed up both times.

Since the hiring of Weaver, Miami is reportedly hiring former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry to take Campanile’s job as linebackers coach and a new role as run game coordinator (unheld in 2023).

The loss of Campanile is an unfortunate one, as he was clearly a team and fan favorite, especially after his highlighted segments on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this past season.

Campanile will likely find a new job quickly and have another opportunity to interview for a defensive coordinator gig in the near future.

UPDATE: According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, Campanile is set to join the Green Bay Packers staff under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Giants’ options for defensive coordinator beginning to dwindle

The New York Giants have been thorough in their search for a new defensive coordinator but their options are beginning to dwindle.

After an ugly falling out between head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, the New York Giants were thrust into the hunt for a new DC.

Their search has been thorough but thus far, has yielded no fruit.

Earlier this week, general manager Joe Schoen said he’d like to have a DC in place over the coming days but that clock is ticking.

Nearly a month after the Giants and Martindale “parted ways,’ the Giants are still without a defensive coordinator and following a recent spate of hirings, their options are beginning to dwindle.

Dolphins interviewed LB coach Anthony Campanile for defensive coordinator job

For the second year in a row, he gets in an interview for the defensive coordinator job.

With the end of the 2023 season just two weeks away, the Miami Dolphins are looking to find their next defensive coordinator after parting ways with Vic Fangio just one year after hiring him.

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Dolphins have already interviewed linebackers coach Anthony Campanile for the open position.

Campanile, 41, originally joined Miami’s staff in 2020 under Brian Flores and has held his position through multiple coordinators and a head coach change.

Prior to moving to South Florida, Campanile was coaching in the college game, spending a season at Michigan (2019), three seasons at Boston College (2016-18) and three at Rutgers (2013-15).

Before the Dolphins hired Fangio last offseason, Campanile also interviewed for this position, so he may have a leg up on some of the other candidates. He’s the second internal candidate that’s been reported – the other being outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik.

Tracking all of the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator interviews

Who the Dolphins are interview to replace Vic Fangio.

The Miami Dolphins, following the conclusion of their 2023 campaign, have parted ways with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio after just one season.

Now, before Miami fully dives into the process of preparing for 2024, they’ll need to find a replacement for Fangio to lead the team’s defense.

We’ll keep track of all coaches who are interviewing or being requested to interview for the position here:

4 defensive coordinator candidates for Dolphins after Vic Fangio’s departure

Some options for who could to take over for Vic Fangio.

The Miami Dolphins, just two weeks after being eliminated from the postseason, parted ways with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Wednesday, leaving a large hole in the coaching staff.

Fangio joined head coach Mike McDaniel’s regime last offseason and helped Miami’s defense survive through a number of injuries to key players.

Now, without the veteran coach, the Dolphins will be looking for a replacement. We put together a short list of options that Miami may look at in the coming weeks.

Giants request to interview Dolphins LB coach Anthony Campanile for DC job

Miami LB coach gets his first external interview request to be a defensive coordinator.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has done a great job putting together and keeping a strong coaching staff in South Florida over the past couple of years, and those coaches are starting to get looked at for new opportunities.

Offensive coordinator Frank Smith has already been requested to interview for the Carolina Panthers head coach job, and now, linebackers coach Anthony Campanile has received a request to interview for the defensive coordinator position with the New York Giants, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Campanile, 41, originally joined the Dolphins staff back in 2020 under coach Brian Flores, but he stayed on after Flores’ firing to work under McDaniel. After Miami fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer after last year, Campanile was interviewed for the position before it was ultimately given to Vic Fangio.

Campanile is from New Jersey, attended Rutgers and coached at two New Jersey high schools, including Don Bosco Prep, so it would be a natural fit with the Giants, who play in East Rutherford.

Giants request to interview Derrick Ansley, Anthony Campanile

The New York Giants have requested interviews with Derrick Ansley and Anthony Campanile for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

The New York Giants continue to seek replacements for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who parted ways with the team last week.

On Monday, they requested an interview with Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley.

The 42-year-old Ansley coached defensive backs before taking over as the Chargers’ DC in 2023. His unit finished 28th overall in total yards allowed (6,170) and 24th overall in points allowed per game (23.4).

Prior to his time in Los Angeles, Ansley spent 15 years at the college level with a stint as the Oakland Raiders’ defensive backs coach (2018) sandwiched in.

In addition to Ansley, the Giants also requested an interview with Miami Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile.

The 41-year-old Campanile has spent the past four seasons coaching linebackers in Miami. Prior to that, the New Jersey native spent eight seasons coaching at the NCAA level, including stops with Rutgers and Michigan, where he held the title of co-defensive coordinator.

Campanile broke into coaching back in 2006 at Fair Lawn High School before moving on to powerhouse Don Bosco Prep, coaching both their defense and offense during a five-year run.

3 things to know about Dolphins defensive coordinator candidate Anthony Campanile

Fans should be somewhat familiar with him already.

With their 2022 season over, the Miami Dolphins have fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, along with three of his positional coaches.

Head coach Mike McDaniel, general manager Chris Grier and company are now looking for a new coach to lead their defense. Four men have been requested to interview for this position – Sean Desai, Kris Richard, Vic Fangio and Anthony Campanile.

After spending some time learning about Desai, we’ll take the chance to get more familiar with Campanile.
