Two Arkansas players earn All-SEC football honors

Landon Jackson and – get this – an offensive lineman, Josh Braun, were named All-SEC second-team.

Arkansas guard Josh Braun and defensive end Landon Jackson were each named All-SEC by the league’s media on Monday.

Braun was in his first season at Arkansas after transferring from Florida where he was a part-time starter. He fit into the starting lineup quickly with the Razorbacks, who needed plenty of offensive line help.

The group gave up a school-record 47 sacks and the team ran for its fewest yards per game since 2012. Less was on Braun than anyone else, though, as his pass protection grade checked out at 79.0, per Pro Football Focus.

Jackson was a legitimate disruptive force on Arkansas’ front. He had 6 1/2 sacks and 13 1/2 tackles for-loss, both ranking inside the Top 10 in the SEC. The TFL mark was actually tied for third among all Southeastern Conference players.

Both were tabbed to the All-SEC second-team and both could return to Arkansas in 2024. Braun seems more likely, as Jackson is expected to be an NFL pick were he to enter the draft. However, reports indicated last week that Jackson was leaning toward returning to Fayetteville.

LSU’s Angel Reese named SEC Preseason Player of the Year, four Tigers earn All-SEC honors

The Tigers fill the preseason SEC accolades list.

The SEC coaches have announced the full list of individual preseason accolades, and star forward [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] has been named the Preseason SEC Player of the Year.

Reese was a unanimous First Team All-American last season, and she enters this season with high expectations. In addition to Preseason Player of the Year accolades, she was also named to the preseason First Team All-SEC.

She’s joined by transfer [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag], who was brought in to replace point guard [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag]. Van Lith was an All-ACC selection at Louisville last season.

Two more Tigers also appear on the Second Team All-SEC list in [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag]. Johnson had a breakout campaign as a freshman last season, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. Morrow, meanwhile, was a standout at DePaul before transferring to LSU this offseason.

Florida wing named to 2023-24 preseason All-SEC Team

Florida sophomore wing Riley Kugel was named a preseason All-SEC second teamer on Tuesday. He’ll lead the Gators in 2023-24.

Perhaps the most talented returning player on Florida’s roster heading into the 2023-24 men’s college basketball season is wing [autotag]Riley Kugel[/autotag].

He flirted with the draft following a strong finish to his freshman year but ultimately decided to return to Gainesville to lead the Gators and boost his draft stock.

So far, so good for Kugel, who was named to the preseason All-SEC second team in the conference preseason media poll Tuesday. The Gators were also picked to finish eighth in the conference. Auburn and Mississippi occupy the Nos. 6 and 7 spots.

Kugel nearly averaged double figures as a freshman, ending the season with a 9.9 per game average. His 12.6 points per game in SEC play was the best figure put up by a Gators freshman since Bradley Beal in 2011-12. Kugel also finished the season on an eight-game streak of double-digit points.

With several of last year’s leaders no longer with the team, Kugel has a chance to step up and have a big year with the Gators. If he struggles, so might the rest of the team.

Arkansas basketball: Trevon Brazile, Devo Davis named to Preseason All-SEC Team

Ahead of SEC Media Days and the college basketball season, Arkansas was well represented in the conference’s preseason honors.

College basketball season is right around the corner as teams are gearing up for the long five-month trek towards March Madness. On Wednesday and Thursday, the SEC will hold their annual “Basketball Media Days” in Birmingham.

Ahead of the annual event, the conference released their preseason All-SEC first and second teams, which included two Arkansas Razorbacks. [autotag]Trevon Brazile[/autotag] received first team All-SEC honors and [autotag]Devo Davis[/autotag] received second team All-SEC honors. The players were chosen by a select panel of regional and national media members.

Brazile earned a first team selection despite only playing in nine games before suffering a season-ending ACL tear. In those nine games, Brazile 11.8 points on 48.1% from the field and 37.9% from three, 6.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals in 27.1 minutes per night.

Davis earns second team honors for the second time in his career (2021-22). Last season, the junior guard averaged 10.9 points on 41.5% from the field and 34.6% from three , 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals on his way to an SEC All-Defensive Team selection.

As a team, the Razorbacks were picked to finish third in the conference this year by the media. [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag]’s Hogs were behind Tennessee (No. 1) and Texas A&M (No. 2).

Arkansas will be in action this Friday night when in Bud Walton Arena for an exhibition game against UT-Tyler. There will be no TV or stream for the game, so the only way to watch is to be in attendance.

College Sports Wire names Gators edge rusher for All-SEC team

The junior from Manor, Texas has collected two sacks this season along with the second most tackles-for-loss for Florida with four.

We’ve arrived to the mid-point of the 2023 college football season and it’s clear which players are standing out on the gridiron and destined to be all-time players.

The Florida Gators have plenty of talented athletes on its defensive front and coordinator Austin Armstrong has been utilizing his big weapons of front to hold every opponent (besides Kentucky) to less than 25 points.

College Sports Wire staff writer Ryan Haley listed his choice for the 2023 All-SEC selections. He wrote that the best defensemen are difficult to choose, but he’s giving his votes with confidence.

“Another position easily fooled by the box score, the best defensive linemen don’t always rack up counting stats,” Haley wrote. “Georgia’s Jordan Davis was one of the more dominant defensive tackles in recent years despite only tallying 32 tackles and two sacks his last year in Athens. There’s no perfect way to measure the best, and the SEC always has the best linemen on both sides of the ball, but here are some of its standouts.”

Representing the Florida Gators is edge rusher [autotag]Princely Umanmielen[/autotag], who has been getting to the backfield with ease and leads the Gator defense in sacks. The junior from Manor, Texas has collected two sacks this season along with the second most tackles-for-loss for Florida with four.

Umanmielen has racked up 14 total tackles while on the field.

Also on the edge for Haley’s All-SEC list is James Pearce Jr., who’s had just about the same success as Umanmielen, collecting 10 total tackles and getting to the quarterback for five sacks.

Umanmielen and the Florida Gators will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the Gamecocks in a mid-afternoon matchup at 3:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

11 LSU players named to Preseason Coaches All-SEC teams

LSU is third behind Alabama and Georgia, which have 14 selections each.

The coaches have released their preseason All-SEC Teams, and while Georgia and Alabama unsurprisingly lead the way with 14 total selections each, LSU is not far behind with 11 total selections.

On the First Team, there are three starters on each side of the ball. Quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] appears, as does his favorite receiver in [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag]. Sophomore offensive tackle [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] also appears after a breakout freshman campaign.

Defensively, [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] is a no-brainer, while LSU’s defensive tackle tandem of [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] both make appearances.

On the second team, LSU put three players including sophomore tight end [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag], last year’s other freshman standout on the offensive line. [autotag]Nathan Dibert[/autotag], who handled kickoffs for the Tigers, made the second team as a specialist.

Two more Tigers players appear on the Third Team in veteran nickel/safety [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag], a transfer addition from Arkansas last offseason, and long-snapper [autotag]Slade Roy[/autotag], who also came as a transfer from East Carolina last season.

Five Tigers named to preseason All-SEC third team

Georgia and Alabama led the way with 14 selections, followed by LSU.

Five Auburn Tigers were selected to the preseason All-SEC third team on Tuesday.

Running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag], offensive guard [autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag], cornerback [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag], and punter [autotag]Oscar Chapman[/autotag] received the honor after being selected by SEC coaches. No players on Auburn’s roster cracked the first or second team.

[autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] may be the name most familiar to Auburn fans. The junior tailback is coming off a strong season in 2022, totaling 899 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns. He should be a focal point of [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s offense in 2023, and it wouldn’t be a very big surprise to see him jump up to the second, or even first team by season’s end.

Senior tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag] has yet to see significant playing time during his Auburn career but brings leadership and experience to an Auburn locker room filled with new faces. Deal also has an opportunity to break out with [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], who threw for 546 passing yards and four touchdowns to tight ends in 2022.

Guard [autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag] has been locked in a positional competition all camp long. The sixth-year lineman was shaky in 2022 but will hope to have a starting role throughout the season on a revamped offensive line.

The lone Auburn defensive player to be selected by SEC coaches to the preseason All-Conference team, cornerback [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] has been a key member of Auburn’s secondary for the past three seasons, totaling 89 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 25 PD, and two interceptions in that span.

Aussie punter [autotag]Oscar Chapman[/autotag] rounds out the Auburn selectees. The senior punter’s boot has been electric at times during his tenure on the plains. Chapman averaged 43.9 yards per punt last year, sending 12 of them over 50 yards.

Auburn’s five selections to the All-Conference team were among the lowest in the SEC. Georgia and Alabama led the way with 14 selections a piece, with LSU closely trailing behind with 11 players selected.

11 LSU Tigers on preseason All-SEC teams

If the preseason All-SEC teams are any indication of how good LSU will be in 2023, the Tigers are looking stout.

If the preseason All-SEC teams are any indication of how good LSU will be in 2023, the Tigers are looking stout.

LSU landed six players ([autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag], [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag], [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag], [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag]) on the First Team, three players ([autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag], [autotag]Nathan Dibert[/autotag], [autotag]Slade Roy[/autotag]) on the Second Team and two players ([autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag]) on the Third Team.

LSU is coming off of a 10-4 season in 2022 in which the Tigers were champions of the SEC West and winners of the Citrus Bowl over Purdue.

The expectations are high for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] in his second season after [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] won national titles in their second seasons.

Four Razorbacks named preseason All-SEC by the media

A quartet of Razorbacks were named preseason all-SEC by the media on Friday, with Rocket Sanders taking home first-team all-SEC recognition.

KJ Jefferson, Raheim Sanders, Brady Latham and Dwight McGlothern were named All-SEC by the media on Friday the day after Media Days concluded in Nashville.

Sanders was named the first-team all-SEC running back, the first time an Arkansas back has garnered that honor since Knile Davis in 2012.

Jefferson was the second-team quarterback, as LSU’s Jayden Daniels took home first-team honors. It was the first time since Tyler Wilson in 2012 that a Razorback quarterback took home preseason recognition.

Latham was given second team offensive line honors along with Alabama’s Tyler Booker, Missouri’s Javon Foster, Georgia’s Xavier Truss and Alabama center Seth McGaughlin.

At defensive back, McGlothern joined Alabama’s Malachi Moore, Texas A&M’s Demani Richardson and Missouri’s Kris Abrams-Draine as second-team selections.

Auburn volleyball’s Akasha Anderson named to Preseason All-SEC Team

Auburn is looking up to follow its historic 2022 season.

Pin hitter [autotag]Akasha Anderson[/autotag] was named to the Preseason All-SEC Team and Auburn was picked to finish seventh in the SEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll the conference announced Wednesday.

Auburn received 89 points in the preseason poll after going 22-9 last season and making the program’s second NCAA Tournament berth in head coach [autotag]Brent Crouch[/autotag]’s third season on the Plains.

Anderson was a major reason for Auburn’s terrific season, becoming the 2022 AVCA South Region Freshman of the Year and making the All-Region Team after leading Auburn with 428 kills and 3.54 kills per set.

Both were the second-best marks in program history and ranked top-five in the SEC in 2022. The Reston, Virginia native finished with nine double-doubles on the year, eclipsing 20 kills in eight separate matches.
