Sooners jump to No. 6 in Amway coaches poll after Alabama loss

Oklahoma and Utah, who moved to No. 6 and No. 5 respectively in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The race is on.

With Alabama’s 48-45 loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl, the door has been blown wide open for Oklahoma and Utah, who moved to No. 6 and No. 5 respectively in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Without star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama fell to Auburn, effectively ending their playoffs hopes.

Just a few hours later, Oklahoma and Utah were both handedly winning games of their own, each claiming their case for the fourth spot.

The Sooners beat the then-No. 21 Oklahoma state 34-16, using a combination of offense and defense to put the Cowboys away.  OSU fell out of the top 25 of the Amway Coaches poll following the loss and the Sooners vaulted to No. 6.

Now No. 5 Utah defeated unranked Colorado 45-15, and ended their regular season at 11-1 along with the Sooners.

Next weekend, Oklahoma and Utah will face-off in their respective conference championships, and look to earn the fourth playoff spot.

The Sooners will face No. 8 Baylor, who jumped Minnesota and Alabama this week. Utah will face No. 13-ranked Oregon. The Big 12 title game could be an auto-bid for the fourth spot, but Utah will need to win big for the Pac-12 to have a chance at the national championship.

The Sooners and Bears face off at 11 a.m. in Arlington, and the Utes and Ducks play at 7 p.m. in Santa Clara for their respective championships.

Amway Coaches Poll: Notre Dame Moves Up

It doesn’t ultimately matter in terms of ending the 31 year drought of winning a national championship but Notre Dame’s resumes stacked up next to a few teams ahead of it is interesting.

Following their 45-24 win at Stanford, Notre Dame moved up in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll Powered by USA Today.

Just who then did they pass?

Well, to some Fighting Irish fans delight they moved past that team that embarrassed them on national television at the end of October.

The latest Amway Coaches Poll:

1. LSU

25. Air Force

Dropped out: Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech

Realistically we could see Oregon and Wisconsin both lose next weekend, both having tough matchups in their respective conference championship games. If they both lose we could see Notre Dame move into the top-12 at the conclusion of the regular season.

It doesn’t ultimately matter in terms of ending the 31 year drought of winning a national championship but Notre Dame’s resumes stacked up next to a few teams ahead of it is interesting.

Many reputation vs. actual production discussions to be had. We will discuss as the week goes on.

The month of November was not good to the Alabama Crimson Tide. After starting the season 8-0, the team dropped two out of its four games during Thanksgiving month, which were both to top rivals.

Included in the loss column is Auburn, who were able to escape the Iron Bowl with a 48-45 win over the Crimson Tide.

As a result of that loss, Alabama, once again, fell in the latest edition of the Amway Coaches Poll, which came out on Sunday. In that poll, they were ranked No. 9, still in front of the in-state Tigers (No. 12).

Other notable changes from the Coaches Poll include the following:

  • Wisconsin moved up from No. 14 into the top 10 after a decisive victory over Minnesota, who dropped to No. 15
  • Michigan dropped seven spots to No. 18 after suffering its third loss of the season, which was a blowout to arch-rival Ohio State
  • Virginia found its way back into the top 25 (No. 22) after beating Virginia Tech

And here is the top 25 from the Coaches Poll in its entirety:

1. LSU (12-0)

2. Ohio State (12-0)

3. Clemson (12-0)

4. Georgia (11-1)

5. Utah (11-1)

6. Oklahoma (11-1)

7. Florida (10-2)

8. Baylor (11-1)

9. Alabama (10-2)

10. Wisconsin (10-2)

11. Penn State (10-2)

12. Auburn (9-3)

13. Oregon (10-2)

14. Notre Dame (10-2)

15. Minnesota (10-2)

16. Memphis (11-1)

17. Boise State (11-1)

18. Michigan (9-3)

19. Iowa (9-3)

20. Appalachian State (11-1)

21. Cincinnati (10-2)

22. Virginia (9-3)

23. Navy (9-2)

24. USC (8-4)

25. Air Force (10-2)

Alabama’s regular season has wrapped, so it will be interesting to see where the Crimson Tide ends up in their bowl game.

Following an incredible, statement-making over the Minnesota Gophers on the road, the Wisconsin Badgers had a major move in the latest Amway Coaches’ Poll, powered by USA Today Sports, moving up four spots to No. 10 this week.

Overall, the Badgers (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) did what they had to do, and more, winning and earning a spot in the Big Ten Championship against quite possibly the best team in the country, No. 2 Ohio State. Up next, Wisconsin will travel to Indianapolis to face the undefeated Buckeyes (12-0, 9-0) for the conference title.

Minnesota (10-2, 7-2), who was dominated at home by the Badgers, took a nose dive with the loss and fell six spots to No. 15 after their home finale. The Badgers beat the Golden Gophers in their final game of the regular season, and of course retained Paul Bunyan’s Axe, a major part of the historic rivalry.

Wisconsin is still one of an impressive six Big Ten teams in the Amway Coaches’ poll. The Big Ten conference has proven yet again to be one of the toughest football conferences in the country, with four teams in the top 15 alone, and all six of the Big Ten teams just inside the top 20 of the poll.
