Report: Pete Werner had ankle surgery, Saints optimistic he’ll play again in 2022

The Saints are without starting linebacker Pete Werner after surgery on his injured ankle, but they’re optimistic he’ll play again in 2022:

Here’s another New Orleans Saints injury update. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that linebacker Pete Werner underwent ankle surgery after a recent injury, and the team is optimistic that he’ll return to play before the regular season wraps up. Werner has looked like the best player on the team at times this season, so it would be nice to get him back in the lineup. He exited Week 9’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens with an injury and was inactive for Week 10, but remains on the 53-man roster.

What’s odd is that Werner had surgery but wasn’t designated to injured reserve, but that’s been typical for the Saints this year. They haven’t done a good job of estimating when players would return from injured reserve — wide receivers Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry each missed five or six weeks before Thomas was put on ice for the year and Landry returned, while defensive tackle Malcolm Roach and safety P.J. Williams were both able to return as soon as their four-week term wrapped up. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore has been sidelined five weeks and doesn’t appear close to returning.

It would be a surprise to see Werner back in, say, a week or two so soon after going under the knife but stranger things have happened. The good news is that the Saints have gotten solid play out of their linebacker corps. It’s arguably the strength of their defense with Demario Davis leading the unit and Kaden Elliss filling in well for Werner. But we’ll keep an eye out for movement and any word on when Werner is going to be back out there.

Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny ‘crushed’ after serious ankle injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny has suffered another serious injury, fracturing his tibia against the Saints in New Orleans.

All reports indicate Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny fractured his tibia on Sunday during the team’s loss to the New Orleans Saints and he could be out for the remainder of the season.

This isn’t the first serious injury for the Seahawks running back, who has suffered from a finger injury, strained hamstrings and an ACL tear that ended his 2019 campaign.

Coach Pete Carroll said Penny was “crushed” when he spoke to him in the locker room.

“This has been a journey for him, and for us too,” Carroll told reporters during his post-game press conference. “Really, I fell in love with the fact that he emerged and showed us the great player that he is and what he can mean to the game and our team and all of that, and for it to come down to another setback – he’ll be back, he’ll be back – but it’s a setback that just breaks my heart.”

Penny had an impressive start to the season, even earning himself the FedEx Ground Player of Week 4 award for his performance against the Lions.

“He has been having so much fun, he has been so rewarded and so fulfilled,” Carroll continued. “He knows he belongs, he knows he can do it, and he knows he can be an impact in this league, so to lose that chance. It’s similar kind of to when Jamal (Adams) goes out. They put so much into it, and they care so much about it, then to have it taken away because of mishap, it’s unfortunate.”

Carroll and the Seahawks are now awaiting more tests on Monday to see whether or not Penny will need to undergo surgery on his left ankle.

Chiefs RG Trey Smith to play vs. Chargers in Week 2

#Chiefs RG Trey Smith was questionable with an ankle injury ahead of Week 2, but he will play against the #Chargers per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs got some good news during pregame warmups ahead of “Thursday Night Football.”

According to a report from NFL Network’s James Palmer, Chiefs RG Trey Smith will play against the Los Angeles Chargers. Smith suffered an ankle injury during Week 1 against Arizona Cardinals. He was a limited participant in practice on Tuesday and a full participant on Wednesday, but the team listed him as questionable for the game.

Now, we know that he’ll be suiting up and playing for the game.

It’s good that Kansas City has the offensive line at full strength for this game because they’re going against some tough edge rushers in Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. They’re going to need all the help they can get against those two players.

The Chargers also got some good news with CB J.C. Jackson, who had ankle surgery recently. He was questionable and will be playing his first game of the season according to Palmer.

It’s possible that Jackson could be on a pitch count for this game given the turnaround time here. Expect the Chiefs to target him in coverage and test him early on offense.

Marcus Smart still reportedly recovering from ankle injury in Boston Celtics’ 2022 postseason run

The Celtics veteran is close to 100%, but with a shorter offseason comes less time to heal.

There’s a downside to playing late into the playoffs, even if said downside is mitigated a bit by being deep in an NBA postseason. The lack of time to get one’s body right means the aches and pains accumulated while making such a deep run linger closer to the start of the next season, and in the case of some of the more painful injuries, may even carry over into the next season.

Veteran Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart knows this all too well as he continues to recuperate from a Celtics postseason run that had the team within two wins of an NBA title, Boston falling in six games to the Golden State Warriors after the Flower Mound native had put his body on the line for the Celtics several times at a considerable personal cost.

But now, in a recent interview with CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning, Smart shared that while he still feels some of those injuries, he’s closing in on a return to feeling himself again.

Seahawks S Quandre Diggs expected to be medically cleared in June

Seattle Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs is expected to be medically cleared from his ankle injury in June to return to football activities.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll took to the podium on Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis where he was able to provide a number of player injury updates ahead of the start of free agency.

Carroll believes safety Quandre Diggs will be ready to go by the start of training camp. Diggs suffered a dislocated ankle and a broken fibula in the Seahawks’ Week 18 win over the Cardinals to end his season

“I don’t think there is any doubt,” Carroll told reporters of Diggs’ ability to recover in time. “That’s all he’s thinking about. He’ll be back before then I would think. We really want to get him back.”

Diggs, who is set to become one of the team’s top unrestricted free agents if Seattle isn’t able to re-sign him, promptly popped on Twitter to correct the timeline for his return.

“Folks seen my injury and assumed my injury timeline 9-12 months like ACL’s or Achilles..” Diggs tweeted. “my recovery 4-5 months so that means I got 2-3 months left! Training camp start in August do the math!

ESPN’s Adam Schefter then tweeted a medical update per sources on Thursday to confirm the early summer timeline. Diggs is expected to be medically cleared from his ankle injury in June.

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson lands on injury report with sore ankle

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson popped up on the team’s Week-16 estimated Wednesday injury report with a sore ankle.

Here’s something you don’t see very often . . .  Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson popped up on the injury report.

Even though Seattle didn’t practice on Wednesday following the loss to the Rams, the team was required to issue an estimated practice participation report. Wilson was listed with a sore ankle but would have been a full participant had the Seahawks actually been on the field.

During his Wednesday press conference, coach Pete Carroll explained how Wilson ended up on the report.

“One of the times he got knocked down, a guy fell on his ankle,” Carroll told reporters. “That happened in the middle of the game, so he’s sore today, and it’s a short week so it could be a factor, but it won’t keep Russ from playing, I don’t think that’s the case at all. He should be all right.”

Wilson is expected to be ready to roll by Sunday’s game against the Bears at Lumen Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:05 p.m. PT on Dec. 26.

Chiefs gunner Chris Lammons exits game vs. Broncos with an ankle injury

#Chiefs ST ace Chris Lammons is questionable to return against the #Broncos with an ankle injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs could be without one of their most productive special teams players, budding star gunner Chris Lammons, after he sustained an ankle injury against Denver on Sunday. He was deemed questionable to return to the game, and it could potentially be a big blow to the team if this game comes down to one score.

Lammons has six tackles this season and has played in 78-percent of the Chiefs’ special teams snaps through their 12 games heading into this matchup. His presence as a gunner in punt coverage has been crucial to second-year punter Tommy Townsend’s success this season, and played a key role in Townsend’s selection as Special Teams Player of the Month in November.

Some people, including veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu, have speculated that Lammons could land a role on this year’s AFC Pro Bowl roster, casting votes for the gunner on Twitter:

While his absence will surely be felt, Kansas City can still rely on training camp star receiver Marcus Kemp and a rotating cast of other players to fill the void he leaves. Coached by one of the NFL’s most respected special team’s coordinators in Dave Toub, the unit has all the tools they need to maintain the stellar status quo that has been a boon to the Chiefs’ ability to dig themselves out of the hole they dug themselves earlier in the season.

The outcome of this week’s matchup against Denver is still in question as of the writing of this article, but Kansas City seems primed to win, potentially in Lammons’ honor, against their most bitter divisional rival. If it comes down to a long punt return for a touchdown or to set up the Broncos for a scoring drive, their lack of their best gunner could easily be the culprit for an inexcusable loss.

Jedrick Wills avoids major injury, is day-to-day

Browns fans can breathe a sigh of relief but what does ‘day-to-day’ mean for their left tackle?

Along with losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cleveland Browns also left Sunday’s game with concern about left tackle Jedrick Wills’ immediate future.

Wills was blocking on Jarvis Landry’s touchdown run when he stepped on a Chiefs player that had gone to the ground. Wills immediately went down and was helped off the field by trainers. Shortly thereafter, the Browns medical staff placed him on the cart and took him back to the locker room.

The team announced that they ruled Wills out for the game shortly following halftime and worry lingered that he could be out for much longer. Head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke to the media and calmed those concerns:

Day-to-day gives hopes that Wills would be available for Week 2’s home opener against the Houston Texans but Cleveland is likely to play it safe. Ankle injuries can linger if not properly cared for and the team has long-term goals in mind for 2021 and beyond for their 2020 first-round pick.

Injury updates on DeVonta Smith and Najee Harris ahead of 2021 NFL draft

Two former CrimsonTide stars suffered minor injuries late in the 2020 season, which could jinder their draft value. However, a report …

Numerous Crimson Tide stars are planning on entering the NFL by way of the 2021 NFL draft, most of those players will likely be selected on the first night.

Two offensive playmakers, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and running back Najee Harris, suffered late-season injuries.

Harris suffered a tweaked ankle, which some worried would hurt his draft value.

Smith injured his finger during the College Football Playoff, which is a crucial body part to a wide receiver.

However, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported today that Smith’s finger is healing well and Harris’ ankle has been checked out and he’s good to go.

There’s no telling where they will be drafted, but both are considered to be at or near the top of their respective positional classes entering the draft.

Matthew Stafford heads to the locker room with and ankle injury, he is Questionable to return

It only took one drive before Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford — who is currently dealing with a right thumb and rib injury — suffered yet another injury.

It only took one drive before Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford — who is currently dealing with a right thumb and rib injury — suffered yet another injury.

During the first drive, Stafford dropped back for a pass and once the ball left his hand, he drifted backward but didn’t see a Tampa Buccaneers linebacker behind him. Their feet got tangled up and Stafford twisted his ankle.

Stafford was tended to on the sidelines by trainers, but was unable to put any weight on his ankle and limped on one leg to the locker room.

The Lions announced that he is questionable to return at this time.

He was replaced by Chase Daniel on the second drive, but after five plays he was sacked and they were forced to punt.

The Bucs will get the ball for their third drive, after scoring two touchdowns on both their drives so far, and lead the game 13-0.
