Potential Texas football signee now five-star prospect

Defensive end Alfred Collins will be choosing between Texas, Oklahoma, or Alabama on National Signing Day.

Although the early signing period in December of each year has become the norm for top athletes to officially commit to their program of choice, Texas head coach Tom Herman and his staff will be paying close attention to National Signing Day on February 5.

The Longhorns have been in consistent pursuit of the No. 32 overall prospect in the nation, defensive end Alfred Collins. According to 247Sports Composite final 2020 class rankings, Collins has earned his fifth star after an impressive showing at the All-American Bowl earlier this month.

The Bastrop Cedar Creek lineman is the No. 5-ranked prospect in the state of Texas. The Longhorns are fortunate to be one of three programs left in the hunt to land Collins, as it’s one of their primary positions of need.

If Collins does indeed choose Texas, he would be the first five-star defensive line prospect to sign in the Big 12 since Malcom Brown in 2012.

2020 Four Star Defensive End Announces Top Three

2020 4* DE Alfred Collins will be making his college decision on Feb 5 at 3:50 p.m. CST. Collins will decide between Alabama, OU, and Texas.

2020 four-star defensive end Alfred Collins out of Bastrop, TX has announced he will be making his college decision on Feb 5 at 3:50 p.m. CST. Narrowing it down to three schools, Collins said he will decide between Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Taking place at Cedar Creek High School, Collins’ commitment would be a big one for the Longhorns. Currently without any defensive ends in the 2020 class, he would add to a Texas defensive line that is expected to improve throughout the next couple of years.

Having a monster senior season, Collins recorded 86 tackles in 2019. 35 of them were for a loss and he added on eight sacks. Not only did he get to the quarterback, but he created turnovers, forcing four fumbles.

According to 247Sports’ Crystal ball, he is 100% Texas. He would join fellow defensive lineman Vernon Boughton and Sawyer Goram-Welch in the 2020 class, but those two are listed as defensive tackles.

2020 Recruiting: Alfred Collins

Texas Longhorns target, Alfred Collins will be in action this weekend in the All-American Bowl.

The recruiting class so far has yielded on of the top classes in the nation but Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns still have work to do. One target still in the cross hairs is Alfred Collins of Bastrop, Texas.

The four star defensive end would be a huge get for Texas. As was evident in the Alamo Bowl, when the pass rush gets going the Longhorns can play with anyone in the country. The Utes were ranked in the top 12 for a reason and the Longhorns defense was able to play some suffocating defense. It was something that gave fans some hope for the future.

The defense has been missing that pass rusher like Charles Omenihu, Alex Okafor or even Brian Orakpo. Enter Alfred Collins. The pass rusher will be on display in the All-American Bowl this weekend and could give Longhorns faithful a glimpse of their future. Collins is a long athlete that is still filling out his frame but has the ability to help a pass rush that was lacking in 2019.

He has a relentless motor that will be key for him in the Big 12, with out offense perform in this conference Collins will need to get downfield to help with swarming to the ball. He has some technique with his hand placement that will only improve with college coaching. He uses his long arms and frame to his advantage, it will be difficult for quarterbacks to throw over the 6’5″ edge defender.

Collins can rush from anywhere on the defensive front and does so with some quickness and power. He isn’t the premiere sack master that some will covet but as your strong-side defensive end, Collins is good at setting the edge and stopping the run. During his three years in high school he tallied 25 tackles, 74 of them were tackles for loss and 18 sacks.

Should Herman get Collins to sign with Texas then the Longhorns defense will definitely be heading in the right direction.
