Have Seahawks addressed pass rush without Jadeveon Clowney?

The Seattle Seahawks addressed the pass rush in free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft but is it enough without defensive endJadeveon Clowney?

The Seattle Seahawks have kept the door open on the possibility of re-signing free agent Jadeveon Clowney but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to improve the pass rush should he choose to play elsewhere.

Seattle brought back two familiar faces in free agency – Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa – to add a veteran presence along the defensive line.

Next, the Seahawks selected two defensive ends and a linebacker in the 2020 NFL Draft with the hopes of beefing up their defensive capabilities.

First-round pick, Jordyn Brooks, joins veterans Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright in an already-stout linebacker room. Second-round selection, former Volunteers defensive end Darrell Taylor, is expected to contribute immediately as soon as the team takes the field. Fifth-rounder Alton Robinson will also contribute to the Seahawks’ pass-rush efforts and rotation.

“We really did look at the issue of we weren’t happy with the production of our pressure that we put on last year and so we went after it,” coach Pete Carroll said after the draft. “Every move that we’ve made has addressed that and I think that we have the depth that can really help us keep guys fast and fresh and get a really good rotation going . . . We’ve addressed an issue and now we have to make it come to life.”

The Seahawks now have the salary cap room to pursue Clowney if they choose, but it’s clear Seattle is making sure it is prepared to move on without him.

Could Seahawks pursue free agent defensive end Taco Charlton?

The Miami Dolphins just released defensive end Taco Charlton, could he be a free agent target for the Seattle Seahawks?

When the Miami Dolphins announced the release of 25-year-old defensive end Taco Charlton on Thursday, it instantly prompted fans and media members to speculate that the Seattle Seahawks would show interest.

After all, coach Pete Carroll loves his former first round picks, and Charlton is coming off the best season of his three-year career.

Charlton was a first round pick in 2017, going 28th overall to the Cowboys after a stellar senior season at Michigan. He ended up serving in a backup role in Dallas for his first season, and after a mediocre year in 2018 he was released early in the 2019 campaign, where he caught on with Miami.

The Dolphins managed to get Charlton straightened out somewhat, as he recorded a career-high five sacks and two forced fumbles in just 10 games played.

However, after drafting three defensive linemen in the 2020 NFL draft, Miami must have found Charlton expendable – and now he finds himself looking for his third NFL team in his first four professional seasons.

After adding two defensive ends in the draft – Darrell Taylor and Alton Robinson – as well as free agents Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa, it’s fair to wonder if Seattle even has room for Charlton on the roster.

While he’s not a substitute for a Jadeveon Clowney or Yannick Ngakoue type addition, Charlton is certainly worth bringing into camp and seeing if the improvements in his numbers are worth buying into.

After all, 25 year olds coming off five sack seasons – which would have led the Seahawks last year – don’t grow on trees, and there’s plenty of room for improvement at the back of Seattle’s defensive line pecking order.

Seahawks could still pursue Jadeveon Clowney if opportunity presents

Despite selecting two defensive ends in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks haven’t ruled out continuing to pursue Jadeveon Clowney.

The Seahawks made it clear they were no longer going to wait around for free agent Jadveon Clowney to make his decision regarding re-signing with the team when Seattle selected two defensive ends in the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, Coach Pete Carroll and John Schneider conceded they weren’t ruling out pursuing Clowney in the future should the opportunity present itself.

“Just staying in touch with him, he’s kind of patient with the time frames that are out there and all that,” Carroll said after the draft. “But he knows that the Seahawks are a place that he had some success and that he had a really good time and he contributed to our club and all of that. That’s a pretty good feeling for him being out there still. John will take care of it. If there’s an opportunity that makes sense, we’ll dive back in and pursue it.”

The Seahawks added Darrell Taylor out of Tennessee in the second round of the draft and Syracuse’s Alton Robinson in the fifth. Seattle had signed Benson Mayowa and Bruce Irvin back to the squad during free agency.

So for now, until Clowney makes his decision official, Seattle will move on without him but Carroll and Schneider will be keeping their options open.

2020 Seahawks draft class: Meet all 8 of Seattle’s selections

A look at all eight of the Seattle Seahawks selections in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Seattle Seahawks selected eight new players to the roster throughout the seven rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. Here’s a look at the complete 2020 Seahawks draft class with links to bios, analysis and more.

Alton Robinson newest Seahawk who must prove he’s overcome adversity

Alton Robinson, a Seahawks 2020 NFL draft pick, is getting another shot after nearly losing his college career due to a robbery charge.

Defensive end Alton Robinson’s college football career nearly ended before it even began. Just two weeks after he committed to Texas A&M he was charged with second-degree robbery over an alleged struggle with his girlfriend and the theft of her purse and cell phone.

His legal woes ultimately led to his scholarship at Texas A&M being rescinded and he eventually made his way to Syracuse University. All charges were later dropped, but Robinson was left with a tarnished reputation.

He now joins a fairly lengthy list of Seahawks players who have been given another shot despite questionable histories. Seattle selected Robinson in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft at No. 148 overall to aid with the pass rush.

Robinson was forthright when asked about the criminal allegations by the Seattle media during his post-draft Zoom conference.

“Basically, I was immature at the time,” Robinson explained. “Me and my girlfriend at the time, we were in a relationship that was very immature. The situation, I’m sure you can find it, it was very embarrassing. I embarrassed myself, and my high school, my family and everything like that. I definitely learned from it.

“I’m looking forward to being a Seahawk, and I can’t wait to get up to Seattle.”

Robinson has a clean slate in the Emerald City and everything in the world to prove to Pete Carroll, John Schneider and everyone else who has been willing to give him a second chance.

Seahawks add another pass rushing option in Alton Robinson

The Seattle Seahawks need more help getting to the quarterback, and Syracuse’s Alton Robinson could be another option at LEO.

The biggest area of need heading into the 2020 NFL draft for the Seattle Seahawks, without a doubt, was the pass rush.

After adding Darrell Taylor from Tennessee in the second round, the Seahawks have made another addition to the pass rush, using their fifth round pick to select Syracuse defensive end Alton Robinson.

Robinson recorded 14.5 sacks in his final two seasons with the Orange, and he possesses the necessary burst, bend, and speed to be an immediate factor as a pass rusher.

His size (six-foot-three, 264 pounds) suggests he could be an option at the team’s LEO position, which is where they anticipate Taylor competing as well.

Robinson is still very raw, however, and he needs to work on his technique and footwork while developing a variety of counter moves if he wants to become an every down defensive end.

Robinson may not come in and produce sacks in the NFL in his first year, but as a developmental piece (like Rasheem Green) it’s not hard to imagine Robinson becoming a big part of this team’s defense in the future.

7 mid-round edge defenders who should be on Bills draft radar

Mid-round edge defender prospects for the Buffalo Bills to watch at the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Bills are set along the edge for the 2020 season, if things project out well. Jerry Hughes and the recently signed Mario Addison should be leading the way with Trent Murphy looking at a chance to contribute as well.

However, that starting duo is not young. They’ll contribute in 2020 and perhaps 2021, but they’re both already 30-plus years old while Murphy is entering the final year of his contract. The Bills don’t have many needs, but bringing in a younger option along their defensive front with that trio is of importance.

With that in mind, that doesn’t mean Buffalo has to reach for one at the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. There’s a chance the Bills could land their pass-rushing prospect at defensive end in the middle of the selection process.

Here are seven mid-round edge defender prospects that should be on the Bills draft radar this week:

Jonathan Greenard | Florida

Jonathan Greenard is certainly on the Bills draft radar since he reportedly met with the team at the recent scouting combine. Pegged anywhere from Day 2 to an early Day 3 pick, Greenard could impact an NFL roster next season. Greenard was a first-team, All-SEC selection last year, notching a team-high 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks in 12 starts. He also had an interception and three forced fumbles, so he has a knack for some game-changing plays. Greenard is also described as a “worker bee” in terms of effort.

A red flag on Greenard is certainly a wrist injury he suffered in 2018. Last season he played with it wrapped and padded all season. Analysis of his game expresses some concerns on getting outside the tackle as well, whether it’s to set the edge against the run or beating tackles on the outside while rushing the passer.

Seahawks Wire mock 4.0: Predicting Seattle’s picks in NFL draft

A look at how the Seattle Seahawks could attack the 2020 NFL draft, including taking a quarterback early and three defensive ends.

The NFL draft is just a few short days away, and the Seattle Seahawks are currently holding onto seven picks they will use to make the roster better in 2020.

The Seahawks Wire is releasing their fourth and final mock draft of the season. Using Pro Football Focus’ mock draft simulator, we made a trade back (as per tradition) and selected eight total players we believe the Seahawks could or should target in the draft this year.

Stay tuned for an unexpected selection in the second round, and a wrap up at the end, which includes the rationale for not taking a receiver, despite the stellar crop of talent at that position in this class.

Cardinals have had recent contact with Syracuse pass rusher Alton Robinson

The Syracuse pass rusher is drawing interest from the Cardinals.

The NFL draft is just days away and the Arizona Cardinals are getting some final communication with player prospects. They have interest in one of the defensive stars of the Senior Bowl.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, Arizona has recently held a virtual meeting with Syracuse edge defender Alton Robinson.

Robinson had a pair of sacks in the Senior Bowl. In 2019, he had only four sacks and nine tackles for loss but in 2018 had 10 and 17.

He has the size and burst to be an impact pass rusher in the NFL, but doesn’t have a variety of moves.

He is either a late Day 2 or Day 3 pick and would give the Cardinals some youth as a rotational pass rusher and some upside.
