Panthers OLB Amaré Barno designated to return to practice

The Panthers have opened up the practice window for OLB Amaré Barno.

The Carolina Panthers may be getting back even more firepower off the edge.

As announced by the team on Monday morning, outside linebacker Amaré Barno has been designated to return to practice. The 25-year-old defender, who tore his ACL in last year’s Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers, has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of the regular season.

Barno was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The Blythewood, S.C. native has since gone on to appear in 24 games for the Panthers, amassing 30 combined tackles (three for a loss) and 2.0 sacks.

The Panthers, who have been struggling to maintain a consistent rotation of pass rushers in 2024, just got outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum back from his quad injury. Wonnum made his team debut in the Week 10 win over the New York Giants, where he recorded six tackles and a sack.

Panthers expecting 3 players to return to practice this week

Panthers HC Dave Canales said he’s expecting a trio of players to return to practice this week.

Monday was a rather sobering day for the Carolina Panthers, who will be forced to deal with a couple of more difficult injuries.

First, the team learned that they’ll have to finish the 2024 campaign without captain and longtime linebacker Shaq Thompson—who tore his Achilles tendon in yesterday’s 34-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. They also found out about a setback to their other starting inside ‘backer, as Josey Jewell could be down for a couple of weeks due to hamstring and groin issues.

But some much-needed reinforcements could soon be on the way

After filling the media in on Thompson and Jewell this afternoon, head coach Dave Canales was asked about this week’s availability of the players who began the season on injured reserve.

“Yeah, expecting Dane [Jackson], Jaden [Crumedy], Ian Thomas to get out there, be back on the practice field,” Canales replied. “Get a new set of eyes on these guys. We talk about competition all the time, and I love what it brings to our group—just being able to get out there, play fast, guys who are excited to get back to football.

“But again—they gotta be out there, they gotta handle the load. Still, with all that timing, they haven’t been on the field with us running our plays and all that. So this is a great opportunity for those guys to get rolling and for us to get a look at them.”

With four weeks now in the books, players who began the campaign on injured reserve are eligible to return to practice. Once they are officially back on the practice field, the Panthers will have 21 days to return them to the active roster.

If they are not added to the active roster within that 21-day window, they are no longer eligible to play for the remainder of the season.

Along with Jackson, Crumedy, Thomas, other notable Panthers who are on the shelf include rookie running back and second-round pick Jonathon Brooks as well as outside linebackers D.J. Wonnum and Amaré Barno.

Panthers HC Dave Canales: Jonathon Brooks, others ‘really close’ to returning

Panthers HC Dave Canales noted that rookie RB Jonathon Brooks and several others are “really close” to returning to practice.

A few important reinforcements might be coming at just the right time for the revived Carolina Panthers.

Head coach Dave Canales offered up some injury updates following Wednesday’s practice, their first official session ahead of this weekend’s matchup against the 0-3 Cincinnati Bengals. After cleaning up the details on this afternoon’s injury report, he was asked about the progress of the players who began the 2024 campaign on injured reserve.

“We’re ramping them up, they’re all in the final stages of the evaluation process,” Canales replied. “Some last couple of hurdles for them to clear before we feel like we can put them out there in practice. But they’re all really close.

“Jonathon [Brooks], D.J. Wonnum, Dane Jackson, [Amaré] Barno, all those guys. They’re trending in the right direction. Jaden Crumedy as well. So the guys are there looking really strong. Again, they’re kinda in those final stages. I kinda just wanna leave it at that. But we’re getting close to being able to open the window for those guys.”

Brooks, the team’s second-round pick from this year’s draft, tore his ACL last November while still playing for the University of Texas. He did not fully participate throughout offseason practices and missed the entirety of preseason play.

Wonnum, a free-agent signee from the spring, also has yet to receive the green light. The former Minnesota Viking was projected to be the defense’s second starter at the outside linebacker position next to fellow South Carolina Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney.

After Week 4, players who started the year on injured reserve will have five weeks to return to practice. Once they return, they’ll have 21 days to be activated to the 53-man roster. If either of the deadlines are not reached, the player must miss the remainder of the campaign.

Panthers OLB Amaré Barno to start 2024 season on PUP list

Panthers OLB Amaré Barno (knee) will start the regular season on the shelf.

The Carolina Panthers have been busy stocking the shelf on Tuesday.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the team is set to place outside linebacker Amaré Barno on the reserve/physically unable to perform list—joining fellow outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum. The Panthers are also reportedly putting rookie running back Jonathon Brooks on the non-football injury list to start the regular season.

Barno was moved to injured reserve in December after sustaining a knee injury at the end of the 2023 campaign. He, like Wonnum, has spent the entire offseason recovering from the setback—having yet to fully participate in a practice this year.

Carolina selected Barno in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The speedy Virginia tech product has gone on to appear in 24 games since, amassing 30 total tackles and 2.0 sacks with one start.

The 25-year-old will now have to miss at least the first four games of the 2024 season.

Panthers 2024 roster cuts tracker

Keep it here as we track each move the Panthers make in getting to their initial 53-man roster

Despite the difficult decisions that lie ahead, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t shying away from the challenge of getting down to his very first 53-man roster.

“Yeah, it’s hard. And I’m excited for it,” he told reporters after last Wednesday’s practice. “When you respect and regard the whole unit and you’re kinda bringing everybody up at the same time—with the teaching, with the practices, the drill work and all those things as we improve everyone—it makes the decisions harder and harder.

“So I’m really excited about doing this with Dan [Morgan], with Brandt [Tilis], with the coaching staff. We’ve kinda had our touch-points throughout camp to evaluate where we’re at right now, and then we’ll have that culmination after we get through this last game.”

Well, they got through that game—besting the host Buffalo Bills in their final preseason outing of the summer on Saturday. So now, the “excitement” begins.

Panthers place 2 more players on active/PUP list before start of training camp

The Panthers have now placed six players on the active/PUP list ahead of training camp.

Two more Carolina Panthers won’t be ready for the start of training camp.

As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, receiver Cam Sims and rookie cornerback Chau Smith-Wade have been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. They will join wideout Jalen Coker, offensive tackle Yosh Nijman and outside linebackers D.J. Wonnum and Amaré Barno—all of whom were also shelved on Friday.

Smith-Wade was selected by the Panthers in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. Given Carolina’s lack of depth at the cornerback position, the Washington State standout could figure into the defense’s plans right away in 2024.

“With this whole pre-draft process, I’ve been talking to coaches and a lot of scouts,” Smith-Wade said after being selected in April. “They see me as a nickel, but I wouldn’t limit myself to just one position. I see myself being versatile in this league. I see myself making plays at corner, I see myself making plays at nickel, perhaps even safety. So I would never just limit myself to just one position when I know I can be multiple.”

He is now the second of Carolina’s 2024 draftees who hasn’t received clearance for the start of camp—with second-round running back Jonathon Brooks having already been placed on the active/non-football injury list yesterday.

Panthers place 4 players on active/PUP list ahead of training camp

The Panthers are temporarily sidelining a handful of players to begin training camp.

Jonathon Brooks wasn’t the only Carolina Panthers player denied of clearance for the start of training camp.

The team announced on Friday that four players have been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. That group includes rookie wide receiver Jalen Coker, offensive tackle Yosh Nijman and outside linebackers D.J. Wonnum and Amaré Barno.

Wonnum is the most high-profile placement of the bunch. The Panthers signed the 26-year-old to a two-year, $12.5 million deal this offseason and are expected to start him alongside fellow University of South Carolina Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney in the middle of the defense.

Head coach Dave Canales previously updated reporters on the status of Wonnum, who is still recovering from the quadricep tear he sustained late last season.

“Just working through some different things,” Canales said of Wonnum back in early June. “He had some complications . . . he had a quadricep tendon rupture there. And so he had a repair and there was some different things they had to clean out. So it’s kinda just like this back-and-forth trying to get him as healthy as we can so we can get him on the field and get him back to full speed. So he’s still kinda working through some of those things.”

As is the case with Brooks—who was placed on the active/non-football injury list—Wonnum, Barno, Nijman and Coker can be activated at any time.

Panthers place Amaré Barno on injured reserve

The 2023 season is over for Panthers OLB Amaré Barno.

The 2023 season wasn’t going away without claiming yet another Carolina Panthers defender.

As announced by the team on Wednesday afternoon, outside linebacker Amaré Barno has been placed on injured reserve. With just two games remaining, the move officially ends the 24-year-old’s second pro campaign.

Barno injured his knee in this past Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. He was carted off the field after recording just two snaps on special teams.

A sixth-round pick in 2022, Barno has appeared in 24 games for the Panthers over the last two seasons. He played in each of the team’s 15 games in 2023,  including a start in the Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The majority of Barno’s snaps this season came on special teams, where he logged 232 looks. In his 189 defensive snaps, he—per Pro Football Focus—recorded eight total pressures and seven stops.

Barno is now one of six Panthers defenders currently on injured reserve.
