There isn’t much history of NFL teams trading down from the 14th pick

There isn’t much history of NFL teams trading down from the 14th overall pick, but this is a good year for the Saints to try it:

If there’s ever been a year for Mickey Loomis to break his streak of NFL drafts without a trade down (dating back to 2007!), it’s this one: the New Orleans Saints are getting perilously older at multiple positions and they’re short on draft picks. Restocking the roster is going to be tough with just two picks in the top four rounds.

At the same time, the 2024 draft class is remarkably top-heavy. A historically small class of underclassmen declaring has winnowed the talent available in the later rounds, where the Saints expect to have most of their selections once compensatory draft picks are announced in a week or two. Some crafty maneuvering — moving down early on, packaging those later picks to move up in the middle rounds — could pay off in a big way.

But beyond Loomis continuing to snub trade offers and move down, there isn’t much historical precedent for trading out of the 14th pick. We went back and studied every draft class since 2004 to get an idea of what the Saints could ask for in a trade down in 2024:

Jets offseason primer: Team enters most important offseason in long time

With Super Bowl LVIII in the books and the Kansas City Chiefs cementing their dynasty by hitting the jackpot in Las Vegas, the road to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans has officially begun and the Jets are ready to push all their chips to the middle of the table in hopes of heading to the Caesars’ Superdome on February 9, 2025.

With quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning from his Achilles injury, the Jets are ready to be aggressive again this offseason, get back into contention and end a 13-year postseason drought. Here’s some of what the Jets are working with entering the offseason, including upcoming free agents and salary cap.

Taking a look back at the Jets’ 2021 NFL draft class

The Jets released RB Michael Carter on Tuesday and we recap how the team’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

The New York Jets are amid a two-game skid right now, being outscored by the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders 43-18 in the last two weeks. The Jets held a players-only meeting on Tuesday, and running back Michael Carter was released shortly after.

We are now in the third year of Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas being the head coach-general manager duo for the Jets. The 2021 NFL draft was the first one Saleh and Douglas took part in together, beginning a regime that had fans in New York optimistic about the future.

With the offense struggling with Zach Wilson under center, and Carter being released, now is as good a time as ever to recap how New York’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 8 Q&A with Jets Wire

With a Week 8 matchup between the New York Giants and New York Jets on tap, we go behind enemy lines for a chat with Jets Wire.

The New York Giants (2-5) and New York Jets (3-3) will square off on Sunday afternoon in a Week 8 matchup at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Giants opened the week as 3-point home underdogs and that spread hasn’t changed as of this writing.

With this matchup on tap, Giants Wire took the opportunity to hold a Q&A with Jets Wire managing editor Billy Riccette.

Jets’ Alijah Vera-Tucker to miss matchup vs. Eagles after suffering torn Achilles

Jets’ Alijah Vera-Tucker to miss matchup vs. #Eagles after suffering a season ending torn Achilles in win over the Broncos

Eagles’ rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter has destroyed the competition through the first five weeks of the season, and Sunday’s matchup against the Jets offers another productive scenario.

According to Ian Rapoport, star offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker will miss the remainder of the New York Jets season with a torn Achilles suffered in the win over Denver.

Initially labeled a calf injury upon his exit, Vera-Tucker will join teammate Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve with matching injuries.

The Mile High City is a place the talented offensive guard would like to avoid, as Vera-Tucker suffered a torn biceps in the same stadium one year ago.

The Jets’ best offensive lineman, Vera-Tucker, moved from right guard to right tackle in Week 3 to help stabilize the line.

That optimism that built up on the status of Alijah Vera-Tucker just flew out the window. An MRI revealed that Vera-Tucker did in fact suffer a torn Achilles during Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

It was originally thought early Monday that he had avoided major surgery and only suffered a calf injury. It looks like the concern shown by Robert Saleh was indeed warranted.

For the second straight season, Vera-Tucker suffers a season-ending injury in Denver. Last year, in Week 7, Vera-Tucker suffered a triceps injury. Now he becomes the second Jet, following Aaron Rodgers, to have a season-ending Achilles injury.

Max Mitchell will roll now as the starting right tackle and the Jets can eventually activate rookie Carter Warren. Billy Turner is the other backup tackle and Duane Brown is also still on injured reserve and can return to practice after Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Adding a veteran is also on the table.

The Jets moved Vera-Tucker two weeks ago in a line shuffle after placing Brown on IR, moving Mekhi Becton to left tackle and inserting Joe Tippmann into the starting lineup at right guard. Very unfortunate news for AVT and the Jets.

Alijah Vera-Tucker to miss time, optimism it is not Achilles injury

Alijah Vera-Tucker to miss time, optimism it is not Achilles injury

Jets offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker is expected to miss time with an injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Broncos, but there is optimism that it is just a calf injury and not an Achilles injury.

A sigh of relief for sure for the Jets. Head coach Robert Saleh said after the game Sunday there was concern on the injury, which led some to start fearing the worst. This news seems to point that Vera-Tucker avoided major injury.

His absence would likely mean Max Mitchell stays at right tackle in his place as he did during the game Sunday. The Jets will also soon be getting rookie Carter Warren on the 53-man roster whenever they decide to activate him from injured reserve.

Robert Saleh says there’s ‘a concern’ on Alijah Vera-Tucker’s calf injury

For the second year in a row, Jets offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered an injury of some sort in Denver. Last year, it was his season-ending tricep injury. This year, it’s a calf injury.

Vera-Tucker left the game before halftime and was later ruled out for the remainder of the game. Max Mitchell played the rest of the game at right tackle.

After the game, head coach Robert Saleh said he is concerned about the injury. He was asked if it was an Achilles injury. Saleh said they need to wait for an MRI.

A second-straight season-ending injury in Denver would be a gut punch after the Jets scored a 31-21 win over the Broncos to end a three-game losing streak. The Jets were just starting to find some consistency up front after moving Mekhi Becton to left tackle, Vera-Tucker to right tackle and inserting Joe Tippmann into the starting lineup at right guard.

The Jets currently have two tackles on injured reserve that can return at some point. Duane Brown is eligible to return to practice following next week’s game against the Eagles. Rookie Carter Warren had his 21-day practice window opened this week but has not yet been activated to the roster.

Billy Turner is also among the backups and had to play a few snaps at left tackle while Becton was out.

We should find out more on Vera-Tucker Monday. Until then, we wait and see.
