Amir Albazi steps in to face Malcolm Gordon at UFC’s July 18 event in Abu Dhabi

One of Europe’s best flyweight prospects has gotten the call to the UFC and will step in to face Malcolm Gordon on July 18.

[autotag]Aleksander Doskalchuk[/autotag] has been forced out of the UFC’s July 18 event due to undisclosed reasons and [autotag]Amir Albazi[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will step in and face [autotag]Malcolm Gordon[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

A person with knowledge of the booking confirmed the news to MMA Junkie on Friday after Albazi posted about the fight on his Instagram page. The UFC subsequently made the new booking official.

London Shootfighters’ Albazi has competed all across Europe and the Middle East. After notching back-to-back wins over Jamie Powell and Iuri Bejenari in Bellator, Albazi suffered his first career loss to ex-UFC flyweight Jose Torres at BRAVE CF 23 in April 2019. He then rebounded with a first-round submission win over Ryan Curtis this past November at BRAVE CF 29.

Gordon, TKO’s flyweight champion, has won four in a row and is coming off a first-round submission of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 24 alum Yoni Sherbatov in April 2019.

UFC announces full ‘Fight Island’ lineup, includes 47 bouts in 15 days

UFC president Dana White today announced the complete lineup for the four cards that will take place next month in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The unique setup has been necessitated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it difficult to get international fighters into the U.S. to compete.

“I think this is going to be a really unique experience, not just for the fighters, but for us,” UFC president Dana White said during the announcement. “It’s going to be cool. It’s going to be something different. It’s never been done before, and however long this thing goes on, and however long it’s hard to get people in from other countries, we will have these fights at ‘Fight Island’ – Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.”

First up, it’s UFC 251 on July 11, which features a trio of title fights.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the booking Wednesday but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Ulanbekov, a training partner of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, has won three in a row, including back-to-back finishes. The former Gorilla Fighting Championship and Fight Nights Global flyweight champion has only one blemish in his career to fellow recently signed 125-pounder Zhalgas Zhumagulov.

Former M1 Global flyweight champ Doskalchuk has won seven in a row. The Ukrainian hasn’t competed since November 2018, when he notched his second title defense in a unanimous decision win over Mikael Silander.
