Freshmen OL Blake Frazier and Andrew Sprague may be ahead of schedule

They’re both going to be the epitome of #Michigan men once their time is through. #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — While the Michigan football offensive line has struggled through parts of the year, it finally looked more like a vintage Wolverines unit up front last week against MSU. And though there have been issues figuring out both tackle positions as they’ve dealt with new starters and injuries, one thing is for certain — the future at the position will be bright.

Michigan has two young tackles who figure to play sooner than later given their talent. Though it usually takes a few years for offensive linemen to acclimate, offensive line coach Grant Newsome — who played early, himself — has liked the ascent of former four-stars Blake Frazier and Andrew Sprague — who he confirms have both been playing outside rather than inside.

“Both of those guys have been working at tackle. And both have been up with (the upperclassmen),” Newsome said. “They’ve been pushing those guys to be in the two-deep. And we think both are going to have very bright futures.”

But why have they both been able to progress?

According to Newsome, each has had his own learning curve, of course. Frazier was an early enrollee, so he got a bit of a lay of the land earlier than Sprague. For Sprague, it wasn’t just a late acclimation process as much as it was also battling through injuries he sustained previously.

But Newsome sees both right there, either in or just outside the two-deep along the offensive line — a great feat for each player, given how young they are.

“I think the cool thing with both those guys is how they’ve put in the work physically and mentally,” Newsome said. “Both have learned and kind of attacked the playbook, especially for Sprague, who was not here in the spring. And then both were battling through things in their own way. Blake was a guy who was lighter out of high school. So for him to come in and attack the weight room, attack with Abigail and her staff, and they’ve done an incredible job with him, the nutritional piece, to get himself up to a point where he now he’s weighing enough and he’s got enough strength that he can compete.

“And for Sprague, he was out battling a knee injury coming out of high school. For him to get back healthy, and it was midway through fall camp when he was able to start doing team reps, so the fact he’s able to put himself in the fringe two-deep already is a really, really good sign. So we’re excited about both their futures.”

Top five offensive tackles signed to the Big Ten during the early signing period

Here are the top five offensive tackles signed by by Big Ten teams during the early signing period. #B1G

The initial hype of the early signing period has died down, but there was a ton of talent to explore and so much so we are breaking it down by position. We have already dove into the top five quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and to sign with Big Ten teams and now we want to break down a position that Ohio State has struggled to recruit recently in offensive tackle.

The Big Ten has signed some heavy hitters at the offensive tackle position snagging six of the top 20 in the nation, but the unfortunate side of that is the Buckeyes didn’t snag any of them. Once again, The Team Up North earned a commitment from the top player at the position

Readiness Level

An absolute monster on the offensive line, Sprague will be joining a team that is already backloaded with talent up front. Per usual for an offensive lineman, he’ll need some time to develop and see the field. Expect him to make a run for a starting job in year two or three.

Scouting report

Via 247Sports’ Allen Trieu:

Prototype tackle frame. Basketball player who showed really good coordination and ability on the court as a sophomore. His junior year in football, he filled in and grew into his body more and started becoming even more of a dominant force. He finishes his blocks and plays with aggression. Has solid bend for a taller guy. Can still continue to work on his footwork and general explosiveness. Has a lot of raw ability and is trending in the right direction judging on the strides made between his sophomore and junior years. Either tackle side is a possibility at this time although right now, he has played more on the left side and is comfortable there.

Notre Dame offers massive 2024 Missouri offensive lineman

The Irish have offered the huge tackle

Even though [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] announced his retirement on Sunday, it is not going to stop head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] from recruiting the position.

The Irish head coach is leading the charge with Missouri’s [autotag]Andrew Sprague[/autotag], who tweeted Monday morning that he has received an offer from Notre Dame. The tackle is absolutely massive, standing 6 feet, eight inches and weighing 290 pounds.

Twitter reacts to Michigan football landing four-star Andrew Sprague

Check these out! #GoBlue

Michigan football continued its 2024 football recruiting hot streak on Friday afternoon.

The Wolverines rose to No. 2 in the 247Sports composite for recruiting classes after landing four-star offensive tackle Andrew Sprague.

The 6-foot-8 recruit from Kansas City Rockhurst (Missouri) is the 160th-ranked prospect according to the composite. He picked the maize and blue over other high-profile colleges, including Wisconsin, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and USC.

Michigan has three offensive linemen in the class, and Sprague is the highest-rated of the three. The Wolverines are looking to add four-star offensive lineman Blake Frazier out of Texas, too.

After Sprague committed to Michigan, Twitter erupted. Here are the best we could find.

Michigan football gets big-time four-star OT commitment

HUGE! (Literally.) #GoBlue

Michigan football continues on a torrid streak when it comes to reeling in high-profile recruits.

It had been quiet just before and after the annual spring game. That changed on Friday, however. One of the Wolverines’ high-profile targets made his pledge.

Less than a week after hanging out at The Big House with several current commits — running back Jordan Marshall, tight end Hogan Hansen and offensive tackle Ben Roebuck — 2024 Kansas City (Missouri) Rockhurst four-star offensive tackle Andrew Sprague decided he had seen enough. He took to social media on Friday to announce his commitment to Michigan football.

He’s the 11th pledge in the 2024 class.

Sprague is the No. 133 player in the country according to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings and appears to be choosing among Michigan, Notre Dame and USC. Among his offers are Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas A&M, Wisconsin.

He’s listed at 6 feet, 8 inches and 290 pounds, and is likened to the Buffalo Bills‘ Spencer Brown according to 247Sports’ Allen Trieu.

2024 Michigan football target announces commitment date

Fingers crossed! #GoBlue

Michigan football had a huge recruiting weekend ahead of the annual spring game, but one big-time visitor made it to campus for the spring game itself.

Several top-flight commits were on-hand, such as four-star running back Jordan Marshall, tight end Hogan Hansen and offensive tackle Ben Roebuck, 2024 Kansas City (Missouri) Rockhurst four-star offensive tackle Andrew Sprague was locked at the hip with those who already chose to go maize and blue.

It appears he’s seen all he needs to of his options. Sprague announced on Twitter that he plans to announce his commitment on Friday via Instagram.

4-star offensive lineman includes LSU in top 10

Andrew Sprague, a 6-foot-8 tackle from Kansas City, has a top 10 full of premier programs.

The Tigers have made the cut for a big player in the trenches — both in terms of status and stature.

Four-star 2024 offensive tackle [autotag]Andrew Sprague[/autotag], a 6-foot-8, 275-pound player from Kansas City, has trimmed his list to 10 schools, and LSU is included among that group. Coach Brian Kelly’s squad is joined by USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford, Oregon, Missouri, Penn State and Nebraska.

Sprague ranks as the No. 135 player nationally, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, and he’s also the ninth-best offensive tackle. The Rockhurst High School product’s recruitment is seen as fairly open-ended, as he has no Crystal Ball predictions from 247Sports while the Cornhuskers are a slim favorite per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine at 23.6%.

LSU sits at just 5.2%, but it also hasn’t hosted Sprague on campus for a visit since an unofficial trip to Baton Rouge back in November.

The Tigers currently have the No. 2-ranked recruiting class in 2024, but they still don’t have any offensive tackles committed. Landing a player like Sprague would be a huge win for this recruiting staff, but as you can tell from his top 10, there are a lot of premier programs calling.

Top 10 OT puts Oregon Ducks among top schools

4-star OT Andrew Sprague is the latest offensive lineman to include the Ducks among his top schools this week.

The recruiting momentum continues for the Oregon Ducks when it comes to the offensive line. After picking up a prediction to land a commitment from 4-star OT Bennett Warren earlier in the week, the Ducks have also landed in a number of recruiting cutdowns as well.

New offensive line coach A’lique Terry appears to be putting in work.

The latest player to keep the Ducks in the mix is 4-star OT Andrew Sprague, a 6-foot-8, 275-pound player from Kansas City, Missouri. Sprague is rated by 247Sports as the No. 133 overall player in the 2024 class, and No. 12 OT in the nation.

Sprague has yet to take a visit to Eugene, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make his way out to the west coast in the coming months to check out the Ducks.

Andrew Sprague’s Recruiting Profile

2024 four-star OT includes Penn State in his Top 10

Penn State makes the top 10 for this key 2024 offensive line target

It’s no secret that in recent years the offensive line group has been widely criticized by Penn State fans. The unit has certainly improved and in large part due to the level of recruits coming into the program.

On March 23, a highly coveted offensive lineman prospect cut his list of schools down to his top 10. [autotag]Andrew Sprague[/autotag] is a four-star player out of Missouri who is ranked 135th nationally in the On3 database. Nicknamed “Chooch,” he is listed as 6’8″ and 270 pounds.

Sprague included Penn State in his top 10 that has big named schools across the country. With one four-start offensive lineman in the 2024 class already committed to the Nittany Lions, signing Sprague could potentially set up a young core of tackles for the future.

It’s still early in his recruitment as can be seen by the long list of schools. The other nine are USC, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan, LSU, Stanford, Oregon, Missouri, and Nebraska.

According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, Nebraska is leading the way to sign Sprague with a 23.6% chance. Kansas is listed second with 14.0%, but they did not make his top 10.

The machine will need to be updated after he announced the schools he will be focusing on. Penn State was given a less than one percent chance to land Sprague prior to his announcement.

He recently spoke with On3’s Hayes Fawcett about the Nittany Lions saying, “Penn State is in the mix because of how they develop oline and their elite atmosphere and fanbase.”

This would be an awesome signing for Penn State. Getting multiple coveted offensive line talents in a single class would set the offense up for success in the future.
