2023 NBA Mock Draft 1.0: An early look at the top prospects next year

Rookie Wire took a very early look at the next rookie class and some of the top prospects to monitor over the course of the 2022-23 season.

With the basketball world over a month removed from the NBA draft, many have started to look ahead to the next rookie class and which prospects may be available.

The class is headlined by French phenom Victor Wembanyama, who is considered one of the top prospects in recent memory. He has performed well in the top basketball league in France and looks to already be locked in as the top pick in 2023.

Elsewhere, there are several other prospects that will be worth monitoring over the course of next season. The rankings will certainly change but it can be a productive exercise to see how prospects moved up and down draft boards ahead of next year.

Rookie Wire took a very early look at the next rookie class and some of the top prospects to monitor as the 2022-23 season approaches in a couple of months.

Note: The order of the draft was determined by the reverse championship odds set by Tipico Sportsbook. The 2023 draft will only have 59 picks after the Bulls were stripped of their second-round pick by the NBA due to a tampering violation involving the signing of Lonzo Ball.

2023 NBA Mock Draft 1.0: Predicting both rounds, starting with Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson

What you’re about to read is the first rankings of a special draft class.

What you’re about to read is the first rankings of a special draft class.

There is a reason why several teams have shown a sudden willingness to enter a rebuilding phase. If there is a chance for your team to land one of the first picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, the reward could pay out handsomely.

Typically, when you read mock drafts published eleven months before the actual event, they’ll get called “way-too-early” in the headline. But for me, it’s not too early at all. By publishing this now, as things change, we can track all of the movement the players have once the season begins.

This mock draft is going to have flaws. It’s hard to predict what roles each incoming freshman will play for their new squad. When I published the first mock draft of the 2022 cycle, it wasn’t perfect. But more than 40 percent of the first round was correctly identified, and nearly 60 percent of the players predicted in either round are now on an NBA roster.

Some of these players aren’t going to pan out, and some of them will prove me wrong and warrant higher consideration once the season begins. Others will emerge from nowhere and plant themselves firmly on the radar for first-round consideration. When it comes to the draft, expect the unexpected.

Fortunately, we have some help from our friends at Cerebro Sports to help provide stats on the top high school and international prospects. Let those numbers guide the insights about each player.

Our order was determined based on reversed odds to win the 2023 NBA Finals. The teams outside the top 8 in each conference were considered lottery squads. Trades were pulled from this database at RealGM.

With all that in mind, here is how I’d project the 2023 NBA Draft:

Overtime Elite announced on Tuesday that twin brothers Amen and Ausar  Thompson have signed with the league and will be part of its inaugural season this September.

The news was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The five-star prospects, who are from Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, are widely considered two of the top guards in the class of 2022. Amen Thompson is the No. 22 overall prospect while Ausar is the No. 23 overall prospect, according to ESPN.

Amen is listed as a combo guard while Ausar is more of a traditional shooting guard. Each stands 6 feet, 6 inches. Together, they helped lead Pine Crest to the Florida 4A state championship this past season and were co-players of the year for Broward County Class 5A-1A boys.

They chose OTE over numerous schools, including Auburn, Arizona and Florida.

Amen and Ausar Thompson become the latest two prospects to commit to OTE, joining brothers Matt and Ryan Bewley, who signed with the league last week. Matt and Ryan were the first two players to commit to the startup league.

Led by head coach Kevin Ollie, OTE, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, provides a comprehensive accelerator for elite players’ professional careers. The league claims its year-round development program combines world-class coaching, performance technologies and other elements.

Every player is guaranteed a minimum salary of $100,000 per season, plus bonuses and shares of equity in Overtime. Players will earn revenue from the use of their name, image and likeness, and they also retain the right to sign direct sponsorships with sneaker companies.

The company announced last month it had raised $80 million in new funding from a group of investors including Jeff Bezos, Drake and 25 NBA players including Trae Young, Cam Reddish and Solomon Hill.
