UGA offers No. 1 tight end recruit Davon Mitchell

The Georgia Bulldogs are one of the latest schools to offer five-star tight end Davon Mitchell

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the latest schools to offer Davon Mitchell, who is the No. 1 tight end recruit in the class of 2025. Georgia has done an excellent job recruiting the tight end position recently and is showing no signs of slowing.

Georgia’s success at the tight end position has cost the Bulldogs some talent at wide receiver, but it is tough to make everyone happy.

Mitchell is the 26th-ranked recruit in the sophomore class. Mitchell is the No. 4 recruit in Texas. He plays high school football for Allen High School in Allen, Texas. Allen High School is one of the top high school football programs in Texas.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound tight end has scholarship offers from TCU, Oregon, Houston, South Carolina, Notre Dame and other top college football programs.

Mitchell displays good body control and does an excellent job of gaining yards after the catch.

The five-star tight end announced his scholarship offer from Georgia football via Twitter:

Allen (Texas) High School teacher and assistant football coach James Shillam died of COVID-19 complications on Sunday.

Shillam was hired to join Allen’s coaching staff as a freshman defensive assistant in July, according to the Allen Independent School District. He was 56 years old.

“He adored every minute of Texas football,” Shillam’s wife, Kyp told WFAA. “For him, Allen was his dream. It was his promised land.”

Before being hired at Allen by first-year head coach Chad Morris, Shillam coached at Newman Smith High School. Allen is scheduled to begin its 2021 season against Plano East High School on Friday night.

“He was everything you want in a coach,” former Newman-Smith coach Paul Ressa said. “He lived and breathed with faith and he walked with it. And he poured into kids”

Shillam was unvaccinated by choice and first became sick in early August, according to his wife. Texas has seen its COVID-19 death rate spike in recent weeks, with a seven-day death average of 154 now plaguing the Lone Star State after that number was at 23 just last month.

Allen High School football player, 16, shot and killed in Texas house

A 16-year-old Texas high school football player was shot and killed at a party.

Note: This story has been updated with information about the arrest of a suspect and information about the party.

A 16-year-old Texas high school football was shot at a party on Saturday night and died in the hospital, according to DallasNews.

Marquel Ellis Jr., a 16-year-old sophomore on the Allen (Texas) High School varsity and junior varsity football teams, was shot around 10 p.m.

Ellis’ mother, Jocelyn Maduagwu, told FOX 4 the boy had attended the party with his older sister. He was playing video games and listening to music, Maduagwu said.

Several people had been kicked out of the party. They later returned and fired into the house, police told NBCDFW.

Maduagwu said the people who were kicked out and fired the gun had been uninvited.

A 17-year-old was arrested Monday on one count of murder, according to Dallas News.

Police told NBCDFW the house is a property available for rental through an online marketplace, though the outlet did not specify which one.

Neighbors told NBCDFW there are often parties at the house.

A teenage neighbor heard nine or 10 shots go off, he told the outlet.

Ellis, who was initially declared dead by police at the home, was transported to the hospital where he later died, according to Dallas News.

He played wide receiver for Allen.

“His teammates loved him,” head coach Terry Gambill told Dallas News. “He loved his teammates, really just a good athlete, good person.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Ellis’ family pay for funeral expenses. As of Monday at 6 p.m. CT, it had raised about $14,000.

The football and basketball teams at Allen tweeted after Ellis’ death.
