Cowboys News: Rookie class signed, Jamal Adams saga ends

The entire 2020 draft class for Dallas are under contract. After nearly a year, the Jamal Adams to Dallas saga ends. News and Notes.

There’s been plenty of excitement and anticipation for the Dallas Cowboys 2020 draft class, and now they’re all signed to their rookie contracts. For almost a year, the speculation of All-Pro safety Jamal Adams coming to Dallas has been a very hot topic. Now, that scenario can finally be put to bed as the New York Jets have now traded him to the Seattle Seahawks.

Amari Cooper set several career highs in 2019, however, advanced stats say he could be the most improved player on the Cowboys based on production. One of the interesting questions about the Cowboys offense this season will be how will Mike McCarthy’s history of utilizing the fullback position coincide with Kellen Moore who rarely did in 2019. Potential harmful salary cap implications, three players who could rise up the depth chart, and how 2020 is an important year for the safety position and more are covered in the news and notes.

Cowboys News: Best yet to come for Amari, DiNucci report, what no preseason means

A look around the Cowboys’ landscape as the NFL demands face masks for fans and cancels the chance for unheralded players to make a mark.

Coming on the heels of the NFL cancelling the entire preseason, the league has deemed fans will be required to wear some sort of face mask before they are allowed into each stadium. This is assuming that there will even be fans at the games, and that certainly could change. This unique offseason presents new barriers for almost every team in the league, however, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, with a stable of new coaches and players, will face extra challenges as the season gets off to a quick start.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances the Cowboys currently face, they’ll still have to suit up and perform every Sunday. The offense is mostly set, aside from the backup wide receivers, and the intriguing position battles that will take place at left guard and center. We know Amari Cooper is great, but could more weapons and another year in the system allow him to get even better? Two new, big-name, defensive tackles should improve the other side of the ball, but how much impact will the additions make? Plus, a list of under-the-radar remains free agents that Dallas could potentially sign.

Cowboys News: Training camp dates set, Ezekiel Elliott in elite company

The Cowboys offensive line has reloaded but remained one of the league’s best.

Even with no procedures in place if there happens to be a COVID-19 outbreak on any team training camp dates for the 2020 NFL season have been announced. Since entering the NFL in 2016, Ezekiel Elliott leads all running backs in touches, rushing yards, and scrimmage yards. That elite level production has him in a rare class when it comes to the first four years of any running backs career in league history.

The Cowboys traded back into the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft to draft center Tyler Biadasz whose upside could see him follow the path of the recently retired Travis Frederick, who also played his college ball at Wisconsin. Since 2018, the Cowboys have invested a lot of resources in the wide receiver position and it’s given them one of the league’s most dangerous offenses. The strict media guidelines for training camp, what position the Cowboys need to improve in 2021, and how the contracts of Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton may see the Cowboys keep three quarterbacks on the roster this season is covered in the news and notes.

Eagles vs. Cowboys lands in the top-5 of a ranking of the NFL’s top rivalries entering the 2020 season

Eagles vs. Cowboys is No. 4 in a ranking of NFL’s top rivalries

[jwplayer DTY5I1d9]

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles have a historic hatred for one another that has transformed the NFL landscaped and made the matchups must-see TV.

The two teams are now linked by franchise signal-callers and Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott will be forever compared because of their selections in the 2016 draft. CBS Sports recently ranked the top-five rivalries heading into the 2020 NFL season and the NFC’s most meaningful duo landed at No. 4 on the list.

4. Cowboys vs. Eagles
An historically great rivalry, the fanbases of the Eagles and Cowboys downright just don’t like each other. It’s been that way since the 1970s, when the Cowboys had their way with the Eagles before Philadelphia flipped the script during the 1980 NFC title game. The Eagles’ upset win over the Cowboys that day further elevated the bad blood between the two franchises and fan bases, and it’s a dislike that continues to fester to this day.

Along with the history, these are two teams that are trying to reclaim their place as the NFL’s best team. Dallas (Jerry Jones, to be more specific) is desperately trying to win their first championship since the franchise’s glory years of the 1990s. Conversely, the Eagles, now over two years removed from hoisting their first Lombardi Trophy, are looking to capitalize on their Super Bowl window after falling just short of expectation the previous two seasons. The NFC East should come down to these two teams, which should make for two very compelling games in 2020.

Buccaneers vs. Saints was No. 5 thanks to the arrival of Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, while Ravens vs. Titans are No. 3 on the list thanks to the huge 28-12 Tennessee upset of top-ranked Baltimore in AFC playoffs last year.

49ers vs. Packers was No. 2 on the list while 49ers vs. Seahawks and the battle for the NFC West title.

ESPN: Cowboys’ offensive weapons ranked tops in NFC

The combination of Ezekiel Elliott plus a lethal trio of WRs puts Dallas in the top 3 of all NFL clubs in terms of skill-position players.

The Dallas Cowboys are racing toward the deadline to get franchise quarterback Dak Prescott inked to a long-term contract. At stake is nothing less than the future of the sport’s flagship team for the next five years or more.

Get Prescott signed, and the Cowboys are an immediate contender for the next half-dozen Super Bowls. Let July 15 pass without a deal, and Prescott is still wearing the star for 2020 for sure… but anything beyond that is a dicey proposition. And according to ESPN, that could be wasting an impressive- and dramatically improved- array of offensive talent that the organization has put into place around Prescott over the past two seasons.

Bill Barnwell, staff writer for the Worldwide Leader, has put each team’s roster under the microscope and ranked all 32 clubs based on the skill-position talent surrounding their quarterback. While he emphatically points out that his list does not factor in the impact of the quarterback, offensive line, or scheme, it’s still an accurate barometer of how good a team may be.

Barnwell places the Cowboys third-best in the NFL, and tops in the NFC. That’s way, way, way up from a dismal ranking of 30th in 2018.

Only the Chiefs and Browns are slotted higher on the list, ranked 1 and 2, respectively.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott looks to be a force once again for the Cowboys. Now the league leader in rushing yards per game over three of the past four seasons has complementary threats in the receiving corps, preventing defenses from being able to stack the box against him.

Investing in the playmaking positions was the key, Barnwell says. Of course, trading for Amari Cooper turned out to be a shrewd move. But the rapid ascension of Michael Gallup has been just as important. “The only third-round pick to produce more yards in his second season as a pro is Mike Wallace,” Barnwell writes, “with Gallup coming in ahead of guys such as T.Y. Hilton, Kenny Golladay, and Terrell Owens.”

Add to the mix the highly-touted rookie CeeDee Lamb, “who would profile as the No. 1 wideout for a handful of teams right now,” and Dallas is loaded at wide receiver.

The only reason the Cowboys don’t rank higher than third, Barnwell nitpicks, is having a less-than-elite name playing tight end. New starter Blake Jarwin “was productive in a small sample last season, ranking eighth in the league in yards per route run and 11th in yards per target. There’s no way he is going to see significant volume with the other four guys in this offense ahead of him, but if Jarwin can maintain that sort of efficiency, Dallas won’t have any weaknesses.”

Unless, that is, they decide to rely on a backup rifleman to handle that stockpile of next-gen firepower as their long-range plan of attack.

Better than average: Wide Receivers

The best WRs compared to each other.

“Better than average” is an annual measurement of how players did the previous season. Not just their total yardage or fantasy points. What this considers is which player posted the most fantasy points against a particular defense. Who had a Top-4 or a Top-8 performance? With 16 games for each defense, anyone that scored in the best eight against them for that position was “better than average.”

This considered a standard fantasy performance scoring with a reception point for running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. The “BTA” score adds up the instances of whether a score was the highest, in the best four or eight allowed to the position by a defense. In that way, a No. 1 showing gets counted three times (as the No.1, in the Top-4 and the Top-8).

This is actually more accurate than considering total fantasy points. This indicates how well a player did versus all others that faced the same defense. Each defense only gives up one instance of a No. 1.

DeVante Parker was a surprise, even to any Dolphins fan, when he suddenly caught fire after years of mediocrity but then again, defenses weren’t exactly freaking out when they faced Miami. To have multiples of any category is impressive considering there are at least 64 starting wideouts in the NFL in any non-bye week.

Davante Adams slid down in this metric and while Chris Godwin did well, consider that Mike Evans played injured and ended on injured reserve but led the NFL with three Top-1 performances. Michael Thomas turned in a ridiculous year with 13 games in the Top-8 allowed by that defense. For wide receivers, those Top-8 are the most telling given how many wideouts a defense faces in a season. DJ Chark, Robert Woods, and Allen Robinson are all relatively young players improving their worth to their teams.

Julio Jones and Amari Cooper fell in this measurement compared to their total points for the season.

Here are just the No. 1 performances allowed by a defense (a total of 32).

Cowboys News: Tyron Smith ranked top OT, Ezekiel Elliott overpaid?

The Cowboys seven-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith was ranked the NFL’s top offensive tackle by ESPN. Based on average annual salaries and recent production Ezekiel Elliott was named the Cowboys most overpaid player.

Even as he continued to battle nagging injuries in 2019, Dallas Cowboys star left tackle Tyron Smith made his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl. He was recently ranked the top offensive tackle in the NFL by ESPN, but there’s a few names missing from the list. Ezekiel Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million dollar extension before the beginning of last season and finished in the top-five in several statistical categories. However, based on average annual salary and recent production he was surprisingly named the Cowboys’ most overpaid player.

The July 15 deadline for Dak Prescott to sign a long-term deal is rapidly approaching, but according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are willing to be patient until the end. Amari Cooper is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, yet opinions on him vary amongst league executives. CeeDee Lamb’s most effective route, how Amari Cooper could be primed for his best season, and three things you can learn from preseason rankings are covered in the news and notes.

Terry McLaurin ranked as No. 1 wide receiver in the NFC East

Though he has just one year of experience, McLaurin is being ranked ahead of Amari Cooper as the best WR in the division.

At the start of the 2020 NFL offseason, Washington tried to make a massive move in free agency by working to lure Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper away from his NFC East team and join theirs instead. He ended up turning the $100+ million offer down, but if it had gone through, Washington would hold onto the No. 1 and No. 2 receivers in the division — Terry McLaurin and Cooper, in that order.

You read that ordering right.

Recently, Pro Football Focus forecasted that McLaurin, Washington’s second-year WR who had a blistering rookie season, would be the best pass-catcher in the NFC East going forward, out-ranking players like Cooper, Michael Gallup, Alshon Jeffery, CeeDee Lamb, and Nelson Agholor. The list may not seem as impressive as the initial statement once you break it all down, but when you consider the fact that McLaurin is receiving this type of praise after just one year in the league tells you all you need to know.

“Terry McLaurin was the most valuable wide receiver in the NFC East last season, and there’s a reason,” PFF’s George Chahrouri said on the PFF Forecast. “This guy can go downfield. He can catch and run with it. He was the highest-graded rookie last year, better than [Tennessee Titans WR] A.J. Brown.”

The highest-graded rookie who also has a quarterback that’s looking to take massive strides down the field now that he has a solid coaching staff to lean on. If the right steps are taken, there’s no telling how high McLaurin’s star can go in the coming years.
